10 Ông Sa-mu-ên cầm ve dầu đổ lên đầu Sau-lơ, rồi ông hôn anh và nói: “CHÚA đã xức dầu cho con để chỉ huy dân Ngài.[a] 2 Hôm nay, sau khi con từ giã ta ra đi, con sẽ gặp hai người đàn ông bên mộ Ra-chên tại Xên-xa, thuộc địa phận Bên-gia-min. Họ sẽ nói với con: ‘Mấy con lừa cái anh đi tìm đã kiếm được rồi. Bây giờ cha anh không còn lo lắng về mấy con lừa nữa, nhưng lại lo cho các anh.’ Ông cứ hỏi: ‘Làm sao tìm được con trai tôi?’
3 Từ đó, con tiếp tục đi, và khi đến cây sồi tại Tha-bô, con sẽ gặp ba người đàn ông trên đường đến Bê-tên thờ phượng Đức Chúa Trời, một người mang theo ba con dê con, người kia ba ổ bánh, và người nọ một bầu rượu. 4 Họ sẽ chào con và tặng con hai ổ bánh. Con hãy nhận bánh của họ.
5 Sau đó, con đi đến Ghi-bê-a Ê-lô-him[b] nơi có người Phi-li-tin đóng quân. Khi vào thành, con sẽ gặp một đoàn tiên tri đang đi xuống từ nơi thờ phượng trên đồi. Họ vừa hăng say nhảy múa vừa nói tiên tri. Đi trước họ, người thì gảy đàn hạc, đàn lia, kẻ thì lúc lắc trống nhỏ, hoặc thổi sáo. 6 Thần linh của CHÚA sẽ chiếm ngự con, con cũng sẽ hăng say nhảy múa và nói tiên tri cùng với họ; con sẽ trở thành một người khác. 7 Khi các điềm này xảy ra, con sẽ biết có Đức Chúa Trời ở với con. Hãy làm theo mọi điều Ngài chỉ dẫn.
8 Kế đến, con hãy đi trước ta xuống Ghinh-ganh. Ta cũng sẽ xuống đó với con để dâng tế lễ toàn thiêu và tế lễ ăn mừng. Con hãy ở đó bảy ngày chờ ta đến, ta sẽ chỉ dạy con điều con phải làm.”
9 Vừa khi Sau-lơ từ giã ông Sa-mu-ên, quay lưng đi, Đức Chúa Trời ban cho anh một tấm lòng mới. Mọi điềm ông Sa-mu-ên báo trước đều xảy ra nội trong ngày đó. 10 Sau-lơ và người đầy tớ vừa đến Ghi-bê-a thì gặp một đoàn tiên tri. Thần linh của Đức Chúa Trời chiếm ngự Sau-lơ, anh hăng say nhảy múa và nói tiên tri cùng với họ. 11 Mọi người đã từng biết Sau-lơ trước kia, thấy anh nói tiên tri chung với các tiên tri liền hỏi nhau: “Điều gì đã xảy đến cho con trai ông Kích? Sau-lơ cũng trở thành tiên tri nữa sao?”
12 Một người ở vùng đó hỏi thêm: “Còn mấy vị kia, cha họ là ai?” Từ đó có câu ngạn ngữ: “Sau-lơ cũng trở thành tiên tri nữa sao?” 13 Sau khi nói tiên tri xong, Sau-lơ lên chỗ thờ phượng trên đồi.
14 Chú của Sau-lơ hỏi Sau-lơ và người đầy tớ của anh ta: “Các con đi đâu?” Sau-lơ đáp: “Chúng con đi tìm mấy con lừa cái nhưng không tìm được, nên đến hỏi ông Sa-mu-ên.” 15 Người liền hỏi tiếp: “Kể cho chú biết ông Sa-mu-ên nói gì với các con?” 16 Sau-lơ đáp: “Ông nói lừa tìm được rồi.” Nhưng Sau-lơ không kể cho chú mình những gì ông Sa-mu-ên nói về việc vua chúa.
Sau-lơ Được CHÚA Chọn Làm Vua
17 Ông Sa-mu-ên triệu tập dân Y-sơ-ra-ên đến với CHÚA tại Mích-ba. 18 Ông bảo họ: “CHÚA là Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên phán như vầy: ‘Chính Ta đã đem các con, dân Y-sơ-ra-ên, ra khỏi Ai-cập. Ta đã giải cứu các con khỏi quyền lực của Ai-cập, và của mọi nước[c] áp bức các con.’ 19 Nhưng ngày nay, anh chị em gạt bỏ Đức Chúa Trời của anh chị em, dù chính Ngài đã giải cứu anh chị em khỏi mọi tai ương hoạn nạn, khi anh chị em nói với tôi: ‘xin cho chúng tôi một vua.’ Vậy bây giờ, anh chị em hãy trình diện CHÚA, đứng chầu theo từng bộ tộc và tộc.”
20 Ông Sa-mu-ên bảo tất cả các bộ tộc Y-sơ-ra-ên đến gần; ông rút thăm, và CHÚA chỉ định bộ tộc Bên-gia-min. 21 Ông bảo các tộc trong bộ tộc Bên-gia-min đến gần, và tộc Mát-ri được chỉ định. Kế đến,[d] Sau-lơ, con ông Kích, được chỉ định. Họ tìm Sau-lơ nhưng không gặp. 22 Họ lại cầu hỏi CHÚA: “Còn có người nào khác sẽ đến đây không?” CHÚA đáp: “Kìa, Sau-lơ trốn giữa đống đồ đạc.” 23 Họ chạy đến, đem Sau-lơ về trình diện dân chúng. Anh đứng cao hơn mọi người từ vai trở lên. 24 Ông Sa-mu-ên bảo toàn dân: “Anh chị em hãy nhìn xem! Đây là người CHÚA chọn. Trong toàn dân, không có ai khác bằng anh cả.” Toàn dân tung hô: “Vua vạn tuế!”
25 Đoạn ông Sa-mu-ên giải thích cho dân chúng biết các quyền hạn và trách nhiệm của vua; ông ghi chép lại trong một quyển sách, đem đặt trong Nơi Thánh, trước mặt CHÚA. Sau cùng, ông bảo mọi người ai nấy về nhà mình. 26 Sau-lơ cũng trở về nhà mình tại Ghi-bê-a. Những dũng sĩ được Đức Chúa Trời cảm động đi theo Sau-lơ. 27 Nhưng bọn côn đồ chê bai: “Anh chàng này làm gì mà cứu giúp chúng ta được?” Bọn chúng khinh dể Sau-lơ, không đem quà cáp gì cho người cả. Tuy nhiên, Sau-lơ vẫn điềm tĩnh yên lặng.

10 (A)Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head (B)and kissed him and said, “Has not the Lord anointed you to be prince[a] over (C)his people Israel? And you shall reign over the people of the Lord and you will save them from the hand of their surrounding enemies. And this shall be the sign to you that the Lord has anointed you to be prince[b] over his heritage. 2 When you depart from me today, you will meet two men by (D)Rachel's tomb in the territory of Benjamin at Zelzah, and they will say to you, (E)‘The donkeys that you went to seek are found, and now (F)your father has ceased to care about the donkeys and is anxious about you, saying, “What shall I do about my son?”’ 3 Then you shall go on from there farther and come to the (G)oak of Tabor. Three men (H)going up (I)to God at Bethel will meet you there, one carrying three young goats, another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a skin of wine. 4 And they will greet you and give you two loaves of bread, which you shall accept from their hand. 5 After that you shall come to (J)Gibeath-elohim,[c] (K)where there is a garrison of the Philistines. And there, as soon as you come to the city, you will meet a group of prophets coming down (L)from the high place with harp, tambourine, flute, and lyre before them, prophesying. 6 (M)Then the Spirit of the Lord will rush upon you, (N)and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man. 7 Now when (O)these signs meet you, do what your hand finds to do, (P)for God is with you. 8 Then go down before me (Q)to Gilgal. And behold, I am coming down to you to offer burnt offerings and (R)to sacrifice peace offerings. (S)Seven days you shall wait, until I come to you and show you what you shall do.”
9 When he turned his back to leave Samuel, God gave him another heart. And all these signs came to pass that day. 10 When they came to (T)Gibeah,[d] behold, a group of prophets met him, (U)and the Spirit of God rushed upon him, and he prophesied among them. 11 And when all who knew him previously saw how he prophesied with the prophets, the people said to one another, “What has come over the son of Kish? (V)Is Saul also among the prophets?” 12 And a man of the place answered, (W)“And who is their father?” Therefore it became a proverb, (X)“Is Saul also among the prophets?” 13 When he had finished prophesying, he came to the high place.
14 (Y)Saul's uncle said to him and to his servant, “Where did you go?” And he said, (Z)“To seek the donkeys. And when we saw they were not to be found, we went to Samuel.” 15 And Saul's uncle said, “Please tell me what Samuel said to you.” 16 And Saul said to his uncle, (AA)“He told us plainly that the donkeys had been found.” But about the matter of the kingdom, of which Samuel had spoken, he did not tell him anything.

17 Now Samuel called the people together (AB)to the Lord (AC)at Mizpah. 18 And he said to the people of Israel, (AD)“Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and I delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of all the kingdoms that were oppressing you.’ 19 (AE)But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses, and you have said to him, ‘Set a king over us.’ Now therefore (AF)present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and by your thousands.”
20 Then Samuel (AG)brought all the tribes of Israel near, and the tribe of Benjamin was taken by lot. 21 He brought the tribe of Benjamin near by its clans, and the clan of the Matrites was taken by lot;[e] and Saul the son of Kish was taken by lot. But when they sought him, he could not be found. 22 (AH)So they inquired again of the Lord, “Is there a man still to come?” and the Lord said, “Behold, he has hidden himself among the baggage.” 23 Then they ran and took him from there. And when he stood among the people, (AI)he was taller than any of the people from his shoulders upward. 24 And Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see him (AJ)whom the Lord has chosen? There is none like him among all the people.” And all the people shouted, (AK)“Long live the king!”
25 Then Samuel told the people (AL)the rights and duties of the kingship, and he wrote them in a book and laid it up before the Lord. Then Samuel sent all the people away, each one to his home. 26 Saul also went to his home (AM)at Gibeah, and with him went men of valor whose hearts God had touched. 27 But some (AN)worthless fellows said, “How can this man save us?” And they despised him and brought him no present. But he held his peace.

10 Then Samuel took a flask(A) of olive oil and poured it on Saul’s head and kissed him, saying, “Has not the Lord anointed(B) you ruler over his inheritance?[a](C) 2 When you leave me today, you will meet two men near Rachel’s tomb,(D) at Zelzah on the border of Benjamin. They will say to you, ‘The donkeys(E) you set out to look for have been found. And now your father has stopped thinking about them and is worried(F) about you. He is asking, “What shall I do about my son?”’
3 “Then you will go on from there until you reach the great tree of Tabor. Three men going up to worship God at Bethel(G) will meet you there. One will be carrying three young goats, another three loaves of bread, and another a skin of wine. 4 They will greet you and offer you two loaves of bread,(H) which you will accept from them.
5 “After that you will go to Gibeah(I) of God, where there is a Philistine outpost.(J) As you approach the town, you will meet a procession of prophets(K) coming down from the high place(L) with lyres, timbrels,(M) pipes(N) and harps(O) being played before them, and they will be prophesying.(P) 6 The Spirit(Q) of the Lord will come powerfully upon you, and you will prophesy with them; and you will be changed(R) into a different person. 7 Once these signs are fulfilled, do whatever(S) your hand(T) finds to do, for God is with(U) you.
8 “Go down ahead of me to Gilgal.(V) I will surely come down to you to sacrifice burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, but you must wait seven(W) days until I come to you and tell you what you are to do.”

9 As Saul turned to leave Samuel, God changed(X) Saul’s heart, and all these signs(Y) were fulfilled(Z) that day. 10 When he and his servant arrived at Gibeah, a procession of prophets met him; the Spirit(AA) of God came powerfully upon him, and he joined in their prophesying.(AB) 11 When all those who had formerly known him saw him prophesying with the prophets, they asked each other, “What is this(AC) that has happened to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?”(AD)
12 A man who lived there answered, “And who is their father?” So it became a saying: “Is Saul also among the prophets?”(AE) 13 After Saul stopped prophesying,(AF) he went to the high place.
14 Now Saul’s uncle(AG) asked him and his servant, “Where have you been?”
“Looking for the donkeys,(AH)” he said. “But when we saw they were not to be found, we went to Samuel.”
15 Saul’s uncle said, “Tell me what Samuel said to you.”
16 Saul replied, “He assured us that the donkeys(AI) had been found.” But he did not tell his uncle what Samuel had said about the kingship.
17 Samuel summoned the people of Israel to the Lord at Mizpah(AJ) 18 and said to them, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I brought Israel up out of Egypt, and I delivered you from the power of Egypt and all the kingdoms that oppressed(AK) you.’ 19 But you have now rejected(AL) your God, who saves(AM) you out of all your disasters and calamities. And you have said, ‘No, appoint a king(AN) over us.’(AO) So now present(AP) yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and clans.”
20 When Samuel had all Israel come forward by tribes, the tribe of Benjamin was taken by lot. 21 Then he brought forward the tribe of Benjamin, clan by clan, and Matri’s clan was taken.(AQ) Finally Saul son of Kish was taken. But when they looked for him, he was not to be found. 22 So they inquired(AR) further of the Lord, “Has the man come here yet?”
And the Lord said, “Yes, he has hidden himself among the supplies.”
23 They ran and brought him out, and as he stood among the people he was a head taller(AS) than any of the others. 24 Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see the man the Lord has chosen?(AT) There is no one like(AU) him among all the people.”
Then the people shouted, “Long live(AV) the king!”
25 Samuel explained(AW) to the people the rights and duties(AX) of kingship.(AY) He wrote them down on a scroll and deposited it before the Lord. Then Samuel dismissed the people to go to their own homes.
26 Saul also went to his home in Gibeah,(AZ) accompanied by valiant men(BA) whose hearts God had touched. 27 But some scoundrels(BB) said, “How can this fellow save us?” They despised him and brought him no gifts.(BC) But Saul kept silent.
