³³ The only one of you whom I shall not cut off from my altar shall be spared to weep his^[a] eyes out to grieve his heart, and all the descendants^[b] of your house shall die by the sword of men.^[c]

²⁶ And to Abiathar the priest the king said, “Go to ^(A)Anathoth, to your estate, for you deserve death. But I will not at this time put you to death, ^(B)because you carried the ark of the Lord God before David my father, ^(C)and because you shared in all my father's affliction.” ^27 (D)So Solomon expelled Abiathar from being priest to the Lord, thus fulfilling ^(E)the word of the Lord that he had spoken concerning the house of Eli in Shiloh.

^19 (A)He has sacrificed oxen, fattened cattle, and sheep in abundance, and has invited all the sons of the king, ^(B)Abiathar the priest, and Joab the commander of the army, but ^(C)Solomon your servant he has not invited.

⁷ He conferred with ^(A)Joab the son of Zeruiah and with ^(B)Abiathar the priest. And they followed Adonijah and helped him.

²¹ And Abiathar told David that Saul had killed the priests of the Lord. ²² And David said to Abiathar, “I knew on that day, ^(A)when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul. I have occasioned the death of all the persons of your father's house. ^23 (B)Stay with me; do not be afraid, for he who seeks my life seeks your life. With me you shall be in safekeeping.”

Herod Kills the Children

¹⁶ Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men. ^17 (A)Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah:
