³⁶ Your servant has struck down both lions and bears, and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, ^(A)for he has defied the armies of the living God.”

¹⁰ And the Philistine said, ^(A)“I defy the ranks of Israel this day. Give me a man, that we may fight together.”

²⁸ For ^(A)no one is a Jew ^(B)who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical. ²⁹ But a Jew is one ^(C)inwardly, and ^(D)circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter. ^(E)His praise is not from man but from God.

²² And the people were shouting, “The voice of a god, and not of a man!” ²³ Immediately ^(A)an angel of the Lord struck him down, because ^(B)he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and breathed his last.

12 About that time Herod the king laid violent hands on some who belonged to the church. ² He killed ^(A)James the brother of John ^(B)with the sword,

³⁸ So in the present case I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone, for ^(A)if this plan or this undertaking is of man, it will fail; ³⁹ but ^(B)if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You ^(C)might even be found opposing God!” So they took his advice,

^3 (A)On that day I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples. ^(B)All who lift it will surely hurt themselves. And ^(C)all the nations of the earth will gather against it.

⁸ For thus said the Lord of hosts, after his glory sent me^[a] to the nations who plundered you, ^(A)for he who touches you touches ^(B)the apple of his eye:

²⁷ And ^(A)they do not lie with the mighty, the fallen from among the uncircumcised, who went down to Sheol with their weapons of war, whose swords were laid under their heads, and whose iniquities are upon their bones; for the terror of the mighty men was in the land of the living. ²⁸ But as for you, you shall be broken ^(B)and lie among the uncircumcised, with those who are slain by the sword.

^29 (C)“Edom is ^(D)there, her kings and all her princes, who for all their might are laid with those who are killed by the sword; they lie with the uncircumcised, with those who go down to the pit.

³⁰ “The princes ^(E)of the north are there, all of them, and all the ^(F)Sidonians, who have gone down in shame with the slain, ^(G)for all the terror that they caused by their might; they lie uncircumcised with those who are slain by the sword, and ^(H)bear their shame with those who go down to the pit.

³¹ “When Pharaoh sees them, he ^(I)will be comforted for ^(J)all his multitude, Pharaoh and all his army, slain by the sword, declares the Lord God. ^32 (K)For I spread terror ^(L)in the land of the living; and he shall be laid to rest among ^(M)the uncircumcised, with those who are slain by the sword, Pharaoh and all his multitude, declares the Lord God.”
