² “Never!” Jonathan replied. “You are not going to die! Look, my father doesn’t do anything, great or small, without letting me know. Why would he hide this from me? It isn’t so!”

¹⁵ Now the day before Saul came, the Lord had revealed this to Samuel:

¹² Then Jonathan said to David, “I swear by the Lord, the God of Israel, that I will surely sound^(A) out my father by this time the day after tomorrow! If he is favorably disposed toward you, will I not send you word and let you know?

⁴⁵ But the men said to Saul, “Should Jonathan die—he who has brought about this great deliverance in Israel? Never! As surely as the Lord lives, not a hair^(A) of his head will fall to the ground, for he did this today with God’s help.” So the men rescued^(B) Jonathan, and he was not put to death.

²⁹ “Far be it from us to rebel^(A) against the Lord and turn away from him today by building an altar for burnt offerings, grain offerings and sacrifices, other than the altar of the Lord our God that stands before his tabernacle.^(B)”

⁷ But they said to him, “Why does my lord say such things? Far be it from your servants^(A) to do anything like that!^(B)

¹⁵ I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.^(A)

¹⁶ He will come and kill those tenants^(A) and give the vineyard to others.”

When the people heard this, they said, “God forbid!”
