⁸ Then Saul was very angry, and the saying ^(A)displeased him; and he said, “They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed only thousands. Now what more can he have but ^(B)the kingdom?”

²⁸ So Samuel said to him, ^(A)“The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today, and has given it to a neighbor of yours, who is better than you.

⁵ When Haman saw that Mordecai ^(A)did not bow or pay him homage, Haman was ^(B)filled with wrath.

³¹ For as long as the son of Jesse lives on the earth, you shall not be established, nor your kingdom. Now therefore, send and bring him to me, for he ^[a]shall surely die.”

⁵ Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, ^(A)“The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously”?

The Vanity of Selfish Toil

⁴ Again, I saw that for all toil and every skillful work a man is envied by his neighbor. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind.

²² And King Solomon answered and said to his mother, “Now why do you ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? Ask for him the kingdom also—for he is my ^(A)older brother—for him, and for ^(B)Abiathar the priest, and for Joab the son of Zeruiah.”

¹³ Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and ^(A)the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel arose and went to Ramah.
