Guerra contra Ben-adad
20 Y Ben-adad, rey de Aram(A), reunió todo su ejército, y tenía con él treinta y dos reyes con caballos y carros(B); y subió, sitió a Samaria(C) y peleó contra ella. 2 Entonces envió mensajeros a la ciudad, a Acab, rey de Israel, diciéndole: Así dice Ben-adad: 3 «Tu plata y tu oro son míos; míos son también tus mujeres y tus hijos más hermosos». 4 Y el rey de Israel respondió, y dijo: Sea conforme a tu palabra, oh rey, señor mío; tuyo soy yo y todo lo que tengo. 5 Después volvieron los mensajeros y dijeron: Así dice Ben-adad[a]: «Por cierto que envié a decirte: “Me darás tu plata, tu oro, tus mujeres y tus hijos”. 6 Pero[b] mañana como a esta hora te enviaré mis siervos, y registrarán tu casa y las casas de tus siervos; y sucederá que todo lo que sea agradable a[c] tus ojos lo tomarán[d] en su mano y se lo llevarán».
7 El rey de Israel llamó a todos los ancianos del país, y les dijo: Reconoced ahora y ved que este solo busca hacer daño(D); pues él envió a pedirme mis mujeres, mis hijos, mi plata y mi oro, y no se los negué. 8 Y todos los ancianos y todo el pueblo le dijeron: No escuches ni consientas. 9 Entonces él respondió a los mensajeros de Ben-adad: Decid a mi señor el rey: «Haré todo lo que mandaste a tu siervo la primera vez, pero esto otro no lo puedo hacer». Se fueron los mensajeros y le llevaron la respuesta[e]. 10 Y Ben-adad envió a decirle: Así me hagan los dioses y aun me añadan(E), si el polvo de Samaria bastará para llenar las manos[f] de todo el pueblo que me sigue[g]. 11 Respondió el rey de Israel y dijo: Decidle: «No se jacte(F) el que se ciñe las armas como el que se las desciñe». 12 Y[h] cuando Ben-adad oyó esta palabra, estaba bebiendo(G) con[i] los reyes en las tiendas[j], y dijo a sus siervos: Tomad posiciones. Y tomaron posiciones contra la ciudad.
13 Y he aquí, un profeta se acercó a Acab, rey de Israel, y le dijo: Así dice el Señor: «¿Has visto toda esta gran multitud? He aquí, la entregaré hoy en tu mano, y sabrás que yo soy el Señor(H)». 14 Y Acab dijo: ¿Por medio de quién? Y él dijo: Así dice el Señor: «Por medio de los jóvenes de los jefes de las provincias». Entonces dijo: ¿Quién comenzará[k] la batalla? Y él respondió: Tú. 15 Entonces pasó revista a los jóvenes de los jefes de las provincias y eran doscientos treinta y dos; después de ellos, pasó revista a todo el pueblo, es decir, todos los hijos de Israel, siete mil.
16 Salieron al mediodía, mientras Ben-adad estaba bebiendo hasta emborracharse en las tiendas[l](I) junto con[m] los treinta y dos reyes que lo ayudaban. 17 Los jóvenes de los jefes de las provincias salieron primero; y envió Ben-adad mensajeros que le avisaron, diciendo: Han salido hombres de Samaria. 18 Entonces dijo: Si en paz han salido, prendedlos vivos; o si en guerra han salido, prendedlos vivos(J). 19 Salieron, pues, aquellos de la ciudad, los jóvenes de los jefes de las provincias y el ejército que los seguía. 20 Y mató[n] cada uno a su hombre; los arameos huyeron e Israel los persiguió, y Ben-adad, rey de Aram, escapó a caballo con algunos jinetes. 21 Y el rey de Israel salió y atacó[o] los caballos y los carros, y derrotó[p] a los arameos causándoles gran matanza.
22 Entonces el profeta se acercó al rey de Israel(K), y le dijo: Ve, fortalécete, y entiende y mira lo que tienes que hacer; porque a la vuelta del año(L) el rey de Aram subirá contra ti. 23 Y los siervos del rey de Aram le dijeron: Sus dioses son dioses de los montes(M), por eso fueron más fuertes que nosotros; mejor peleemos contra ellos en la llanura, pues ¿no seremos más fuertes que ellos? 24 Haz, pues, esto: quita a los reyes, cada uno de su puesto, y pon capitanes en su lugar, 25 y alista[q] un ejército como el ejército que perdiste, caballo por caballo y carro por carro. Entonces pelearemos contra ellos en la llanura, pues ¿no seremos más fuertes que ellos? Él escuchó su consejo[r] y lo hizo así.
26 Y sucedió que a la vuelta del año(N), Ben-adad alistó a los arameos y subió a Afec(O) para pelear contra Israel. 27 Y los hijos de Israel fueron alistados y provistos de raciones, y fueron a su encuentro; los hijos de Israel acamparon delante de ellos como dos rebañuelos de cabras pero los arameos llenaban la tierra(P). 28 Entonces un hombre de Dios(Q) se acercó y habló al rey de Israel, y dijo: Así dice el Señor: «Porque los arameos han dicho: “El Señor es un dios de los montes(R), pero no es un dios de los valles; por tanto, entregaré a toda esta gran multitud en tu mano, y sabrás que yo soy el Señor(S)”». 29 Acamparon unos frente a otros por siete días. Y sucedió que al séptimo día comenzó la batalla, y los hijos de Israel mataron[s] de los arameos a cien mil hombres de a pie en un solo día. 30 Los demás huyeron a Afec(T), a la ciudad, y el muro cayó sobre los veintisiete mil hombres que quedaban. También Ben-adad huyó y se refugió[t] en la ciudad en un aposento interior[u](U).
31 Y sus siervos le dijeron(V): He aquí, hemos oído que los reyes de la casa de Israel son reyes misericordiosos; te rogamos que nos dejes poner cilicio en nuestros lomos(W) y cuerdas sobre nuestras cabezas, y salgamos al rey de Israel; quizás él salve tu vida[v]. 32 Se ciñeron cilicio en sus lomos, pusieron cuerdas sobre sus cabezas y vinieron al rey de Israel(X), y dijeron: Tu siervo Ben-adad(Y) dice: «Te ruego que me perdones la vida[w]». Y él dijo: ¿Vive todavía? Es mi hermano. 33 Y los hombres tomaron esto como señal[x], y tomando de él la palabra prestamente dijeron: Tu hermano Ben-adad vive. Y él dijo: Id, traedlo. Entonces Ben-adad salió a él, y él le hizo subir en el carro. 34 Y Ben-adad(Z) le dijo: Devolveré las ciudades que mi padre tomó de tu padre, y te harás calles en Damasco, como mi padre hizo en Samaria. Y yo, dijo Acab, con este pacto te dejaré ir. Hizo, pues, pacto con él y lo dejó ir.
35 Y cierto hombre de los hijos de los profetas(AA) dijo a otro[y] por palabra del Señor(AB): Te ruego que me hieras. Pero el hombre se negó a herirlo. 36 Entonces le dijo: Porque no has atendido a la voz del Señor, he aquí, tan pronto como te apartes de mí, un león te matará[z](AC). Y tan pronto se apartó de él, un león lo encontró y lo mató[aa]. 37 Entonces halló a otro hombre y le dijo: Te ruego que me hieras. Y el hombre le dio un golpe, hiriéndolo[ab]. 38 Y el profeta se fue y esperó al rey en el camino; se había disfrazado(AD) con una venda sobre los ojos. 39 Cuando el rey pasaba, clamó al rey y dijo: Tu siervo fue al centro de la batalla; y he aquí, un hombre se apartó de las filas y me trajo a uno, y me dijo: «Guarda a este hombre; si por alguna razón llega a faltar, entonces tu vida[ac] responderá por su vida[ad](AE) o pagarás un talento[ae] de plata». 40 Y mientras tu siervo estaba ocupado aquí y allá, él desapareció. Y el rey de Israel le dijo: Así será tu sentencia; tú mismo lo has decidido. 41 Entonces él se apresuró a quitarse la venda de los ojos, y el rey de Israel lo reconoció como[af] uno de los profetas. 42 Y él le dijo: Así dice el Señor: «Porque has dejado salir de tu mano al hombre a quien yo había destinado a la destrucción, he aquí, tu vida responderá por su vida(AF) y tu pueblo por su pueblo». 43 El rey de Israel se fue a su casa disgustado y molesto(AG), y entró en Samaria.

Ahab derrota a los sirios
20 Ben-hadad, rey de Siria, reunió a todo su ejército, y a treinta y dos reyes aliados, con su caballería y sus carros de combate, y fue a la ciudad de Samaria, la rodeó y la atacó. 2-3 Al mismo tiempo envió mensajeros a esta ciudad para que le dijeran a Ahab, rey de Israel: «Ben-hadad dice: “Tus riquezas me pertenecen, lo mismo que tus mujeres y tus mejores hijos.”»
4 El rey de Israel contestó: «Tal como Su Majestad lo ha dicho, yo y todo lo que tengo es suyo.»
5 Los mensajeros fueron una vez más a ver a Ahab, y le dijeron: «Ben-hadad dice: “Ya te he mandado a decir que tienes que darme tus riquezas, tus mujeres y tus hijos. 6 Además, mañana a estas horas enviaré a mis oficiales a que registren tu palacio y las casas de tus funcionarios, y todo lo que les guste lo tomarán para sí.”»
7 Entonces el rey de Israel mandó llamar a todos los ancianos del país, y les dijo:
—Como ustedes podrán darse cuenta, este hombre está buscando hacerme daño, a pesar de que yo no me he negado a entregarle mis mujeres, mis hijos y mis riquezas.
8 —Pues no lo escuches ni le hagas caso —respondieron los ancianos y toda la gente.
9 Entonces Ahab dijo a los enviados de Ben-hadad:
—Digan a Su Majestad que haré todo lo que me ordenó al principio, pero que no puedo hacer lo que ahora me exige.
Los enviados llevaron la respuesta a Ben-hadad, 10 y Ben-hadad mandó a decir a Ahab: «¡Que los dioses me castiguen duramente, si de Samaria queda polvo suficiente para darle un puñado a cada uno de mis seguidores!»
11 Por su parte, el rey de Israel le mandó a decir: «No cantes victoria antes de tiempo.»
12 Cuando Ben-hadad recibió la respuesta, estaba bebiendo con los otros reyes en las enramadas que habían improvisado. Entonces dijo a sus oficiales: «¡Al ataque!» Y todos se dispusieron a atacar la ciudad.
13 Mientras tanto, un profeta se presentó ante Ahab, rey de Israel, y le dijo:
—El Señor ha dicho: “Aunque veas esa gran multitud de enemigos, yo la voy a entregar hoy en tus manos, para que sepas que yo soy el Señor.”
14 —¿Y por medio de quién me la va a entregar? —preguntó Ahab.
—El Señor ha dicho que por medio de los jóvenes que ayudan a los gobernadores de las provincias —respondió el profeta.
—¿Y quién atacará primero? —insistió Ahab.
—Tú —respondió el profeta.
15 Entonces Ahab pasó revista a los jóvenes que ayudaban a los gobernadores de las provincias, que eran doscientos treinta y dos, y a todo el ejército israelita, compuesto de siete mil hombres. 16 Salieron al mediodía, mientras Ben-hadad y los treinta y dos reyes aliados suyos seguían emborrachándose en las enramadas que habían improvisado, 17 y avanzaron en primer lugar los ayudantes de los gobernadores. Cuando Ben-hadad recibió aviso de que algunos hombres habían salido de Samaria, 18 ordenó: «¡Sea que hayan salido en son de paz o en son de guerra, los quiero vivos!»
19 Los ayudantes de los gobernadores salieron de la ciudad, seguidos por el ejército. 20 Y cada uno de ellos mató a un contrario, y los sirios huyeron. Los israelitas los persiguieron, pero Ben-hadad, rey de los sirios, escapó a caballo con algunos soldados de caballería. 21 Entonces el rey de Israel avanzó y se apoderó de sus caballos y carros de combate, y les causó a los sirios una tremenda derrota. 22 Después el profeta se presentó ante el rey de Israel, y le dijo:
—Ve y refuerza tu ejército, y piensa bien lo que debes hacer; porque dentro de un año el rey de Siria volverá a atacarte.
23 Los oficiales del rey de Siria, por su parte, dijeron a éste:
—Los dioses de los israelitas son dioses de las montañas; por eso nos han vencido. Pero si luchamos contra ellos en la llanura, con toda seguridad los venceremos. 24 Lo que ahora debe hacer Su Majestad es quitar de su puesto a los reyes, y poner oficiales en su lugar, 25 organizar luego un ejército como el que fue derrotado, caballo por caballo y carro por carro. Entonces lucharemos contra ellos en el llano, y sin duda los venceremos.
Ben-hadad prestó atención a este consejo y lo siguió. 26 Un año después, Ben-hadad pasó revista a los sirios y se trasladó a Afec para luchar contra Israel. 27 También los israelitas pasaron revista a sus fuerzas y les dieron provisiones, y salieron al encuentro de los sirios. Acampados frente a los sirios, parecían apenas dos rebaños de cabras, pues los sirios ocupaban todo el terreno.
28 En esto se presentó un profeta ante el rey de Israel, y le dijo:
—Así dice el Señor: “Puesto que los sirios han dicho que yo soy un dios de las montañas y no un dios de los valles, voy a entregar en tus manos a toda esta gran multitud. Así sabrás que yo soy el Señor.”
29 Durante siete días, sirios e israelitas estuvieron acampados frente a frente, y el séptimo día tuvo lugar la batalla. Ese día los israelitas mataron a cien mil soldados sirios de infantería. 30 El resto del ejército huyó a la ciudad de Afec, pero la muralla de la ciudad cayó sobre los veintisiete mil hombres que habían logrado escapar. Ben-hadad también huyó, y llegó a la ciudad, y se escondió de habitación en habitación.
31 Entonces sus oficiales le dijeron:
—Hemos sabido que los reyes israelitas cumplen los tratos que hacen; así que pongámonos ropas ásperas y una soga en el cuello, y vayamos ante el rey de Israel, a ver si nos perdona la vida.
32 Entonces se pusieron ropas ásperas y una soga en el cuello, y se presentaron ante el rey de Israel y le dijeron:
—Ben-hadad ruega a Su Majestad que le perdone la vida.
Ahab respondió:
—¿Vive todavía? ¡Para mí es como un hermano!
33 A los hombres les pareció esto una buena señal, y tomándole la palabra contestaron inmediatamente:
—¡Ben-hadad es hermano de Su Majestad!
—¡Pues vayan a traerlo! —contestó Ahab.
Entonces Ben-hadad se presentó ante Ahab, y Ahab le hizo subir en su carro. 34 Luego Ben-hadad le dijo:
—Te devolveré las ciudades que mi padre le quitó al tuyo; y tú puedes tener negocios en Damasco, como mi padre los tenía en Samaria.
—Yo, por mi parte, me comprometo a dejarte ir —contestó Ahab.
De este modo, Ahab hizo un pacto con Ben-hadad y le dejó que se fuera.
35 Sin embargo, un hombre que pertenecía al grupo de los profetas pidió a un compañero suyo, por orden del Señor:
—¡Hiéreme, por favor!
Pero el otro no quiso hacerlo. 36 Entonces el profeta le dijo:
—Por no haber hecho caso a la orden del Señor, un león te atacará cuando te separes de mí.
En efecto, en cuanto el otro se separó del profeta, un león le salió al encuentro y lo mató.
37 Después se encontró el profeta con otro hombre, y le pidió también que lo hiriera, y aquel hombre lo golpeó y lo hirió. 38 Entonces el profeta fue a esperar al rey en el camino, disfrazado con un vendaje sobre los ojos. 39 Y cuando el rey estaba pasando, el profeta le dijo en voz alta:
—Este servidor de Su Majestad marchó al frente de batalla, y de entre las filas salió un soldado y me trajo un prisionero. Me pidió que me hiciera cargo de él, advirtiéndome que, si se me escapaba, yo le respondería con mi vida o tendría que pagarle tres mil monedas de plata. 40 Y como este servidor de Su Majestad se entretuvo con otras cosas, el prisionero se me escapó.
El rey de Israel le contestó:
—Tú mismo te has declarado culpable, y has pronunciado tu sentencia.
41 Pero el profeta se quitó rápidamente el vendaje de los ojos, y el rey se dio cuenta de que era uno de los profetas. 42 Entonces el profeta le dijo:
—Así dice el Señor: “Como tú dejaste escapar al hombre que él había condenado a morir, con tu vida pagarás por la suya, y con tu pueblo por el suyo.”
43 Entonces el rey de Israel se fue a Samaria, triste y malhumorado, y se metió en su palacio.

Ben-Hadad Attacks Samaria
20 Now Ben-Hadad(A) king of Aram mustered his entire army. Accompanied by thirty-two kings with their horses and chariots, he went up and besieged Samaria(B) and attacked it. 2 He sent messengers into the city to Ahab king of Israel, saying, “This is what Ben-Hadad says: 3 ‘Your silver and gold are mine, and the best of your wives and children are mine.’”
4 The king of Israel answered, “Just as you say, my lord the king. I and all I have are yours.”
5 The messengers came again and said, “This is what Ben-Hadad says: ‘I sent to demand your silver and gold, your wives and your children. 6 But about this time tomorrow I am going to send my officials to search your palace and the houses of your officials. They will seize everything you value and carry it away.’”
7 The king of Israel summoned all the elders(C) of the land and said to them, “See how this man is looking for trouble!(D) When he sent for my wives and my children, my silver and my gold, I did not refuse him.”
8 The elders and the people all answered, “Don’t listen to him or agree to his demands.”
9 So he replied to Ben-Hadad’s messengers, “Tell my lord the king, ‘Your servant will do all you demanded the first time, but this demand I cannot meet.’” They left and took the answer back to Ben-Hadad.
10 Then Ben-Hadad sent another message to Ahab: “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if enough dust(E) remains in Samaria to give each of my men a handful.”
11 The king of Israel answered, “Tell him: ‘One who puts on his armor should not boast(F) like one who takes it off.’”
12 Ben-Hadad heard this message while he and the kings were drinking(G) in their tents,[a] and he ordered his men: “Prepare to attack.” So they prepared to attack the city.
Ahab Defeats Ben-Hadad
13 Meanwhile a prophet(H) came to Ahab king of Israel and announced, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Do you see this vast army? I will give it into your hand today, and then you will know(I) that I am the Lord.’”
14 “But who will do this?” asked Ahab.
The prophet replied, “This is what the Lord says: ‘The junior officers under the provincial commanders will do it.’”
“And who will start(J) the battle?” he asked.
The prophet answered, “You will.”
15 So Ahab summoned the 232 junior officers under the provincial commanders. Then he assembled the rest of the Israelites, 7,000 in all. 16 They set out at noon while Ben-Hadad and the 32 kings allied with him were in their tents getting drunk.(K) 17 The junior officers under the provincial commanders went out first.
Now Ben-Hadad had dispatched scouts, who reported, “Men are advancing from Samaria.”
18 He said, “If they have come out for peace, take them alive; if they have come out for war, take them alive.”
19 The junior officers under the provincial commanders marched out of the city with the army behind them 20 and each one struck down his opponent. At that, the Arameans fled, with the Israelites in pursuit. But Ben-Hadad king of Aram escaped on horseback with some of his horsemen. 21 The king of Israel advanced and overpowered the horses and chariots and inflicted heavy losses on the Arameans.
22 Afterward, the prophet(L) came to the king of Israel and said, “Strengthen your position and see what must be done, because next spring(M) the king of Aram will attack you again.”
23 Meanwhile, the officials of the king of Aram advised him, “Their gods are gods(N) of the hills. That is why they were too strong for us. But if we fight them on the plains, surely we will be stronger than they. 24 Do this: Remove all the kings from their commands and replace them with other officers. 25 You must also raise an army like the one you lost—horse for horse and chariot for chariot—so we can fight Israel on the plains. Then surely we will be stronger than they.” He agreed with them and acted accordingly.
26 The next spring(O) Ben-Hadad mustered the Arameans and went up to Aphek(P) to fight against Israel. 27 When the Israelites were also mustered and given provisions, they marched out to meet them. The Israelites camped opposite them like two small flocks of goats, while the Arameans covered the countryside.(Q)
28 The man of God came up and told the king of Israel, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Because the Arameans think the Lord is a god of the hills and not a god(R) of the valleys, I will deliver this vast army into your hands, and you will know(S) that I am the Lord.’”
29 For seven days they camped opposite each other, and on the seventh day the battle was joined. The Israelites inflicted a hundred thousand casualties on the Aramean foot soldiers in one day. 30 The rest of them escaped to the city of Aphek,(T) where the wall collapsed(U) on twenty-seven thousand of them. And Ben-Hadad fled to the city and hid(V) in an inner room.
31 His officials said to him, “Look, we have heard that the kings of Israel are merciful.(W) Let us go to the king of Israel with sackcloth(X) around our waists and ropes around our heads. Perhaps he will spare your life.”
32 Wearing sackcloth around their waists and ropes around their heads, they went to the king of Israel and said, “Your servant Ben-Hadad says: ‘Please let me live.’”
The king answered, “Is he still alive? He is my brother.”
33 The men took this as a good sign and were quick to pick up his word. “Yes, your brother Ben-Hadad!” they said.
“Go and get him,” the king said. When Ben-Hadad came out, Ahab had him come up into his chariot.
34 “I will return the cities(Y) my father took from your father,” Ben-Hadad(Z) offered. “You may set up your own market areas(AA) in Damascus,(AB) as my father did in Samaria.”
Ahab said, “On the basis of a treaty(AC) I will set you free.” So he made a treaty with him, and let him go.
A Prophet Condemns Ahab
35 By the word of the Lord one of the company of the prophets(AD) said to his companion, “Strike me with your weapon,” but he refused.(AE)
36 So the prophet said, “Because you have not obeyed the Lord, as soon as you leave me a lion(AF) will kill you.” And after the man went away, a lion found him and killed him.
37 The prophet found another man and said, “Strike me, please.” So the man struck him and wounded him. 38 Then the prophet went and stood by the road waiting for the king. He disguised himself with his headband down over his eyes. 39 As the king passed by, the prophet called out to him, “Your servant went into the thick of the battle, and someone came to me with a captive and said, ‘Guard this man. If he is missing, it will be your life for his life,(AG) or you must pay a talent[b] of silver.’ 40 While your servant was busy here and there, the man disappeared.”
“That is your sentence,”(AH) the king of Israel said. “You have pronounced it yourself.”
41 Then the prophet quickly removed the headband from his eyes, and the king of Israel recognized him as one of the prophets. 42 He said to the king, “This is what the Lord says: ‘You(AI) have set free a man I had determined should die.[c](AJ) Therefore it is your life for his life,(AK) your people for his people.’” 43 Sullen and angry,(AL) the king of Israel went to his palace in Samaria.

20 And Benhadad the king of Syria gathered all his host together: and there were thirty and two kings with him, and horses, and chariots; and he went up and besieged Samaria, and warred against it.
2 And he sent messengers to Ahab king of Israel into the city, and said unto him, Thus saith Benhadad,
3 Thy silver and thy gold is mine; thy wives also and thy children, even the goodliest, are mine.
4 And the king of Israel answered and said, My lord, O king, according to thy saying, I am thine, and all that I have.
5 And the messengers came again, and said, Thus speaketh Benhadad, saying, Although I have sent unto thee, saying, Thou shalt deliver me thy silver, and thy gold, and thy wives, and thy children;
6 Yet I will send my servants unto thee to morrow about this time, and they shall search thine house, and the houses of thy servants; and it shall be, that whatsoever is pleasant in thine eyes, they shall put it in their hand, and take it away.
7 Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and said, Mark, I pray you, and see how this man seeketh mischief: for he sent unto me for my wives, and for my children, and for my silver, and for my gold; and I denied him not.
8 And all the elders and all the people said unto him, Hearken not unto him, nor consent.
9 Wherefore he said unto the messengers of Benhadad, Tell my lord the king, All that thou didst send for to thy servant at the first I will do: but this thing I may not do. And the messengers departed, and brought him word again.
10 And Benhadad sent unto him, and said, The gods do so unto me, and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people that follow me.
11 And the king of Israel answered and said, Tell him, Let not him that girdeth on his harness boast himself as he that putteth it off.
12 And it came to pass, when Ben-hadad heard this message, as he was drinking, he and the kings in the pavilions, that he said unto his servants, Set yourselves in array. And they set themselves in array against the city.
13 And, behold, there came a prophet unto Ahab king of Israel, saying, Thus saith the Lord, Hast thou seen all this great multitude? behold, I will deliver it into thine hand this day; and thou shalt know that I am the Lord.
14 And Ahab said, By whom? And he said, Thus saith the Lord, Even by the young men of the princes of the provinces. Then he said, Who shall order the battle? And he answered, Thou.
15 Then he numbered the young men of the princes of the provinces, and they were two hundred and thirty two: and after them he numbered all the people, even all the children of Israel, being seven thousand.
16 And they went out at noon. But Benhadad was drinking himself drunk in the pavilions, he and the kings, the thirty and two kings that helped him.
17 And the young men of the princes of the provinces went out first; and Benhadad sent out, and they told him, saying, There are men come out of Samaria.
18 And he said, Whether they be come out for peace, take them alive; or whether they be come out for war, take them alive.
19 So these young men of the princes of the provinces came out of the city, and the army which followed them.
20 And they slew every one his man: and the Syrians fled; and Israel pursued them: and Benhadad the king of Syria escaped on an horse with the horsemen.
21 And the king of Israel went out, and smote the horses and chariots, and slew the Syrians with a great slaughter.
22 And the prophet came to the king of Israel, and said unto him, Go, strengthen thyself, and mark, and see what thou doest: for at the return of the year the king of Syria will come up against thee.
23 And the servants of the king of Syria said unto him, Their gods are gods of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we; but let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.
24 And do this thing, Take the kings away, every man out of his place, and put captains in their rooms:
25 And number thee an army, like the army that thou hast lost, horse for horse, and chariot for chariot: and we will fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they. And he hearkened unto their voice, and did so.
26 And it came to pass at the return of the year, that Benhadad numbered the Syrians, and went up to Aphek, to fight against Israel.
27 And the children of Israel were numbered, and were all present, and went against them: and the children of Israel pitched before them like two little flocks of kids; but the Syrians filled the country.
28 And there came a man of God, and spake unto the king of Israel, and said, Thus saith the Lord, Because the Syrians have said, The Lord is God of the hills, but he is not God of the valleys, therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into thine hand, and ye shall know that I am the Lord.
29 And they pitched one over against the other seven days. And so it was, that in the seventh day the battle was joined: and the children of Israel slew of the Syrians an hundred thousand footmen in one day.
30 But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; and there a wall fell upon twenty and seven thousand of the men that were left. And Benhadad fled, and came into the city, into an inner chamber.
31 And his servants said unto him, Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings: let us, I pray thee, put sackcloth on our loins, and ropes upon our heads, and go out to the king of Israel: peradventure he will save thy life.
32 So they girded sackcloth on their loins, and put ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, Thy servant Benhadad saith, I pray thee, let me live. And he said, Is he yet alive? he is my brother.
33 Now the men did diligently observe whether any thing would come from him, and did hastily catch it: and they said, Thy brother Benhadad. Then he said, Go ye, bring him. Then Benhadad came forth to him; and he caused him to come up into the chariot.
34 And Ben-hadad said unto him, The cities, which my father took from thy father, I will restore; and thou shalt make streets for thee in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria. Then said Ahab, I will send thee away with this covenant. So he made a covenant with him, and sent him away.
35 And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said unto his neighbour in the word of the Lord, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man refused to smite him.
36 Then said he unto him, Because thou hast not obeyed the voice of the Lord, behold, as soon as thou art departed from me, a lion shall slay thee. And as soon as he was departed from him, a lion found him, and slew him.
37 Then he found another man, and said, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man smote him, so that in smiting he wounded him.
38 So the prophet departed, and waited for the king by the way, and disguised himself with ashes upon his face.
39 And as the king passed by, he cried unto the king: and he said, Thy servant went out into the midst of the battle; and, behold, a man turned aside, and brought a man unto me, and said, Keep this man: if by any means he be missing, then shall thy life be for his life, or else thou shalt pay a talent of silver.
40 And as thy servant was busy here and there, he was gone. And the king of Israel said unto him, So shall thy judgment be; thyself hast decided it.
41 And he hasted, and took the ashes away from his face; and the king of Israel discerned him that he was of the prophets.
42 And he said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Because thou hast let go out of thy hand a man whom I appointed to utter destruction, therefore thy life shall go for his life, and thy people for his people.
43 And the king of Israel went to his house heavy and displeased, and came to Samaria.

Ahab Defeats the Syrians
20 Now (A)Ben-Hadad the king of Syria gathered all his forces together; thirty-two kings were with him, with horses and chariots. And he went up and besieged (B)Samaria, and made war against it. 2 Then he sent messengers into the city to Ahab king of Israel, and said to him, “Thus says Ben-Hadad: 3 ‘Your silver and your gold are mine; your loveliest wives and children are mine.’ ”
4 And the king of Israel answered and said, “My lord, O king, just as you say, I and all that I have are yours.”
5 Then the messengers came back and said, “Thus speaks Ben-Hadad, saying, ‘Indeed I have sent to you, saying, “You shall deliver to me your silver and your gold, your wives and your children”; 6 but I will send my servants to you tomorrow about this time, and they shall search your house and the houses of your servants. And it shall be, that whatever is [a]pleasant in your eyes, they will put it in their hands and take it.’ ”
7 So the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and said, “Notice, please, and see how this man seeks trouble, for he sent to me for my wives, my children, my silver, and my gold; and I did not deny him.”
8 And all the elders and all the people said to him, “Do not listen or consent.”
9 Therefore he said to the messengers of Ben-Hadad, “Tell my lord the king, ‘All that you sent for to your servant the first time I will do, but this thing I cannot do.’ ”
And the messengers departed and brought back word to him.
10 Then Ben-Hadad sent to him and said, (C)“The gods do so to me, and more also, if enough dust is left of Samaria for a handful for each of the people [b]who follow me.”
11 So the king of Israel answered and said, “Tell him, ‘Let not the one who puts on his armor (D)boast like the one who takes it off.’ ”
12 And it happened when Ben-Hadad heard this message, as he and the kings were (E)drinking at the [c]command post, that he said to his servants, “Get ready.” And they got ready to attack the city.
13 Suddenly a prophet approached Ahab king of Israel, saying, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Have you seen all this great multitude? Behold, (F)I will deliver it into your hand today, and you shall know that I am the Lord.’ ”
14 So Ahab said, “By whom?”
And he said, “Thus says the Lord: ‘By the young leaders of the provinces.’ ”
Then he said, “Who will set the battle in order?”
And he answered, “You.”
15 Then he mustered the young leaders of the provinces, and there were two hundred and thirty-two; and after them he mustered all the people, all the children of Israel—seven thousand.
16 So they went out at noon. Meanwhile Ben-Hadad and the thirty-two kings helping him were (G)getting drunk at the command post. 17 The young leaders of the provinces went out first. And Ben-Hadad sent out a patrol, and they told him, saying, “Men are coming out of Samaria!” 18 So he said, “If they have come out for peace, take them alive; and if they have come out for war, take them alive.”
19 Then these young leaders of the provinces went out of the city with the army which followed them. 20 And each one killed his man; so the Syrians fled, and Israel pursued them; and Ben-Hadad the king of Syria escaped on a horse with the cavalry. 21 Then the king of Israel went out and attacked the horses and chariots, and killed the Syrians with a great slaughter.
22 And the prophet came to the king of Israel and said to him, “Go, strengthen yourself; take note, and see what you should do, (H)for [d]in the spring of the year the king of Syria will come up against you.”
The Syrians Again Defeated
23 Then the servants of the king of Syria said to him, “Their gods are gods of the hills. Therefore they were stronger than we; but if we fight against them in the plain, surely we will be stronger than they. 24 So do this thing: Dismiss the kings, each from his position, and put captains in their [e]places; 25 and you shall muster an army like the army [f]that you have lost, horse for horse and chariot for chariot. Then we will fight against them in the plain; surely we will be stronger than they.”
And he listened to their voice and did so.
26 So it was, in the spring of the year, that Ben-Hadad mustered the Syrians and went up to (I)Aphek to fight against Israel. 27 And the children of Israel were mustered and given provisions, and they went against them. Now the children of Israel encamped before them like two little flocks of goats, while the Syrians filled the (J)countryside.
28 Then a (K)man of God came and spoke to the king of Israel, and said, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Because the Syrians have said, “The Lord is God of the hills, but He is not God of the valleys,” therefore (L)I will deliver all this great multitude into your hand, and you shall know that I am the Lord.’ ” 29 And they encamped opposite each other for seven days. So it was that on the seventh day the battle was joined; and the children of Israel killed one hundred thousand foot soldiers of the Syrians in one day. 30 But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; then a wall fell on twenty-seven thousand of the men who were left.
And Ben-Hadad fled and went into the city, into an inner chamber.
Ahab’s Treaty with Ben-Hadad
31 Then his servants said to him, “Look now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings. Please, let us (M)put sackcloth around our waists and ropes around our heads, and go out to the king of Israel; perhaps he will spare your life.” 32 So they wore sackcloth around their waists and put ropes around their heads, and came to the king of Israel and said, “Your servant Ben-Hadad says, ‘Please let me live.’ ”
And he said, “Is he still alive? He is my brother.”
33 Now the men were watching closely to see whether any sign of mercy would come from him; and they quickly grasped at this word and said, “Your brother Ben-Hadad.”
So he said, “Go, bring him.” Then Ben-Hadad came out to him; and he had him come up into the chariot.
34 So Ben-Hadad said to him, (N)“The cities which my father took from your father I will restore; and you may set up marketplaces for yourself in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria.”
Then Ahab said, “I will send you away with this treaty.” So he made a treaty with him and sent him away.
Ahab Condemned
35 Now a certain man of (O)the sons of the prophets said to his neighbor (P)by the word of the Lord, “Strike me, please.” And the man refused to strike him. 36 Then he said to him, “Because you have not obeyed the voice of the Lord, surely, as soon as you depart from me, a lion shall kill you.” And as soon as he left him, (Q)a lion found him and killed him.
37 And he found another man, and said, “Strike me, please.” So the man struck him, inflicting a wound. 38 Then the prophet departed and waited for the king by the road, and disguised himself with a bandage over his eyes. 39 Now (R)as the king passed by, he cried out to the king and said, “Your servant went out into the midst of the battle; and there, a man came over and brought a man to me, and said, ‘Guard this man; if by any means he is missing, (S)your life shall be for his life, or else you shall [g]pay a talent of silver.’ 40 While your servant was busy here and there, he was gone.”
Then the king of Israel said to him, “So shall your judgment be; you yourself have decided it.”
41 And he hastened to take the bandage away from his eyes; and the king of Israel recognized him as one of the prophets. 42 Then he said to him, “Thus says the Lord: (T)‘Because you have let slip out of your hand a man whom I appointed to utter destruction, therefore your life shall go for his life, and your people for his people.’ ”
43 So the king of Israel (U)went to his house sullen and displeased, and came to Samaria.
