¹⁶ So Jonathan^(A) made a covenant^(B) with the house of David, saying, “May the Lord call David’s enemies to account.^(C)”

²² May God deal with David,^[a] be it ever so severely,^(A) if by morning I leave alive one male^(B) of all who belong to him!”

³ And Jonathan made a covenant^(A) with David because he loved him as himself.

⁸ But the king took Armoni and Mephibosheth, the two sons of Aiah’s daughter Rizpah,^(A) whom she had borne to Saul, together with the five sons of Saul’s daughter Merab,^[a] whom she had borne to Adriel son of Barzillai the Meholathite.^(B)

⁷ They had gone into the house while he was lying on the bed in his bedroom. After they stabbed and killed him, they cut off his head. Taking it with them, they traveled all night by way of the Arabah.^{(A) 8} They brought the head^(B) of Ish-Bosheth to David at Hebron and said to the king, “Here is the head of Ish-Bosheth son of Saul,^(C) your enemy, who tried to kill you. This day the Lord has avenged^(D) my lord the king against Saul and his offspring.”

² The Philistines were in hot pursuit of Saul and his sons,^(A) and they killed his sons Jonathan,^(B) Abinadab and Malki-Shua.^(C)

¹⁸ On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram^(A) and said, “To your descendants I give this land,^(B) from the Wadi^[a] of Egypt^(C) to the great river, the Euphrates^(D)—
