David Anointed as King
16 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul? I have rejected him from being king over Israel. Fill your horn with oil and set out; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.”(A) 2 Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears of it, he will kill me.” And the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’(B) 3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do, and you shall anoint for me the one whom I name to you.”(C) 4 Samuel did what the Lord commanded and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling and said, “Do you come peaceably?”(D) 5 He said, “Peaceably. I have come to sacrifice to the Lord; sanctify yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.” And he sanctified Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.(E)
6 When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, “Surely his anointed is now before the Lord.”(F) 7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him, for the Lord does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”(G) 8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel. He said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.”(H) 9 Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.”(I) 10 Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel, and Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen any of these.” 11 Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, “There remains yet the youngest, but he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and bring him, for we will not sit down until he comes here.”(J) 12 He sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. The Lord said, “Rise and anoint him, for this is the one.”(K) 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and the spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward. Samuel then set out and went to Ramah.(L)

16 L’Eternel dit à Samuel: Quand cesseras-tu de pleurer sur Saül? Je l’ai rejeté, afin qu’il ne règne plus sur Israël. Remplis ta corne d’huile, et va; je t’enverrai chez Isaï, Bethléhémite, car j’ai vu parmi ses fils celui que je désire pour roi. 2 Samuel dit: Comment irai-je? Saül l’apprendra, et il me tuera. Et l’Eternel dit: Tu emmèneras avec toi une génisse, et tu diras: Je viens pour offrir un sacrifice à l’Eternel. 3 Tu inviteras Isaï au sacrifice; je te ferai connaître ce que tu dois faire, et tu oindras pour moi celui que je te dirai.
4 Samuel fit ce que l’Eternel avait dit, et il alla à Bethléhem. Les anciens de la ville accoururent effrayés au-devant de lui et dirent: Ton arrivée annonce-t-elle quelque chose d’heureux? 5 Il répondit: Oui; je viens pour offrir un sacrifice à l’Eternel. Sanctifiez-vous, et venez avec moi au sacrifice. Il fit aussi sanctifier Isaï et ses fils, et il les invita au sacrifice.
6 Lorsqu’ils entrèrent, il se dit, en voyant Eliab: Certainement, l’oint de l’Eternel est ici devant lui. 7 Et l’Eternel dit à Samuel: Ne prends point garde à son apparence et à la hauteur de sa taille, car je l’ai rejeté. L’Eternel ne considère pas ce que l’homme considère; l’homme regarde à ce qui frappe les yeux, mais l’Eternel regarde au cœur. 8 Isaï appela Abinadab, et le fit passer devant Samuel; et Samuel dit: L’Eternel n’a pas non plus choisi celui-ci. 9 Isaï fit passer Schamma; et Samuel dit: L’Eternel n’a pas non plus choisi celui-ci. 10 Isaï fit passer sept de ses fils devant Samuel; et Samuel dit à Isaï: L’Eternel n’a choisi aucun d’eux. 11 Puis Samuel dit à Isaï: Sont-ce là tous tes fils? Et il répondit: Il reste encore le plus jeune, mais il fait paître les brebis. Alors Samuel dit à Isaï: Envoie-le chercher, car nous ne nous placerons pas avant qu’il ne soit venu ici. 12 Isaï l’envoya chercher. Or il était blond, avec de beaux yeux et une belle figure. L’Eternel dit à Samuel: Lève-toi, oins-le, car c’est lui! 13 Samuel prit la corne d’huile, et l’oignit au milieu de ses frères. L’Esprit de l’Eternel saisit David, à partir de ce jour et dans la suite. Samuel se leva, et s’en alla à Rama.

A Man Born Blind Receives Sight
9 As he walked along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned; he was born blind so that God’s works might be revealed in him.(A) 4 We[a] must work the works of him who sent me[b] while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work.(B) 5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”(C) 6 When he had said this, he spat on the ground and made mud with the saliva and spread the mud on the man’s eyes,(D) 7 saying to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). Then he went and washed and came back able to see.(E) 8 The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar began to ask, “Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?” 9 Some were saying, “It is he.” Others were saying, “No, but it is someone like him.” He kept saying, “I am he.” 10 But they kept asking him, “Then how were your eyes opened?” 11 He answered, “The man called Jesus made mud, spread it on my eyes, and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ Then I went and washed and received my sight.” 12 They said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I do not know.”
The Pharisees Investigate the Healing
13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. 14 Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes.(F) 15 Then the Pharisees also began to ask him how he had received his sight. He said to them, “He put mud on my eyes. Then I washed, and now I see.” 16 Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not observe the Sabbath.” Others said, “How can a man who is a sinner perform such signs?” And they were divided.(G) 17 So they said again to the blind man, “What do you say about him? It was your eyes he opened.” He said, “He is a prophet.”(H)
18 The Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight 19 and asked them, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?” 20 His parents answered, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind, 21 but we do not know how it is that now he sees, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.” 22 His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that anyone who confessed Jesus[c] to be the Messiah[d] would be put out of the synagogue.(I) 23 Therefore his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”
24 So for the second time they called the man who had been blind, and they said to him, “Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner.”(J) 25 He answered, “I do not know whether he is a sinner. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.” 26 They said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” 27 He answered them, “I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?” 28 Then they reviled him, saying, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.(K) 29 We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from.”(L) 30 The man answered, “Here is an astonishing thing! You do not know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes. 31 We know that God does not listen to sinners, but he does listen to one who worships him and obeys his will.(M) 32 Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind. 33 If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” 34 They answered him, “You were born entirely in sins, and are you trying to teach us?” And they drove him out.
Spiritual Blindness
35 Jesus heard that they had driven him out, and when he found him he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”[e](N) 36 He answered, “And who is he, sir?[f] Tell me, so that I may believe in him.”(O) 37 Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and the one speaking with you is he.”(P) 38 He said, “Lord,[g] I believe.” And he worshiped him. 39 Jesus said, “I came into this world for judgment, so that those who do not see may see and those who do see may become blind.”(Q) 40 Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard this and said to him, “Surely we are not blind, are we?”(R) 41 Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would not have sin. But now that you say, ‘We see,’ your sin remains.(S)

9 Jésus vit, en passant, un homme aveugle de naissance. 2 Ses disciples lui posèrent cette question: Rabbi, qui a péché, cet homme ou ses parents, pour qu’il soit né aveugle? 3 Jésus répondit: Ce n’est pas que lui ou ses parents aient péché; mais c’est afin que les œuvres de Dieu soient manifestées en lui. 4 Il faut que je fasse, tandis qu’il est jour, les œuvres de celui qui m’a envoyé; la nuit vient, où personne ne peut travailler. 5 Pendant que je suis dans le monde, je suis la lumière du monde.
6 Après avoir dit cela, il cracha à terre, et fit de la boue avec sa salive. Puis il appliqua cette boue sur les yeux de l’aveugle, 7 et lui dit: Va, et lave-toi au réservoir de Siloé (nom qui signifie envoyé). Il y alla, se lava, et s’en retourna voyant clair. 8 Ses voisins et ceux qui auparavant l’avaient connu comme un mendiant disaient: N’est-ce pas là celui qui se tenait assis et qui mendiait? 9 Les uns disaient: C’est lui. 13 Ils menèrent vers les pharisiens celui qui avait été aveugle. 14 Or, c’était un jour de sabbat que Jésus avait fait de la boue, et lui avait ouvert les yeux. 15 De nouveau, les pharisiens lui demandèrent comment il avait pu voir. Et il leur dit: Il a appliqué de la boue sur mes yeux, je me suis lavé, et je vois. 16 Sur quoi quelques-uns des pharisiens dirent: Cet homme ne vient pas de Dieu, car il n’observe pas le sabbat. Comment donc voit-il maintenant? 20 Ses parents répondirent: Nous savons que c’est notre fils, et qu’il est né aveugle; 21 mais comment il voit maintenant, ou qui lui a ouvert les yeux, c’est ce que nous ne savons. Interrogez-le lui-même, il a de l’âge, il parlera de ce qui le concerne. 22 Ses parents dirent cela parce qu’ils craignaient les Juifs; car les Juifs avaient déjà convenu que, si quelqu’un reconnaissait Jésus pour le Christ, il serait exclu de la synagogue. 23 C’est pourquoi ses parents dirent: Il a de l’âge, interrogez-le lui-même.
24 Les pharisiens appelèrent une seconde fois l’homme qui avait été aveugle, et ils lui dirent: Donne gloire à Dieu; nous savons que cet homme est un pécheur. 25 Il répondit: S’il est un pécheur, je ne sais; je sais une chose, c’est que j’étais aveugle et que maintenant je vois. 26 Ils lui dirent: Que t’a-t-il fait? Comment t’a-t-il ouvert les yeux? 27 Il leur répondit: Je vous l’ai déjà dit, et vous n’avez pas écouté; pourquoi voulez-vous l’entendre encore? Voulez-vous aussi devenir ses disciples? 28 Ils l’injurièrent et dirent: C’est toi qui es son disciple; nous, nous sommes disciples de Moïse. 29 Nous savons que Dieu a parlé à Moïse; mais celui-ci, nous ne savons d’où il est. 30 Cet homme leur répondit: Il est étonnant que vous ne sachiez d’où il est; et cependant il m’a ouvert les yeux. 31 Nous savons que Dieu n’exauce point les pécheurs; mais, si quelqu’un l’honore et fait sa volonté, il l’exauce. 32 Jamais on n’a entendu dire que quelqu’un ait ouvert les yeux d’un aveugle-né. 33 Si cet homme ne venait pas de Dieu, il ne pourrait rien faire. 34 Ils lui répondirent: Tu es né tout entier dans le péché, et tu nous enseignes! Et ils le chassèrent.
35 Jésus apprit qu’ils l’avaient chassé; et, l’ayant rencontré, il lui dit: Crois-tu au Fils de Dieu? 36 Il répondit: Et qui est-il, Seigneur, afin que je croie en lui? 37 Tu l’as vu, lui dit Jésus, et celui qui te parle, c’est lui. 38 Et il dit: Je crois, Seigneur. Et il l’adora.
39 Puis Jésus dit: Je suis venu dans ce monde pour un jugement, pour que ceux qui ne voient point voient, et que ceux qui voient deviennent aveugles. 40 Quelques pharisiens qui étaient avec lui, ayant entendu ces paroles, lui dirent: Nous aussi, sommes-nous aveugles? 41 Jésus leur répondit: Si vous étiez aveugles, vous n’auriez pas de péché. Mais maintenant vous dites: Nous voyons. C’est pour cela que votre péché subsiste.
