The Birth of Samuel

1 There was a certain man of ^(A)Ramathaim-zophim of ^(B)the hill country of Ephraim whose name was Elkanah the son of Jeroham, son of Elihu, son of Tohu, son of Zuph, ^(C)an Ephrathite.

²⁵ The sons of Elkanah: Amasai and Ahimoth, ²⁶ Elkanah his son, Zophai his son, Nahath his son, ²⁷ Eliab his son, Jeroham his son, Elkanah his son.

³⁴ son of Elkanah, son of Jeroham, son of Eliel, son of Toah,

¹⁹ They rose early in the morning and worshiped before the Lord; then they went back to their house at ^(A)Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and the Lord ^(B)remembered her.

² The name of the man was Elimelech and the name of his wife Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion. They were ^(A)Ephrathites from Bethlehem in Judah. They went into the country of Moab and remained there.

¹² Now David was ^(A)the son of an ^(B)Ephrathite of Bethlehem in Judah, ^(C)named Jesse, ^(D)who had eight sons. In the days of Saul the man was already old and advanced in years.^[a]

⁵ When they came to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant^[a] who was with him, “Come, let us go back, ^(A)lest my father cease to care about the donkeys and become anxious about us.”

A Levite and His Concubine

19 In those days, ^(A)when there was no king in Israel, a certain Levite was sojourning in the remote parts of ^(B)the hill country of Ephraim, who took to himself a concubine from ^(C)Bethlehem in Judah.
