Saul Spares King Agag
15 Samuel also said to Saul, (A)“The Lord sent me to anoint you king over His people, over Israel. Now therefore, heed the voice of the words of the Lord. 2 Thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘I will punish Amalek for what he did to Israel, (B)how he ambushed him on the way when he came up from Egypt. 3 Now go and (C)attack[a] Amalek, and (D)utterly destroy all that they have, and do not spare them. But kill both man and woman, infant and nursing child, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’ ”
4 So Saul gathered the people together and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand foot soldiers and ten thousand men of Judah. 5 And Saul came to a city of Amalek, and lay in wait in the valley.
6 Then Saul said to (E)the Kenites, (F)“Go, depart, get down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them. For (G)you showed kindness to all the children of Israel when they came up out of Egypt.” So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites. 7 (H)And Saul attacked the Amalekites, from (I)Havilah all the way to (J)Shur, which is east of Egypt. 8 (K)He also took Agag king of the Amalekites alive, and (L)utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword. 9 But Saul and the people (M)spared Agag and the best of the sheep, the oxen, the fatlings, the lambs, and all that was good, and were unwilling to utterly destroy them. But everything despised and worthless, that they utterly destroyed.
Saul Rejected as King
10 Now the word of the Lord came to Samuel, saying, 11 (N)“I greatly regret that I have set up Saul as king, for he has (O)turned back from following Me, (P)and has not performed My commandments.” And it (Q)grieved Samuel, and he cried out to the Lord all night. 12 So when Samuel rose early in the morning to meet Saul, it was told Samuel, saying, “Saul went to (R)Carmel, and indeed, he set up a monument for himself; and he has gone on around, passed by, and gone down to Gilgal.” 13 Then Samuel went to Saul, and Saul said to him, (S)“Blessed are you of the Lord! I have performed the commandment of the Lord.”
14 But Samuel said, “What then is this bleating of the sheep in my ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?”
15 And Saul said, “They have brought them from the Amalekites; (T)for the people spared the best of the sheep and the oxen, to sacrifice to the Lord your God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.”
16 Then Samuel said to Saul, “Be quiet! And I will tell you what the Lord said to me last night.”
And he said to him, “Speak on.”
17 So Samuel said, (U)“When you were little in your own eyes, were you not head of the tribes of Israel? And did not the Lord anoint you king over Israel? 18 Now the Lord sent you on a mission, and said, ‘Go, and utterly destroy the sinners, the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are [b]consumed.’ 19 Why then did you not obey the voice of the Lord? Why did you swoop down on the [c]spoil, and do evil in the sight of the Lord?”
20 And Saul said to Samuel, (V)“But I have obeyed the voice of the Lord, and gone on the mission on which the Lord sent me, and brought back Agag king of Amalek; I have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. 21 (W)But the people took of the plunder, sheep and oxen, the best of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice to the Lord your God in Gilgal.”
22 So Samuel said:
(X)“Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices,
As in obeying the voice of the Lord?
Behold, (Y)to obey is better than sacrifice,
And to heed than the fat of rams.
23 For rebellion is as the sin of [d]witchcraft,
And stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.
Because you have rejected the word of the Lord,
(Z)He also has rejected you from being king.”
24 (AA)Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned, for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord and your words, because I (AB)feared the people and obeyed their voice. 25 Now therefore, please pardon my sin, and return with me, that I may worship the Lord.”
26 But Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you, (AC)for you have rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord has rejected you from being king over Israel.”
27 And as Samuel turned around to go away, (AD)Saul seized the edge of his robe, and it tore. 28 So Samuel said to him, (AE)“The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today, and has given it to a neighbor of yours, who is better than you. 29 And also the Strength of Israel (AF)will not lie nor relent. For He is not a man, that He should relent.”
30 Then he said, “I have sinned; yet (AG)honor me now, please, before the elders of my people and before Israel, and return with me, that I may worship the Lord your God.” 31 So Samuel turned back after Saul, and Saul worshiped the Lord.
32 Then Samuel said, “Bring Agag king of the Amalekites here to me.” So Agag came to him cautiously.
And Agag said, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.”
33 But Samuel said, (AH)“As your sword has made women childless, so shall your mother be childless among women.” And Samuel hacked Agag in pieces before the Lord in Gilgal.
34 Then Samuel went to (AI)Ramah, and Saul went up to his house at (AJ)Gibeah of Saul. 35 And (AK)Samuel went no more to see Saul until the day of his death. Nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul, and the Lord regretted that He had made Saul king over Israel.

15 撒母耳对扫罗说：“耶和华差遣我膏立你作他子民以色列的王，所以现在你要听耶和华的话。 2 万军之耶和华这样说：‘以色列人从埃及上来的时候，亚玛力人对他们所行的，在路上攻击他们的事，我必要惩罚。 3 现在你要去攻打亚玛力人，彻底毁灭他们所有的一切，不可怜惜他们。无论男女、孩童，或吃奶的婴儿，牛羊、骆驼、驴子，都要杀死。’”

4 于是扫罗招聚众人，在提拉因数点他们，共有步兵二十万，另有犹大人一万。 5 扫罗到了亚玛力人的城市，就在山谷中设下伏兵。 6 扫罗又对基尼人说：“你们走吧！离开亚玛力人下去吧！免得我把你们与他们一同消灭。因为以色列众人从埃及上来的时候，你们曾经以慈爱待他们。”于是基尼人离开亚玛力人去了。 7 扫罗击杀亚玛力人，从哈腓拉直到埃及东的书珥， 8 生擒了亚玛力人的王亚甲，用刀杀灭了所有人民。 9 但扫罗和众人怜惜亚甲，也爱惜上好的牛羊、肥牛犊、羊羔和一切美好的东西。他们不愿彻底毁灭这些；凡是卑贱的、没有价值的，他们就彻底毁灭。
扫罗受责
10 耶和华的话临到撒母耳说： 11 “我后悔立了扫罗为王，因为他已经离去不跟随我，也不执行我的命令了。”撒母耳非常忿怒，整夜哀求耶和华。 12 撒母耳清早起来，要在早晨去见扫罗；有人告诉撒母耳：“扫罗到了迦密，在那里为自己立了一座纪念碑，然后转身下到吉甲去了。” 13 撒母耳到了扫罗那里，扫罗对他说：“愿耶和华赐福给你！我已经执行了耶和华的命令。” 14 撒母耳说：“我耳中听见有羊叫牛鸣的声音，到底是甚么呢？” 15 扫罗回答：“这是众民从亚玛力人那里带来的，因为他们爱惜这些上好的牛羊，要献给耶和华你的 神为祭；其余的，我们都已经彻底毁灭了。” 16 撒母耳对扫罗说：“住口吧！让我把耶和华昨天晚上对我所说的话告诉你。”扫罗对他说：“请说。”
17 撒母耳说：“从前你虽然自以为微小，不是作了以色列众支派的首领吗？耶和华膏立了你作以色列的王， 18 差遣你去，说：‘你去彻底毁灭那些犯罪的亚玛力人，攻打他们，直到把他们全部毁灭。’ 19 你为甚么没有听从耶和华的话，急于夺取战利品，作了耶和华看为恶的事呢？”
20 扫罗回答撒母耳：“我实在听从了耶和华的话，行了耶和华差遣我行的路；我把亚玛力人的王亚甲带了回来，又把亚玛力人都彻底毁灭了。 21 可是众民却从那些战利品中，取了应当毁灭之物中上好的牛羊，要在吉甲献给耶和华你的 神为祭。” 22 撒母耳说：
“耶和华喜悦燔祭和平安祭，
岂像喜悦人听从耶和华的话呢？
听从胜过献祭，
听命胜过公羊的脂油。
23 因为悖逆与行邪术的罪相同，
顽梗与拜虚无偶像一样，
因为你弃绝了耶和华的话，
耶和华也弃绝了你作王。”
扫罗认罪
24 于是扫罗对撒母耳说：“我犯了罪了，我违背了耶和华的命令和你的话，因为我害怕众人，听从了他们的话。 25 现在求你赦免我的罪，与我一同回去，我好敬拜耶和华。” 26 撒母耳回答扫罗：“我不与你一同回去，因为你弃绝了耶和华的话，耶和华也弃绝你作以色列的王。” 27 撒母耳转身要走，扫罗拉着他外袍的衣边，衣边就撕裂了。 28 撒母耳就对他说：“今天耶和华把以色列国从你身上撕裂，赐给比你更好的人。 29 以色列的大能者必不说谎，也不后悔。因为他不是世人，他决不后悔。” 30 扫罗说：“我犯了罪了，但是求你在我人民的长老面前和以色列人面前给我面子，与我一同回去，我好敬拜耶和华你的 神。” 31 于是撒母耳跟着扫罗回去，扫罗就敬拜耶和华。
撒母耳杀掉亚玛力王
32 随后撒母耳说：“把亚玛力人的王亚甲带到我这里来！”亚甲欢欢喜喜走到他面前，心里说：“死亡的痛苦必定过去了！” 33 撒母耳说：“你的刀怎样使妇人丧子，你的母亲在妇人中也要怎样丧子。”于是撒母耳在吉甲，在耶和华面前把亚甲斩成碎块。
34 后来撒母耳回拉玛去，扫罗也上他所住的基比亚自己的家去了。 35 撒母耳直到死的日子，再没有看见扫罗。撒母耳为扫罗悲伤，因为耶和华后悔立了扫罗作以色列的王。

15 Samuel dit à Saül: C'est moi que l'Éternel a envoyé pour t'oindre roi sur son peuple, sur Israël: écoute donc ce que dit l'Éternel.
2 Ainsi parle l'Éternel des armées: Je me souviens de ce qu'Amalek fit à Israël, lorsqu'il lui ferma le chemin à sa sortie d'Égypte.
3 Va maintenant, frappe Amalek, et dévouez par interdit tout ce qui lui appartient; tu ne l'épargneras point, et tu feras mourir hommes et femmes, enfants et nourrissons, boeufs et brebis, chameaux et ânes.
4 Saül convoqua le peuple, et en fit la revue à Thelaïm: il y avait deux cent mille hommes de pied, et dix mille hommes de Juda.
5 Saül marcha jusqu'à la ville d'Amalek, et mit une embuscade dans la vallée.
6 Il dit aux Kéniens: Allez, retirez-vous, sortez du milieu d'Amalek, afin que je ne vous fasse pas périr avec lui; car vous avez eu de la bonté pour tous les enfants d'Israël, lorsqu'ils montèrent d'Égypte. Et les Kéniens se retirèrent du milieu d'Amalek.
7 Saül battit Amalek depuis Havila jusqu'à Schur, qui est en face de l'Égypte.
8 Il prit vivant Agag, roi d'Amalek, et il dévoua par interdit tout le peuple en le passant au fil de l'épée.
9 Mais Saül et le peuple épargnèrent Agag, et les meilleures brebis, les meilleurs boeufs, les meilleures bêtes de la seconde portée, les agneaux gras, et tout ce qu'il y avait de bon; ils ne voulurent pas le dévouer par interdit, et ils dévouèrent seulement tout ce qui était méprisable et chétif.
10 L'Éternel adressa la parole à Samuel, et lui dit:
11 Je me repens d'avoir établi Saül pour roi, car il se détourne de moi et il n'observe point mes paroles. Samuel fut irrité, et il cria à l'Éternel toute la nuit.
12 Il se leva de bon matin, pour aller au-devant de Saül. Et on vint lui dire: Saül est allé à Carmel, et voici, il s'est érigé un monument; puis il s'en est retourné, et, passant plus loin, il est descendu à Guilgal.
13 Samuel se rendit auprès de Saül, et Saül lui dit: Sois béni de l'Éternel! J'ai observé la parole de l'Éternel.
14 Samuel dit: Qu'est-ce donc que ce bêlement de brebis qui parvient à mes oreilles, et ce mugissement de boeufs que j'entends?
15 Saül répondit: Ils les ont amenés de chez les Amalécites, parce que le peuple a épargné les meilleures brebis et les meilleurs boeufs, afin de les sacrifier à l'Éternel, ton Dieu; et le reste, nous l'avons dévoué par interdit.
16 Samuel dit à Saül: Arrête, et je te déclarerai ce que l'Éternel m'a dit cette nuit. Et Saül lui dit: Parle!
17 Samuel dit: Lorsque tu étais petit à tes yeux, n'es-tu pas devenu le chef des tribus d'Israël, et l'Éternel ne t'a-t-il pas oint pour que tu sois roi sur Israël?
18 L'Éternel t'avait fait partir, en disant: Va, et dévoue par interdit ces pécheurs, les Amalécites; tu leur feras la guerre jusqu'à ce que tu les aies exterminés.
19 Pourquoi n'as-tu pas écouté la voix de l'Éternel? pourquoi t'es-tu jeté sur le butin, et as-tu fait ce qui est mal aux yeux de l'Éternel?
20 Saül répondit à Samuel: J'ai bien écouté la voix de l'Éternel, et j'ai suivi le chemin par lequel m'envoyait l'Éternel. J'ai amené Agag, roi d'Amalek, et j'ai dévoué par interdit les Amalécites;
21 mais le peuple a pris sur le butin des brebis et des boeufs, comme prémices de ce qui devait être dévoué, afin de les sacrifier à l'Éternel, ton Dieu, à Guilgal.
22 Samuel dit: L'Éternel trouve-t-il du plaisir dans les holocaustes et les sacrifices, comme dans l'obéissance à la voix de l'Éternel? Voici, l'obéissance vaut mieux que les sacrifices, et l'observation de sa parole vaut mieux que la graisse des béliers.
23 Car la désobéissance est aussi coupable que la divination, et la résistance ne l'est pas moins que l'idolâtrie et les théraphim. Puisque tu as rejeté la parole de l'Éternel, il te rejette aussi comme roi.
24 Alors Saül dit à Samuel: J'ai péché, car j'ai transgressé l'ordre de l'Éternel, et je n'ai pas obéi à tes paroles; je craignais le peuple, et j'ai écouté sa voix.
25 Maintenant, je te prie, pardonne mon péché, reviens avec moi, et je me prosternerai devant l'Éternel.
26 Samuel dit à Saül: Je ne retournerai point avec toi; car tu as rejeté la parole de l'Éternel, et l'Éternel te rejette, afin que tu ne sois plus roi sur Israël.
27 Et comme Samuel se tournait pour s'en aller, Saül le saisit par le pan de son manteau, qui se déchira.
28 Samuel lui dit: L'Éternel déchire aujourd'hui de dessus toi la royauté d'Israël, et il la donne à un autre, qui est meilleur que toi.
29 Celui qui est la force d'Israël ne ment point et ne se repent point, car il n'est pas un homme pour se repentir.
30 Saül dit encore: J'ai péché! Maintenant, je te prie, honore-moi en présence des anciens de mon peuple et en présence d'Israël; reviens avec moi, et je me prosternerai devant l'Éternel, ton Dieu.
31 Samuel retourna et suivit Saül, et Saül se prosterna devant l'Éternel.
32 Puis Samuel dit: Amenez-moi Agag, roi d'Amalek. Et Agag s'avança vers lui d'un air joyeux; il disait: Certainement, l'amertume de la mort est passée.
33 Samuel dit: De même que ton épée a privé des femmes de leurs enfants, ainsi ta mère entre les femmes sera privée d'un fils. Et Samuel mit Agag en pièces devant l'Éternel, à Guilgal.
34 Samuel partit pour Rama, et Saül monta dans sa maison à Guibea de Saül.
35 Samuel n'alla plus voir Saül jusqu'au jour de sa mort; car Samuel pleurait sur Saül, parce que l'Éternel se repentait d'avoir établi Saül roi d'Israël.
