2 David ya estaba próximo a morir, así que dio estas instrucciones a su hijo Salomón:

2 «Yo estoy a punto de ir por el camino que todo mortal transita. ¡Cobra ánimo y pórtate como hombre! 3 Cumple las órdenes del Señor tu Dios; sigue sus caminos y cumple sus estatutos, mandamientos, ordenanzas y mandatos, los cuales están escritos en la Ley de Moisés. Así prosperarás en todo lo que hagas y por dondequiera que vayas, 4 y el Señor cumplirá esta promesa que me hizo: “Si tus descendientes cuidan su conducta y me son fieles con toda el alma y de todo corazón, nunca faltará un sucesor tuyo en el trono de Israel”.

5 »Ahora bien, tú mismo sabes lo que me hizo Joab hijo de Sarvia: derramó sangre en tiempo de paz como si estuviera en guerra. Mató a Abner, hijo de Ner, y a Amasá, hijo de Jéter, los dos comandantes de los ejércitos israelitas, manchándose así su cinturón y sus sandalias. 6 Por tanto, usa la cabeza y no lo dejes llegar a viejo y morir en paz.[a]

7 »En cambio, sé bondadoso con los hijos de Barzilay de Galaad y permíteles comer en tu mesa, pues ellos me ampararon cuando huía de tu hermano Absalón.

8 »También encárgate de Simí, hijo de Guerá, ese benjamita de Bajurín que me lanzó terribles maldiciones cuando me dirigía a Majanayin. Es cierto que, cuando fue al Jordán a recibirme, le juré por el Señor que no lo condenaría a muerte. 9 Sin embargo, no tienes ya por qué perdonarle la vida. Tú eres inteligente y sabrás qué hacer con él; aunque ya está viejo, hazlo sufrir una muerte sangrienta».[b]

10 David murió y fue sepultado en la ciudad que lleva su nombre. 11 Había reinado siete años en Hebrón y treinta y tres en Jerusalén, así que en total reinó en Israel cuarenta años. 12 Lo sucedió en el trono su hijo Salomón y así se consolidó firmemente su reino.

Salomón consolida el reino

13 Adonías, hijo de Jaguit, fue a ver a Betsabé, madre de Salomón, y Betsabé le preguntó:

—¿Vienes en son de paz?

—Sí —respondió él—; 14 tengo algo que comunicarle.

—Habla —contestó ella.

15 —Como usted sabe —dijo Adonías—, el reino me pertenecía y todos los israelitas esperaban que yo llegara a ser rey. Pero ahora el reino ha pasado a mi hermano, que lo ha recibido por voluntad del Señor. 16 Pues bien, tengo una petición que hacerle; por favor, no me la niegue.

—Continúa —dijo ella.

17 —Por favor, pídale usted al rey Salomón que me dé como esposa a Abisag la sunamita; a usted no se lo negará.

18 —Muy bien —contestó Betsabé—, hablaré al rey en tu favor.

19 Betsabé fue a ver al rey Salomón para interceder en favor de Adonías. El rey se puso de pie para recibirla y se inclinó ante ella; luego se sentó en su trono y mandó que pusieran otro trono para su madre y ella se sentó a la derecha del rey.

20 —Quiero pedirte un pequeño favor —dijo ella—. Te ruego que no me lo niegues.

—Dime de qué se trata, madre mía. A ti no puedo negarte nada.

21 Ella continuó:

—Concédele a tu hermano Adonías casarse con Abisag la sunamita.

22 —Pero ¿cómo puedes pedirme semejante cosa? —respondió el rey a su madre—. Es mi hermano mayor, y cuenta con el apoyo del sacerdote Abiatar y de Joab, hijo de Sarvia. ¡Realmente me estás pidiendo que le ceda el trono!

23 Dicho esto, el rey Salomón juró por el Señor: «¡Que Dios me castigue sin piedad si no hago que Adonías pague con su vida por esa petición! 24 El Señor me ha establecido firmemente en el trono de mi padre y conforme a su promesa me ha dado una dinastía. Por tanto, tan cierto como que él vive, ¡hoy mismo Adonías morirá!».

25 Enseguida el rey Salomón dio a Benaías, hijo de Joyadá, la orden de matar a Adonías.

26 Al sacerdote Abiatar, el rey mismo ordenó: «Regresa a tus tierras en Anatot. Mereces la muerte, pero por el momento no voy a quitarte la vida, pues compartiste con David mi padre todas sus penurias y en su presencia llevaste el arca del Señor y Dios». 27 Fue así como, al destituir Salomón a Abiatar del sacerdocio del Señor, se cumplió la palabra que el Señor había pronunciado en Siló contra la familia de Elí.

28 Joab había conspirado con Adonías, aunque no con Absalón, así que al oír que Adonías había muerto, fue a refugiarse en la Tienda del Señor, agarrándose de los cuernos del altar. 29 Cuando dijeron a Salomón que Joab había huido a la Tienda del Señor y que estaba junto al altar, el rey ordenó a Benaías, hijo de Joyadá, que fuera a matarlo. 30 Benaías fue a la Tienda del Señor y dijo a Joab:

—El rey te ordena que salgas.

—¡No! —respondió Joab—. ¡De aquí solo me sacarán muerto!

Benaías fue y contó al rey lo que había dicho Joab.

31 —¡Pues dale gusto! —ordenó el rey—. ¡Mátalo y entiérralo! De ese modo me absolverás a mí y a mi familia de la sangre inocente que derramó Joab. 32 El Señor hará recaer sobre su cabeza la sangre que derramó, porque a espaldas de mi padre atacó Joab a Abner, hijo de Ner, que era comandante del ejército de Israel, y a Amasá, hijo de Jéter, que era comandante del ejército de Judá. Así mató a filo de espada a dos hombres que eran mejores y más justos que él. 33 ¡Que la culpa de esas muertes recaiga para siempre sobre la cabeza de Joab y de sus descendientes! ¡Pero que la paz del Señor permanezca para siempre con David y sus descendientes, con su linaje y su trono!

34 Benaías, hijo de Joyadá, fue y mató a Joab e hizo que lo sepultaran en su hacienda de la estepa. 35 Entonces el rey puso a Benaías, hijo de Joyadá, sobre el ejército en lugar de Joab y al sacerdote Sadoc lo puso en lugar de Abiatar. 36 Luego mandó llamar a Simí y le dijo:

—Constrúyete una casa en Jerusalén y quédate allí. No salgas a ninguna parte, 37 porque el día que salgas y cruces el arroyo de Cedrón podrás darte por muerto. Y la culpa será tuya.

38 —De acuerdo —respondió Simí al rey—. Yo estoy para servir a mi señor el rey y acataré sus órdenes.

Simí permaneció en Jerusalén por un buen tiempo, 39 pero tres años más tarde dos de sus esclavos escaparon a Gat, donde reinaba Aquis, hijo de Macá. Cuando avisaron a Simí que sus esclavos estaban en Gat, 40 aparejó su asno y se fue allá a buscarlos y traerlos de vuelta.

41 Al oír Salomón que Simí había ido de Jerusalén a Gat y había regresado, 42 lo mandó llamar y dijo:

—Yo te hice jurar por el Señor y te advertí: “El día que salgas a cualquier lugar, podrás darte por muerto”. Y tú dijiste que estabas de acuerdo y que obedecerías. 43 ¿Por qué, pues, no cumpliste con tu juramento al Señor ni obedeciste la orden que te di?

44 El rey también dijo a Simí:

—Tú bien sabes cuánto daño le hiciste a mi padre David; ahora el Señor se vengará de ti por tu maldad. 45 En cambio, yo seré bendecido y el trono de David permanecerá firme para siempre en presencia del Señor.

46 Acto seguido, el rey dio la orden a Benaías, hijo de Joyadá, y este fue y mató a Simí.

Así se consolidó el reino en manos de Salomón.

Mandato de David a Salomón

2 Llegaron los días en que David había de morir, y ordenó a Salomón su hijo, diciendo: 2 Yo sigo el camino de todos en la tierra; esfuérzate, y sé hombre. 3 Guarda los preceptos de Jehová tu Dios, andando en sus caminos, y observando sus estatutos y mandamientos, sus decretos y sus testimonios, de la manera que está escrito en la ley de Moisés, para que prosperes en todo lo que hagas y en todo aquello que emprendas; 4 para que confirme Jehová la palabra que me habló, diciendo: Si tus hijos guardaren mi camino, andando delante de mí con verdad, de todo su corazón y de toda su alma, jamás, dice, faltará a ti varón en el trono de Israel.

5 Ya sabes tú lo que me ha hecho Joab hijo de Sarvia, lo que hizo a dos generales del ejército de Israel, a Abner(A) hijo de Ner y a Amasa(B) hijo de Jeter, a los cuales él mató, derramando en tiempo de paz la sangre de guerra, y poniendo sangre de guerra en el talabarte que tenía sobre sus lomos, y en los zapatos que tenía en sus pies. 6 Tú, pues, harás conforme a tu sabiduría; no dejarás descender sus canas al Seol en paz. 7 Mas a los hijos de Barzilai(C) galaadita harás misericordia, que sean de los convidados a tu mesa; porque ellos vinieron de esta manera a mí, cuando iba huyendo de Absalón tu hermano. 8 También tienes contigo a Simei hijo de Gera, hijo de Benjamín, de Bahurim, el cual me maldijo con una maldición fuerte el día que yo iba a Mahanaim.(D) Mas él mismo descendió a recibirme al Jordán, y yo le juré por Jehová diciendo: Yo no te mataré a espada.(E) 9 Pero ahora no lo absolverás; pues hombre sabio eres, y sabes cómo debes hacer con él; y harás descender sus canas con sangre al Seol.

Muerte de David

(1 Cr. 29.26-30)

10 Y durmió David con sus padres, y fue sepultado en su ciudad. 11 Los días que reinó David sobre Israel fueron cuarenta años; siete años reinó en Hebrón, y treinta y tres años reinó en Jerusalén.(F) 12 Y se sentó Salomón en el trono de David su padre,(G) y su reino fue firme en gran manera.

Salomón afirma su reino

13 Entonces Adonías hijo de Haguit vino a Betsabé madre de Salomón; y ella le dijo: ¿Es tu venida de paz? Él respondió: Sí, de paz. 14 En seguida dijo: Una palabra tengo que decirte. Y ella dijo: Di. 15 Él dijo: Tú sabes que el reino era mío, y que todo Israel había puesto en mí su rostro para que yo reinara; mas el reino fue traspasado, y vino a ser de mi hermano, porque por Jehová era suyo. 16 Ahora yo te hago una petición; no me la niegues. Y ella le dijo: Habla. 17 Él entonces dijo: Yo te ruego que hables al rey Salomón (porque él no te lo negará), para que me dé a Abisag sunamita por mujer. 18 Y Betsabé dijo: Bien; yo hablaré por ti al rey.

19 Vino Betsabé al rey Salomón para hablarle por Adonías. Y el rey se levantó a recibirla, y se inclinó ante ella, y volvió a sentarse en su trono, e hizo traer una silla para su madre, la cual se sentó a su diestra. 20 Y ella dijo: Una pequeña petición pretendo de ti; no me la niegues. Y el rey le dijo: Pide, madre mía, que yo no te la negaré. 21 Y ella dijo: Dése Abisag sunamita por mujer a tu hermano Adonías. 22 El rey Salomón respondió y dijo a su madre: ¿Por qué pides a Abisag sunamita para Adonías? Demanda también para él el reino; porque él es mi hermano mayor, y ya tiene también al sacerdote Abiatar, y a Joab hijo de Sarvia. 23 Y el rey Salomón juró por Jehová, diciendo: Así me haga Dios y aun me añada, que contra su vida ha hablado Adonías estas palabras. 24 Ahora, pues, vive Jehová, quien me ha confirmado y me ha puesto sobre el trono de David mi padre, y quien me ha hecho casa, como me había dicho, que Adonías morirá hoy. 25 Entonces el rey Salomón envió por mano de Benaía hijo de Joiada, el cual arremetió contra él, y murió.

26 Y el rey dijo al sacerdote Abiatar: Vete a Anatot, a tus heredades, pues eres digno de muerte; pero no te mataré hoy, por cuanto has llevado el arca de Jehová el Señor delante de David mi padre,(H) y además has sido afligido en todas las cosas en que fue afligido mi padre.(I) 27 Así echó Salomón a Abiatar del sacerdocio de Jehová, para que se cumpliese la palabra de Jehová que había dicho sobre la casa de Elí en Silo.(J)

28 Y vino la noticia a Joab; porque también Joab se había adherido a Adonías, si bien no se había adherido a Absalón. Y huyó Joab al tabernáculo de Jehová, y se asió de los cuernos del altar. 29 Y se le hizo saber a Salomón que Joab había huido al tabernáculo de Jehová, y que estaba junto al altar. Entonces envió Salomón a Benaía hijo de Joiada, diciendo: Ve, y arremete contra él. 30 Y entró Benaía al tabernáculo de Jehová, y le dijo: El rey ha dicho que salgas. Y él dijo: No, sino que aquí moriré. Y Benaía volvió con esta respuesta al rey, diciendo: Así dijo Joab, y así me respondió. 31 Y el rey le dijo: Haz como él ha dicho; mátale y entiérrale, y quita de mí y de la casa de mi padre la sangre que Joab ha derramado injustamente. 32 Y Jehová hará volver su sangre sobre su cabeza; porque él ha dado muerte a dos varones más justos y mejores que él, a los cuales mató a espada sin que mi padre David supiese nada: a Abner hijo de Ner, general del ejército de Israel, y a Amasa hijo de Jeter, general del ejército de Judá. 33 La sangre, pues, de ellos recaerá sobre la cabeza de Joab, y sobre la cabeza de su descendencia para siempre; mas sobre David y sobre su descendencia, y sobre su casa y sobre su trono, habrá perpetuamente paz de parte de Jehová. 34 Entonces Benaía hijo de Joiada subió y arremetió contra él, y lo mató; y fue sepultado en su casa en el desierto. 35 Y el rey puso en su lugar a Benaía hijo de Joiada sobre el ejército, y a Sadoc puso el rey por sacerdote en lugar de Abiatar.

36 Después envió el rey e hizo venir a Simei, y le dijo: Edifícate una casa en Jerusalén y mora ahí, y no salgas de allí a una parte ni a otra; 37 porque sabe de cierto que el día que salieres y pasares el torrente de Cedrón, sin duda morirás, y tu sangre será sobre tu cabeza. 38 Y Simei dijo al rey: La palabra es buena; como el rey mi señor ha dicho, así lo hará tu siervo. Y habitó Simei en Jerusalén muchos días.

39 Pero pasados tres años, aconteció que dos siervos de Simei huyeron a Aquis hijo de Maaca, rey de Gat. Y dieron aviso a Simei, diciendo: He aquí que tus siervos están en Gat. 40 Entonces Simei se levantó y ensilló su asno y fue a Aquis en Gat, para buscar a sus siervos. Fue, pues, Simei, y trajo sus siervos de Gat. 41 Luego fue dicho a Salomón que Simei había ido de Jerusalén hasta Gat, y que había vuelto. 42 Entonces el rey envió e hizo venir a Simei, y le dijo: ¿No te hice jurar yo por Jehová, y te protesté diciendo: El día que salieres y fueres acá o allá, sabe de cierto que morirás? Y tú me dijiste: La palabra es buena, yo la obedezco. 43 ¿Por qué, pues, no guardaste el juramento de Jehová, y el mandamiento que yo te impuse? 44 Dijo además el rey a Simei: Tú sabes todo el mal, el cual tu corazón bien sabe, que cometiste contra mi padre David; Jehová, pues, ha hecho volver el mal sobre tu cabeza. 45 Y el rey Salomón será bendito, y el trono de David será firme perpetuamente delante de Jehová. 46 Entonces el rey mandó a Benaía hijo de Joiada, el cual salió y lo hirió, y murió.

Y el reino fue confirmado en la mano de Salomón.

David’s Command to Solomon

2 As David’s [a](A)time to die drew near, he commanded his son Solomon, saying, 2 “(B)I am going the way of all the earth. So (C)be strong, and [b]prove yourself a man. 3 Do your duty to the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, to [c]keep His statutes, His commandments, His ordinances, and His testimonies, (D)according to what is written in the Law of Moses, so that (E)you may succeed in all that you do and wherever you turn, 4 so that (F)the Lord may fulfill His [d]promise which He spoke regarding me, saying, ‘(G)If your sons are careful about their way, (H)to walk before Me in [e]truth with all their heart and all their soul, [f](I)you shall not be deprived of a man to occupy the throne of Israel.’

5 “Now you yourself also know what Joab the (J)son of Zeruiah did to me, what he did to the two commanders of the armies of Israel, to (K)Abner the son of Ner and to (L)Amasa the son of Jether, whom he killed; he also [g]shed the blood of war in peace. And he put the blood of war on his belt that was on his waist, and on his sandals that were on his feet. 6 (M)So act as your wisdom dictates, and do not let his gray hair go down to [h]Sheol in peace. 7 However, (N)show kindness to the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and (O)let them be among those who eat at your table; (P)for [i]they assisted me when I fled from Absalom your brother. 8 And behold, you have with you (Q)Shimei the son of Gera the Benjaminite, of Bahurim; now it was he who cursed me with a painful curse on the day I went to Mahanaim. But when (R)he came down to meet me at the Jordan, I swore to him by the Lord, saying, ‘I will not put you to death with the sword.’ 9 But now do not leave him unpunished, (S)for you are a wise man; and you will know what to do to him, and you will bring his gray hair down to [j]Sheol with blood.”

Death of David

10 Then (T)David [k]lay down with his fathers, and he was buried in (U)the city of David. 11 Now (V)the days that David reigned over Israel were forty years: in Hebron he reigned for (W)seven years, and in Jerusalem he reigned for thirty-three years. 12 Then (X)Solomon sat on the throne of his father David, and his kingdom was firmly established.

13 Now Adonijah the son of Haggith came to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon. So she said, “(Y)Do you come peacefully?” And he said, “Peacefully.” 14 Then he said, “I have something to say to you.” And she said, “Speak.” 15 So he said, “You yourself know that (Z)the kingdom was mine and (AA)that all Israel [l]intended for me to be king; (AB)however, the kingdom has turned around and become my brother’s, (AC)for it was his from the Lord. 16 So now I am making one request of you; do not [m]refuse me.” And she said to him, “Speak.” 17 Then he said, “Please speak to Solomon the king—for he will not [n]refuse you—that he may give me (AD)Abishag the Shunammite as a wife.” 18 And Bathsheba said, “Very well; I will speak to the king for you.”

Adonijah Executed

19 So Bathsheba went to King Solomon, to speak to him for Adonijah. And the king stood to meet her, bowed to her, and sat on his throne; then he (AE)had a throne set up for the king’s mother, and (AF)she sat on his right. 20 Then she said, “I am making one small request of you; (AG)do not [o]refuse me.” And the king said to her, “Ask, my mother, for I will not [p]refuse you.” 21 So she said, “(AH)Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to Adonijah your brother as a wife.” 22 But King Solomon answered and said to his mother, “And why are you requesting Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? (AI)Request for him the kingdom as well—(AJ)since he is my older brother—for him, for (AK)Abiathar the priest, and for Joab the son of Zeruiah!” 23 Then King Solomon swore by the Lord, saying, “May God do so to me and more so, if Adonijah has (AL)not spoken this word against his own [q]life! 24 Now then, as the Lord lives, who has established me and set me on the throne of David my father, and (AM)has made me a house just as He [r]promised, Adonijah certainly shall be put to death today!” 25 Then King Solomon (AN)sent the order by Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he [s]struck him so that he died.

26 Then to Abiathar the priest the king said, “(AO)Go to Anathoth to your own field, (AP)for you [t]deserve to die; but I will not put you to death at this [u]time, because (AQ)you carried the ark of the Lord [v]God before my father David, and because (AR)you were afflicted in everything with which my father was afflicted.” 27 So Solomon dismissed Abiathar from being priest to the Lord, to fulfill (AS)the word of the Lord, which He had spoken regarding the house of Eli in Shiloh.

Joab Executed

28 Now the news came to Joab (AT)because Joab had followed Adonijah, (AU)though he had not followed Absalom. So Joab fled to the tent of the Lord and (AV)took hold of the horns of the altar. 29 And it was reported to King Solomon that Joab had fled to the tent of the Lord, and [w]was beside the altar. Then Solomon (AW)sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, saying, “(AX)Go, [x]execute him.” 30 So Benaiah came to the tent of the Lord and said to him, “This is what the king has said: ‘Come out.’” But he said, “No, for I will die here.” So Benaiah brought back word to the king, saying, “This is what Joab spoke, and so he answered me.” 31 And the king said to him, “(AY)Do just as he has spoken, and [y]execute him and bury him, (AZ)so that you may remove from me and from my father’s house the blood which Joab shed without [z]justification. 32 (BA)The Lord will return his blood on his own head, (BB)because he [aa]struck two men more righteous and better than he, and killed them with the sword, while my father David did not know about it: (BC)Abner the son of Ner, commander of the army of Israel, and (BD)Amasa the son of Jether, commander of the army of Judah. 33 (BE)So their blood shall return on the head of Joab and on the head of his [ab]descendants forever; but for David and his [ac]descendants, and his house and his throne, may there be peace from the Lord forever.” 34 Then (BF)Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up and [ad]struck him and put him to death, and he was buried at his own house (BG)in the wilderness. 35 And (BH)the king appointed Benaiah the son of Jehoiada over the army in his place, and the king appointed (BI)Zadok the priest (BJ)in place of Abiathar.

Shimei Executed

36 Now the king sent men and summoned (BK)Shimei, and said to him, “Build yourself a house in Jerusalem and live there, and do not leave there for any other place. 37 For on the day you leave and (BL)cross the [ae]brook Kidron, you will know for certain that you will assuredly die; (BM)your blood will be [af]on your own head.” 38 Shimei then said to the king, “The word is good. Just as my lord the king has spoken, so your servant shall do.” So Shimei lived in Jerusalem for many days.

39 But it came about at the end of three years, that two of Shimei’s servants ran away (BN)to Achish son of Maacah, king of Gath. And others told Shimei, saying, “Behold, your servants are in Gath.” 40 Then Shimei got up and saddled his donkey, and went to Gath to Achish, to search for his servants. And Shimei went and brought his servants from Gath. 41 And it was reported to Solomon that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath, and had returned. 42 So the king sent men and summoned Shimei, and said to him, “Did I not make you swear by the Lord, and solemnly warn you, saying, ‘Know for certain that on the day you depart and go anywhere, you shall assuredly die’? And you said to me, ‘The word I have heard is good.’ 43 Why then have you not kept the oath of the Lord, and the command which I [ag]imposed on you?” 44 The king also said to Shimei, “(BO)You yourself know all the evil that [ah]you acknowledge in your heart, which you did to my father David; therefore (BP)the Lord will return your evil on your own head. 45 But King Solomon will be blessed, and (BQ)the throne of David will be established before the Lord forever.” 46 (BR)So the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and he went out and [ai]struck him so that he died.

(BS)And the kingdom was established in the hands of Solomon.
