13 Había ya reinado Saúl un año, y cuando llevaba reinando dos años sobre Israel, 2 escogió a tres mil hombres de Israel; estaban con Saúl dos mil en Micmas y en el monte Bet-el, y mil estaban con Jonatán en Gabaa de Benjamín, y envió al resto del pueblo cada uno a sus tiendas. 3 Jonatán atacó a la guarnición de los filisteos que había en el collado, y lo supieron los filisteos. Entonces Saúl hizo tocar trompeta por todo el país, diciendo: «¡Que oigan los hebreos!»
4 Cuando todo Israel supo que se decía: «Saúl ha atacado a la guarnición de los filisteos», y también que Israel se había hecho odioso a los filisteos, se reunió el pueblo tras Saúl en Gilgal. 5 Se concentraron entonces los filisteos para pelear contra Israel: treinta mil carros, seis mil hombres de a caballo, y pueblo numeroso como la arena que está a la orilla del mar. Luego subieron y acamparon en Micmas, al oriente de Bet-avén.
6 Cuando los hombres de Israel vieron que estaban en peligro (porque el pueblo estaba en grave aprieto), se escondieron en cuevas, en fosos, en peñascos, en rocas y en cisternas. 7 Algunos de los hebreos pasaron el Jordán hacia la tierra de Gad y de Galaad; pero Saúl permanecía aún en Gilgal, y todo el pueblo iba tras él temblando. 8 Esperó siete días, conforme al plazo que Samuel había fijado, pero Samuel no llegaba a Gilgal y el pueblo se desbandaba. 9 Entonces dijo Saúl:
—Traedme el holocausto y las ofrendas de paz.
Y ofreció el holocausto.
10 Cuando él acababa de ofrecer el holocausto, vio a Samuel que venía; y Saúl salió a su encuentro para saludarlo. 11 Samuel dijo:
—¿Qué has hecho?
Saúl respondió:
—Porque vi que el pueblo se desbandaba y que tú no venías dentro del plazo señalado, mientras los filisteos estaban ya concentrados en Micmas, 12 me dije: “Ahora descenderán los filisteos contra mí a Gilgal y yo no he implorado el favor de Jehová.” Así que me vi forzado a ofrecer el holocausto.
13 Entonces Samuel dijo a Saúl:
—Locamente has actuado; si hubieras guardado el mandamiento que Jehová, tu Dios, te había ordenado, Jehová habría confirmado tu reino sobre Israel para siempre. 14 Pero ahora tu reino no será duradero. Jehová se ha buscado un hombre conforme a su corazón, al cual ha designado para que sea príncipe sobre su pueblo, por cuanto tú no has guardado lo que Jehová te mandó.
15 Samuel se levantó y subió de Gilgal a Gabaa de Benjamín.
Saúl contó la gente que se hallaba con él, y eran como seiscientos hombres. 16 Saúl, su hijo Jonatán, y el pueblo que con ellos se hallaba, se quedaron en Gabaa de Benjamín, mientras los filisteos acampaban en Micmas. 17 Entonces salió una avanzada del campamento de los filisteos en tres escuadrones; un escuadrón marchaba por el camino de Ofra hacia la tierra de Sual, 18 otro escuadrón marchaba hacia Bet-horón, y el tercer escuadrón marchaba hacia la región que mira al valle de Zeboim, hacia el desierto.
19 En toda la tierra de Israel no se hallaba herrero, porque los filisteos habían dicho: «Para que los hebreos no hagan espada o lanza.» 20 Por lo cual todos los de Israel tenían que acudir a los filisteos para afilar cada uno la reja de su arado, su azadón, su hacha o su hoz. 21 El precio era un pim por las rejas de arado y por los azadones, y la tercera parte de un siclo por afilar las hachas y por componer las aguijadas. 22 Así aconteció que en el día de la batalla ninguno de los del pueblo que estaban con Saúl y Jonatán tenía en sus manos una espada o una lanza, excepto Saúl y Jonatán, su hijo, que sí las tenían. 23 Mientras tanto, un destacamento de los filisteos avanzó hasta el paso de Micmas.

13 Saúl era mayor de edad cuando comenzó a reinar en Israel; y cuando llevaba ya algunos años reinando, 2 escogió tres mil soldados entre los israelitas. Dos mil se quedaron con él en Micmás y en los montes de Betel, y los otros mil se quedaron con Jonatán en Guibeá de Benjamín. Al resto de la gente, Saúl le ordenó volver a casa. 3 Jonatán acabó con la guarnición filistea que estaba en Guibeá, y los filisteos lo supieron. Entonces Saúl mandó tocar la trompeta en todo el país, para poner sobre aviso a los hebreos.
4 Todos los israelitas supieron que Saúl había acabado con la guarnición filistea y que por eso los filisteos aborrecían a los israelitas, así que el ejército se reunió con Saúl en Guilgal. 5 Los filisteos, a su vez, se juntaron para luchar contra los israelitas. Tenían treinta mil carros de combate, seis mil soldados de caballería y una infantería tan numerosa como la arena del mar. Luego se dirigieron a Micmás y establecieron su campamento allí, al oriente de Bet-avén.
6 Los israelitas se vieron en grave aprieto, pues de tal manera fueron atacados por los filisteos que tuvieron que esconderse en cuevas y hoyos, y entre las peñas, y en zanjas y pozos. 7 Muchos de ellos cruzaron el Jordán, hacia la región de Gad y de Galaad; pero Saúl se quedó todavía en Guilgal, y todo su ejército lo seguía lleno de miedo. 8 Allí esperó Saúl siete días, según el plazo que le había indicado Samuel; pero Samuel no llegaba a Guilgal, y la gente comenzaba a irse. 9 Entonces Saúl ordenó:
—Tráiganme animales para los holocaustos y los sacrificios de reconciliación.
Y él mismo ofreció el holocausto.
10 En el momento en que Saúl terminaba de ofrecer el holocausto, llegó Samuel. Entonces Saúl salió para recibirlo y saludarlo, 11 pero Samuel le dijo:
—¿Por qué has hecho eso?
Saúl respondió:
—Cuando vi que la gente comenzaba a irse, y que tú no llegabas en la fecha indicada, y que los filisteos estaban reunidos en Micmás, 12 pensé que ellos bajarían a atacarme en Guilgal, sin que yo me hubiera encomendado al Señor; por eso me vi en la necesidad de ofrecer yo mismo el holocausto.
13 Samuel le contestó:
—¡Lo que has hecho es una locura! Si hubieras obedecido la orden que el Señor te dio, él habría confirmado para siempre tu reinado en Israel. 14 Pero ahora, tu reinado no permanecerá. El Señor buscará un hombre de su agrado y lo nombrará jefe de su pueblo, porque tú has desobedecido la orden que él te dio.
15 En seguida Samuel se fue de Guilgal para seguir su camino. El resto del ejército siguió a Saúl para entablar combate, y de Guilgal llegaron a Guibeá de Benjamín. Allí contó Saúl las tropas que le acompañaban, y eran unos seiscientos hombres. 16 Saúl y su hijo Jonatán, y las tropas que iban con ellos, se quedaron en Guibeá de Benjamín, mientras que los filisteos acamparon en Micmás, 17 aunque tres grupos de guerrilleros filisteos salieron de su campamento; uno de ellos se dirigió hacia Ofrá, en la región de Sual, 18 otro fue hacia Bet-horón, y el tercero hacia la colina que se eleva sobre el valle de Seboím, hacia el desierto.
19 En todo el territorio de Israel no había un solo herrero, porque los filisteos pensaban que de esa manera los hebreos no podrían fabricar espadas ni lanzas. 20 Todos los israelitas tenían que recurrir a los filisteos para afilar cada cual su reja de arado, su azadón, su hacha o su pico. 21 Se cobraban dos tercios de siclo por afilar rejas y azadones, y un tercio de siclo por afilar las hachas y arreglar las aguijadas. 22 Por lo tanto, ninguno de los que acompañaban a Saúl y Jonatán tenía espada o lanza el día de la batalla. Sólo ellos dos las tenían. 23 Mientras tanto, un destacamento filisteo avanzó hacia el paso de Micmás.

13 Saül était âgé de... ans, lorsqu'il devint roi, et il avait déjà régné deux ans sur Israël.
2 Saül choisit trois mille hommes d'Israël: deux mille étaient avec lui à Micmasch et sur la montagne de Béthel, et mille étaient avec Jonathan à Guibea de Benjamin. Il renvoya le reste du peuple, chacun à sa tente.
3 Jonathan battit le poste des Philistins qui étaient à Guéba, et les Philistins l'apprirent. Saül fit sonner de la trompette dans tout le pays, en disant: Que les Hébreux écoutent!
4 Tout Israël entendit que l'on disait: Saül a battu le poste des Philistins, et Israël se rend odieux aux Philistins. Et le peuple fut convoqué auprès de Saül à Guilgal.
5 Les Philistins s'assemblèrent pour combattre Israël. Ils avaient mille chars et six mille cavaliers, et ce peuple était innombrable comme le sable qui est sur le bord de la mer. Ils vinrent camper à Micmasch, à l'orient de Beth Aven.
6 Les hommes d'Israël se virent à l'extrémité, car ils étaient serrés de près, et ils se cachèrent dans les cavernes, dans les buissons, dans les rochers, dans les tours et dans les citernes.
7 Il y eut aussi des Hébreux qui passèrent le Jourdain, pour aller au pays de Gad et de Galaad. Saül était encore à Guilgal, et tout le peuple qui se trouvait auprès de lui tremblait.
8 Il attendit sept jours, selon le terme fixé par Samuel. Mais Samuel n'arrivait pas à Guilgal, et le peuple se dispersait loin de Saül.
9 Alors Saül dit: Amenez-moi l'holocauste et les sacrifices d'actions de grâces. Et il offrit l'holocauste.
10 Comme il achevait d'offrir l'holocauste, voici, Samuel arriva, et Saül sortit au-devant de lui pour le saluer.
11 Samuel dit: Qu'as-tu fait? Saül répondit: Lorsque j'ai vu que le peuple se dispersait loin de moi, que tu n'arrivais pas au terme fixé, et que les Philistins étaient assemblés à Micmasch,
12 je me suis dit: Les Philistins vont descendre contre moi à Guilgal, et je n'ai pas imploré l'Éternel! C'est alors que je me suis fait violence et que j'ai offert l'holocauste.
13 Samuel dit à Saül: Tu as agi en insensé, tu n'as pas observé le commandement que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, t'avait donné. L'Éternel aurait affermi pour toujours ton règne sur Israël;
14 et maintenant ton règne ne durera point. L'Éternel s'est choisi un homme selon son coeur, et l'Éternel l'a destiné à être le chef de son peuple, parce que tu n'as pas observé ce que l'Éternel t'avait commandé.
15 Puis Samuel se leva, et monta de Guilgal à Guibea de Benjamin. Saül fit la revue du peuple qui se trouvait avec lui: il y avait environ six cents hommes.
16 Saül, son fils Jonathan, et le peuple qui se trouvait avec eux, avaient pris position à Guéba de Benjamin, et les Philistins campaient à Micmasch.
17 Il sortit du camp des Philistins trois corps pour ravager: l'un prit le chemin d'Ophra, vers le pays de Schual;
18 l'autre prit le chemin de Beth Horon; et le troisième prit le chemin de la frontière qui regarde la vallée de Tseboïm, du côté du désert.
19 On ne trouvait point de forgeron dans tout le pays d'Israël; car les Philistins avaient dit: Empêchons les Hébreux de fabriquer des épées ou des lances.
20 Et chaque homme en Israël descendait chez les Philistins pour aiguiser son soc, son hoyau, sa hache et sa bêche,
21 quand le tranchant des bêches, des hoyaux, des tridents et des haches, était émoussé, et pour redresser les aiguillons.
22 Il arriva qu'au jour du combat il ne se trouvait ni épée ni lance entre les mains de tout le peuple qui était avec Saül et Jonathan; il ne s'en trouvait qu'auprès de Saül et de Jonathan, son fils.
23 Un poste de Philistins vint s'établir au passage de Micmasch.

Samuel Rebukes Saul
13 Saul was thirty[a] years old when he became king, and he reigned over Israel forty-[b] two years.
2 Saul chose three thousand men from Israel; two thousand(A) were with him at Mikmash(B) and in the hill country of Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan at Gibeah(C) in Benjamin. The rest of the men he sent back to their homes.
3 Jonathan attacked the Philistine outpost(D) at Geba,(E) and the Philistines heard about it. Then Saul had the trumpet(F) blown throughout the land and said, “Let the Hebrews hear!” 4 So all Israel heard the news: “Saul has attacked the Philistine outpost, and now Israel has become obnoxious(G) to the Philistines.” And the people were summoned to join Saul at Gilgal.
5 The Philistines assembled(H) to fight Israel, with three thousand[c] chariots, six thousand charioteers, and soldiers as numerous as the sand(I) on the seashore. They went up and camped at Mikmash,(J) east of Beth Aven.(K) 6 When the Israelites saw that their situation was critical and that their army was hard pressed, they hid(L) in caves and thickets, among the rocks, and in pits and cisterns.(M) 7 Some Hebrews even crossed the Jordan to the land of Gad(N) and Gilead.
Saul remained at Gilgal, and all the troops with him were quaking(O) with fear. 8 He waited seven(P) days, the time set by Samuel; but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and Saul’s men began to scatter. 9 So he said, “Bring me the burnt offering and the fellowship offerings.” And Saul offered(Q) up the burnt offering. 10 Just as he finished making the offering, Samuel(R) arrived, and Saul went out to greet(S) him.
11 “What have you done?” asked Samuel.
Saul replied, “When I saw that the men were scattering, and that you did not come at the set time, and that the Philistines were assembling at Mikmash,(T) 12 I thought, ‘Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal,(U) and I have not sought the Lord’s favor.(V)’ So I felt compelled to offer the burnt offering.”
13 “You have done a foolish thing,(W)” Samuel said. “You have not kept(X) the command the Lord your God gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time.(Y) 14 But now your kingdom(Z) will not endure; the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart(AA) and appointed(AB) him ruler(AC) of his people, because you have not kept(AD) the Lord’s command.”
15 Then Samuel left Gilgal[d] and went up to Gibeah(AE) in Benjamin, and Saul counted the men who were with him. They numbered about six hundred.(AF)
Israel Without Weapons
16 Saul and his son Jonathan and the men with them were staying in Gibeah[e](AG) in Benjamin, while the Philistines camped at Mikmash. 17 Raiding(AH) parties went out from the Philistine camp in three detachments. One turned toward Ophrah(AI) in the vicinity of Shual, 18 another toward Beth Horon,(AJ) and the third toward the borderland overlooking the Valley of Zeboyim(AK) facing the wilderness.
19 Not a blacksmith(AL) could be found in the whole land of Israel, because the Philistines had said, “Otherwise the Hebrews will make swords or spears!(AM)” 20 So all Israel went down to the Philistines to have their plow points, mattocks, axes and sickles[f] sharpened. 21 The price was two-thirds of a shekel[g] for sharpening plow points and mattocks, and a third of a shekel[h] for sharpening forks and axes and for repointing goads.
22 So on the day of the battle not a soldier with Saul and Jonathan(AN) had a sword or spear(AO) in his hand; only Saul and his son Jonathan had them.
Jonathan Attacks the Philistines
23 Now a detachment of Philistines had gone out to the pass(AP) at Mikmash.(AQ)

13 Saul reigned one year; and when he had reigned two years over Israel,
2 Saul chose him three thousand men of Israel; whereof two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in mount Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.
3 And Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear.
4 And all Israel heard say that Saul had smitten a garrison of the Philistines, and that Israel also was had in abomination with the Philistines. And the people were called together after Saul to Gilgal.
5 And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea shore in multitude: and they came up, and pitched in Michmash, eastward from Bethaven.
6 When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait, (for the people were distressed,) then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits.
7 And some of the Hebrews went over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.
8 And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.
9 And Saul said, Bring hither a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering.
10 And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.
11 And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash;
12 Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the Lord: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering.
13 And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the Lord thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the Lord have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.
14 But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the Lord hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the Lord hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the Lord commanded thee.
15 And Samuel arose, and gat him up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present with him, about six hundred men.
16 And Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people that were present with them, abode in Gibeah of Benjamin: but the Philistines encamped in Michmash.
17 And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned unto the way that leadeth to Ophrah, unto the land of Shual:
18 And another company turned the way to Bethhoron: and another company turned to the way of the border that looketh to the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.
19 Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel: for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears:
20 But all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his share, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock.
21 Yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to sharpen the goads.
22 So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found.
23 And the garrison of the Philistines went out to the passage of Michmash.
