⁵ The people who live in Samaria fear
    for the calf-idol^(A) of Beth Aven.^[a](B)
Its people will mourn over it,
    and so will its idolatrous priests,^(C)
those who had rejoiced over its splendor,
    because it is taken from them into exile.^(D)

⁸ “Sound the trumpet^(A) in Gibeah,^(B)
    the horn in Ramah.^(C)
Raise the battle cry in Beth Aven^[a];^(D)
    lead on, Benjamin.

¹⁵ “Though you, Israel, commit adultery,
    do not let Judah become guilty.

“Do not go to Gilgal;^(A)
    do not go up to Beth Aven.^[a](B)
    And do not swear, ‘As surely as the Lord lives!’^(C)

⁸ I will make their widows^(A) more numerous
    than the sand of the sea.
At midday I will bring a destroyer^(B)
    against the mothers of their young men;
suddenly I will bring down on them
    anguish and terror.^(C)

¹⁹ Your descendants^(A) would have been like the sand,^(B)
    your children like its numberless grains;^(C)
their name would never be blotted out^(D)
    nor destroyed from before me.”
