⁸ And Saul was very angry, and this saying displeased him. He said, “They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed thousands, and what more can he have but ^(A)the kingdom?”

²⁸ And Samuel said to him, ^(A)“The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you this day and has given it to a neighbor of yours, who is better than you.

⁵ Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit ^(A)that he has made to dwell in us”?

⁵ And when Haman saw that ^(A)Mordecai did not bow down or pay homage to him, Haman was ^(B)filled with fury.

³¹ For as long as the son of Jesse lives on the earth, neither you nor your kingdom shall be established. Therefore send and bring him to me, for he shall surely die.”

⁴ Then I saw that all toil and all skill in work come from a man's envy of his neighbor. This also is ^(A)vanity^[a] and a striving after wind.

²² King Solomon answered his mother, “And why do you ask ^(A)Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? Ask for him the kingdom also, ^(B)for he is my older brother, and on his side ^(C)are Abiathar^[a] the priest and Joab the son of Zeruiah.”

¹³ Then Samuel took ^(A)the horn of oil ^(B)and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. ^(C)And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.
