11 Na-hách, vua Am-môn, cầm quân lên bao vây thành Gia-bết, trong địa phận Ga-la-át. Mọi người trong thành Gia-bết nài xin vua Na-hách: “Xin vua ký vào hiệp ước với chúng tôi, chúng tôi sẽ phục dịch vua.” 2 Nhưng Na-hách, vua Am-môn đáp: “Ta sẽ ký hiệp ước với các ngươi nếu các ngươi chịu cho ta móc con mắt phải của mỗi người trong các ngươi, và như vậy, toàn dân Y-sơ-ra-ên sẽ bị sỉ nhục.”
3 Các trưởng lão thành Gia-bết cố nài nỉ: “Xin vua hoãn cho chúng tôi bảy ngày, để chúng tôi sai sứ giả đi khắp lãnh thổ Y-sơ-ra-ên; nếu không có ai cứu giúp chúng tôi, chúng tôi sẽ đầu hàng vua.”
4 Khi các sứ giả đến thành Ghi-bê-a, nơi Sau-lơ sinh sống, và kể lại sự việc cho dân trong thành nghe, mọi người đều khóc òa lên.
5 Ngay lúc ấy, Sau-lơ từ ngoài đồng về tới, theo sau đàn bò. Anh hỏi: “Có chuyện gì mà dân chúng khóc như vậy?” Họ thuật lại cho anh nghe sự tình của thành Gia-bê. 6 Sau-lơ vừa nghe xong, Thần Linh của Đức Chúa Trời chiếm ngự anh, anh bừng bừng nổi giận. 7 Anh bắt một cặp bò, xả ra từng miếng, rồi gởi các sứ giả đi khắp lãnh thổ Y-sơ-ra-ên, kèm theo sứ điệp: “Người nào không theo Sau-lơ và Sa-mu-ên ra trận, bò của người đó sẽ bị xả ra từng mảnh y như vậy.” CHÚA khiến dân chúng kinh sợ, họ đồng lòng hiệp ý như một người, kéo nhau ra trình diện. 8 Sau-lơ tập họp chúng tại Bê-xéc: có 300,000 người thuộc các bộ tộc phía bắc,[a] và 30,000 người thuộc bộ tộc Giu-đa.
9 Họ bảo các sứ giả đến từ thành Gia-bết, tỉnh Ga-la-át: “Các anh nói với dân trong thành như vầy: ‘Ngày mai, khi mặt trời vừa nóng, anh chị em sẽ được giải cứu.’ ” Khi các sứ giả đem tin về cho dân thành Gia-bết, họ mừng rỡ, 10 và nói với vua Na-hách: “Ngày mai chúng tôi ra đầu hàng, xin vua đối xử với chúng tôi thế nào tùy ý.”
11 Đêm ấy, Sau-lơ chia quân ra thành ba cánh, đột nhập trại quân Am-môn lúc tờ mờ sáng, đánh giết cho đến khi trời nóng. Địch quân còn sống sót chạy tán loạn, mỗi người một ngả.
12 Bấy giờ dân Y-sơ-ra-ên thưa với ông Sa-mu-ên: “Ai nói: ‘Sau-lơ mà làm vua chúng ta sao?’ Hãy đem những người đó ra, để chúng tôi xử tử họ.” 13 Nhưng Sau-lơ đáp: “Không ai phải bị xử tử ngày hôm nay, vì hôm nay là ngày CHÚA cho dân Y-sơ-ra-ên chiến thắng.”
14 Ông Sa-mu-ên bảo dân chúng: “Chúng ta hãy đến Ghinh-ganh lập lại lễ tấn phong Sau-lơ làm vua.” 15 Mọi người đều đến Ghinh-ganh, và tại đó họ làm lễ tấn phong Sau-lơ làm vua trước mặt CHÚA, tại Ghinh-ganh. Tại đó, họ dâng tế lễ liên hoan trước mặt CHÚA, và tại đó, vua Sau-lơ và toàn dân Y-sơ-ra-ên nhộn nhịp ăn mừng.

11 Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabeshgilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee.
2 And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.
3 And the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days' respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to thee.
4 Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told the tidings in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voices, and wept.
5 And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh.
6 And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly.
7 And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the Lord fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.
8 And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.
9 And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabeshgilead, To morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.
10 Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you.
11 And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.
12 And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.
13 And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the Lord hath wrought salvation in Israel.
14 Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.
15 And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the Lord in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the Lord; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

Saul Defeats the Ammonites
11 (A)Then Nahash the Ammonite went up and besieged (B)Jabesh-gilead, and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, (C)“Make a treaty with us, and we will serve you.” 2 But Nahash the Ammonite said to them, “On this condition I will make a treaty with you, (D)that I gouge out all your right eyes, and thus (E)bring disgrace on all Israel.” 3 The elders of Jabesh said to him, “Give us seven days' respite that we may send messengers through all the territory of Israel. Then, if there is no one to save us, we will give ourselves up to you.” 4 When the messengers came to (F)Gibeah of Saul, they reported the matter in the ears of the people, (G)and all the people wept aloud.
5 Now, behold, Saul was coming from the field behind the oxen. And Saul said, “What is wrong with the people, that they are weeping?” So they told him the news of the men of Jabesh. 6 (H)And the Spirit of God rushed upon Saul when he heard these words, and his anger was greatly kindled. 7 He took a yoke of oxen (I)and cut them in pieces and sent them throughout all the territory of Israel by the hand of the messengers, saying, (J)“Whoever does not come out after Saul and Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen!” Then the dread of the Lord fell upon the people, and they came out (K)as one man. 8 When he mustered them at (L)Bezek, (M)the people of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand. 9 And they said to the messengers who had come, “Thus shall you say to the men of Jabesh-gilead: ‘Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you shall have (N)salvation.’” When the messengers came and told the men of Jabesh, they were glad. 10 Therefore the men of Jabesh said, (O)“Tomorrow we will give ourselves up to you, and you may do to us whatever seems good to you.” 11 (P)And the next day Saul put the people (Q)in three companies. And they came into the midst of the camp in the morning watch and struck down the Ammonites until the heat of the day. And those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.
The Kingdom Is Renewed
12 Then the people said to Samuel, (R)“Who is it that said, ‘Shall Saul reign over us?’ (S)Bring the men, that we may put them to death.” 13 But Saul said, (T)“Not a man shall be put to death this day, for today (U)the Lord has worked (V)salvation in Israel.” 14 Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, let us go to Gilgal and there renew the kingdom.” 15 So all the people went to (W)Gilgal, and there they made Saul king (X)before the Lord in Gilgal. There (Y)they sacrificed peace offerings before the Lord, and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

11 Y SUBIO Naas Ammonita, y asentó campo contra Jabes de Galaad. Y todos los de Jabes dijeron á Naas: Haz alianza con nosotros, y te serviremos.
2 Y Naas Ammonita les respondió: Con esta condición haré alianza con vosotros, que á cada uno de todos vosotros saque el ojo derecho, y ponga esta afrenta sobre todo Israel.
3 Entonces los ancianos de Jabes le dijeron: Danos siete días, para que enviemos mensajeros á todos los términos de Israel; y si nadie hubiere que nos defienda, saldremos á ti.
4 Y llegando los mensajeros á Gabaa de Saúl, dijeron estas palabras en oídos del pueblo; y todo el pueblo lloró á voz en grito.
5 Y he aquí Saúl que venía del campo, tras los bueyes; y dijo Saúl: ¿Qué tiene el pueblo, que lloran? Y contáronle las palabras de los hombres de Jabes.
6 Y el espíritu de Dios arrebató á Saúl en oyendo estas palabras, y encendióse en ira en gran manera.
7 Y tomando un par de bueyes, cortólos en piezas, y enviólas por todos los términos de Israel por mano de mensajeros, diciendo: Cualquiera que no saliere en pos de Saúl y en pos de Samuel, así será hecho á sus bueyes. Y cayó temor de Jehová sobre el pueblo, y salieron como un solo hombre.
8 Y contóles en Bezec; y fueron los hijos de Israel trescientos mil, y treinta mil los hombres de Judá.
9 Y respondieron á los mensajeros que habían venido: Así diréis á los de Jabes de Galaad: Mañana en calentando el sol, tendréis salvamento. Y vinieron los mensajeros, y declaráronlo á los de Jabes, los cuales se holgaron.
10 Y los de Jabes dijeron: Mañana saldremos á vosotros, para que hagáis con nosotros todo lo que bien os pareciere.
11 Y el día siguiente dispuso Saúl el pueblo en tres escuadrones, y entraron en medio del real á la vela de la mañana, é hirieron á los Ammonitas hasta que el día calentaba: y los que quedaron fueron dispersos, tal que no quedaron dos de ellos juntos.
12 El pueblo entonces dijo á Samuel: ¿Quiénes son lo que decían: Reinará Saúl sobre nosotros? Dad nos esos hombres, y los mataremos.
13 Y Saúl dijo: No morirá hoy ninguno, porque hoy ha obrado Jehová salud en Israel.
14 Mas Samuel dijo al pueblo: Venid, vamos á Gilgal para que renovemos allí el reino.
15 Y fué todo el pueblo á Gilgal, é invistieron allí á Saúl por rey delante de Jehová en Gilgal. Y sacrificaron allí víctimas pacíficas delante de Jehová; y alegráronse mucho allí Saúl y todos los de Israel.
