⁶ So they gathered together at Mizpah, ^(A)drew water, and poured it out before the Lord. And they ^(B)fasted that day, and said there, ^(C)“We have sinned against the Lord.” And Samuel judged the children of Israel at Mizpah.

²⁷ So it was, when Ahab heard those words, that he tore his clothes and ^(A)put sackcloth on his body, and fasted and lay in sackcloth, and went about mourning.

²⁸ And the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, ²⁹ “See how Ahab has humbled himself before Me? Because he ^(B)has humbled himself before Me, I will not bring the calamity in his days. ^(C)In the days of his son I will bring the calamity on his house.”

The People Confess Their Sins

9 Now on the twenty-fourth day of ^(A)this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, in sackcloth, ^(B)and with ^[a]dust on their heads.

The People of Nineveh Believe

⁵ So the ^(A)people of Nineveh believed God, proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them. ⁶ Then word came to the king of Nineveh; and he arose from his throne and laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth ^(B)and sat in ashes. ^7 (C)And he caused it to be proclaimed and published throughout Nineveh by the decree of the king and his ^[a]nobles, saying,
