10 Entonces Samuel tomó un frasco de aceite y lo derramó sobre la cabeza de Saúl. Luego lo besó y dijo:
—¡Es el Señor quien te ha ungido para que gobiernes a su pueblo![a] 2 Hoy mismo, cuando te alejes de mí y llegues a Selsa, en el territorio de Benjamín, cerca de la tumba de Raquel verás a dos hombres. Ellos te dirán: “Ya encontramos las burras que andabas buscando. Pero tu padre ya no piensa en las burras, sino que ahora está preocupado por ustedes y se pregunta: ‘¿Qué puedo hacer para encontrar a mi hijo?’ ”.
3 »Más adelante, cuando llegues al gran árbol de Tabor, te encontrarás con tres hombres que se dirigen a Betel para adorar a Dios. Uno de ellos lleva tres cabritos; otro, tres panes; y el otro, un odre de vino. 4 Después de saludarte, te entregarán dos panes. Acéptalos.
5 »De ahí llegarás a Guibeá de Dios, donde hay una guarnición filistea. Al entrar en la ciudad te encontrarás con un grupo de profetas que bajan del santuario. Vendrán profetizando, precedidos por músicos que tocan liras, panderos, flautas y arpas. 6 Entonces el Espíritu del Señor vendrá sobre ti con poder, y tú profetizarás con ellos y serás una nueva persona. 7 Cuando se cumplan estas señales que has recibido, podrás hacer todo lo que esté a tu alcance, pues Dios estará contigo.
8 »Baja luego a Guilgal antes que yo. Allí me reuniré contigo para ofrecer holocaustos y sacrificios de comunión y, cuando llegue, te diré lo que tienes que hacer. Pero tú debes esperarme siete días».
Saúl es proclamado rey
9 Cuando Saúl se dio vuelta para alejarse de Samuel, Dios le cambió el corazón, y ese mismo día se cumplieron todas esas señales. 10 En efecto, al llegar Saúl y su criado a Guibeá, un grupo de profetas salió a su encuentro. Entonces el Espíritu de Dios vino con poder sobre Saúl, quien comenzó a profetizar con ellos. 11 Los que desde antes lo conocían, al verlo profetizar junto con los profetas, se preguntaban unos a otros:
—¿Qué le pasa a Saúl, hijo de Quis? ¿Acaso él también es uno de los profetas?
12 Alguien que vivía allí respondió:
—¿Y quién es el responsable[b] de ellos?
De ahí viene el dicho: «¿Acaso también Saúl es uno de los profetas?».
13 Cuando Saúl acabó de profetizar, subió al santuario. 14 Su tío preguntó a él y a su criado:
—¿Y ustedes dónde estaban?
—Andábamos buscando las burras —respondió Saúl—; pero como no dábamos con ellas, fuimos a ver a Samuel.
15 —Cuéntame lo que les dijo Samuel —pidió el tío de Saúl.
16 —Nos aseguró que ya habían encontrado las burras.
Sin embargo, Saúl no contó a su tío lo que Samuel había dicho acerca del reino.
17 Después de esto, Samuel convocó al pueblo de Israel para que se presentara ante el Señor en Mizpa. 18 Allí dijo a los israelitas: «Así dice el Señor, Dios de Israel: “Yo saqué a Israel de Egipto. Yo los libré a ustedes del poder de los egipcios y de todos los reinos que los oprimían”. 19 Ahora, sin embargo, ustedes han rechazado a su Dios, quien los libra de todas las calamidades y aflicciones. Han dicho: “¡No! ¡Danos un rey que nos gobierne!”. Por tanto, preséntense ahora ante el Señor por tribus y por familias».
20 Dicho esto, Samuel hizo que se acercaran todas las tribus de Israel y, al echar la suerte, fue escogida la tribu de Benjamín. 21 Luego mandó que se acercara la tribu de Benjamín, familia por familia, y la suerte cayó sobre la familia de Matri, y finalmente sobre Saúl, hijo de Quis. Entonces fueron a buscar a Saúl, pero no lo encontraron, 22 de modo que volvieron a consultar al Señor:
—¿Ha venido aquí ese hombre?
—Sí —respondió el Señor—, pero se ha escondido entre el equipaje.
23 Fueron corriendo y lo sacaron de allí. Y, cuando Saúl se puso en medio de la gente, vieron que era tan alto que nadie le llegaba al hombro. 24 Dijo entonces Samuel a todo el pueblo:
—¡Miren al hombre que el Señor ha escogido! ¡No hay nadie como él en todo el pueblo!
—¡Viva el rey! —exclamaron todos.
25 A continuación, Samuel explicó al pueblo las leyes del reino y las escribió en un libro que depositó ante el Señor. Luego mandó que todos regresaran a sus casas.
26 También Saúl se fue a su casa en Guibeá, acompañado por un grupo de hombres ilustres, a quienes Dios les había movido el corazón. 27 Pero algunos malvados protestaron: «¿Y este es el que nos va a salvar?». Y fue tanto su desprecio por Saúl que ni le ofrecieron regalos. Saúl, por su parte, no les hizo caso.

Samuel consagra a Saúl rey de Israel
10 Entonces Samuel tomó un recipiente con aceite y, derramándolo sobre la cabeza de Saúl, lo besó y le dijo:
—El Señor te consagra hoy gobernante de Israel, su pueblo. Tú lo gobernarás y lo librarás de los enemigos que lo rodean. Y ésta será la prueba de que el Señor te ha declarado gobernante de su pueblo: 2 Ahora que te separas de mí, encontrarás dos hombres cerca de la tumba de Raquel, en Selsah, en el territorio de Benjamín. Ellos te dirán que ya se han encontrado las asnas que buscabas, y que tu padre ya no está preocupado por ellas sino por ustedes, y se pregunta qué puede hacer por ti. 3 Más adelante, cuando llegues a la encina de Tabor, saldrán a tu encuentro tres hombres que suben a Betel para adorar a Dios. Uno llevará tres chivos, otro tres panes, y el tercero un cuero de vino. 4 Te saludarán y te ofrecerán dos panes. Acéptalos. 5 Después llegarás a Guibeá de Dios, donde hay una guarnición filistea. Al entrar en la ciudad, te encontrarás con un grupo de profetas en trance, que bajan del santuario. Delante de ellos irá gente tocando salterios, panderos, flautas y arpas. 6 Entonces el espíritu del Señor se apoderará de ti, y caerás en trance como ellos, y te transformarás en otro hombre. 7 Cuando te ocurran estas cosas, haz lo que creas conveniente, que Dios te ayudará. 8 Y adelántate a Guilgal, donde yo me reuniré contigo más tarde para ofrecer holocaustos y sacrificios de reconciliación. Espera allí siete días, hasta que yo llegue y te indique lo que tienes que hacer.
9 Tan pronto como Saúl se despidió de Samuel para irse, Dios le cambió el corazón; y aquel mismo día se cumplieron todas las señales. 10 Después, cuando Saúl y su criado llegaron a Guibeá, el grupo de profetas en trance les salió al encuentro. Entonces el espíritu de Dios se apoderó de Saúl, y éste cayó en trance profético, como ellos. 11 Pero todos los que lo conocían de antes, al verlo caer en trance junto con los profetas, se decían unos a otros: «¿Qué le ha pasado al hijo de Quis? ¿También Saúl es uno de los profetas?»
12 Uno de allí añadió: «¿Y quién es el padre de ellos?» De ahí viene el refrán: «¿También Saúl es uno de los profetas?»
13 Pasado el trance profético, Saúl llegó a su casa. 14 Y su tío les preguntó a él y a su criado:
—¿A dónde fueron?
Saúl respondió:
—A buscar las asnas. Pero viendo que no aparecían, fuimos a ver a Samuel.
15 El tío de Saúl contestó:
—¿Y qué les dijo Samuel? Cuéntamelo, por favor.
16 Saúl respondió a su tío:
—Nos dijo claramente que ya habían encontrado las asnas.
Pero Saúl no le mencionó nada del asunto del reino, del cual le había hablado Samuel. 17 Después llamó Samuel a los israelitas, para adorar al Señor en Mispá; 18 allí les dijo:
—El Señor, Dios de Israel, dice: “Yo saqué de Egipto a ustedes los israelitas, y los libré del poder de los egipcios y de todos los reinos que los oprimían.” 19 Pero ahora ustedes desprecian a su Dios, que los ha librado de todos sus problemas y aflicciones, y lo han rechazado al pedir que les ponga un rey que los gobierne. Por lo tanto, preséntense ahora delante del Señor por tribus y por clanes.
20 Luego ordenó Samuel que se acercaran todas las tribus de Israel, y la suerte cayó sobre la tribu de Benjamín. 21 A continuación ordenó que se acercaran los de la tribu de Benjamín, y la suerte cayó sobre el clan de Matrí, y de ella la suerte cayó sobre Saúl, hijo de Quis. Pero lo buscaron y no lo encontraron, 22 por lo que consultaron otra vez al Señor, para saber si Saúl se encontraba allí. Y el Señor respondió que Saúl ya estaba allí, y que se había escondido entre el equipaje. 23 Entonces corrieron a sacarlo de su escondite. Y cuando Saúl se presentó ante el pueblo, se vio que ningún israelita le pasaba del hombro. 24 Samuel preguntó a todos:
—¿Ya vieron al que el Señor ha escogido como rey? ¡No hay un solo israelita que pueda compararse con él!
—¡Viva el rey! —respondieron los israelitas.
25 En seguida Samuel expuso al pueblo las leyes del reino, y las escribió en un libro que depositó en el santuario del Señor. Después Samuel ordenó a todos que volvieran a sus casas. 26 También Saúl se fue a su casa, en Guibeá, y Dios influyó en el ánimo de varios valientes para que lo acompañaran. 27 Pero no faltaron malas lenguas, que dijeron: «¿Y éste es el que va a salvarnos?» Y lo menospreciaron y no le rindieron honores; pero Saúl se hizo el desentendido.

1 Then, from a flask he had with him, Samuel poured oil on Saul’s head and kissed him, saying: “The Lord anoints you ruler over his people Israel. You are the one who will govern the Lord’s people and save them from the power of their enemies all around them.(A)
The Signs Foretold. “This will be the sign[a] for you that the Lord has anointed you ruler over his heritage: 2 When you leave me today, you will meet two men near Rachel’s tomb[b] at Zelzah in the territory of Benjamin. They will say to you, ‘The donkeys you went to look for have been found. Now your father is no longer worried about the donkeys, but is anxious about you and says: What shall I do about my son?’(B) 3 Farther on, when you arrive at the oak of Tabor,[c] three men will meet you as they go up to God at Bethel; one will be bringing three young goats, another three loaves of bread, and the third a skin of wine. 4 They will greet you and offer you two elevated offerings of bread, which you should accept from them. 5 (C)After that you will come to Gibeath-elohim, where the Philistine garrison[d] is located. As you enter that city, you will meet a band of prophets coming down from the high place. They will be preceded by lyres, tambourines, flutes, and harps, and will be in prophetic ecstasy. 6 The spirit of the Lord will rush upon you, and you will join them in their prophetic ecstasy and will become a changed man.(D) 7 When these signs have come to pass, do whatever lies to hand, because God is with you. 8 (E)Now go down ahead of me to Gilgal, for I shall come down to you, to offer burnt offerings and to sacrifice communion offerings. Wait seven days until I come to you; I shall then tell you what you must do.”[e]
The Signs Come to Pass. 9 As Saul turned to leave Samuel, God changed his heart. That very day all these signs came to pass…. 10 [f]From there they arrived at Gibeah, where a band of prophets met Saul, and the spirit of God rushed upon him, so that he joined them in their prophetic ecstasy.(F) 11 When all who had known him previously saw him in a prophetic state among the prophets, they said to one another, “What has happened to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?”(G) 12 And someone from that district responded, “And who is their father?” Thus the saying arose, “Is Saul also among the prophets?” 13 When he came out of the prophetic ecstasy, he went home.
Silence About the Kingship. 14 Saul’s uncle asked him and his servant, “Where have you been?” Saul replied, “Looking for the donkeys. When we could not find them, we went to Samuel.” 15 Saul’s uncle said, “Tell me, then, what Samuel said to you.” 16 Saul said to his uncle, “He assured us that the donkeys had been found.” But Saul told him nothing about what Samuel had said about the kingship.
Saul Chosen King. 17 Samuel called the people together to the Lord at Mizpah(H) 18 and addressed the Israelites: “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: It was I who brought Israel up from Egypt and delivered you from the power of the Egyptians and from the power of all the kingdoms that oppressed you.(I) 19 But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your evils and calamities, by saying, ‘No! You must appoint a king over us.’ Now, therefore, take your stand before the Lord according to your tribes and families.”(J) 20 So Samuel had all the tribes of Israel come forward, and the tribe of Benjamin was chosen.[g] 21 Next he had the tribe of Benjamin come forward by clans, and the clan of Matri was chosen, and finally Saul, son of Kish, was chosen. But when they went to look for him, he was nowhere to be found. 22 (K)Again they consulted the Lord, “Is there still someone else to come forward?” The Lord answered: He is hiding among the baggage. 23 They ran to bring him from there; when he took his place among the people, he stood head and shoulders above all the people.(L) 24 Then Samuel addressed all the people, “Do you see the man whom the Lord has chosen? There is no one like him among all the people!” Then all the people shouted out, “Long live the king!”(M)
25 Samuel next explained to the people the rules of the monarchy,[h] wrote them in a book, and placed them before the presence of the Lord. Samuel then sent the people back to their own homes.(N) 26 Saul also went home to Gibeah, accompanied by warriors whose hearts the Lord had touched. 27 But some worthless people said, “How can this fellow save us?” They despised him and brought him no tribute.[i](O)

- 10:2 Here, as in Jer 31:15, Rachel’s tomb is placed at Ramah, north of Jerusalem. Later tradition understood Ephrath (Gn 35:19–20) as Bethlehem and placed the tomb farther south (Mt 2:16–18).
- 10:3 Oak of Tabor: or terebinth. Such a tree often indicates a shrine.
- 10:5 The Philistine garrison: the Hebrew word for “garrison” has been explained alternatively to mean a stele established to mark the Philistine occupation, or an inspector or officer for the collection of taxes. Prophetic ecstasy: a condition of religious enthusiasm often induced by communal rituals of music and dancing.
- 10:8 By inserting this verse, with its seven days, an editor has named in the very context of Saul’s anointing the condition which in a later narrative will be the grounds for the rejection of the dynastic character of Saul’s kingship (13:8–15).
- 10:10 An editor has abridged a longer version of this story by omitting mention of the first two signs Samuel has given (vv. 2–4).
- 10:20 Was chosen: probably by casting lots; cf. 14:40–42; Jos 7:14, 17.
- 10:25 Rules of the monarchy: a charter describing the relationship between the king and the people.
