De Filistijnen veroveren de kist van Gods verbond
4 Op een keer gingen de Israëlieten strijden tegen de Filistijnen. Ze zetten hun kamp op bij Eben-Haëzer. De Filistijnen hadden hun kamp opgezet bij Afek. 2 De twee legers stelden zich tegenover elkaar op. De strijd begon en Israël werd verslagen. Ongeveer 4000 Israëlieten werden gedood. 3 Toen het leger in het kamp terugkwam, zeiden de leiders van Israël: "Waarom heeft de Heer ons de strijd laten verliezen? Laten we de kist van het verbond van de Heer uit Silo halen en bij ons in het legerkamp neerzetten. De kist van de Heer zal ons redden van onze vijanden." 4 Ze lieten de kist van het verbond uit Silo komen, de kist van de Heer van de hemelse legers die tussen de engelen troont.[a] Hofni en Pinehas, de twee zonen van Eli, kwamen mee. 5 Zodra de kist van de Heer het kamp werd binnengedragen, begon iedereen zó luid te juichen, dat de aarde ervan dreunde.
6 Toen de Filistijnen het gejuich hoorden, vroegen ze: "Waarom juichen ze zo hard in het kamp van de Hebreeën?" Toen ze hoorden dat de kist van de Heer in het kamp was gekomen, werden ze bang. 7 Ze zeiden: "Wat moeten we doen? Hun God is in hun kamp gekomen. Zoiets is nog nooit gebeurd! 8 Nu zal het slecht met ons aflopen! Want wie kan ons uit de macht van deze geweldige God redden? Het is dezelfde God die de Egyptenaren in de woestijn met allerlei rampen heeft gestraft. 9 Wees vastberaden, mannen, en vecht met alles wat je in je hebt! Anders moeten we de Hebreeën dienen, net zoals zij eerst ons gediend hebben. Wees dapper en vecht!" 10 Toen vielen de Filistijnen de Israëlieten aan en versloegen hen. De Israëlieten sloegen op de vlucht en wel 30.000 van hen werden gedood. Het was een zeer grote nederlaag. 11 Ook Hofni en Pinehas, de twee zonen van Eli, werden gedood. En de kist van het verbond werd door de Filistijnen meegenomen als buit.
De dood van Eli
12 Een man uit de stam van Benjamin rende van het slagveld naar Silo. Hij kwam daar nog dezelfde dag aan. Hij had zijn kleren gescheurd en aarde op zijn hoofd gedaan als teken van verdriet. 13 Eli zat op zijn stoel aan de kant van de weg op nieuws te wachten. Hij was erg ongerust over de kist van God. Toen de man de stad binnenkwam en het nieuws vertelde, schreeuwden de bewoners van de stad het uit van ontzetting. 14 Eli hoorde het en vroeg: "Waarom wordt er zo geschreeuwd?" De man ging haastig naar Eli en vertelde hem het nieuws. 15 Eli was 98 jaar oud en hij was blind van ouderdom. 16 De man zei tegen Eli: "Ik ben net van het slagveld gevlucht." Eli vroeg: "Wat is er gebeurd, mijn zoon?" De boodschapper antwoordde: 17 "Israël is voor de Filistijnen op de vlucht geslagen. We hebben de strijd verloren en heel veel mannen zijn gedood. Ook uw twee zonen, Hofni en Pinehas, zijn dood. En de kist van God is als buit meegenomen." 18 Toen de man zei wat er met de kist van God was gebeurd, viel Eli daar bij de poort achterover van zijn stoel. Doordat hij oud en zwaar was, brak hij zijn nek en stierf. Hij was 40 jaar leider van Israël geweest.
19 De vrouw van Pinehas was in verwachting en haar kind moest al bijna geboren worden. Toen ze hoorde dat de kist van God als buit was meegenomen en dat haar man en zijn vader allebei dood waren, kreeg ze weeën en het kind werd geboren. 20 Het was een moeilijke bevalling en ze zou sterven. De vrouwen die haar waren komen helpen, zeiden: "Je kan gerust zijn, want je hebt een zoon gekregen." Maar ze antwoordde niets en liet zich niet bemoedigen. 21+22 Ze noemde het kind Ikabod (= 'de eer is weggenomen'). "Want," zei ze, "de eer is uit Israël weggenomen." Dat zei ze omdat de kist van God als buit was meegenomen en omdat haar man en zijn vader allebei dood waren.

De ark door de Filistijnen buitgemaakt
4 Samuël gaf deze woorden door aan het volk Israël. De Israëlieten hadden hun kamp opgeslagen bij Eben-Haëzer en de Filistijnen lagen bij Afek. 2 In de slag die volgde, versloegen de Filistijnen de Israëlieten en doodden zoʼn vierduizend man. 3 Daarna keerde het Israëlitische leger terug naar het kamp, waar de leiders zich afvroegen waarom de Here had toegelaten dat zij werden verslagen. ‘Laten wij de ark van het verbond met de Here vanuit Silo hierheen brengen,’ besloten zij. ‘Als wij hem meenemen wanneer we oorlog voeren, zal God bij ons zijn en ons zeker bevrijden van onze vijanden.’ 4 Dus lieten zij de ark van het verbond met de Here, die boven de cherubs troont, uit Silo halen. Hofni en Pinechas, de zonen van Eli, begeleidden de ark.
5 Toen de Israëlieten de ark zagen aankomen, ontstond er zoʼn gejuich dat de aarde dreunde! 6 De Filistijnen vroegen zich af: ‘Wat is dat voor een gejuich in het kamp van de Hebreeën?’ Toen hun werd verteld dat het gejuich werd veroorzaakt door de aankomst van de ark, 7 werden ze bang. ‘Hun God is in hun kamp gekomen!’ riepen zij. ‘Wat moeten we nu? Zoiets hebben wij nog nooit meegemaakt! 8 Wie kan ons bevrijden van deze machtige God van Israël? Het is dezelfde God die de Egyptenaren met plagen vernietigde voor Israël de woestijn introk. 9 Wees moedig en vecht voor uw leven, Filistijnen, anders worden wij slaven van de Hebreeën, net zoals zij dat van ons zijn geweest.’
10 Toen vochten de Filistijnen opnieuw met de Israëlieten en versloegen hen weer. Die dag sneuvelden dertigduizend Israëlieten. De overlevenden vluchtten naar hun tenten. 11 Bovendien werd de ark van God buitgemaakt en de twee zonen van Eli, Hofni en Pinechas, kwamen om.
12 Een man uit de stam van Benjamin verliet met spoed het slagveld en kwam nog diezelfde dag in Silo aan. Zijn kleren waren gescheurd en hij had stof op zijn hoofd, als teken van groot verdriet. 13 Eli zat langs de kant van de weg te wachten op nieuws over de strijd, want hij was erg ongerust over de ark van God. Toen de boodschapper aankwam en in de stad vertelde wat er was gebeurd, steeg een luid gejammer op. 14 ‘Waarom wordt daar zo geschreeuwd?’ vroeg Eli. De boodschapper kwam snel naar hem toe om het nieuws te vertellen. 15 Eli was achtennegentig jaar en totaal blind, want hij leed aan staar. 16 ‘Ik kom net van het slagveld, ik was daar vandaag nog,’ vertelde hij Eli. 17 ‘Israël is verslagen. Duizenden Israëlieten zijn gesneuveld, ook Hofni en Pinechas. En de ark is in handen van de Filistijnen gevallen.’ 18 Toen de boodschapper vertelde wat met de ark was gebeurd, viel Eli achterover van zijn stoel bij de poort. Bij die val brak hij zijn nek en stierf, want hij was oud en zwaar. Hij had Israël veertig jaar geleid.
19 Toen de vrouw van Pinechas, die in verwachting was, hoorde dat de ark door de Filistijnen was buitgemaakt en dat haar man en haar schoonvader dood waren, kromp zij ineen. Plotseling zetten de weeën bij haar in. 20 Zij stierf bij de bevalling. Vlak daarvoor vertelden de vrouwen die haar bij de bevalling hielpen, dat alles goed was en zij een jongetje ter wereld had gebracht. Maar zij kon nauwelijks antwoorden. 21,22 Toen fluisterde zij: ‘Ik noem het kind Ikabod, want Israëls eer is verdwenen.’ Ikabod betekent ‘er is geen eer.’ Zij noemde hem zo omdat de ark van God was buitgemaakt en haar man en schoonvader dood waren.

4 Samuel transmettait à tout Israël la parole que l’Eternel lui adressait.
Le coffre de l’alliance aux mains des Philistins
[En ce temps-là, les Philistins se rassemblèrent pour faire la guerre à Israël et[a]] les Israélites se mirent en campagne pour les affronter. Ils dressèrent leur camp près d’Eben-Ezer et les Philistins établirent le leur à Apheq[b]. 2 Les Philistins se rangèrent en ordre de bataille pour affronter les Israélites. Le combat s’amplifia, les Philistins défirent les Israélites et tuèrent dans leurs rangs environ quatre mille hommes sur le champ de bataille. 3 Lorsque le peuple regagna le camp, les responsables d’Israël se demandèrent : Pourquoi l’Eternel nous a-t-il fait battre aujourd’hui par les Philistins ? Allons chercher le coffre de l’alliance de l’Eternel à Silo et ramenons-le au milieu de nous pour qu’il nous délivre de nos ennemis.
4 On envoya donc des gens à Silo et ils en ramenèrent le coffre de l’alliance de l’Eternel, le Seigneur des armées célestes qui trône entre les chérubins[c]. Les deux fils d’Eli, Hophni et Phinéas, accompagnèrent le coffre de l’alliance de Dieu.
5 Dès que le coffre arriva au camp, tous les Israélites poussèrent de si grands cris de joie que la terre en fut ébranlée. 6 En entendant ces acclamations, les Philistins se demandèrent ce que signifiaient ces grands cris dans le camp des Hébreux. Ils apprirent que le coffre de l’Eternel était arrivé au camp. 7 Alors ils prirent peur car ils se disaient : Dieu est venu dans le camp des Hébreux ! Et ils ajoutaient : Malheur à nous ! Il n’en était pas ainsi auparavant. 8 Malheur à nous ! Qui nous délivrera de ces dieux puissants ? Ce sont ces dieux-là[d] qui ont infligé toutes sortes de coups aux Egyptiens dans le désert[e]. 9 Philistins, soyez forts, soyez des hommes, sinon vous deviendrez les esclaves des Hébreux comme ils ont été les vôtres. Soyez donc des hommes et combattez !
10 Les Philistins livrèrent bataille et Israël fut vaincu. Chacun s’enfuit sous sa tente et ce fut une très lourde défaite : Israël perdit trente mille hommes. 11 Le coffre de Dieu fut pris par les Philistins et les deux fils d’Eli, Hophni et Phinéas, moururent.
La mort d’Eli et de sa belle-fille
12 Un homme de Benjamin s’échappa du champ de bataille et courut jusqu’à Silo le jour même ; il avait déchiré ses vêtements et couvert sa tête de poussière en signe de deuil. 13 Au moment où il arriva, Eli était assis sur son siège, aux aguets près de la route, car il était très inquiet au sujet du coffre de Dieu. L’homme vint annoncer la nouvelle dans la ville, et tous les habitants se mirent à pousser de grands cris. 14 Quand Eli entendit ces cris, il demanda : Que signifie ce tumulte de la foule ?
L’homme se dépêcha de venir lui annoncer la nouvelle. 15 Or Eli était âgé de quatre-vingt-dix-huit ans, il avait les yeux éteints, il était complètement aveugle. 16 L’homme dit à Eli : J’arrive du champ de bataille. Je m’en suis enfui aujourd’hui même.
– Et que s’est-il passé, mon fils ? lui demanda Eli.
17 Le messager lui répondit : Israël a pris la fuite devant les Philistins ; nous avons subi une terrible défaite ; même tes deux fils Hophni et Phinéas sont morts, et le coffre de Dieu a été pris.
18 Lorsque le messager fit mention du coffre de Dieu, Eli tomba de son siège à la renverse, à côté de la porte du sanctuaire, il se brisa la nuque et mourut, car il était âgé et lourd. Il avait dirigé Israël pendant quarante ans.
19 Quand sa belle-fille, la femme de Phinéas qui arrivait au terme de sa grossesse, entendit que le coffre de Dieu avait été pris et que son beau-père ainsi que son mari étaient morts, elle chancela[f] et, brusquement prise de contractions, elle accoucha. 20 Comme elle était près de mourir, les femmes qui l’entouraient lui dirent : Rassure-toi : c’est un garçon.
Mais elle y fut indifférente et ne répondit rien. 21 Elle donna à l’enfant le nom d’I-Kabod (Plus de gloire), en expliquant : La gloire divine a quitté Israël.
Elle pensait au coffre de Dieu qui avait été pris, à son beau-père et à son mari.
22 Elle s’écria encore : Oui, la gloire a quitté Israël, car le coffre de Dieu a été pris.

4 And Samuel’s word came to all Israel.
The Philistines Capture the Ark
Now the Israelites went out to fight against the Philistines. The Israelites camped at Ebenezer,(A) and the Philistines at Aphek.(B) 2 The Philistines deployed their forces to meet Israel, and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand of them on the battlefield. 3 When the soldiers returned to camp, the elders of Israel asked, “Why(C) did the Lord bring defeat on us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark(D) of the Lord’s covenant from Shiloh,(E) so that he may go with us(F) and save us from the hand of our enemies.”
4 So the people sent men to Shiloh, and they brought back the ark of the covenant of the Lord Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim.(G) And Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
5 When the ark of the Lord’s covenant came into the camp, all Israel raised such a great shout(H) that the ground shook. 6 Hearing the uproar, the Philistines asked, “What’s all this shouting in the Hebrew(I) camp?”
When they learned that the ark of the Lord had come into the camp, 7 the Philistines were afraid.(J) “A god has[a] come into the camp,” they said. “Oh no! Nothing like this has happened before. 8 We’re doomed! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? They are the gods who struck(K) the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues(L) in the wilderness. 9 Be strong, Philistines! Be men, or you will be subject to the Hebrews, as they(M) have been to you. Be men, and fight!”
10 So the Philistines fought, and the Israelites were defeated(N) and every man fled to his tent. The slaughter was very great; Israel lost thirty thousand foot soldiers. 11 The ark of God was captured, and Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died.(O)
Death of Eli
12 That same day a Benjamite(P) ran from the battle line and went to Shiloh with his clothes torn and dust(Q) on his head. 13 When he arrived, there was Eli(R) sitting on his chair by the side of the road, watching, because his heart feared for the ark of God. When the man entered the town and told what had happened, the whole town sent up a cry.
14 Eli heard the outcry and asked, “What is the meaning of this uproar?”
The man hurried over to Eli, 15 who was ninety-eight years old and whose eyes(S) had failed so that he could not see. 16 He told Eli, “I have just come from the battle line; I fled from it this very day.”
Eli asked, “What happened, my son?”
17 The man who brought the news replied, “Israel fled before the Philistines, and the army has suffered heavy losses. Also your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead,(T) and the ark of God has been captured.”(U)
18 When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backward off his chair by the side of the gate. His neck was broken and he died, for he was an old man, and he was heavy. He had led[b](V) Israel forty years.(W)
19 His daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and near the time of delivery. When she heard the news that the ark of God had been captured and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she went into labor and gave birth, but was overcome by her labor pains. 20 As she was dying, the women attending her said, “Don’t despair; you have given birth to a son.” But she did not respond or pay any attention.
21 She named the boy Ichabod,[c](X) saying, “The Glory(Y) has departed from Israel”—because of the capture of the ark of God and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband. 22 She said, “The Glory(Z) has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured.”(AA)

4 And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Ebenezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek.
2 And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines: and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.
3 And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the Lord smitten us to day before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the Lord out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.
4 So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from thence the ark of the covenant of the Lord of hosts, which dwelleth between the cherubims: and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
5 And when the ark of the covenant of the Lord came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again.
6 And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the Lord was come into the camp.
7 And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretofore.
8 Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness.
9 Be strong and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight.
10 And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man into his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.
11 And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.
12 And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head.
13 And when he came, lo, Eli sat upon a seat by the wayside watching: for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out.
14 And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And the man came in hastily, and told Eli.
15 Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were dim, that he could not see.
16 And the man said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said, What is there done, my son?
17 And the messenger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken.
18 And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.
19 And his daughter in law, Phinehas' wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed; for her pains came upon her.
20 And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it.
21 And she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.
22 And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken.
