David strijdt tegen de Filistijnen
23 David hoorde dat de stad Kehila door de Filistijnen was aangevallen. Ze hadden al het graan uit de voorraadschuren geroofd. 2 Toen vroeg hij aan de Heer: "Zal ik erheen gaan en deze Filistijnen verslaan?" De Heer antwoordde: "Ga de Filistijnen verslaan en bevrijd Kehila." 3 Maar Davids mannen zeiden tegen hem: "Het is zó al heel gevaarlijk voor ons om hier in het gebied van Juda te wonen. Als we naar Kehila gaan en het leger van de Filistijnen aanvallen, wordt het nog gevaarlijker voor ons." 4 Toen vroeg David het opnieuw aan de Heer. De Heer antwoordde: "Ga naar Kehila, want Ik zal de Filistijnen in jullie macht geven." 5 Toen trok David met zijn mannen naar Kehila en viel de Filistijnen aan. Hij versloeg hen en nam al hun vee mee. Zo redde David de bewoners van Kehila.
6 Toen Abjatar, de zoon van Achimelech, naar David bij Kehila vluchtte, had hij de borsttas met de beslissings-stenen van de hogepriester meegebracht.[a]
Saul achtervolgt David
7 Saul hoorde dat David naar Kehila was gekomen. Toen zei hij: "God heeft hem in mijn macht gegeven. Want nu hij een ommuurde stad is ingegaan, zit hij in de val." 8 En hij riep het leger bij elkaar om naar Kehila te gaan. Hij wilde David en zijn mannen belegeren.
9 David hoorde wat Saul van plan was. Hij beval de priester Abjatar: "Breng mij de borsttas met de beslissings-stenen." 10 En David zei: "Heer, God van Israël, ik heb gehoord dat Saul van plan is om naar Kehila te komen. Omdat ik hier ben, zal hij de stad verwoesten. 11 Zullen de bewoners van Kehila mij aan hem uitleveren? Is Saul inderdaad onderweg? Heer, God van Israël, vertel het me alstublieft." De Heer antwoordde: "Saul is onderweg." 12 Daarna vroeg David: "Zullen de bewoners van Kehila mij en mijn mannen aan Saul uitleveren?" De Heer zei: "Ze zullen jullie uitleveren." 13 Daarom verlieten David en zijn 600 mannen Kehila en trokken rond. Ze bleven nergens lang. Toen Saul hoorde dat David uit Kehila was ontsnapt, ging hij terug naar huis.
14 David woonde in berggrotten in de Zif-woestijn. Saul zocht alle dagen naar hem. Maar God zorgde ervoor dat hij hem niet kon vinden. 15 David hoorde dat Saul hem zocht en hem wilde doden. Hij verborg zich in een bos bij de Zif-woestijn. 16 Daar zocht Jonatan hem op. 17 Hij moedigde David aan om op God te vertrouwen en zei tegen hem: "Wees niet bang, want mijn vader Saul zal je niet vinden. Jij zal koning van Israël worden en ik zal je legeraanvoerder en raadgever zijn. Mijn vader Saul weet dat maar al te goed." 18 Toen sloten die twee een verbond bij de Heer. David bleef in het bos, maar Jonatan ging naar huis terug.
19 Maar een paar mannen uit Zif gingen naar Saul in Gibea. Ze zeiden: "Weet u wel dat David zich bij ons verborgen heeft? Hij zit in de berggrotten in de bossen op de heuvel van Hachila, aan de zuidkant van de woestijn. 20 U kan hem gerust komen halen, mijn heer de koning. We zullen hem aan u uitleveren." 21 Saul zei: "De Heer zal jullie belonen, omdat jullie voor mij opkomen! 22 Ga terug en probeer er achter te komen waar hij precies zit en wie hem daar heeft gezien. Want ze hebben me gezegd dat hij erg sluw is. 23 Probeer te weten te komen waar precies zijn schuilplaatsen zijn. Kom dan bij mij terug en breng mij verslag uit. Dan zal ik met jullie meegaan. Als hij in het land is, zal ik hem vinden, ook al wonen er duizenden mensen in het gebied van Juda." 24 De mannen gingen onmiddellijk terug naar Zif, voor Saul uit. David en zijn mannen waren in de Maon-woestijn, in de vlakte aan de zuidkant van de woestijn.
25 David hoorde ervan dat Saul weer met zijn mannen naar hem op zoek was. Hij vertrok van de berg in de Maon-woestijn. Saul hoorde dit en achtervolgde David daar. 26 Saul trok langs de ene kant van de berg, terwijl David aan de andere kant zat. Haastig trok David verder om aan Saul te ontsnappen. Maar toen Saul op het punt stond om David en zijn mannen te omsingelen en te grijpen, 27 kwam er een boodschapper naar Saul met het bericht: "Kom snel terug, want de Filistijnen zijn het land binnengevallen." 28 Toen staakte Saul de achtervolging van David en trok de Filistijnen tegemoet. 29 Daarom wordt die plaats Sela-Malekot (= 'Rots van ontsnapping') genoemd.

- 1 Samuël 23:6 De borsttas hoorde bij de kleding van de hogepriester. Met behulp van de twee stenen die daarin zaten vroeg de hogepriester God om raad. Lees Exodus 28:30. Hoe er precies mee gewerkt werd, is niet bekend. Dit was een voorwerp dat alleen door de hogepriester gebruikt mocht worden. De tas wordt beschreven in Exodus 28:15-29.

David Saves the City of Keilah
23 Now they told David, “Behold, the Philistines are fighting against (A)Keilah and are robbing the threshing floors.” 2 Therefore David (B)inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go and attack these Philistines?” And the Lord said to David, “Go and attack the Philistines and save Keilah.” 3 But David's men said to him, “Behold, we are afraid here in Judah; how much more then if we go to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?” 4 Then David (C)inquired of the Lord again. And the Lord answered him, “Arise, go down to Keilah, (D)for I will give the Philistines into your hand.” 5 And David and his men went to Keilah and fought with the Philistines and brought away their livestock and struck them with a great blow. So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah.
6 (E)When Abiathar the son of Ahimelech had fled to David to Keilah, he had come down with an ephod in his hand. 7 Now it was told Saul that David had come to Keilah. And Saul said, “God has given him into my hand, for he has shut himself in by entering a town that has gates and bars.” 8 And Saul summoned all the people to war, to go down to Keilah, to besiege David and his men. 9 David knew that Saul was plotting harm against him. And he said to Abiathar the priest, (F)“Bring the ephod here.” 10 Then David said, “O Lord, the God of Israel, your servant has surely heard that Saul seeks to come to Keilah, to destroy the city on my account. 11 Will the men of Keilah surrender me into his hand? Will Saul come down, as your servant has heard? O Lord, the God of Israel, please tell your servant.” And the Lord said, “He will come down.” 12 Then David said, “Will the men of Keilah surrender me and my men into the hand of Saul?” And the Lord said, (G)“They will surrender you.” 13 Then David and his men, (H)who were about six hundred, arose and departed from Keilah, and they went (I)wherever they could go. When Saul was told that David had escaped from Keilah, he gave up the expedition. 14 And David remained in the strongholds in the wilderness, in the hill country (J)of the wilderness of (K)Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, but God did not give him into his hand.
Saul Pursues David
15 David saw that Saul had come out to seek his life. David was in the wilderness of Ziph at Horesh. 16 And Jonathan, Saul's son, rose and went to David at Horesh, and strengthened his hand in God. 17 And he said to him, “Do not fear, for the hand of Saul my father shall not find you. You shall be king over Israel, and I shall be next to you. (L)Saul my father also knows this.” 18 (M)And the two of them made a covenant before the Lord. David remained at Horesh, and Jonathan went home.
19 (N)Then the Ziphites went up to Saul at Gibeah, saying, “Is not David hiding among us in the strongholds at Horesh, on the hill of Hachilah, which is south of (O)Jeshimon? 20 Now come down, O king, according to all your heart's desire to come down, (P)and our part shall be to surrender him into the king's hand.” 21 And Saul said, (Q)“May you be blessed by the Lord, (R)for you have had compassion on me. 22 Go, make yet more sure. Know and see the place where his foot is, and who has seen him there, for it is told me that he is very cunning. 23 See therefore and take note of all the lurking places where he hides, and come back to me with sure information. Then I will go with you. And if he is in the land, I will search him out among all the thousands of Judah.” 24 And they arose and went to Ziph ahead of Saul.
Now David and his men were (S)in the wilderness of Maon, (T)in the Arabah to the south of (U)Jeshimon. 25 And Saul and his men went to seek him. And David was told, so he went down to the rock and lived in the wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard that, he pursued after David in the wilderness of Maon. 26 Saul went on one side of the mountain, and David and his men on the other side of the mountain. And David was hurrying to get away from Saul. As Saul and his men were closing in on David and his men to capture them, 27 a messenger came to Saul, saying, “Hurry and come, for the Philistines have made a raid against the land.” 28 So Saul returned from pursuing after David and went against the Philistines. Therefore that place was called the Rock of Escape.[a] 29 [b] And David went up from there and lived in the strongholds of (V)Engedi.
