¹³ Therefore Saul removed him from ^[a]his presence, and made him his captain over a thousand; and ^(A)he went out and came in before the people.

² Also, in time past, when Saul was king over us, ^(A)you were the one who led Israel out and brought them in; and the Lord said to you, ^(B)‘You shall shepherd My people Israel, and be ruler over Israel.’ ”

⁷ then Saul said to his servants who stood about him, “Hear now, you Benjamites! Will the son of Jesse ^(A)give every one of you fields and vineyards, and make you all captains of thousands and captains of hundreds?

²⁵ Then Saul said, “Thus you shall say to David: ‘The king does not desire any ^(A)dowry but one hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to take ^(B)vengeance on the king’s enemies.’ ” But Saul ^(C)thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.

¹⁶ But ^(A)all Israel and Judah loved David, because he went out and came in before them.

¹⁷ Then Saul said to David, “Here is my older daughter Merab; ^(B)I will give her to you as a wife. Only be valiant for me, and fight ^(C)the Lord’s battles.” For Saul thought, ^(D)“Let my hand not be against him, but let the hand of the Philistines be against him.”

¹² He will ^(A)appoint captains over his thousands and captains over his fifties, will set some to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and some to make his weapons of war and equipment for his chariots.

¹⁶ “Let the Lord, ^(A)the God of the spirits of all flesh, set a man over the congregation, ^17 (B)who may go out before them and go in before them, who may lead them out and bring them in, that the congregation of the Lord may not be ^(C)like sheep which have no shepherd.”
