² And Jonathan told David, “Saul my father seeks to kill you. Therefore be on your guard in the morning. Stay in a secret place and hide yourself.

²⁴ but their ^(A)plot became known to Saul. ^(B)They were watching the gates day and night in order to kill him,

¹² We should not be like ^(A)Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? ^(B)Because his own deeds were evil and his brother's righteous. ¹³ Do not be surprised, brothers,^{[a] (C)}that the world hates you. ¹⁴ We know that ^(D)we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death.

¹⁶ Now the son of Paul's sister heard of their ambush, so he went and entered ^(A)the barracks and told Paul.

² And he said to him, “Far from it! You shall not die. Behold, my father does nothing either great or small without disclosing it to me. And why should my father hide this from me? It is not so.”

David and Jonathan's Friendship

18 As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan ^(A)loved him as his own soul. ² And Saul took him that day ^(B)and would not let him return to his father's house. ³ Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because ^(C)he loved him as his own soul.

¹⁷ These things I command you, ^(A)so that you will love one another.

The Hatred of the World

^18 (B)“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. ^19 (C)If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because ^(D)you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
