¹⁰ They put his armor in the temple of the Ashtoreths^(A) and fastened his body to the wall of Beth Shan.^(B)

¹³ because they forsook^(A) him and served Baal and the Ashtoreths.^(B)

⁹ The priest replied, “The sword^(A) of Goliath^(B) the Philistine, whom you killed in the Valley of Elah,^(C) is here; it is wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. If you want it, take it; there is no sword here but that one.”

David said, “There is none like it; give it to me.”

¹² he went and took the bones of Saul^(A) and his son Jonathan from the citizens of Jabesh Gilead.^(B) (They had stolen their bodies from the public square at Beth Shan,^(C) where the Philistines had hung^(D) them after they struck Saul down on Gilboa.)^{(E) 13} David brought the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan from there, and the bones of those who had been killed and exposed were gathered up.

¹⁴ They buried the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan in the tomb of Saul’s father Kish, at Zela^(F) in Benjamin, and did everything the king commanded. After that,^(G) God answered prayer^(H) in behalf of the land.^(I)

³ So Samuel said to all the Israelites, “If you are returning^(A) to the Lord with all your hearts, then rid^(B) yourselves of the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths^(C) and commit^(D) yourselves to the Lord and serve him only,^(E) and he will deliver^(F) you out of the hand of the Philistines.”

²⁷ But Manasseh did not^(A) drive out the people of Beth Shan or Taanach or Dor^(B) or Ibleam^(C) or Megiddo^(D) and their surrounding settlements, for the Canaanites^(E) were determined to live in that land.
