¹⁶ So Jonathan made a covenant with the ^[a]house of David, saying, ^(A)“Let the Lord require it at the hand of David’s enemies.”

^22 (A)May God do so, and more also, to the enemies of David, if I ^(B)leave ^(C)one male of all who belong to him by morning light.”

³ Then Jonathan and David made a ^(A)covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.

⁸ So the king took Armoni and Mephibosheth, the two sons of ^(A)Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, whom she bore to Saul, and the five sons of ^[a]Michal the daughter of Saul, whom she ^[b]brought up for Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite;

⁷ For when they came into the house, he was lying on his bed in his bedroom; then they struck him and killed him, beheaded him and took his head, and were all night escaping through the plain. ⁸ And they brought the head of Ishbosheth to David at Hebron, and said to the king, “Here is the head of Ishbosheth, the son of Saul your enemy, ^(A)who sought your life; and the Lord has avenged my lord the king this day of Saul and his descendants.”

² Then the Philistines followed hard after Saul and his sons. And the Philistines killed ^(A)Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua, Saul’s sons.

¹⁸ On the same day the Lord ^(A)made a covenant with Abram, saying:
