¹⁹ Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me David your son, ^(A)who is with the sheep.”

¹⁵ but David went back and forth from Saul ^(A)to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem.

¹¹ Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, ^(A)“There remains yet the youngest,^[a] but behold, he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, ^(B)“Send and get him, for we will not sit down till he comes here.”

Jesus Calls the First Disciples

^18 (A)While walking by ^(B)the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. ¹⁹ And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you ^(C)fishers of men.”^{[a] 20} Immediately they left their nets and followed him. ²¹ And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. ²² Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

¹⁴ Then Amos answered and said to Amaziah, ^(A)“I was^[a] no prophet, nor a prophet's son, but ^(B)I was a herdsman and a dresser of sycamore figs. ^15 (C)But the Lord took me from following the flock, and the Lord said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’

The Call of Elisha

¹⁹ So he departed from there and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen in front of him, and he was with the twelfth. Elijah passed by him and cast ^(A)his cloak upon him.
