² and warned him, “My father Saul is looking for a chance to kill you. Be on your guard tomorrow morning; go into hiding^(A) and stay there.

²⁴ but Saul learned of their plan.^(A) Day and night they kept close watch on the city gates in order to kill him.

¹² Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one^(A) and murdered his brother.^(B) And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous.^{(C) 13} Do not be surprised, my brothers and sisters,^[a] if the world hates you.^{(D) 14} We know that we have passed from death to life,^(E) because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death.^(F)

¹⁶ But when the son of Paul’s sister heard of this plot, he went into the barracks^(A) and told Paul.

¹⁷ This is my command: Love each other.^(A)

The World Hates the Disciples

¹⁸ “If the world hates you,^(B) keep in mind that it hated me first. ¹⁹ If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you^(C) out of the world. That is why the world hates you.^(D)

² “Never!” Jonathan replied. “You are not going to die! Look, my father doesn’t do anything, great or small, without letting me know. Why would he hide this from me? It isn’t so!”

Saul’s Growing Fear of David

18 After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan^(A) became one in spirit with David, and he loved^(B) him as himself.^{(C) 2} From that day Saul kept David with him and did not let him return home to his family. ³ And Jonathan made a covenant^(D) with David because he loved him as himself.
