⁴ And all Israel heard it said that Saul had defeated the garrison of the Philistines, and also that Israel had become a stench to the Philistines. And the people were called out to join Saul at Gilgal.

³⁰ Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, ^(A)“You have brought trouble on me ^(B)by making me stink to the inhabitants of the land, ^(C)the Canaanites and the Perizzites. ^(D)My numbers are few, and if they gather themselves against me and attack me, I shall be destroyed, both I and my household.”

²¹ and ^(A)they said to them, “The Lord look on you and judge, because you have made us stink in the sight of Pharaoh and his servants, and have put a sword in their hand to kill us.”

⁸ In one month ^(A)I destroyed the three shepherds. But I became impatient with them, and they also detested me.

¹⁴ Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, let us go to Gilgal and there renew the kingdom.” ¹⁵ So all the people went to ^(A)Gilgal, and there they made Saul king ^(B)before the Lord in Gilgal. There ^(C)they sacrificed peace offerings before the Lord, and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

⁸ Then go down before me ^(A)to Gilgal. And behold, I am coming down to you to offer burnt offerings and ^(B)to sacrifice peace offerings. ^(C)Seven days you shall wait, until I come to you and show you what you shall do.”

⁹ And the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the ^(A)reproach of Egypt from you.” And so the name of that place is called ^(B)Gilgal^[a] to this day.

³⁴ you shall say, ^(A)‘Your servants have been keepers of livestock ^(B)from our youth even until now, both we and our fathers,’ in order that you may dwell ^(C)in the land of Goshen, for every shepherd is ^(D)an abomination to the Egyptians.”
