¹⁰ But Saul swore to her by the Lord, ^(A)“As the Lord lives, no punishment shall come upon you for this thing.”

¹¹ Then she said, “Please let the king invoke the Lord your God, that ^(A)the avenger of blood kill no more, and my son be not destroyed.” He said, ^(B)“As the Lord lives, ^(C)not one hair of your son shall fall to the ground.”

²³ And he vowed to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give you, ^(A)up to half of my kingdom.”

⁷² And again he denied it with an oath: “I do not know the man.”

⁶ And Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan. Saul swore, ^(A)“As the Lord lives, he shall not be put to death.”

³⁹ For ^(A)as the Lord lives who saves Israel, ^(B)though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die.” But there was not a man among all the people who answered him.

¹⁰ There shall not be found among you anyone ^(A)who burns his son or his daughter as an offering,^[a] anyone who ^(B)practices divination or ^(C)tells fortunes or interprets omens, or ^(D)a sorcerer ¹¹ or a charmer or ^(E)a medium or a necromancer or ^(F)one who inquires of the dead, ^12 (G)for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord. And ^(H)because of these abominations the Lord your God is driving them out before you.

^7 (A)“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

⁵ For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
