²⁰ So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son.^(A) She named^(B) him Samuel,^[a](C) saying, “Because I asked the Lord for him.”

⁵¹ Joseph named his firstborn^(A) Manasseh^[a](B) and said, “It is because God has made me forget all my trouble and all my father’s household.” ⁵² The second son he named Ephraim^[b](C) and said, “It is because God has made me fruitful^(D) in the land of my suffering.”

²¹ She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,^[a](A) because he will save his people from their sins.”^(B)

¹⁰ When the child grew older, she took him to Pharaoh’s daughter and he became her son. She named^(A) him Moses,^[a] saying, “I drew^(B) him out of the water.”

²² Zipporah gave birth to a son, and Moses named him Gershom,^[a](A) saying, “I have become a foreigner^(B) in a foreign land.”

⁶ Then Rachel said, “God has vindicated me;^(A) he has listened to my plea and given me a son.”^(B) Because of this she named him Dan.^[a](C)

⁷ Rachel’s servant Bilhah^(D) conceived again and bore Jacob a second son. ⁸ Then Rachel said, “I have had a great struggle with my sister, and I have won.”^(E) So she named him Naphtali.^[b](F)

⁹ When Leah^(G) saw that she had stopped having children,^(H) she took her servant Zilpah^(I) and gave her to Jacob as a wife.^{(J) 10} Leah’s servant Zilpah^(K) bore Jacob a son. ¹¹ Then Leah said, “What good fortune!”^[c] So she named him Gad.^[d](L)

¹² Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a second son. ¹³ Then Leah said, “How happy I am! The women will call me^(M) happy.”^(N) So she named him Asher.^[e](O)

¹⁴ During wheat harvest,^(P) Reuben went out into the fields and found some mandrake plants,^(Q) which he brought to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah, “Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.”

¹⁵ But she said to her, “Wasn’t it enough^(R) that you took away my husband? Will you take my son’s mandrakes too?”

“Very well,” Rachel said, “he can sleep with you tonight in return for your son’s mandrakes.”^(S)

¹⁶ So when Jacob came in from the fields that evening, Leah went out to meet him. “You must sleep with me,” she said. “I have hired you with my son’s mandrakes.”^(T) So he slept with her that night.

¹⁷ God listened to Leah,^(U) and she became pregnant and bore Jacob a fifth son. ¹⁸ Then Leah said, “God has rewarded me for giving my servant to my husband.”^(V) So she named him Issachar.^[f](W)

¹⁹ Leah conceived again and bore Jacob a sixth son. ²⁰ Then Leah said, “God has presented me with a precious gift. This time my husband will treat me with honor,^(X) because I have borne him six sons.” So she named him Zebulun.^[g](Y)

²¹ Some time later she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.^(Z)

³² Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son.^(A) She named him Reuben,^[a](B) for she said, “It is because the Lord has seen my misery.^(C) Surely my husband will love me now.”

³³ She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “Because the Lord heard that I am not loved,^(D) he gave me this one too.” So she named him Simeon.^[b](E)

³⁴ Again she conceived, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “Now at last my husband will become attached to me,^(F) because I have borne him three sons.” So he was named Levi.^[c](G)

³⁵ She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “This time I will praise the Lord.” So she named him Judah.^[d](H) Then she stopped having children.^(I)

¹¹ The angel of the Lord^(A) also said to her:

²⁹ He named him Noah^[a](A) and said, “He will comfort us in the labor and painful toil of our hands caused by the ground the Lord has cursed.^(B)”
