Samuël, dienaar van God
2 Daarna zong Hanna een loflied voor de Here:
‘Wat heeft de Here mij blij gemaakt! Wat een kracht heeft Hij mij gegeven! Nu kan ik vrijuit tegen mijn vijanden spreken, want de Here heeft mij verlost. Wat een vreugde!
2 Niemand is zo heilig als de Here! Er is geen andere God, geen andere Rots dan onze God.
3 Wees niet langer trots en zelfingenomen! De Here weet wat u hebt gedaan en zal uw daden beoordelen.
4 Zij die machtig waren, zijn het nu niet meer! Zij die zwak waren, zijn nu sterk.
5 Die het goed hadden, lijden nu honger. Die honger leden, zijn nu goed doorvoed. De onvruchtbare vrouw heeft nu zeven kinderen, zij die vele kinderen heeft, kan nu niet meer baren.
6 De Here doodt en Hij maakt levend. Hij laat de mens neerdalen in het dodenrijk en leidt hem daar ook weer uit.
7 Sommigen geeft Hij armoede, anderen rijkdom. De één vernedert Hij, de ander wordt verhoogd.
8 Hij helpt zwakken en armen overeind, hij haalt hen weg uit stof en slijk. Hij behandelt hen als vorsten en geeft hun eer en aanzien. Want de hele aarde is door de Here geschapen en Hij houdt de wereld in zijn hand.
9 Hij zal hen die Hem aanbidden beschermen, maar de goddelozen komen in duisternis om. Niemand zal slagen door zijn eigen kracht alleen.
10 Zij die tegen de Here vechten, worden gebroken, vanuit de hemelen laat Hij tegen hen de donder weerklinken. Hij oordeelt over de hele aarde. Hij geeft zijn Koning kracht en aan zijn Gezalfde grote eer.’
11 Elkana ging zonder Samuël naar Rama terug, het kind werd een dienaar van de Here onder toezicht van de priester Eli.
12 De zonen van Eli waren slechte mannen die niets om de Here gaven, 13,14 en ze maakten misbruik van hun priesterrechten. Zo gebeurde het regelmatig dat zij hun dienaar eropuit stuurden wanneer iemand een offer bracht. Terwijl het vlees van het offerdier werd gekookt, stak de dienaar een driepuntige vleeshaak in de pot waarbij alles wat aan de haak omhoog kwam voor de zonen van Eli was. Alle Israëlieten die naar Silo kwamen om te aanbidden, werden op die manier behandeld. 15 Soms kwam de dienaar nog voordat het vet op het altaar in brand was gestoken en eiste het nog rauwe vlees op voordat het werd gekookt, zodat het kon worden geroosterd. 16 Als de man die het offer bracht, antwoordde: ‘Neem zoveel u wilt, maar eerst moet het vet worden verbrand, zoals de wet voorschrijft,’ dan zei de dienaar brutaalweg: ‘Nee, ik wil het nu hebben en als ik het niet goedschiks krijg, neem ik het kwaadschiks.’ 17 Zo zondigden de beide jongemannen ernstig in de ogen van de Here, want ze toonden geen eerbied voor de offers van het volk aan de Here.
18 Samuël, een kind nog, was een dienaar van de Here en droeg een linnen mantel, net als de priesters. 19 Elk jaar maakte zijn moeder een mantel voor hem en bracht hem die wanneer zij en haar man hun offer kwamen brengen. 20 Voordat zij weer naar huis gingen, zegende Eli Elkana en Hanna en vroeg God hun nog meer kinderen te geven, die de plaats konden innemen van het kind dat zij aan de Here hadden afgestaan. 21 En de Here gaf Hanna nog drie zonen en twee dochters. Ondertussen groeide Samuël dicht bij de Here op.
22 Ook al was Eli erg oud, toch wist hij heel goed wat zijn zonen het volk aandeden, zoals dat zij sliepen met de vrouwen die bij de ingang van de tabernakel dienst deden. 23-25 ‘Ik heb van het volk van de Here vreselijke verhalen gehoord over wat jullie doen,’ zei Eli tegen zijn zonen. ‘Het is iets vreselijks het volk van de Here te laten zondigen. Als mensen tegen elkaar zondigen, zal God hun scheidsrechter zijn. Maar als mensen zondigen tegen de Here, wie zal het dan voor hen opnemen?’ Maar zij luisterden niet naar hun vader, want de Here had Zich al voorgenomen hen te doden.
26 De jonge Samuël groeide op en was geliefd, zowel bij de Here als bij de mensen. 27 Op een dag kwam een profeet bij Eli en gaf hem de volgende boodschap van de Here: ‘Heb Ik mijn kracht niet duidelijk laten zien aan uw voorouders, toen zij slaven waren onder de farao in Egypte? 28 Heb Ik uw stamvader Levi niet uit al zijn broers gekozen om mijn priester te worden, te offeren op het altaar, reukwerk te verbranden en de priesterlijke mantel te dragen wanneer hij Mij diende? Heb Ik niet een deel van de offergeschenken van het volk toegewezen aan u, de priesters? 29 Waarom misbruikt u de offers die Mij worden gebracht? Waarom hebt u uw zonen meer geëerd dan Mij? Waarom hebt u zich volgegeten van de beste offers van mijn volk Israël die alleen Mij toekomen? 30 Daarom verklaar Ik, de Here, de God van Israël, dat ook al heb Ik beloofd dat uw familie altijd mijn priesters zouden blijven, u niet moet denken ongestoord met deze gruwelijke praktijken te kunnen doorgaan. Ik zal alleen eren wie Mij eren en Ik zal verachten wie Mij verachten. 31 Ieder van uw familieleden zal voortaan jong sterven, zodat zij niet langer als priester zullen dienen. Uw familie zal worden vernietigd. 32 Het zal Israël in alle opzichten goed gaan, maar u zult blijvende ellende ondervinden en in uw familie zal niemand oud worden. 33 Slechts één zal Ik bij mijn altaar toelaten en die zal al deze dingen met pijn moeten aanzien en van verdriet wegkwijnen. Alle leden van uw familie zullen in de kracht van hun leven sterven. 34 En om te bewijzen dat wat Ik heb gezegd zal gebeuren, zal Ik ervoor zorgen dat uw zonen Hofni en Pinechas op dezelfde dag sterven! 35 Daarna zal Ik een betrouwbare priester aanstellen die Mij zal dienen en alles zal doen wat Ik hem opdraag. Ik zal zijn familie zegenen en hij zal Mij altijd trouw blijven. 36 Al uw nakomelingen die nog overblijven, zullen zich diep voor hem buigen en hem smeken om brood en geld. “Alstublieft,” zullen zij zeggen, “geef mij toch een plaatsje bij de priesterdienst, zodat ik nog wat te eten krijg.” ’

Mon cœur se réjouit en l’Eternel,
Ma force a été relevée par l’Eternel;
Ma bouche s’est ouverte contre mes ennemis,
Car je me réjouis de ton secours.
2 Nul n’est saint comme l’Eternel;
Il n’y a point d’autre Dieu que toi;
Il n’y a point de rocher comme notre Dieu.
3 Ne parlez plus avec tant de hauteur;
Que l’arrogance ne sorte plus de votre bouche;
Car l’Eternel est un Dieu qui sait tout,
Et par lui sont pesées toutes les actions.
4 L’arc des puissants est brisé,
Et les faibles ont la force pour ceinture.
5 Ceux qui étaient rassasiés se louent pour du pain,
Et ceux qui étaient affamés se reposent;
Même la stérile enfante sept fois,
Et celle qui avait beaucoup d’enfants est flétrie.
6 L’Eternel fait mourir et il fait vivre,
Il fait descendre au séjour des morts et il en fait remonter.
7 L’Eternel appauvrit et il enrichit,
Il abaisse et il élève.
8 De la poussière il retire le pauvre,
Du fumier il relève l’indigent,
Pour les faire asseoir avec les grands.
Et il leur donne en partage un trône de gloire;
Car à l’Eternel sont les colonnes de la terre,
Et c’est sur elles qu’il a posé le monde.
9 Il gardera les pas de ses bien-aimés.
Mais les méchants seront réduits au silence dans les ténèbres;
Car l’homme ne triomphera point par la force.
10 Les ennemis de l’Eternel trembleront;
Du haut des cieux il lancera sur eux son tonnerre;
L’Eternel jugera les extrémités de la terre.
Il donnera la puissance à son roi,
Et il relèvera la force de son oint.
11 Elkana s’en alla dans sa maison à Rama, et l’enfant fut au service de l’Eternel devant le sacrificateur Eli.
Perversité et jugement des fils d’Eli
12 Les fils d’Eli étaient des hommes pervers, ils ne connaissaient point l’Eternel. 13 Et voici quelle était la manière d’agir de ces sacrificateurs à l’égard du peuple. Lorsque quelqu’un offrait un sacrifice, le serviteur du sacrificateur arrivait au moment où l’on faisait cuire la chair. Tenant à la main une fourchette à trois dents, 14 il piquait dans la chaudière, dans le chaudron, dans la marmite, ou dans le pot; et tout ce que la fourchette amenait, le sacrificateur le prenait pour lui. C’est ainsi qu’ils agissaient à l’égard de tous ceux d’Israël qui venaient là à Silo. 15 Même avant qu’on fasse brûler la graisse, le serviteur du sacrificateur arrivait et disait à celui qui offrait le sacrifice: Donne pour le sacrificateur de la chair à rôtir; il ne recevra de toi point de chair cuite, c’est de la chair crue qu’il veut. 16 Et si l’homme lui disait: Quand on aura brûlé la graisse, tu prendras ce qui te plaira, le serviteur répondait: Non! tu donneras maintenant, sinon je prends de force. 17 Ces jeunes gens se rendaient coupables devant l’Eternel d’un très grand péché, parce qu’ils méprisaient les offrandes de l’Eternel.
18 Samuel faisait le service devant l’Eternel, et cet enfant était revêtu d’un éphod de lin. 19 Sa mère lui faisait chaque année une petite robe, et la lui apportait en montant avec son mari pour offrir le sacrifice annuel. 20 Eli bénit Elkana et sa femme, en disant: Que l’Eternel te fasse avoir des enfants de cette femme, pour remplacer celui qu’elle a prêté à l’Eternel! Et ils s’en retournèrent chez eux. 21 Lorsque l’Eternel eut visité Anne, elle devint enceinte, et elle enfanta trois fils et deux filles. Et le jeune Samuel grandissait auprès de l’Eternel.
22 Eli était fort âgé et il apprit comment ses fils agissaient à l’égard de tout Israël; il apprit aussi qu’ils couchaient avec les femmes qui s’assemblaient à l’entrée de la tente d’assignation. 23 Il leur dit: Pourquoi faites-vous de telles choses? car j’apprends de tout le peuple vos mauvaises actions. 24 Non, mes enfants, ce que j’entends dire n’est pas bon; vous faites pécher le peuple de l’Eternel. 25 Si un homme pèche contre un autre homme, Dieu le jugera; mais s’il pèche contre l’Eternel, qui intercédera pour lui? Et ils n’écoutèrent point la voix de leur père, car l’Eternel voulait les faire mourir.
26 Le jeune Samuel continuait à grandir, et il était agréable à l’Eternel et aux hommes.
27 Un homme de Dieu vint auprès d’Eli, et lui dit: Ainsi parle l’Eternel: Ne me suis-je pas révélé à la maison de ton père, lorsqu’ils étaient en Egypte dans la maison de Pharaon? 28 Je l’ai choisie parmi toutes les tribus d’Israël pour être à mon service dans le sacerdoce, pour monter à mon autel, pour brûler le parfum, pour porter l’éphod devant moi, et j’ai donné à la maison de ton père tous les sacrifices consumés par le feu et offerts pour les enfants d’Israël. 29 Pourquoi foulez-vous aux pieds mes sacrifices et mes offrandes, que j’ai ordonné de faire dans ma demeure? Et d’où vient que tu honores tes fils plus que moi, afin de vous engraisser des prémices de toutes les offrandes d’Israël, mon peuple? 30 C’est pourquoi voici ce que dit l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Israël: J’avais déclaré que ta maison et la maison de ton père marcheraient devant moi à perpétuité. Et maintenant, dit l’Eternel, loin de moi! Car j’honorerai celui qui m’honore, mais ceux qui me méprisent seront méprisés. 31 Voici, le temps arrive où je retrancherai ton bras et le bras de la maison de ton père, en sorte qu’il n’y aura plus de vieillard dans ta maison. 32 Tu verras un adversaire dans ma demeure, tandis qu’Israël sera comblé de biens par l’Eternel; et il n’y aura plus jamais de vieillard dans ta maison. 33 Je laisserai subsister auprès de mon autel l’un des tiens, afin de consumer tes yeux et d’attrister ton âme; mais tous ceux de ta maison mourront dans la force de l’âge. 34 Et tu auras pour signe ce qui arrivera à tes deux fils, Hophni et Phinées: ils mourront tous les deux le même jour. 35 Je m’établirai un sacrificateur fidèle, qui agira selon mon cœur et selon mon âme; je lui bâtirai une maison stable, et il marchera toujours devant mon oint. 36 Et quiconque restera de ta maison viendra se prosterner devant lui pour avoir une pièce d’argent et un morceau de pain, et dira: Attache-moi, je te prie, à l’une des fonctions du sacerdoce, afin que j’aie un morceau de pain à manger.

Hannah’s Prayer
2 Then Hannah prayed and said:(A)
“My heart rejoices(B) in the Lord;
in the Lord my horn[a](C) is lifted high.
My mouth boasts(D) over my enemies,(E)
for I delight in your deliverance.
2 “There is no one holy(F) like(G) the Lord;
there is no one besides you;
there is no Rock(H) like our God.
3 “Do not keep talking so proudly
or let your mouth speak such arrogance,(I)
for the Lord is a God who knows,(J)
and by him deeds(K) are weighed.(L)
4 “The bows of the warriors are broken,(M)
but those who stumbled are armed with strength.(N)
5 Those who were full hire themselves out for food,
but those who were hungry(O) are hungry no more.
She who was barren(P) has borne seven children,
but she who has had many sons pines away.
6 “The Lord brings death and makes alive;(Q)
he brings down to the grave and raises up.(R)
7 The Lord sends poverty and wealth;(S)
he humbles and he exalts.(T)
8 He raises(U) the poor(V) from the dust(W)
and lifts the needy(X) from the ash heap;
he seats them with princes
and has them inherit a throne of honor.(Y)
“For the foundations(Z) of the earth are the Lord’s;
on them he has set the world.
9 He will guard the feet(AA) of his faithful servants,(AB)
but the wicked will be silenced in the place of darkness.(AC)
“It is not by strength(AD) that one prevails;
10 those who oppose the Lord will be broken.(AE)
The Most High will thunder(AF) from heaven;
the Lord will judge(AG) the ends of the earth.
11 Then Elkanah went home to Ramah,(AJ) but the boy ministered(AK) before the Lord under Eli the priest.
Eli’s Wicked Sons
12 Eli’s sons were scoundrels; they had no regard(AL) for the Lord. 13 Now it was the practice(AM) of the priests that, whenever any of the people offered a sacrifice, the priest’s servant would come with a three-pronged fork in his hand while the meat(AN) was being boiled 14 and would plunge the fork into the pan or kettle or caldron or pot. Whatever the fork brought up the priest would take for himself. This is how they treated all the Israelites who came to Shiloh. 15 But even before the fat was burned, the priest’s servant would come and say to the person who was sacrificing, “Give the priest some meat to roast; he won’t accept boiled meat from you, but only raw.”
16 If the person said to him, “Let the fat(AO) be burned first, and then take whatever you want,” the servant would answer, “No, hand it over now; if you don’t, I’ll take it by force.”
17 This sin of the young men was very great in the Lord’s sight, for they[b] were treating the Lord’s offering with contempt.(AP)
18 But Samuel was ministering(AQ) before the Lord—a boy wearing a linen ephod.(AR) 19 Each year his mother made him a little robe and took it to him when she went up with her husband to offer the annual(AS) sacrifice. 20 Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, saying, “May the Lord give you children by this woman to take the place of the one she prayed(AT) for and gave to[c] the Lord.” Then they would go home. 21 And the Lord was gracious to Hannah;(AU) she gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew(AV) up in the presence of the Lord.
22 Now Eli, who was very old, heard about everything(AW) his sons were doing to all Israel and how they slept with the women(AX) who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 23 So he said to them, “Why do you do such things? I hear from all the people about these wicked deeds of yours. 24 No, my sons; the report I hear spreading among the Lord’s people is not good. 25 If one person sins against another, God[d] may mediate for the offender; but if anyone sins against the Lord, who will(AY) intercede(AZ) for them?” His sons, however, did not listen to their father’s rebuke, for it was the Lord’s will to put them to death.
26 And the boy Samuel continued to grow(BA) in stature and in favor with the Lord and with people.(BB)
Prophecy Against the House of Eli
27 Now a man of God(BC) came to Eli and said to him, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Did I not clearly reveal myself to your ancestor’s family when they were in Egypt under Pharaoh? 28 I chose(BD) your ancestor out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense,(BE) and to wear an ephod(BF) in my presence. I also gave your ancestor’s family all the food offerings(BG) presented by the Israelites. 29 Why do you[e] scorn my sacrifice and offering(BH) that I prescribed for my dwelling?(BI) Why do you honor your sons more than me by fattening yourselves on the choice parts of every offering made by my people Israel?’
30 “Therefore the Lord, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I promised that members of your family would minister before me forever.(BJ)’ But now the Lord declares: ‘Far be it from me! Those who honor me I will honor,(BK) but those who despise(BL) me will be disdained.(BM) 31 The time is coming when I will cut short your strength and the strength of your priestly house, so that no one in it will reach old age,(BN) 32 and you will see distress(BO) in my dwelling. Although good will be done to Israel, no one in your family line will ever reach old age.(BP) 33 Every one of you that I do not cut off from serving at my altar I will spare only to destroy your sight and sap your strength, and all your descendants(BQ) will die in the prime of life.
34 “‘And what happens to your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, will be a sign(BR) to you—they will both die(BS) on the same day.(BT) 35 I will raise up for myself a faithful priest,(BU) who will do according to what is in my heart and mind. I will firmly establish his priestly house, and they will minister before my anointed(BV) one always. 36 Then everyone left in your family line will come and bow down before him for a piece of silver and a loaf of bread and plead,(BW) “Appoint me to some priestly office so I can have food to eat.(BX)”’”

The Prayer of Hannah
2 Hannah prayed, saying:
“My heart rejoices in the Lord;
my horn is exalted in the Lord.
My mouth is bold against my enemies,
because I rejoice in Your salvation.
2 “There is none holy as the Lord,
for there is none besides You,
and there is no rock like our God.
3 “Do not multiply proud speech,
nor let arrogance come out of your mouth,
for the Lord is the God of knowledge,
and by Him actions are examined.
4 “The bows of the mighty are broken,
but those who stumbled are girded with strength.
5 Those that were full have hired out themselves for bread,
and those that were hungry ceased to hunger.
Even the barren has borne seven,
and she that has many children wastes away.
6 “The Lord kills and makes alive;
He brings down to the grave and brings up.
7 The Lord makes poor and makes rich;
He brings low and lifts up.
8 He raises up the poor out of the dust
and lifts up the oppressed from the dunghill
to make them sit with princes
and inherit a throne of glory.
“For the pillars of the earth belong to the Lord,
and He has set the world upon them.
9 He will guard the feet of His saints,
but the wicked will be silent in darkness.
“For by strength shall no man prevail.
10 The adversaries of the Lord will be broken to pieces;
He will thunder against them out of heaven.
The Lord will judge the ends of the earth.
“He will give strength to His king
and exalt the horn of His anointed.”
11 Then Elkanah went to Ramah to his house. And the boy ministered to the Lord before Eli the priest.
Wicked Sons of Eli
12 Now the sons of Eli were corrupt. They did not know the Lord. 13 The priest’s custom with the people was that when any man offered a sacrifice, the priest’s servant came while the flesh was cooking with a three-pronged fork in his hand. 14 And he struck it into the pan, or kettle, or cauldron, or pot, and all that the fork brought up the priest took for himself. This they did in Shiloh to all the children of Israel who came there. 15 Even before they burned the fat, the priest’s servant would come and say to the man sacrificing, “Give meat for the priest to roast. For he will not take boiled meat from you, but only raw.”
16 If any man said to him, “Let them first burn the fat and then take as much as you wish,” then he would answer him, “No, but you will give it to me now, and if not, I will take it by force.”
17 Therefore the sin of the young men was very great before the Lord. For the men treated the offering of the Lord with contempt.
God Blesses Hannah
18 But Samuel ministered before the Lord, as a boy, wearing a linen ephod. 19 Now his mother would make him a little coat and brought it to him every year when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. 20 And Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife and say, “The Lord give you offspring from this woman for the sake of the request which was made to the Lord.” Then they would return to their home. 21 The Lord visited Hannah, so that she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. And the boy Samuel grew before the Lord.
Eli Confronts Hophni and Phinehas
22 Now Eli was very old, and he heard all that his sons were doing to all Israel, even that they lay with the women who served at the doorway of the tent of meeting. 23 He said to them, “Why are you doing these things? For I am hearing of your evil dealings from all these people. 24 No, my sons! Truly, it is not a good report that I hear the people of the Lord spreading. 25 If one man sins against another, God will judge him, but if a man sins against the Lord, who will intercede for him?” But they did not listen to the voice of their father, because the Lord desired to kill them.
26 Now the boy Samuel was growing both in stature and favor with the Lord and also with men.
God’s Case Against the House of Eli
27 A man of God came to Eli and said to him, “Thus says the Lord, ‘Did I not plainly reveal Myself to the house of your father, when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh’s house? 28 And choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be My priest, to offer upon My altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before Me? And I gave to the house of your father all the offerings made by fire by the children of Israel? 29 Why do you kick at My sacrifice and at My offering, which I have commanded in My dwelling, and honor your sons above Me, to make yourselves fat with the best of all the offerings of Israel My people?’
30 “Therefore the Lord God of Israel says, ‘I surely said that your house, and the house of your father, should walk before Me forever,’ but now the Lord says, ‘Far be it from Me to do so, for those who honor Me, I will honor, and those that despise Me will be humbled. 31 The days are coming when I will cut off your authority and the strength of your father’s house, so there shall not be an old man in your house. 32 You shall see the distress of My dwelling, despite all the good which will be done for Israel. And there shall not be an elderly man in your house perpetually. 33 Yet the one I do not cut off from My altar will be spared so your eyes will not stop weeping or your soul grieving. All the increase of your house will die in their prime.
34 “ ‘This will be the sign to you which will come upon your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas: In one day, they will both die. 35 And I will raise up for Myself a faithful priest; what is in My heart and in My soul he will do it. And I will build him a sure house, and it will walk before My anointed forever. 36 But it will be that everyone who is left in your house will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread, and will say, Please attach me to one of the priestly offices, that I may eat a piece of bread.’ ”
