^6 (A)If your father misses me at all, then say, ‘David earnestly asked leave of me to run ^(B)to Bethlehem his city, for there is a yearly ^(C)sacrifice there for all the clan.’

⁵⁸ And Saul said to him, “Whose son are you, young man?” And David answered, ^(A)“I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.”

¹² They answered, “He is; behold, he is just ahead of you. Hurry. He has come just now to the city, because the people ^(A)have a sacrifice today on ^(B)the high place.

⁴² Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes ^(A)from the offspring of David, and comes ^(B)from Bethlehem, the village ^(C)where David was?”

² And Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.” And the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ^(A)‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ ³ And invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do. ^(B)And you shall anoint for me him whom I declare to you.” ⁴ Samuel did what the Lord commanded and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city ^(C)came to meet him trembling and said, ^(D)“Do you come peaceably?” ⁵ And he said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. ^(E)Consecrate yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” And he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.

⁵ But you shall seek ^(A)the place that the Lord your God will choose out of all your tribes to put his name and make his habitation^[a] there. There you shall go,
