² And he said to him, “Far from it! You shall not die. Behold, my father does nothing either great or small without disclosing it to me. And why should my father hide this from me? It is not so.”

⁸ For I have given them ^(A)the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that ^(B)I came from you; and ^(C)they have believed that you sent me.

¹⁵ Now the day before Saul came, ^(A)the Lord had ^(B)revealed to Samuel:

¹² And Jonathan said to David, “The Lord, the God of Israel, be witness!^[a] When I have sounded out my father, about this time tomorrow, or the third day, behold, if he is well disposed toward David, shall I not then send and disclose it to you?

⁴⁵ Then the people said to Saul, “Shall Jonathan die, who has worked this great salvation in Israel? Far from it! ^(A)As the Lord lives, ^(B)there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground, for he has worked with God this day.” So the people ransomed Jonathan, so that he did not die.

²⁹ Far be it from us that we should ^(A)rebel against the Lord and turn away this day from following the Lord ^(B)by building an altar for burnt offering, grain offering, or sacrifice, other than the altar of the Lord our God that stands before his tabernacle!”

⁷ They said to him, “Why does my lord speak such words as these? Far be it from your servants to do such a thing!

^15 (A)No longer do I call you servants,^[a] for the servant ^(B)does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for ^(C)all that I have heard from my Father ^(D)I have made known to you.

^16 (A)He will ^(B)come and destroy those tenants and ^(C)give the vineyard to others.” When they heard this, they said, “Surely not!”
