David in Saul's Service

^14 (A)Now the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, ^(B)and a harmful spirit from the Lord tormented him.

^12 (A)Saul was afraid of David because ^(B)the Lord was with him ^(C)but had departed from Saul.

¹⁰ The next day ^(A)a harmful spirit from God rushed upon Saul, and ^(B)he raved within his house while David was ^(C)playing the lyre, as he did day by day. ^(D)Saul had his spear in his hand.

²⁰ And she said, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” And he awoke from his sleep and said, “I will go out as at other times and shake myself free.” But he did not know that ^(A)the Lord had left him.

¹⁵ Then Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” Saul answered, “I am in great distress, for the Philistines are warring against me, and ^(A)God has turned away from me and ^(B)answers me no more, either by prophets or by dreams. Therefore I have summoned you to tell me what I shall do.”

^23 (A)And God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the leaders of Shechem, and the leaders of Shechem ^(B)dealt treacherously with Abimelech,

²² And the Lord said to him, ‘By what means?’ And he said, ‘I will go out, and will be ^(A)a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.’ And he said, ‘You are to entice him, and you shall succeed; go out and do so.’

^6 (A)And the Spirit of God rushed upon Saul when he heard these words, and his anger was greatly kindled.

¹⁵ But the evil spirit answered them, ^(A)“Jesus I know, and Paul I recognize, but who are you?” ¹⁶ And the man in whom was the evil spirit leaped on them, mastered all^[a] of them and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
