10 Entonces Samuel tomó un frasco de aceite y lo derramó sobre la cabeza de Saúl; luego lo besó y le dijo:
«El Señor te ha ungido para que seas el rey de su pueblo Israel. 2 Hoy, después de que nos despidamos, vas a encontrar a dos hombres junto al sepulcro de Raquel, en Selsa, en las tierras de Benjamín; ellos te dirán que ya fueron halladas las asnas que andas buscando, y que tu padre ya no está preocupado por las asnas sino por ustedes, pues no sabe qué les ha sucedido. 3 Sigue tu camino, y cuando llegues a la encina de Tabor te encontrarás con tres hombres que van a adorar a Dios en Betel; uno de ellos llevará tres cabritos; otro, tres tortas de pan; y el tercero, un odre de vino. 4 Después de saludarte, ellos te darán dos panes, y los debes aceptar. 5 Cuando llegues a la colina de Dios, donde está la guarnición de los filisteos, y luego de que entres en la ciudad, te encontrarás con un grupo de profetas que descienden del santuario que está en el cerro. Irán profetizando y tocando salterios, panderos, flautas y arpas. 6 En ese momento el espíritu del Señor vendrá sobre ti con su poder, y profetizarás con ellos, y el cambio en ti será notable pues actuarás como si fueras otro hombre. 7 Cuando sucedan estas señales, haz lo que te venga a la mano hacer, porque Dios está contigo. 8 Luego te adelantarás para llegar a Gilgal antes que yo; siete días después yo me reuniré contigo, y juntos iremos a ofrecer holocaustos y ofrendas de paz al Señor. Espérame hasta que yo llegue y te indique lo que debes hacer.»
9 En cuanto Saúl le dio la espalda a Samuel para irse, Dios le cambió todo su carácter, y ese mismo día sucedió todo lo que Samuel le había dicho. 10 Al llegar a la colina, vieron que el grupo de profetas venía al encuentro de Saúl. Entonces el espíritu de Dios vino sobre él con todo su poder, y Saúl comenzó a profetizar. 11 Y cuando todos los que lo conocían lo vieron profetizar junto con los otros profetas, se preguntaron los unos a los otros:
«¿Qué le pasa al hijo de Cis? ¿Acaso también él es profeta?»
12 Uno de ellos exclamó:
«¡Hoy día, cualquiera es profeta!»[a]
Por eso es tan popular el dicho: «¿También Saúl anda entre los profetas?»(A)
13 En cuanto Saúl llegó al santuario en el cerro dejó de profetizar. 14 Entonces uno de sus tíos les preguntó a Saúl y a su criado:
«¿Y ustedes, dónde andaban?»
Y Saúl le respondió:
«Anduvimos buscando las asnas perdidas, pero como no las encontrábamos, fuimos a consultar a Samuel.»
15 Y el tío de Saúl le dijo:
«Te ruego que me digas lo que les dijo Samuel.»
16 Y Saúl le respondió:
«Claramente nos dijo que las asnas ya habían sido halladas.»
Sin embargo, Saúl no le dijo nada de lo que Samuel le había dicho en cuanto al reino. 17 Más tarde, Samuel pidió al pueblo que se reuniera ante el Señor en Mispá, 18 y les dijo a los israelitas:
«Así dice el Señor, el Dios de Israel: “Yo los saqué a ustedes de Egipto. Yo los libré de poder de los egipcios, y de todos los reinos que los afligían. 19 Pero ustedes me rechazan como su Dios, aunque yo los protejo de todas sus aflicciones y angustias, y ahora quieren que los gobierne un rey. Pues ya que piensan así, preséntense ante mí, el Señor, en el orden de sus tribus y familias.”»
20 Una vez que se reunieron todas las tribus de Israel, Samuel ordenó que se acercara la tribu de Benjamín. 21 Luego hizo que se acercara la tribu de Benjamín, en el orden de sus familias; luego pidió que se acercara la familia de Matri, y de ella pidió que se acercara Saúl hijo de Cis. Lo buscaron entonces, pero no lo hallaron, 22 así que le preguntaron al Señor por qué Saúl no estaba allí, y el Señor les dijo:
«Búsquenlo entre el equipaje, pues allí está escondido.»
23 Entonces fueron a buscarlo allí, y lo pusieron en medio del pueblo. Y todos pudieron ver que Saúl era más alto que todos. No había quien le llegara a los hombros. 24 Y Samuel le dijo a todo el pueblo:
«Ante ustedes está el hombre que el Señor ha elegido. Como pueden ver, no hay en todo el pueblo nadie que se le compare.»
Y el pueblo lo aclamó alegremente, y gritaba: «¡Viva el rey!» 25 Después Samuel expuso al pueblo las leyes del reino, y las escribió en un libro y las guardó en presencia del Señor. 26 Luego, Samuel envió al pueblo de regreso, cada uno a su casa, y Saúl también regresó a su casa en Gabaa, acompañado de hombres valerosos, a quienes Dios tocó el corazón. 27 Pero no faltaron algunos perversos que dijeron: «¿Y éste es el que nos va a salvar?» Y como lo menospreciaron, tampoco le presentaron regalos. Pero Saúl no les dio importancia.

10 Tomando entonces Samuel una redoma de aceite, la derramó sobre su cabeza, y lo besó, y le dijo: ¿No te ha ungido Jehová por príncipe sobre su pueblo Israel? 2 Hoy, después que te hayas apartado de mí, hallarás dos hombres junto al sepulcro de Raquel, en el territorio de Benjamín, en Selsa, los cuales te dirán: Las asnas que habías ido a buscar se han hallado; tu padre ha dejado ya de inquietarse por las asnas, y está afligido por vosotros, diciendo: ¿Qué haré acerca de mi hijo? 3 Y luego que de allí sigas más adelante, y llegues a la encina de Tabor, te saldrán al encuentro tres hombres que suben a Dios en Bet-el, llevando uno tres cabritos, otro tres tortas de pan, y el tercero una vasija de vino; 4 los cuales, luego que te hayan saludado, te darán dos panes, los que tomarás de mano de ellos. 5 Después de esto llegarás al collado de Dios donde está la guarnición de los filisteos; y cuando entres allá en la ciudad encontrarás una compañía de profetas que descienden del lugar alto, y delante de ellos salterio, pandero, flauta y arpa, y ellos profetizando. 6 Entonces el Espíritu de Jehová vendrá sobre ti con poder, y profetizarás con ellos, y serás mudado en otro hombre. 7 Y cuando te hayan sucedido estas señales, haz lo que te viniere a la mano, porque Dios está contigo. 8 Luego bajarás delante de mí a Gilgal; entonces descenderé yo a ti para ofrecer holocaustos y sacrificar ofrendas de paz. Espera siete días, hasta que yo venga a ti y te enseñe lo que has de hacer.
9 Aconteció luego, que al volver él la espalda para apartarse de Samuel, le mudó Dios su corazón; y todas estas señales acontecieron en aquel día. 10 Y cuando llegaron allá al collado, he aquí la compañía de los profetas que venía a encontrarse con él; y el Espíritu de Dios vino sobre él con poder, y profetizó entre ellos. 11 Y aconteció que cuando todos los que le conocían antes vieron que profetizaba con los profetas, el pueblo decía el uno al otro: ¿Qué le ha sucedido al hijo de Cis? ¿Saúl también entre los profetas? 12 Y alguno de allí respondió diciendo: ¿Y quién es el padre de ellos? Por esta causa se hizo proverbio: ¿También Saúl entre los profetas?(A) 13 Y cesó de profetizar, y llegó al lugar alto.
14 Un tío de Saúl dijo a él y a su criado: ¿A dónde fuisteis? Y él respondió: A buscar las asnas; y como vimos que no aparecían, fuimos a Samuel. 15 Dijo el tío de Saúl: Yo te ruego me declares qué os dijo Samuel. 16 Y Saúl respondió a su tío: Nos declaró expresamente que las asnas habían sido halladas. Mas del asunto del reino, de que Samuel le había hablado, no le descubrió nada.
17 Después Samuel convocó al pueblo delante de Jehová en Mizpa, 18 y dijo a los hijos de Israel: Así ha dicho Jehová el Dios de Israel: Yo saqué a Israel de Egipto, y os libré de mano de los egipcios, y de mano de todos los reinos que os afligieron. 19 Pero vosotros habéis desechado hoy a vuestro Dios, que os guarda de todas vuestras aflicciones y angustias, y habéis dicho: No, sino pon rey sobre nosotros. Ahora, pues, presentaos delante de Jehová por vuestras tribus y por vuestros millares.
20 Y haciendo Samuel que se acercasen todas las tribus de Israel, fue tomada la tribu de Benjamín. 21 E hizo llegar la tribu de Benjamín por sus familias, y fue tomada la familia de Matri; y de ella fue tomado Saúl hijo de Cis. Y le buscaron, pero no fue hallado. 22 Preguntaron, pues, otra vez a Jehová si aún no había venido allí aquel varón. Y respondió Jehová: He aquí que él está escondido entre el bagaje. 23 Entonces corrieron y lo trajeron de allí; y puesto en medio del pueblo, desde los hombros arriba era más alto que todo el pueblo. 24 Y Samuel dijo a todo el pueblo: ¿Habéis visto al que ha elegido Jehová, que no hay semejante a él en todo el pueblo? Entonces el pueblo clamó con alegría, diciendo: ¡Viva el rey!
25 Samuel recitó luego al pueblo las leyes del reino, y las escribió en un libro, el cual guardó delante de Jehová. 26 Y envió Samuel a todo el pueblo cada uno a su casa. Saúl también se fue a su casa en Gabaa, y fueron con él los hombres de guerra cuyos corazones Dios había tocado. 27 Pero algunos perversos dijeron: ¿Cómo nos ha de salvar este? Y le tuvieron en poco, y no le trajeron presente; mas él disimuló.

10 Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the Lord hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?
2 When thou art departed from me to day, then thou shalt find two men by Rachel's sepulchre in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say unto thee, The asses which thou wentest to seek are found: and, lo, thy father hath left the care of the asses, and sorroweth for you, saying, What shall I do for my son?
3 Then shalt thou go on forward from thence, and thou shalt come to the plain of Tabor, and there shall meet thee three men going up to God to Bethel, one carrying three kids, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a bottle of wine:
4 And they will salute thee, and give thee two loaves of bread; which thou shalt receive of their hands.
5 After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines: and it shall come to pass, when thou art come thither to the city, that thou shalt meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place with a psaltery, and a tabret, and a pipe, and a harp, before them; and they shall prophesy:
6 And the Spirit of the Lord will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man.
7 And let it be, when these signs are come unto thee, that thou do as occasion serve thee; for God is with thee.
8 And thou shalt go down before me to Gilgal; and, behold, I will come down unto thee, to offer burnt offerings, and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace offerings: seven days shalt thou tarry, till I come to thee, and shew thee what thou shalt do.
9 And it was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass that day.
10 And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.
11 And it came to pass, when all that knew him beforetime saw that, behold, he prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is this that is come unto the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?
12 And one of the same place answered and said, But who is their father? Therefore it became a proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets?
13 And when he had made an end of prophesying, he came to the high place.
14 And Saul's uncle said unto him and to his servant, Whither went ye? And he said, To seek the asses: and when we saw that they were no where, we came to Samuel.
15 And Saul's uncle said, Tell me, I pray thee, what Samuel said unto you.
16 And Saul said unto his uncle, He told us plainly that the asses were found. But of the matter of the kingdom, whereof Samuel spake, he told him not.
17 And Samuel called the people together unto the Lord to Mizpeh;
18 And said unto the children of Israel, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all kingdoms, and of them that oppressed you:
19 And ye have this day rejected your God, who himself saved you out of all your adversities and your tribulations; and ye have said unto him, Nay, but set a king over us. Now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes, and by your thousands.
20 And when Samuel had caused all the tribes of Israel to come near, the tribe of Benjamin was taken.
21 When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, the family of Matri was taken, and Saul the son of Kish was taken: and when they sought him, he could not be found.
22 Therefore they enquired of the Lord further, if the man should yet come thither. And the Lord answered, Behold he hath hid himself among the stuff.
23 And they ran and fetched him thence: and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward.
24 And Samuel said to all the people, See ye him whom the Lord hath chosen, that there is none like him among all the people? And all the people shouted, and said, God save the king.
25 Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before the Lord. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.
26 And Saul also went home to Gibeah; and there went with him a band of men, whose hearts God had touched.
27 But the children of Belial said, How shall this man save us? And they despised him, and brought no presents. But he held his peace.

9 So it was, when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, that God [c]gave him another heart; and all those signs came to pass that day. 10 (R)When they came there to the hill, there was (S)a group of prophets to meet him; then the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them. 11 And it happened, when all who knew him formerly saw that he indeed prophesied among the prophets, that the people said to one another, “What is this that has come upon the son of Kish? (T)Is Saul also among the prophets?” 12 Then a man from there answered and said, “But (U)who is their father?” Therefore it became a proverb: “Is Saul also among the prophets?” 13 And when he had finished prophesying, he went to the high place.
14 Then Saul’s (V)uncle said to him and his servant, “Where did you go?”
So he said, “To look for the donkeys. When we saw that they were nowhere to be found, we went to Samuel.”
15 And Saul’s uncle said, “Tell me, please, what Samuel said to you.”
16 So Saul said to his uncle, “He told us plainly that the donkeys had been (W)found.” But about the matter of the kingdom, he did not tell him what Samuel had said.
Saul Proclaimed King
17 Then Samuel called the people together (X)to the Lord (Y)at Mizpah, 18 and said to the children of Israel, (Z)“Thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of all kingdoms and from those who oppressed you.’ 19 (AA)But you have today rejected your God, who Himself saved you from all your adversities and your tribulations; and you have said to Him, ‘No, set a king over us!’ Now therefore, present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and by your [d]clans.”
20 And when Samuel had (AB)caused all the tribes of Israel to come near, the tribe of Benjamin was chosen. 21 When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, the family of Matri was chosen. And Saul the son of Kish was chosen. But when they sought him, he could not be found. 22 Therefore they (AC)inquired of the Lord further, “Has the man come here yet?”
And the Lord answered, “There he is, hidden among the equipment.”
23 So they ran and brought him from there; and when he stood among the people, (AD)he was taller than any of the people from his shoulders upward. 24 And Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see him (AE)whom the Lord has chosen, that there is no one like him among all the people?”
So all the people shouted and said, (AF)“Long[e] live the king!”
25 Then Samuel explained to the people (AG)the behavior of royalty, and wrote it in a book and laid it up before the Lord. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house. 26 And Saul also went home (AH)to Gibeah; and valiant men went with him, whose hearts God had touched. 27 (AI)But some (AJ)rebels said, “How can this man save us?” So they despised him, (AK)and brought him no presents. But he [f]held his peace.
