Guerra contra Ben Adad
20 Entonces Ben Adad, rey de Aram(A), reunió todo su ejército, y tenía con él treinta y dos reyes con caballos y carros(B); y subió, sitió a Samaria(C) y peleó contra ella. 2 Envió mensajeros a la ciudad, a Acab, rey de Israel, diciéndole: «Así dice Ben Adad: 3 “Tu plata y tu oro son míos; míos son también tus mujeres y tus hijos más hermosos”». 4 El rey de Israel le respondió: «Sea conforme a tu palabra, oh rey, señor mío; tuyo soy yo y todo lo que tengo». 5 Después volvieron los mensajeros y dijeron: «Así dice Ben Adad: “Por cierto que envié a decirte: ‘Me darás tu plata, tu oro, tus mujeres y tus hijos’. 6 Pero mañana como a esta hora te enviaré mis siervos, y registrarán tu casa y las casas de tus siervos; y todo lo que sea agradable a tus ojos lo tomarán en su mano y se lo llevarán”».
7 El rey de Israel llamó a todos los ancianos del país, y les dijo: «Miren cómo este solo busca hacer daño(D); pues él envió a pedirme mis mujeres, mis hijos, mi plata y mi oro, y no se los negué». 8 Y todos los ancianos y todo el pueblo le dijeron: «No escuche ni consienta». 9 Entonces él respondió a los mensajeros de Ben Adad: «Digan a mi señor el rey: “Haré todo lo que mandaste a tu siervo la primera vez, pero esto otro no lo puedo hacer”». Se fueron los mensajeros y le llevaron la respuesta. 10 Y Ben Adad envió a decirle: «Así me hagan los dioses y aun me añadan(E), si el polvo de Samaria bastará para llenar las manos de todo el pueblo que me sigue». 11 Respondió el rey de Israel: «Díganle: “No se jacte(F) el que se pone las armas como el que se las quita”». 12 Cuando Ben Adad oyó esta palabra, estaba bebiendo(G) con[a] los reyes en las tiendas, y dijo a sus siervos: «Tomen posiciones». Y tomaron posiciones contra la ciudad.
13 Y un profeta se acercó a Acab, rey de Israel, y le dijo: «Así dice el Señor: “¿Has visto toda esta gran multitud? Hoy la entregaré en tu mano, y sabrás que Yo soy el Señor(H)”». 14 Acab le preguntó: «¿Por medio de quién?». Y él dijo: «Así dice el Señor: “Por medio de los jóvenes de los jefes de las provincias”». Entonces Acab dijo: «¿Quién comenzará[b] la batalla?». Y él respondió: «Tú». 15 Entonces pasó revista a los jóvenes de los jefes de las provincias y eran 232; después de ellos, pasó revista a todo el pueblo, es decir, todos los israelitas, 7,000.
16 Salieron al mediodía, mientras Ben Adad estaba bebiendo hasta emborracharse en las tiendas(I) junto con[c] los treinta y dos reyes que lo ayudaban. 17 Los jóvenes de los jefes de las provincias salieron primero; y envió Ben Adad mensajeros que le avisaron, diciendo: «Han salido hombres de Samaria». 18 Entonces dijo: «Si en paz han salido, préndanlos vivos; o si en guerra han salido, préndanlos vivos(J)». 19 Salieron, pues, aquellos de la ciudad, los jóvenes de los jefes de las provincias y el ejército que los seguía. 20 Y mató cada uno a su hombre; los arameos huyeron e Israel los persiguió, y Ben Adad, rey de Aram, escapó a caballo con algunos jinetes. 21 El rey de Israel salió y atacó los caballos y los carros, y derrotó a los arameos causándoles gran matanza.
22 Entonces el profeta se acercó al rey de Israel(K), y le dijo: «Vaya, fortalézcase, y entienda bien lo que tiene que hacer; porque a la vuelta del año(L) el rey de Aram subirá contra usted». 23 Y los siervos del rey de Aram le dijeron: «Sus dioses son dioses de los montes(M), por eso fueron más fuertes que nosotros; mejor peleemos contra ellos en la llanura, pues ¿no seremos más fuertes que ellos? 24 Haga, pues, esto: quite a los reyes, cada uno de su puesto, y ponga capitanes en su lugar. 25 Aliste un ejército como el ejército que perdió, caballo por caballo y carro por carro. Entonces pelearemos contra ellos en la llanura, pues ¿no seremos más fuertes que ellos?». Él escuchó su consejo[d] y lo hizo así.
26 A la vuelta del año(N), Ben Adad alistó a los arameos y subió a Afec(O) para pelear contra Israel. 27 Y los israelitas fueron alistados y provistos de raciones, y salieron a su encuentro. Los israelitas acamparon delante de ellos como dos rebaños pequeños de cabras pero los arameos llenaban la tierra(P). 28 Entonces un hombre de Dios(Q) se acercó y habló al rey de Israel, y dijo: «Así dice el Señor: “Porque los arameos han dicho: ‘El Señor es un dios de los montes(R), pero no es un dios de los valles; por tanto, entregaré a toda esta gran multitud en tu mano, y sabrás que Yo soy el Señor(S)’”». 29 Acamparon unos frente a otros por siete días. Al séptimo día comenzó la batalla, y los israelitas mataron de los arameos a 100,000 hombres de a pie en un solo día. 30 Los demás huyeron a Afec(T), a la ciudad, y el muro cayó sobre los 27,000 hombres que quedaban. También Ben Adad huyó y se refugió en la ciudad en un aposento interior(U).
31 Y sus siervos le dijeron(V): «Hemos oído que los reyes de la casa de Israel son reyes misericordiosos; le rogamos que nos deje poner cilicio en nuestros lomos(W) y cuerdas sobre nuestras cabezas, y salgamos al rey de Israel; quizás él salve su vida». 32 Se ciñeron cilicio en sus lomos, pusieron cuerdas sobre sus cabezas y vinieron al rey de Israel(X), y dijeron: «Su siervo Ben Adad(Y) dice: “Te ruego que me perdones la vida”». Y él dijo: «¿Vive todavía? Es mi hermano». 33 Y los hombres tomaron esto como señal[e], y tomando de él la palabra prestamente dijeron: «Tu hermano Ben Adad vive». Y él dijo: «Vayan y tráiganlo». Entonces Ben Adad salió a él, y él le hizo subir en el carro. 34 Y Ben Adad(Z) le dijo al rey: «Devolveré las ciudades que mi padre tomó de tu padre, y te harás calles en Damasco, como mi padre hizo en Samaria. “Y yo”, dijo Acab, con este pacto te dejaré ir». Hizo, pues, pacto con él y lo dejó ir.
35 Y cierto hombre de los hijos de los profetas(AA) dijo a otro por palabra del Señor(AB): «Te ruego que me hieras». Pero el hombre se negó a herirlo. 36 Entonces le dijo: «Porque no has atendido a la voz del Señor, tan pronto como te apartes de mí, un león te matará(AC)». Y tan pronto se apartó de él, un león lo encontró y lo mató. 37 Entonces halló a otro hombre y le dijo: «Te ruego que me hieras». Y el hombre le dio un golpe, hiriéndolo. 38 Y el profeta se fue y esperó al rey en el camino; se había disfrazado(AD) con una venda sobre los ojos. 39 Cuando el rey pasaba, clamó al rey y dijo: «Su siervo fue al centro de la batalla; y allí, un hombre se apartó de las filas y me trajo a uno, y me dijo: “Guarda a este hombre; si por alguna razón llega a faltar, entonces tu vida responderá por su vida(AE) o pagarás 34 kilos de plata”. 40 Mientras su siervo estaba ocupado aquí y allá, él desapareció». Y el rey de Israel le dijo: «Así será tu sentencia; tú mismo lo has decidido». 41 Entonces él se apresuró a quitarse la venda de los ojos, y el rey de Israel lo reconoció como uno de los profetas. 42 Y él le dijo: «Así dice el Señor: “Porque has dejado salir de tu mano al hombre a quien Yo había destinado a la destrucción, tu vida responderá por su vida(AF) y tu pueblo por su pueblo”». 43 El rey de Israel se fue a su casa disgustado y molesto(AG), y entró en Samaria.

Victory over Ben-hadad
20 Now King Ben-hadad(A) of Aram assembled his entire army. Thirty-two kings,(B) along with horses and chariots, were with him. He marched up, besieged Samaria,(C) and fought against it. 2 He sent messengers into the city to King Ahab of Israel and said to him, “This is what Ben-hadad says: 3 ‘Your silver and your gold are mine! And your best wives and children are mine as well!’” (D)
4 Then the king of Israel answered, “Just as you say, my lord the king: I am yours, along with all that I have.”
5 The messengers then returned and said, “This is what Ben-hadad says: ‘I have sent messengers to you, saying, “You are to give me your silver, your gold, your wives, and your children.” 6 But at this time tomorrow I will send my servants to you,[a](E) and they will search your palace and your servants’ houses. They will lay their hands on and take away whatever is precious to you.’”
7 Then the king of Israel called for all the elders of the land and said, “Recognize[b] that this one is only looking for trouble,(F) for he demanded my wives, my children, my silver, and my gold, and I didn’t turn him down.”
8 All the elders and all the people said to him, “Don’t listen or agree.”
9 So he said to Ben-hadad’s messengers, “Say to my lord the king, ‘Everything you demanded of your servant the first time, I will do, but this thing I cannot do.’” So the messengers left and took word back to him.
10 Then Ben-hadad sent messengers to him and said, “May the gods punish me and do so severely(G) if Samaria’s dust(H) amounts to a handful for each of the people who follow me.”
11 The king of Israel answered, “Say this: ‘Don’t let the one who puts on his armor boast(I) like the one who takes it off.’”
12 When Ben-hadad heard this response, while he and the kings were drinking(J) in their quarters,[c] he said to his servants, “Take your positions.” So they took their positions against the city.
13 A prophet approached King Ahab of Israel and said, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Do you see this whole huge army? Watch, I am handing it over to you today so that you may know that I am the Lord.’”(K)
14 Ahab asked, “By whom?”
And the prophet said, “This is what the Lord says: ‘By the young men of the provincial leaders.’”
Then he asked, “Who is to start the battle?” (L)
He said, “You.”
15 So Ahab mobilized the young men of the provincial leaders, and there were 232. After them he mobilized all the Israelite troops: 7,000.(M) 16 They marched out at noon while Ben-hadad and the thirty-two kings(N) who were helping him were getting drunk in their quarters. 17 The young men of the provincial leaders marched out first. Then Ben-hadad sent out scouts, and they reported to him, saying, “Men are marching out of Samaria.”(O)
18 So he said, “If they have marched out in peace,(P) take them alive, and if they have marched out for battle, take them alive.”
19 The young men of the provincial leaders and the army behind them marched out from the city, 20 and each one struck down his opponent.(Q) So the Arameans fled and Israel pursued them,(R) but King Ben-hadad of Aram escaped on a horse with the cavalry. 21 Then the king of Israel marched out and attacked the cavalry and the chariots. He inflicted a severe slaughter on Aram.
22 The prophet approached the king of Israel and said to him, “Go and strengthen yourself, then consider carefully[d] what you should do, for in the spring(S) the king of Aram will attack you.”
23 Now the king of Aram’s servants said to him, “Their gods are gods of the hill country.(T) That’s why they were stronger than we were. Instead, we should fight with them on the plain; then we will certainly be stronger than they are. 24 Also do this: remove each king from his position and appoint captains in their place. 25 Raise another army for yourself like the army you lost—horse for horse, chariot for chariot—and let’s fight with them on the plain; and we will certainly be stronger than they are.” The king listened to them and did it.
26 In the spring, Ben-hadad mobilized the Arameans and went up to Aphek(U) to battle Israel. 27 The Israelites mobilized, gathered supplies, and went to fight them. The Israelites camped in front of them like two little flocks of goats, while the Arameans filled the landscape.(V)
28 Then the man of God(W) approached and said to the king of Israel, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Because the Arameans have said, “The Lord is a god of the mountains and not a god of the valleys,”(X) I will hand over all this whole huge army to you. Then you will know that I am the Lord.’”(Y)
29 They camped opposite each other for seven days. On the seventh day,(Z) the battle took place, and the Israelites struck down the Arameans—one hundred thousand foot soldiers in one day. 30 The ones who remained fled into the city of Aphek, and the wall fell on those twenty-seven thousand remaining men.
Ben-hadad also fled and went into an inner room(AA) in the city. 31 His servants said to him, “Consider this: we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings. So let’s put sackcloth around our waists(AB) and ropes around our heads, and let’s go out to the king of Israel. Perhaps he will spare your life.”
32 So they dressed with sackcloth around their waists and ropes around their heads, went to the king of Israel, and said, “Your servant Ben-hadad says, ‘Please spare my life.’”
So he said, “Is he still alive? He is my brother.”
33 Now the men were looking for a sign of hope, so they quickly picked up on this[e] and responded, “Yes, it is your brother Ben-hadad.”
Then he said, “Go and bring him.”
So Ben-hadad came out to him, and Ahab had him come up into the chariot. 34 Then Ben-hadad said to him, “I restore to you the cities that my father took from your father,(AC) and you may set up marketplaces for yourself in Damascus, like my father set up in Samaria.”(AD)
Ahab responded, “On the basis of this treaty, I release you.” So he made a treaty with him and released him.
Ahab Rebuked by the Lord
35 One of the sons of the prophets(AE) said to his fellow prophet by the word of the Lord, “Strike me!” But the man refused to strike him.
36 He told him, “Because you did not listen to the Lord, mark my words: When you leave me, a lion will kill you.”(AF) When he left him, a lion attacked and killed him.
37 The prophet found another man and said to him, “Strike me!” So the man struck him, inflicting a wound. 38 Then the prophet went and waited for the king on the road. He disguised(AG) himself with a bandage over his eyes. 39 As the king was passing by, he cried out to the king and said, “Your servant marched out into the middle of the battle. Suddenly, a man turned aside and brought someone to me and said, ‘Guard this man! If he is ever missing, it will be your life in place of his life,(AH) or you will weigh out seventy-five pounds[f] of silver.’ 40 But while your servant was busy here and there, he disappeared.”
The king of Israel said to him, “That will be your sentence; you yourself have decided it.”(AI)
41 He quickly removed the bandage from his eyes. The king of Israel recognized that he was one of the prophets. 42 The prophet said to him, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Because you released from your hand the man I had set apart for destruction,(AJ) it will be your life in place of his life and your people in place of his people.’” 43 The king of Israel left for home resentful and angry,(AK) and he entered Samaria.
