14 Y aconteció que un día Jonatán, hijo de Saúl, dijo al joven que llevaba su armadura: «Ven y pasemos a la guarnición de los filisteos que está al otro lado». Pero no se lo hizo saber a su padre. 2 Saúl estaba situado en las afueras de Guibeá(A), debajo del granado que está en Migrón(B), y la gente que estaba con él eran unos 600 hombres(C); 3 y Ahías, hijo de Ahitob(D), hermano de Icabod(E), hijo de Finees, hijo de Elí, el sacerdote del Señor en Silo(F), llevaba un efod(G). El pueblo no sabía que Jonatán se había ido. 4 Y entre los desfiladeros por donde Jonatán intentaba cruzar a la guarnición de los filisteos(H), había un peñasco puntiagudo por un lado, y un peñasco puntiagudo por el otro lado; el nombre de uno era Boses y el nombre del otro Sene. 5 Uno de los peñascos se levantaba al norte, frente a Micmas, y el otro al sur, frente a Geba.

6 Jonatán dijo al joven que llevaba su armadura: «Ven y pasemos a la guarnición de estos incircuncisos(I); quizá el Señor obrará por nosotros, pues el Señor no está limitado a salvar con muchos o con pocos(J)». 7 Y su escudero le respondió: «Haga todo lo que tenga en su corazón; vea[a], aquí estoy con usted a su disposición[b]». 8 Entonces dijo Jonatán: «Mira, vamos a pasar hacia esos hombres y nos mostraremos a ellos(K). 9 Si nos dicen[c]: “Esperen hasta que lleguemos a ustedes”, entonces nos quedaremos en nuestro lugar y no subiremos a ellos. 10 Pero si dicen: “Suban a nosotros”, entonces subiremos, porque el Señor los ha entregado en nuestras manos; esta será la señal para nosotros(L)».

11 Cuando ambos se mostraron a la guarnición de los filisteos, estos[d] dijeron: «Miren, los hebreos salen de las cavernas donde se habían escondido(M)». 12 Los hombres de la guarnición saludaron[e] a Jonatán y a su escudero y dijeron: «Suban a nosotros y les diremos algo(N)». Y Jonatán dijo a su escudero: «Sube tras mí, pues el Señor los ha entregado en manos de Israel(O)». 13 Entonces Jonatán trepó con manos y pies, y tras él su escudero; y los filisteos caían delante de Jonatán, y tras él su escudero los remataba.

14 La primera matanza que hicieron Jonatán y su escudero fue de unos veinte hombres en el espacio de media yugada (aprox. 15 metros cuadrados) de tierra. 15 Hubo estremecimiento en el campamento, en el campo y entre todo el pueblo. Aun la guarnición y los de la avanzada se estremecieron(P), y la tierra tembló(Q); fue un gran temblor[f](R).

16 Los centinelas de Saúl que estaban en Guibeá de Benjamín vieron que la multitud se dispersaba[g] e iban en todas direcciones. 17 Y Saúl dijo al pueblo que estaba con él: «Pasen lista[h] ahora y vean quién ha salido de entre nosotros». Cuando ellos pasaron lista[i], notaron que Jonatán y su escudero no estaban. 18 Entonces Saúl dijo a Ahías: «Trae el arca de Dios(S)». Porque en ese tiempo el arca de Dios estaba con[j] los israelitas.

19 Y sucedió que mientras Saúl hablaba con el sacerdote, el alboroto en el campamento de los filisteos continuaba y aumentaba(T). Entonces Saúl dijo al sacerdote: «Retira tu mano». 20 Y Saúl y todo el pueblo que estaba con él se agruparon y fueron a la batalla, y vieron que la espada de cada filisteo se volvía contra su compañero(U), y había gran confusión.

21 Entonces los hebreos que de antes estaban con los filisteos y que habían subido con ellos de los alrededores al campamento, aun ellos también se unieron con los israelitas que estaban con Saúl y Jonatán(V). 22 Cuando todos los hombres de Israel que se habían escondido en la región montañosa de Efraín(W) oyeron que los filisteos habían huido, ellos también los persiguieron muy de cerca en la batalla. 23 Así libró el Señor a Israel en aquel día(X). La batalla se extendió más allá de[k] Bet Avén(Y).

24 Pero los hombres de Israel estaban en gran aprieto aquel día, porque Saúl había puesto al pueblo bajo juramento(Z), diciendo: «Maldito sea el hombre que tome alimento antes del[l] anochecer, antes que me haya vengado de mis enemigos». Y nadie del pueblo probó alimento. 25 Y todo el pueblo de la tierra entró en el bosque, y había miel en el suelo. 26 Y al entrar el pueblo en el bosque, vieron que la miel destilaba(AA), pero nadie se llevó la mano a la boca, porque el pueblo temía el juramento. 27 Pero Jonatán no había oído cuando su padre puso al pueblo bajo juramento; por lo cual extendió la punta de la vara que llevaba en su mano, la metió en un panal de miel y se llevó la mano a la boca(AB), y brillaron sus ojos(AC).

28 Entonces uno del pueblo le dijo[m]: «Tu padre puso bajo estricto juramento al pueblo y dijo: “Maldito sea el hombre que tome alimento hoy”». Y el pueblo estaba desfallecido. 29 Entonces Jonatán dijo: «Mi padre ha traído dificultades a esta[n] tierra(AD). Vean ahora cómo brillan mis ojos porque probé un poco de esta miel. 30 Cómo sería, si el pueblo hubiera comido hoy libremente del despojo que encontraron de sus enemigos. Pues hasta ahora la matanza entre los filisteos no ha sido grande».

31 Aquel día, después de herir a los filisteos desde Micmas(AE) hasta Ajalón(AF), el pueblo estaba muy cansado. 32 Entonces el pueblo se lanzó sobre el[o] despojo(AG), y tomó ovejas, bueyes y becerros y los mataron en el suelo; y el pueblo los comió con la sangre(AH). 33 Y avisaron a Saúl: «Ven, porque el pueblo está pecando contra el Señor, comiendo carne con la sangre(AI)». Y él dijo: «Han obrado pérfidamente. Tráiganme[p] una piedra grande inmediatamente».

34 Y Saúl añadió: «Dispérsense entre el pueblo, y díganles: “Tráigame cada uno de ustedes su buey o su oveja; mátenlos aquí y coman, pero no pequen contra el Señor comiendo carne con sangre”». Y aquella noche todo el pueblo trajo cada cual su buey consigo[q], y los mataron allí. 35 Y edificó Saúl un altar al Señor(AJ); este fue el primer altar que él edificó al Señor.

36 Entonces Saúl dijo: «Descendamos contra[r] los filisteos de noche, tomemos despojo de entre ellos hasta el amanecer, y no dejemos ni uno de ellos». Y ellos dijeron: «Haz lo que te parezca bien[s]». Entonces el sacerdote dijo: «Acerquémonos a Dios aquí(AK)». 37 Y consultó Saúl a Dios(AL): «¿Descenderé contra[t] los filisteos? ¿Los entregarás en manos de Israel?». Pero Él no le contestó en aquel día(AM).

38 Y Saúl dijo: «Acérquense aquí todos ustedes, jefes[u] del pueblo, y averigüen y vean cómo este pecado ha acontecido hoy(AN). 39 Porque vive el Señor que libra a Israel, que aunque la culpa esté en mi hijo Jonatán, ciertamente morirá(AO)». Pero nadie, en todo el pueblo, le respondió.

40 Entonces dijo a todo Israel: «Ustedes estarán a un lado, y yo y mi hijo Jonatán estaremos al otro lado». Y el pueblo dijo a Saúl: «Haz lo que bien te parezca[v]». 41 Saúl entonces dijo al Señor, Dios de Israel: «Da suerte perfecta». Y fueron señalados[w](AP) Jonatán y Saúl, pero el pueblo quedó libre[x]. 42 Y Saúl dijo: «Echen suertes entre mí y Jonatán mi hijo». Y Jonatán fue señalado[y].

43 Dijo, pues, Saúl a Jonatán: «Cuéntame lo que has hecho(AQ)». Y Jonatán le respondió: «En verdad probé un poco de miel con la punta de la vara que tenía en la mano(AR). Aquí estoy, debo morir». 44 Y dijo Saúl: «Que Dios me haga esto[z](AS), y aun más, pues ciertamente morirás, Jonatán(AT)». 45 Pero el pueblo dijo a Saúl: «¿Debe morir Jonatán, el que ha obtenido[aa] esta gran liberación en Israel? No sea así. Vive el Señor que ni un cabello de su cabeza caerá a tierra(AU), porque él ha obrado con Dios en este día». Así el pueblo rescató[ab] a Jonatán, y no murió(AV). 46 Luego Saúl subió, dejando de perseguir a[ac] los filisteos, y los filisteos se fueron a su tierra[ad].

47 Cuando Saúl asumió el reinado sobre Israel, luchó contra todos sus enemigos en derredor: contra Moab, contra los amonitas(AW), contra Edom, contra los reyes de Soba(AX) y contra los filisteos(AY); adondequiera que se volvía, resultaba vencedor[ae]. 48 Obró con valentía derrotando[af] a los amalecitas(AZ), y libró a Israel de manos de los que lo saqueaban.

49 Los hijos de Saúl fueron Jonatán, Isúi[ag] y Malquisúa(BA). Y estos eran los nombres de sus dos hijas: el nombre de la mayor, Merab(BB), y el nombre de la menor, Mical(BC). 50 El nombre de la mujer de Saúl era Ahinoam, hija de Ahimaas. Y el nombre del jefe de su ejército era Abner, hijo de Ner(BD), tío de Saúl. 51 Cis, padre de Saúl, y Ner, padre de Abner, eran hijos[ah] de Abiel(BE).

52 La guerra contra los filisteos fue encarnizada todos los días de Saúl. Cuando Saúl veía algún hombre fuerte o valiente, lo unía a su servicio[ai](BF).

Kubanga tewali kiyinza kuziyiza Mukama kulokola, ng’akozesa abangi oba abatono.

7 Omuvubuka n’amuddamu nti, “Kola nga bw’osiima. Genda mu maaso, nzisa kimu naawe, omutima gwange n’omwoyo gwange biri wamu naawe.” 8 Yonasaani n’alyoka ayogera nti, “Kale, tusomoke tugende eri abasajja, tubeerage. 9 Bwe banaatugamba nti, ‘Mutulindirire okutuusa lwe tunajja,’ kale tunaasigala we tuli, ne tutagenda gye bali. 10 (E)Naye bwe banaatugamba nti, ‘Mujje gye tuli,’ tunaayambuka, kubanga ako ke kanaaba akabonero gye tuli nti Mukama abagabudde mu mukono gwaffe.”

11 (F)Awo bombi ne beeraga eri olusiisira lw’Abafirisuuti. Awo Yonasaani n’agamba omuvubuka eyasitulanga ebyokulwanyisa bye nti, “Ngoberera twambuke kubanga Mukama abawaddeyo mu mukono gwa Isirayiri.”

13 Yonasaani n’alinnyalinnya, ng’ayavula nga n’omuvubuka eyasitulanga ebyokulwanyisa bye bw’amuvaako emabega. Yonasaani n’atta Abafirisuuti, n’omuvubuka eyasitulanga ebyokulwanyisa bye ng’amuvaako emabega naye n’atta abo abaali bawonyeewo. 14 Mu lulumba olwo olwasooka, Yonasaani n’omuvubuka eyasitulanga ebyokulwanyisa bye, batta abasajja amakumi abiri mu kibangirizi ekyenkana ekitundu kya eka.

Yonasaani Alya Omubisi gw’Enjuki

24 (P)Ku lunaku olwo abasajja Abayisirayiri baali bajjudde ennaku nnyingi nnyo kubanga Sawulo yali abalayizza ng’agamba nti, “Akolimirwe oyo yenna anaalya akantu konna ng’obudde tebunnawungeera, nga sinnaba kwesasuza ku balabe bange.” Awo ne wataba n’omu ku baserikale akomba ku kantu.

25 Awo abantu bonna bwe baatuuka mu kibira ne balaba omubisi gw’enjuki ku ttaka. 26 Bwe beeyongerayo munda mu kibira ne basanga nga gutonnya, naye ne wataba n’omu agukombako kubanga baali batya ekirayiro kye baakola. 27 (Q)Naye Yonasaani yali tawulidde nga kitaawe alayiza abantu, kyeyava addira omuggo gwe yalina n’annyika omusa gwagwo mu bisenge by’enjuki, n’agukombako, amaaso ge ne ganyirira n’addamu amaanyi. 28 Awo omu ku baserikale n’amugamba nti, “Kitaawo yatukuutidde n’atulayiza nti, ‘Omuntu yenna anaalya ku mmere leero akolimirwe.’ Era ekyo kye kireetedde abaserikale okuggwaamu amaanyi.” 29 (R)Yonasaani n’ayogera nti, “Kitange aleetedde ensi yaffe emitawaana. Laba amaaso gange bwe ganyirira n’amaanyi gange bwe gakomyewo bwe nkombyeko ku mubisi guno ogw’enjuki. 30 Tekyandisinze nnyo leero singa abasajja baalidde ku munyago gw’abalabe baabwe? Era tebandisse Abafirisuuti abasinga awo obungi?”

31 (S)Abayisirayiri we baamalira okutta Abafirisuuti okuva e Mikumasi okutuuka e Ayalooni nga bakooye nnyo. 32 (T)Ne badda ku munyago, ne baddira endiga n’ente n’ennyana ne bazisalira wansi ku ttaka ne balya ennyama n’omusaayi gwayo. 33 Awo omuntu omu n’ategeeza Sawulo nti, “Abantu basobya ku Mukama kubanga balya ennyama erimu omusaayi.”

N’ayogera nti, “Musobezza nnyo. Munjiringisirize wano ejjinja eddene kaakano.” 34 Sawulo n’agamba nti, “Muyiteeyite mu bantu mubategeeze nti, ‘Buli omu ku mmwe aleete ente ye n’endiga ye muzittire wano era mu zirye. Temuddangayo okusobya ku Mukama nga mulya ennyama erimu omusaayi.’ ” Awo buli omu ku bo n’aleeta ente ye ekiro ekyo n’agisalira awo. 35 (U)Sawulo n’azimbira Mukama ekyoto, era ekyo kye kyoto kye yasooka okuzimbira Mukama.

36 Awo Sawulo n’ayogera nti, “Tuserengete tugoberere Abafirisuuti ekiro kino tubanyage okutuusa emmambya lw’eneesala, era tuleme okulekawo wadde omu ku bo nga mulamu.” Ne bamuddamu nti, “Kola nga bw’osiima.”

38 (W)Sawulo kyeyava ayogera nti, “Mujje wano mmwe mwenna abakulembeze b’abantu, tunoonyereze tulabe ekibi ekikoleddwa leero. 39 (X)Nga Mukama alokola Isirayiri bw’ali omulamu, ne bwe kinaaba ku mutabani wange Yonasaani, ateekwa kufa.” Naye ne wataba n’omu amwanukula.

40 Awo Sawulo n’agamba Abayisirayiri bonna nti, “Muyimirire ku ludda olwo, nze ne mutabani wange Yonasaani tunaayimirira ku ludda luno.” Abantu ne bamuddamu nti, “Kola nga bw’onoosiima.”

41 Sawulo n’asaba Mukama Katonda wa Isirayiri nti, “Kiki ekikugaanye okuddamu omuweereza wo leero? Omusango bwe guba nga guli ku nze oba ku mutabani wange Yonasaani ddamu ne Wumimu, naye bwe guba nga guli ku bantu bo Isirayiri, onaddamu ne Sumimu.” Awo akalulu ne kakubibwa era ne kagwa ku Sawulo ne Yonasaani mutabani we. 42 Awo Sawulo n’ayogera nti, “Mutukubire akalulu nze ne mutabani wange Yonasaani.” Yonasaani n’alondebwa.

43 (Y)Sawulo n’abuuza Yonasaani nti, “Mbulira ky’okoze.” Yonasaani n’amutegeeza nti, “Nakombyeko katono ku mubisi gw’enjuki nga nkozesa omusa gw’omuggo gwange. Kaakano ekyo kinsanyiza okufa?” 44 (Z)Sawulo n’amuddamu nti, “Katonda ankole bw’atyo n’okukirawo bw’otoofe, Yonasaani!” 45 (AA)Naye abantu ne bagamba Sawulo nti, “Lwaki, Yonasaani akoze eby’amagero ebyo byonna mu Isirayiri afa? Ddala Yonasaani attibwe? Oyo aleetedde Isirayiri obununuzi obw’ekitalo? Nedda tekisoboka! Nga Mukama bw’ali omulamu, tewali luviiri na lumu lunaava ku mutwe gwe ne lugwa wansi, kubanga ebyo by’akoze leero Katonda y’amuyambye okubikola.” Abantu ne banunula Yonasaani bwe batyo, n’atattibwa. 46 Ne Sawulo n’alekeraawo okugoberera Abafirisuuti, nabo ne beddirayo mu nsi yaabwe.

Jonathan Defeats the Philistines

14 One day Jonathan the son of Saul said to the young man who carried his armor, “Come, let us go over to the Philistine garrison on the other side.” But he did not tell his father. 2 Saul was staying in the outskirts of Gibeah in the pomegranate cave[a] at (A)Migron. The people who were with him were about (B)six hundred men, 3 including (C)Ahijah the son of Ahitub, (D)Ichabod's brother, son of Phinehas, son of Eli, the priest of the Lord (E)in Shiloh, (F)wearing an ephod. And the people did not know that Jonathan had gone. 4 Within (G)the passes, by which Jonathan sought to go over to the Philistine garrison, there was a rocky crag on the one side and a rocky crag on the other side. The name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh. 5 The one crag rose on the north in front of Michmash, and the other on the south in front of (H)Geba.

6 Jonathan said to the young man who carried his armor, “Come, let us go over to the garrison of these (I)uncircumcised. It may be that the Lord will work for us, (J)for nothing can hinder the Lord from saving by many or by few.” 7 And his armor-bearer said to him, “Do all that is in your heart. Do as you wish.[b] Behold, I am with you heart and soul.” 8 Then Jonathan said, “Behold, we will cross over to the men, and we will show ourselves to them. 9 If they say to us, ‘Wait until we come to you,’ then we will stand still in our place, and we will not go up to them. 10 But if they say, ‘Come up to us,’ then we will go up, for the Lord has given them into our hand. And this shall be the sign to us.” 11 So both of them showed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines. And the Philistines said, “Look, Hebrews are coming (K)out of the holes where they have hidden themselves.” 12 And the men of the garrison hailed Jonathan and his armor-bearer and said, “Come up to us, and we will show you a thing.” And Jonathan said to his armor-bearer, “Come up after me, for the Lord has given them into the hand of Israel.” 13 Then Jonathan climbed up on his hands and feet, and his armor-bearer after him. And they fell before Jonathan, and his armor-bearer killed them after him. 14 And that first strike, which Jonathan and his armor-bearer made, killed about twenty men within as it were half a furrow's length in an acre[c] of land. 15 And there was a panic in the camp, in the field, and among all the people. The garrison and even (L)the raiders trembled, the earth quaked, and it became a very great panic.[d]

16 And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked, and behold, the multitude (M)was dispersing here and there.[e] 17 Then Saul said to the people who were with him, “Count and see who has gone from us.” And when they had counted, behold, Jonathan and his armor-bearer were not there. 18 So Saul said to Ahijah, “Bring the ark of God here.” For the ark of God went at that time with the people[f] of Israel. 19 Now (N)while Saul was talking to the priest, the tumult in the camp of the Philistines increased more and more. So Saul said to the priest, “Withdraw your hand.” 20 Then Saul and all the people who were with him rallied and went into the battle. And behold, (O)every Philistine's sword was against his fellow, and there was very great confusion. 21 Now the Hebrews who had been with the Philistines before that time and who had gone up with them into the camp, (P)even they also turned to be with the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan. 22 Likewise, when all the men of Israel (Q)who had hidden themselves (R)in the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines were fleeing, they too followed hard after them in the battle. 23 (S)So the Lord saved Israel that day. And the battle passed beyond (T)Beth-aven.

Saul's Rash Vow

24 And the men of Israel had been hard pressed that day, (U)so Saul had laid an oath on the people, saying, “Cursed be the man who eats food until it is evening and I am avenged on my enemies.” So none of the people had tasted food. 25 Now when all the people[g] came to the forest, behold, there was honey on the ground. 26 And when the people entered the forest, behold, the honey was dropping, but no one put his hand to his mouth, for the people feared the oath. 27 But Jonathan had not heard his father charge the people with the oath, (V)so he put out the tip of the staff that was in his hand and dipped it in the honeycomb and put his hand to his mouth, and his eyes became bright. 28 Then one of the people said, “Your father strictly charged the people with an oath, saying, ‘Cursed be the man who eats food this day.’” And the people were (W)faint. 29 Then Jonathan said, “My father has troubled the land. See how my eyes have become bright because I tasted a little of this honey. 30 How much better if the people had eaten freely today of the spoil of their enemies that they found. For now the defeat among the Philistines has not been great.”

31 They struck down the Philistines that day from (X)Michmash to (Y)Aijalon. And the people were very (Z)faint. 32 The people (AA)pounced on the spoil and took sheep and oxen and calves and slaughtered them on the ground. And the people ate them (AB)with the blood. 33 Then they told Saul, “Behold, the people are sinning against the Lord by eating (AC)with the blood.” And he said, “You have dealt treacherously; roll a great stone to me here.”[h] 34 And Saul said, “Disperse yourselves among the people and say to them, ‘Let every man bring his ox or his sheep and slaughter them here and eat, and do not sin against the Lord by eating with the blood.’” So every one of the people brought his ox with him that night and they slaughtered them there. 35 And Saul (AD)built an altar to the Lord; it was the first altar that he built to the Lord.

36 Then Saul said, “Let us go down after the Philistines by night and plunder them until the morning light; let us not leave a man of them.” And they said, “Do whatever seems good to you.” But (AE)the priest said, “Let us draw near to God here.” 37 And Saul inquired of God, “Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will you give them into the hand of Israel?” (AF)But he did not answer him that day. 38 And Saul said, “Come here, all you leaders of the people, and know and see how this sin has arisen today. 39 For (AG)as the Lord lives who saves Israel, (AH)though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die.” But there was not a man among all the people who answered him. 40 Then he said to all Israel, “You shall be on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side.” And the people said to Saul, “Do what seems good to you.” 41 Therefore Saul said, “O Lord God of Israel, why have you not answered your servant this day? If this guilt is in me or in Jonathan my son, O Lord, God of Israel, give Urim. But if this guilt is in your people Israel, give Thummim.”[i] (AI)And Jonathan and Saul were taken, but the people escaped. 42 Then Saul said, (AJ)“Cast the lot between me and my son Jonathan.” And Jonathan was taken.

43 Then Saul said to Jonathan, (AK)“Tell me what you have done.” And Jonathan told him, (AL)“I tasted a little honey with the tip of the staff that was in my hand. Here I am; I will die.” 44 And Saul said, (AM)“God do so to me and more also; (AN)you shall surely die, Jonathan.” 45 Then the people said to Saul, “Shall Jonathan die, who has worked this great salvation in Israel? Far from it! (AO)As the Lord lives, (AP)there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground, for he has worked with God this day.” So the people ransomed Jonathan, so that he did not die. 46 Then Saul went up from pursuing the Philistines, and the Philistines went to their own place.

Saul Fights Israel's Enemies

47 When Saul had taken the kingship over Israel, he fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, (AQ)against the Ammonites, against Edom, against the kings of (AR)Zobah, and against the Philistines. Wherever he turned he routed them. 48 And he did valiantly (AS)and struck the Amalekites and delivered Israel out of the hands of those who plundered them.

49 (AT)Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, Ishvi, and Malchi-shua. And the names of his two daughters were these: the name of the firstborn was (AU)Merab, and the name of the younger Michal. 50 And the name of Saul's wife was Ahinoam the daughter of Ahimaaz. (AV)And the name of the commander of his army was Abner the son of Ner, (AW)Saul's uncle. 51 (AX)Kish was the father of Saul, and Ner the father of Abner was the son of (AY)Abiel.

52 There was hard fighting against the Philistines all the days of Saul. And when Saul saw any strong man, or any valiant man, (AZ)he attached him to himself.
