¹⁸ The king then ordered Doeg, “You turn and strike down the priests.”^(A) So Doeg the Edomite turned and struck them down. That day he killed eighty-five men who wore the linen ephod.^(B)

¹⁰ And that is just what I did in Jerusalem. On the authority of the chief priests I put many of the Lord’s people^(A) in prison,^(B) and when they were put to death, I cast my vote against them.^{(C) 11} Many a time I went from one synagogue to another to have them punished,^(D) and I tried to force them to blaspheme. I was so obsessed with persecuting them that I even hunted them down in foreign cities.

²¹ But they plotted against him, and by order of the king they stoned^(A) him to death^(B) in the courtyard of the Lord’s temple.^(C)

¹² At that time I will carry out against Eli everything^(A) I spoke against his family—from beginning to end. ¹³ For I told him that I would judge his family forever because of the sin he knew about; his sons blasphemed God,^[a] and he failed to restrain^(B) them. ¹⁴ Therefore I swore to the house of Eli, ‘The guilt of Eli’s house will never be atoned^(C) for by sacrifice or offering.’”

³⁶ Then everyone left in your family line will come and bow down before him for a piece of silver and a loaf of bread and plead,^(A) “Appoint me to some priestly office so I can have food to eat.^(B)”’”
