Elías huye a Horeb
19 Acab le contó a Jezabel todo lo que Elías había hecho, y cómo había matado a todos los profetas a filo de espada. 2 Entonces Jezabel envió un mensajero a Elías para decirle: «¡Que los dioses me castiguen sin piedad si mañana a esta hora no te he quitado la vida como tú se la quitaste a ellos!»
3 Elías se asustó[a] y huyó para ponerse a salvo. Cuando llegó a Berseba de Judá, dejó allí a su criado 4 y caminó todo un día por el desierto. Llegó adonde había un arbusto,[b] y se sentó a su sombra con ganas de morirse. «¡Estoy harto, Señor! —protestó—. Quítame la vida, pues no soy mejor que mis antepasados». 5 Luego se acostó debajo del arbusto y se quedó dormido.
De repente, un ángel lo tocó y le dijo: «Levántate y come». 6 Elías miró a su alrededor y vio a su cabecera un panecillo cocido sobre carbones calientes y un jarro de agua. Comió y bebió, y volvió a acostarse.
7 El ángel del Señor regresó y, tocándolo, le dijo: «Levántate y come, porque te espera un largo viaje». 8 Elías se levantó, y comió y bebió. Una vez fortalecido por aquella comida, viajó cuarenta días y cuarenta noches hasta que llegó a Horeb, el monte de Dios. 9 Allí pasó la noche en una cueva.
El Señor se le aparece a Elías
Más tarde, la palabra del Señor vino a él.
―¿Qué haces aquí, Elías? —le preguntó.
10 ―Me consume mi amor[c] por ti, Señor Dios Todopoderoso —respondió él—. Los israelitas han rechazado tu pacto, han derribado tus altares, y a tus profetas los han matado a filo de espada. Yo soy el único que ha quedado con vida, ¡y ahora quieren matarme a mí también!
11 El Señor le ordenó:
―Sal y preséntate ante mí en la montaña, porque estoy a punto de pasar por allí.
Como heraldo del Señor vino un viento recio, tan violento que partió las montañas e hizo añicos las rocas; pero el Señor no estaba en el viento. Después del viento hubo un terremoto, pero el Señor tampoco estaba en el terremoto. 12 Tras el terremoto vino un fuego, pero el Señor tampoco estaba en el fuego. Y después del fuego vino un suave murmullo. 13 Cuando Elías lo oyó, se cubrió el rostro con el manto y, saliendo, se puso a la entrada de la cueva.
Entonces oyó una voz que le dijo:
―¿Qué haces aquí, Elías?
14 Él respondió:
―Me consume mi amor por ti, Señor Dios Todopoderoso. Los israelitas han rechazado tu pacto, han derribado tus altares, y a tus profetas los han matado a filo de espada. Yo soy el único que ha quedado con vida, ¡y ahora quieren matarme a mí también!
15 El Señor le dijo:
―Regresa por el mismo camino y ve al desierto de Damasco. Cuando llegues allí, unge a Jazael como rey de Siria, 16 y a Jehú hijo de Nimsi como rey de Israel; unge también a Eliseo hijo de Safat, de Abel Mejolá, para que te suceda como profeta. 17 Jehú dará muerte a cualquiera que escape de la espada de Jazael, y Eliseo dará muerte a cualquiera que escape de la espada de Jehú. 18 Sin embargo, yo preservaré a siete mil israelitas que no se han arrodillado ante Baal ni lo han besado.
El llamamiento de Eliseo
19 Elías salió de allí y encontró a Eliseo hijo de Safat, que estaba arando. Había doce yuntas de bueyes en fila, y él mismo conducía la última. Elías pasó junto a Eliseo y arrojó su manto sobre él. 20 Entonces Eliseo dejó sus bueyes y corrió tras Elías.
―Permíteme despedirme de mi padre y de mi madre con un beso —dijo él—, y luego te seguiré.
―Anda, ve —respondió Elías—. Yo no te lo voy a impedir.[d]
21 Eliseo lo dejó y regresó. Tomó su yunta de bueyes y los sacrificó. Quemando la madera de la yunta, asó la carne y se la dio al pueblo, y ellos comieron. Luego partió para seguir a Elías y se puso a su servicio.

19 Acab dio a Jezabel la nueva de todo lo que Elías había hecho, y de cómo había matado a espada a todos los profetas. 2 Entonces envió Jezabel a Elías un mensajero, diciendo: Así me hagan los dioses, y aun me añadan, si mañana a estas horas yo no he puesto tu persona como la de uno de ellos. 3 Viendo, pues, el peligro, se levantó y se fue para salvar su vida, y vino a Beerseba, que está en Judá, y dejó allí a su criado.
4 Y él se fue por el desierto un día de camino, y vino y se sentó debajo de un enebro; y deseando morirse, dijo: Basta ya, oh Jehová, quítame la vida, pues no soy yo mejor que mis padres. 5 Y echándose debajo del enebro, se quedó dormido; y he aquí luego un ángel le tocó, y le dijo: Levántate, come. 6 Entonces él miró, y he aquí a su cabecera una torta cocida sobre las ascuas, y una vasija de agua; y comió y bebió, y volvió a dormirse. 7 Y volviendo el ángel de Jehová la segunda vez, lo tocó, diciendo: Levántate y come, porque largo camino te resta. 8 Se levantó, pues, y comió y bebió; y fortalecido con aquella comida caminó cuarenta días y cuarenta noches hasta Horeb, el monte de Dios.
9 Y allí se metió en una cueva, donde pasó la noche. Y vino a él palabra de Jehová, el cual le dijo: ¿Qué haces aquí, Elías? 10 Él respondió: He sentido un vivo celo por Jehová Dios de los ejércitos; porque los hijos de Israel han dejado tu pacto, han derribado tus altares, y han matado a espada a tus profetas; y sólo yo he quedado, y me buscan para quitarme la vida.(A) 11 Él le dijo: Sal fuera, y ponte en el monte delante de Jehová. Y he aquí Jehová que pasaba, y un grande y poderoso viento que rompía los montes, y quebraba las peñas delante de Jehová; pero Jehová no estaba en el viento. Y tras el viento un terremoto; pero Jehová no estaba en el terremoto. 12 Y tras el terremoto un fuego; pero Jehová no estaba en el fuego. Y tras el fuego un silbo apacible y delicado. 13 Y cuando lo oyó Elías, cubrió su rostro con su manto, y salió, y se puso a la puerta de la cueva. Y he aquí vino a él una voz, diciendo: ¿Qué haces aquí, Elías? 14 Él respondió: He sentido un vivo celo por Jehová Dios de los ejércitos; porque los hijos de Israel han dejado tu pacto, han derribado tus altares, y han matado a espada a tus profetas; y sólo yo he quedado, y me buscan para quitarme la vida.(B) 15 Y le dijo Jehová: Ve, vuélvete por tu camino, por el desierto de Damasco; y llegarás, y ungirás a Hazael por rey de Siria.(C) 16 A Jehú hijo de Nimsi ungirás por rey sobre Israel;(D) y a Eliseo hijo de Safat, de Abel-mehola, ungirás para que sea profeta en tu lugar. 17 Y el que escapare de la espada de Hazael, Jehú lo matará; y el que escapare de la espada de Jehú, Eliseo lo matará. 18 Y yo haré que queden en Israel siete mil, cuyas rodillas no se doblaron ante Baal,(E) y cuyas bocas no lo besaron.
Llamamiento de Eliseo
19 Partiendo él de allí, halló a Eliseo hijo de Safat, que araba con doce yuntas delante de sí, y él tenía la última. Y pasando Elías por delante de él, echó sobre él su manto. 20 Entonces dejando él los bueyes, vino corriendo en pos de Elías, y dijo: Te ruego que me dejes besar a mi padre y a mi madre, y luego te seguiré. Y él le dijo: Ve, vuelve; ¿qué te he hecho yo? 21 Y se volvió, y tomó un par de bueyes y los mató, y con el arado de los bueyes coció la carne, y la dio al pueblo para que comiesen. Después se levantó y fue tras Elías, y le servía.

Elijah Escapes from Jezebel
19 And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, also how he had (A)executed all the prophets with the sword. 2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, (B)“So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time.” 3 And when he saw that, he arose and ran for his life, and went to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.
4 But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a [a]broom tree. And he (C)prayed that he might die, and said, “It is enough! Now, Lord, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers!”
5 Then as he lay and slept under a broom tree, suddenly an [b]angel touched him, and said to him, “Arise and eat.” 6 Then he looked, and there by his head was a cake baked on [c]coals, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank, and lay down again. 7 And the [d]angel of the Lord came back the second time, and touched him, and said, “Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you.” 8 So he arose, and ate and drank; and he went in the strength of that food forty days and (D)forty nights as far as (E)Horeb, the mountain of God.
9 And there he went into a cave, and spent the night in that place; and behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and He said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
10 So he said, (F)“I have been very (G)zealous for the Lord God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and (H)killed Your prophets with the sword. (I)I alone am left; and they seek to take my life.”
God’s Revelation to Elijah
11 Then He said, “Go out, and stand (J)on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord (K)passed by, and (L)a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; 12 and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire [e]a still small voice.
13 So it was, when Elijah heard it, that (M)he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. (N)Suddenly a voice came to him, and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
14 (O)And he said, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God of hosts; because the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left; and they seek to take my life.”
15 Then the Lord said to him: “Go, return on your way to the Wilderness of Damascus; (P)and when you arrive, anoint Hazael as king over Syria. 16 Also you shall anoint (Q)Jehu the son of Nimshi as king over Israel. And (R)Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel Meholah you shall anoint as prophet in your place. 17 (S)It shall be that whoever escapes the sword of Hazael, Jehu will (T)kill; and whoever escapes the sword of Jehu, (U)Elisha will kill. 18 (V)Yet I have reserved seven thousand in Israel, all whose knees have not bowed to Baal, (W)and every mouth that has not kissed him.”
Elisha Follows Elijah
19 So he departed from there, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he was with the twelfth. Then Elijah passed by him and threw his (X)mantle on him. 20 And he left the oxen and ran after Elijah, and said, (Y)“Please let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you.”
And he said to him, “Go back again, for what have I done to you?”
21 So Elisha turned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen and slaughtered them and (Z)boiled their flesh, using the oxen’s equipment, and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he arose and followed Elijah, and became his servant.
