⁶ He said to his men, ^(A)“The Lord forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, the Lord's anointed, to put out my hand against him, seeing he is ^(B)the Lord's anointed.”

¹⁵ See that ^(A)no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always ^(B)seek to do good to one another and to everyone.

^14 (A)Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. ^15 (B)Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. ^16 (C)Live in harmony with one another. ^(D)Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly.^{[a] (E)}Never be wise in your own sight. ^17 (F)Repay no one evil for evil, but ^(G)give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. ¹⁸ If possible, so far as it depends on you, ^(H)live peaceably with all. ¹⁹ Beloved, ^(I)never avenge yourselves, but leave it^[b] to the wrath of God, for it is written, ^(J)“Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” ²⁰ To the contrary, ^(K)“if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” ²¹ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Submission to the Authorities

13 Let every person ^(L)be subject to the governing authorities. For ^(M)there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. ² Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.

⁴⁴ But I say to you, ^(A)Love your enemies and ^(B)pray for those who persecute you,

³ But Naboth said to Ahab, “The Lord forbid ^(A)that I should give you the inheritance of my fathers.”

¹⁴ David said to him, “How is it you were not ^(A)afraid to put out your hand to destroy ^(B)the Lord's anointed?”

⁹ But David said to Abishai, “Do not destroy him, for who can put out his hand ^(A)against the Lord's anointed and be guiltless?” ¹⁰ And David said, ^(B)“As the Lord lives, ^(C)the Lord will strike him, or ^(D)his day will come to die, ^(E)or he will go down into battle and perish. ^11 (F)The Lord forbid that I should put out my hand against the Lord's anointed. But take now the spear that is ^(G)at his head and the jar of water, and let us go.”
