Salomón pide sabiduría(A)
3 Salomón entró en alianza con el faraón, rey de Egipto, casándose con su hija, a la cual llevó a la Ciudad de David mientras terminaba de construir su palacio, el templo del Señor y el muro alrededor de Jerusalén. 2 Como aún no se había construido un templo en honor al nombre del Señor, el pueblo seguía ofreciendo sacrificios en los lugares altos. 3 Salomón amaba al Señor y cumplía los decretos de su padre David. Sin embargo, también iba a los santuarios locales para ofrecer sacrificios y quemar incienso.
4 Como en Gabaón estaba el santuario más importante, Salomón acostumbraba a ir al lugar para ofrecer sacrificios. Allí ofreció mil holocaustos; 5 y en ese mismo sitio se apareció el Señor en un sueño y le dijo:
—Pídeme lo que quieras.
6 Salomón respondió:
—Tú trataste con mucho amor a tu siervo David, mi padre, pues se condujo delante de ti con lealtad, justicia y honestidad.[a] Y como hoy se puede ver, has reafirmado tu gran amor al concederle que un hijo suyo lo suceda en el trono.
7 »Ahora, Señor mi Dios, me has hecho rey en lugar de mi padre David. No soy más que un muchacho y apenas sé cómo comportarme. 8 Sin embargo, aquí me tienes, un siervo tuyo en medio del pueblo que has escogido, un pueblo tan numeroso que es imposible contarlo. 9 Yo te ruego que des a tu siervo discernimiento para gobernar a tu pueblo y para distinguir entre el bien y el mal. De lo contrario, ¿quién podrá gobernar a este gran pueblo tuyo?».
10 Al Señor le agradó que Salomón hubiera hecho esa petición. 11 Y Dios le dijo:
—Como has pedido esto, y no larga vida ni riquezas para ti, ni has pedido la muerte de tus enemigos, sino discernimiento para administrar justicia, 12 voy a concederte lo que has pedido. Te daré un corazón sabio y prudente, como nadie antes de ti lo ha tenido ni lo tendrá después. 13 Además, aunque no me lo has pedido, te daré tantas riquezas y esplendor que en toda tu vida ningún rey podrá compararse contigo. 14 Si andas por mis caminos y obedeces mis estatutos y mandamientos, como lo hizo tu padre David, te daré una larga vida.
15 Cuando Salomón despertó y se dio cuenta del sueño que había tenido, regresó a Jerusalén. Se presentó ante el arca del pacto del Señor y ofreció holocaustos y sacrificios de comunión. Luego ofreció un banquete para toda su corte.
Un gobernante sabio
16 Tiempo después, dos prostitutas fueron a presentarse ante el rey. 17 Una de ellas le dijo:
—Mi señor, esta mujer y yo vivimos en la misma casa. Mientras ella estaba allí conmigo, yo di a luz 18 y a los tres días también ella dio a luz. No había en la casa nadie más que nosotras dos.
19 »Pues bien, una noche esta mujer se acostó encima de su hijo y el niño murió. 20 Pero ella se levantó a medianoche, mientras yo dormía, y, tomando a mi hijo, lo acostó junto a ella y puso a su hijo muerto a mi lado. 21 Cuando amaneció, me levanté para amamantar a mi hijo, ¡y me di cuenta de que estaba muerto! Pero, al clarear el día, lo observé bien y pude ver que no era el hijo que yo había dado a luz».
22 —¡No es cierto! —exclamó la otra mujer—. ¡El niño que está vivo es el mío y el muerto es el tuyo!
—¡Mientes! —insistió la primera—. El niño muerto es el tuyo y el que está vivo es el mío.
Y se pusieron a discutir delante del rey.
23 El rey deliberó: «Una dice: “El niño que está vivo es el mío y el muerto es el tuyo”. Y la otra dice: “¡No es cierto! El niño muerto es el tuyo y el que está vivo es el mío”».
24 Entonces ordenó:
—Tráiganme una espada.
Cuando se la trajeron, 25 dijo:
—Partan en dos al niño que está vivo y denle una mitad a esta y la otra mitad a aquella.
26 La verdadera madre, angustiada por su hijo, dijo al rey:
—¡Por favor, mi señor! ¡Dele usted a ella el niño que está vivo, pero no lo mate!
En cambio, la otra exclamó:
—¡Ni para mí ni para ti! ¡Que lo partan!
27 Entonces el rey ordenó:
—No lo maten. Entréguenle a la primera el niño que está vivo, pues ella es la madre.
28 Cuando todos los israelitas se enteraron de la sentencia que el rey había pronunciado, sintieron un gran respeto por él, pues vieron que tenía sabiduría de Dios para administrar justicia.

Salomo ber om vishet
3 Genom giftermål blev Salomo släkt med farao, kungen i Egypten. Han tog faraos dotter till hustru och förde henne in i Davids stad. Där fick hon bo till dess han hade byggt sitt hus färdigt liksom Herrens hus och muren runt omkring Jerusalem. 2 Men folket offrade på höjderna, eftersom ännu inte något hus hade blivit byggt åt Herrens namn. 3 Salomo älskade Herren och följde sin fader Davids stadgar, utom det att han offrade på höjderna och tände rökelse där.
4 Kungen begav sig till Gibeon för att offra, detta var ju den förnämsta offerhöjden, och Salomo offrade ettusen brännoffer på altaret där. 5 I Gibeon visade sig Herren för Salomo i en dröm om natten. Gud sade: "Bed mig om det du vill att jag skall ge dig." 6 Salomo svarade: "Du har visat stor nåd mot din tjänare, min fader David, därför att han vandrade inför dig i sanning och rättfärdighet och med ärligt hjärta mot dig. Du bevarade åt honom denna stora nåd och gav honom en son som sitter på hans tron, så som det är i dag. 7 Du, Herre, min Gud, har nu gjort din tjänare till kung efter min fader David. Men jag är bara en ung man, jag vet varken ut eller in. 8 Din tjänare är här bland ditt folk som du har utvalt, ett folk så stort och talrikt att det inte kan räknas på grund av sin mängd. 9 Ge din tjänare ett lydigt hjärta, så att han kan vara domare för ditt folk och skilja mellan gott och ont. För vem kan annars vara domare för detta ditt stora folk?"
10 Det behagade Herren att Salomo bad om sådant. 11 Gud sade till honom: "Eftersom du har bett om detta och inte bett om ett långt liv, inte heller om rikedom eller om dina fienders liv, utan om att kunna förstå vad som är rätt, 12 se, därför vill jag göra som du önskar och ge dig ett så vist och förståndigt hjärta att någon lik dig inte har funnits före dig och inte heller skall komma efter dig. 13 Dessutom ger jag dig också vad du inte har bett om, nämligen både rikedom och ära, så att i alla dina dagar ingen kung skall vara din like. 14 Om du går på mina vägar och håller fast vid mina stadgar och bud, så som din fader David gjorde, då skall jag ge dig ett långt liv."
15 Då vaknade Salomo, och se, det var en dröm. När han kom till Jerusalem, trädde han fram inför Herrens förbundsark och bar fram brännoffer och gemenskapsoffer. Sedan ordnade han en fest för alla sina tjänare.
Salomos vishet som domare
16 Vid den tiden kom det två skökor till kungen och trädde fram inför honom. 17 Den ena kvinnan sade: "Hör på mig, herre. Jag och den här kvinnan bor i samma hus och jag födde barn där i huset hos henne. 18 Tredje dagen efter det att jag hade fött mitt barn födde den här kvinnan också ett barn. Vi var tillsammans, och ingen annan var hos oss i huset, det var bara vi två. 19 En natt dog den här kvinnans son, för hon hade legat på honom. 20 Då gick hon upp mitt i natten och tog min son från min sida, medan din tjänarinna sov, och lade honom i sin famn. Men sin döde son lade hon i min famn. 21 Jag steg upp på morgonen för att amma min son, och se, då var han död. Men när jag på morgonen såg närmare efter, se, då var det inte min son, som jag hade fött."
22 Då sade den andra kvinnan: "Så är det inte. Det är min son som lever, och det är din son som är död." Men den första kvinnan svarade: "Det är inte så. Din son är död, och min son lever." Så grälade de inför kungen.
23 Kungen sade: "Den ena säger: Min son är den som lever, och din son är den som är död. Den andra säger: Det är inte så. Det är din son som är död och min som lever." 24 Då sade kungen: "Ge mig ett svärd." När man hade burit fram svärdet till kungen, 25 sade han: "Hugg det levande barnet mitt itu och ge den ena hälften åt den ena kvinnan och den andra hälften åt den andra." 26 Den kvinna som var mor till det barn som levde, sade då till kungen, ty hennes hjärta brann av kärlek till sonen: "Min herre, ge henne barnet som lever. Döda det bara inte!" Men den andra sade: "Det skall varken vara mitt eller ditt. Hugg itu det!" 27 Då tog kungen till orda och sade: "Ge henne det levande barnet. Döda det inte. Hon är barnets mor."
28 När hela Israel fick höra talas om den dom som kungen hade fällt, häpnade de över kungen, ty de såg att Guds vishet fanns i honom så att han kunde skipa rätt.

3 And Solomon made affinity with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and took Pharaoh's daughter, and brought her into the city of David, until he had made an end of building his own house, and the house of the Lord, and the wall of Jerusalem round about.
2 Only the people sacrificed in high places, because there was no house built unto the name of the Lord, until those days.
3 And Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of David his father: only he sacrificed and burnt incense in high places.
4 And the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there; for that was the great high place: a thousand burnt offerings did Solomon offer upon that altar.
5 In Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee.
6 And Solomon said, Thou hast shewed unto thy servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great kindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.
7 And now, O Lord my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in.
8 And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude.
9 Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?
10 And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.
11 And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment;
12 Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.
13 And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days.
14 And if thou wilt walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as thy father David did walk, then I will lengthen thy days.
15 And Solomon awoke; and, behold, it was a dream. And he came to Jerusalem, and stood before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and offered up burnt offerings, and offered peace offerings, and made a feast to all his servants.
16 Then came there two women, that were harlots, unto the king, and stood before him.
17 And the one woman said, O my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house.
18 And it came to pass the third day after that I was delivered, that this woman was delivered also: and we were together; there was no stranger with us in the house, save we two in the house.
19 And this woman's child died in the night; because she overlaid it.
20 And she arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me, while thine handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom.
21 And when I rose in the morning to give my child suck, behold, it was dead: but when I had considered it in the morning, behold, it was not my son, which I did bear.
22 And the other woman said, Nay; but the living is my son, and the dead is thy son. And this said, No; but the dead is thy son, and the living is my son. Thus they spake before the king.
23 Then said the king, The one saith, This is my son that liveth, and thy son is the dead: and the other saith, Nay; but thy son is the dead, and my son is the living.
24 And the king said, Bring me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king.
25 And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other.
26 Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it.
27 Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the mother thereof.
28 And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do judgment.
