Encuentro de Elías y Acab
18 Después de muchos días, la palabra del Señor vino a Elías en el tercer año(A), diciéndole: «Ve, muéstrate a Acab, y enviaré lluvia sobre la superficie de la tierra(B)». 2 Y Elías fue a mostrarse a Acab. Y el hambre era intensa en Samaria. 3 Y Acab llamó a Abdías que era mayordomo de la casa(C). (Y Abdías temía[a] en gran manera al Señor(D); 4 pues cuando Jezabel destruyó[b] a los profetas del Señor(E), Abdías tomó a cien profetas y los escondió de cincuenta en cincuenta en una cueva, y los sustentó(F) con pan y agua). 5 Entonces Acab dijo a Abdías: «Ve por la tierra a todas las fuentes de agua y a todos los valles; quizá hallaremos hierba y conservaremos con vida los caballos y los mulos, y no tendremos que matar parte del ganado». 6 Y dividieron la tierra entre ellos para recorrerla; Acab se fue solo por un camino, y Abdías se fue solo por otro.
7 Abdías estaba en el camino cuando Elías le salió al encuentro, y Abdías lo reconoció(G) y cayó sobre su rostro, y le dijo: «¿Es usted Elías, mi señor?». 8 Él le respondió: «Yo soy. Ve, dile a tu señor: “Aquí está Elías”». 9 Y él dijo: «¿Qué pecado he cometido, que entrega a su siervo en manos de Acab para que me mate? 10 Vive el Señor su Dios(H), que no hay nación ni reino adonde mi señor no haya enviado a buscarlo; y cuando decían: “No está aquí”, hacía jurar al reino o a la nación que no lo habían hallado. 11 Y ahora dices: “Ve, dile a tu señor: ‘Aquí está Elías’”. 12 Y sucederá que cuando lo deje, el Espíritu del Señor(I) lo llevará adonde yo no sepa; así que cuando yo vaya y se lo diga a Acab y él no pueda encontrarlo, me matará, aunque yo su siervo he temido[c] al Señor desde mi juventud. 13 ¿No le han contado a mi señor lo que hice cuando Jezabel mató a los profetas del Señor, que escondí a cien de los profetas del Señor de cincuenta en cincuenta en una cueva, y los sustenté con pan y agua(J)? 14 Y ahora usted me dice: “Ve, dile a tu señor: ‘Aquí está Elías’”; entonces me matará». 15 Elías le dijo: «Vive el Señor de los ejércitos(K), delante de quien estoy, que hoy ciertamente me mostraré a él».
16 Abdías fue al encuentro de Acab, y le dio aviso; y Acab fue al encuentro de Elías. 17 Cuando Acab vio a Elías, Acab le dijo(L): «¿Eres tú, perturbador de Israel?». 18 Y él respondió: «Yo no he perturbado a Israel, sino tú y la casa de tu padre, porque ustedes han abandonado los mandamientos del Señor(M) y han seguido a los Baales(N). 19 Ahora pues, envía a reunir conmigo a todo Israel en el monte Carmelo(O), junto con 450 profetas de Baal(P) y 400 profetas de la Asera(Q) que comen a la mesa de Jezabel».
Elías y los profetas de Baal
20 Acab envió mensaje a todos los israelitas y reunió a los profetas en el monte Carmelo. 21 Elías se acercó a todo el pueblo y dijo: «¿Hasta cuándo vacilarán entre[d] dos opiniones(R)? Si el Señor es Dios, síganlo(S); y si Baal, síganlo a él». Pero el pueblo no le respondió ni una palabra. 22 Entonces Elías dijo al pueblo: «Solo yo he quedado como profeta del Señor(T), pero los profetas de Baal son 450 hombres(U). 23 Que nos den, pues, dos novillos. Que escojan un novillo para ellos y lo despedacen, y lo coloquen sobre la leña, pero que no le pongan fuego debajo; y yo prepararé el otro novillo y lo colocaré sobre la leña, y no le pondré fuego. 24 Entonces invoquen el nombre de su dios, y yo invocaré el nombre del Señor; y el Dios que responda por fuego, ese es Dios(V)». Y todo el pueblo respondió: «La idea es buena».
25 Y Elías dijo a los profetas de Baal: «Escojan un novillo para ustedes y prepárenlo primero, pues son los más, e invoquen el nombre de su dios, pero no le pongan fuego». 26 Entonces tomaron el novillo que les dieron y lo prepararon, e invocaron el nombre de Baal desde la mañana hasta el mediodía, diciendo: «Oh Baal, respóndenos». Pero no hubo voz(W) ni nadie respondió. Y danzaban[e] alrededor del altar que habían hecho[f]. 27 Como al mediodía, Elías se burlaba de ellos y decía: «Clamen en voz alta, pues es un dios; tal vez estará meditando o se habrá desviado, o estará de viaje, quizá esté dormido y habrá que despertarlo». 28 Y gritaban a grandes voces y se sajaban, según su costumbre(X), con espadas y lanzas hasta que la sangre chorreaba sobre ellos. 29 Pasado el mediodía, se pusieron a gritar frenéticamente[g] hasta la hora de ofrecerse el sacrificio de la tarde(Y); pero no hubo voz, ni nadie respondió ni nadie hizo caso.
30 Entonces Elías dijo a todo el pueblo: «Acérquense a mí». Y todo el pueblo se acercó a Elías. Entonces él reparó el altar del Señor que había sido derribado(Z). 31 Elías tomó doce piedras conforme al número de las tribus de los hijos de Jacob, a quien había venido la palabra del Señor, diciendo: «Israel será tu nombre(AA)». 32 Con las piedras edificó un altar en el nombre del Señor(AB), e hizo una zanja alrededor del altar, suficientemente grande para contener dos medidas (14.6 litros) de semilla. 33 Dispuso después la leña, cortó el novillo en pedazos y lo colocó sobre la leña(AC). 34 Y dijo: «Llenen cuatro cántaros de agua y derrámenla sobre el holocausto y sobre la leña». Después dijo: «Háganlo por segunda vez; y lo hicieron por segunda vez». Y añadió: «Háganlo por tercera vez»; y lo hicieron por tercera vez. 35 El agua corría alrededor del altar, y también llenó la zanja de agua. 36 Y a la hora de ofrecerse el sacrificio de la tarde(AD), el profeta Elías se acercó y dijo: «Oh Señor, Dios de Abraham, de Isaac y de Israel(AE), que se sepa hoy que Tú eres Dios en Israel(AF), que yo soy Tu siervo y que he hecho todas estas cosas por palabra Tuya(AG). 37 Respóndeme, oh Señor, respóndeme, para que este pueblo sepa que Tú, oh Señor, eres Dios, y que has hecho volver sus corazones». 38 Entonces cayó el fuego del Señor, y consumió el holocausto(AH), la leña, las piedras y el polvo, y secó el agua de la zanja. 39 Cuando todo el pueblo lo vio, se postraron sobre su rostro y dijeron: «El Señor, Él es Dios(AI); el Señor, Él es Dios». 40 Entonces Elías les dijo: «Prendan a los profetas de Baal, que no se escape ninguno de ellos». Los prendieron, y Elías los hizo bajar al torrente Cisón(AJ) y allí los degolló(AK).
Fin de la sequía
41 Y Elías dijo a Acab: «Sube, come y bebe; porque se oye el estruendo de mucha lluvia». 42 Acab subió a comer y a beber, pero Elías subió a la cumbre del Carmelo(AL); y allí se agachó en tierra(AM) y puso su rostro entre las rodillas. 43 Y dijo a su criado: «Sube ahora, y mira hacia el mar». Y él subió, miró y dijo: «No hay nada». Y Elías dijo siete veces: «Vuelve a mirar». 44 Y sucedió que a la séptima vez, él dijo: «Veo una nube(AN) tan pequeña como la mano de un hombre, que sube del mar». Y Elías le dijo: «Sube, y dile a Acab: “Prepara[h] tu carro y desciende, para que la fuerte lluvia no te detenga”». 45 Al poco tiempo, el cielo se oscureció con nubes y viento, y hubo gran lluvia. Y Acab montó en su carro y fue a Jezreel(AO). 46 Y la mano del Señor estaba sobre Elías(AP), quien ajustándose el cinturón(AQ) corrió delante de Acab hasta Jezreel.

Elijah and Obadiah
18 After a long time, in the third(A) year, the word of the Lord came to Elijah: “Go and present(B) yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain(C) on the land.” 2 So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab.
Now the famine was severe(D) in Samaria, 3 and Ahab had summoned Obadiah, his palace administrator.(E) (Obadiah was a devout believer(F) in the Lord. 4 While Jezebel(G) was killing off the Lord’s prophets, Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden(H) them in two caves, fifty in each, and had supplied(I) them with food and water.) 5 Ahab had said to Obadiah, “Go through the land to all the springs(J) and valleys. Maybe we can find some grass to keep the horses and mules alive so we will not have to kill any of our animals.”(K) 6 So they divided the land they were to cover, Ahab going in one direction and Obadiah in another.
7 As Obadiah was walking along, Elijah met him. Obadiah recognized(L) him, bowed down to the ground, and said, “Is it really you, my lord Elijah?”
8 “Yes,” he replied. “Go tell your master, ‘Elijah is here.’”
9 “What have I done wrong,” asked Obadiah, “that you are handing your servant over to Ahab to be put to death? 10 As surely as the Lord your God lives, there is not a nation or kingdom where my master has not sent someone to look(M) for you. And whenever a nation or kingdom claimed you were not there, he made them swear they could not find you. 11 But now you tell me to go to my master and say, ‘Elijah is here.’ 12 I don’t know where the Spirit(N) of the Lord may carry you when I leave you. If I go and tell Ahab and he doesn’t find you, he will kill me. Yet I your servant have worshiped the Lord since my youth. 13 Haven’t you heard, my lord, what I did while Jezebel was killing the prophets of the Lord? I hid a hundred of the Lord’s prophets in two caves, fifty in each, and supplied them with food and water. 14 And now you tell me to go to my master and say, ‘Elijah is here.’ He will kill me!”
15 Elijah said, “As the Lord Almighty lives, whom I serve, I will surely present(O) myself to Ahab today.”
Elijah on Mount Carmel
16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him, and Ahab went to meet Elijah. 17 When he saw Elijah, he said to him, “Is that you, you troubler(P) of Israel?”
18 “I have not made trouble for Israel,” Elijah replied. “But you(Q) and your father’s family have. You have abandoned(R) the Lord’s commands and have followed the Baals. 19 Now summon(S) the people from all over Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel.(T) And bring the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”(U)
20 So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel.(V) 21 Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver(W) between two opinions? If the Lord(X) is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.”
But the people said nothing.
22 Then Elijah said to them, “I am the only one of the Lord’s prophets left,(Y) but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets.(Z) 23 Get two bulls for us. Let Baal’s prophets choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. 24 Then you call(AA) on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord.(AB) The god who answers by fire(AC)—he is God.”
Then all the people said, “What you say is good.”
25 Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one of the bulls and prepare it first, since there are so many of you. Call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire.” 26 So they took the bull given them and prepared it.
Then they called(AD) on the name of Baal from morning till noon. “Baal, answer us!” they shouted. But there was no response;(AE) no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made.
27 At noon Elijah began to taunt them. “Shout louder!” he said. “Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.”(AF) 28 So they shouted louder and slashed(AG) themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed. 29 Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice.(AH) But there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention.(AI)
30 Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come here to me.” They came to him, and he repaired the altar(AJ) of the Lord, which had been torn down. 31 Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes descended from Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying, “Your name shall be Israel.”(AK) 32 With the stones he built an altar in the name(AL) of the Lord, and he dug a trench around it large enough to hold two seahs[a] of seed. 33 He arranged(AM) the wood, cut the bull into pieces and laid it on the wood. Then he said to them, “Fill four large jars with water and pour it on the offering and on the wood.”
34 “Do it again,” he said, and they did it again.
“Do it a third time,” he ordered, and they did it the third time. 35 The water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.
36 At the time(AN) of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: “Lord, the God of Abraham,(AO) Isaac and Israel, let it be known(AP) today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command.(AQ) 37 Answer me, Lord, answer me, so these people will know(AR) that you, Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.”
38 Then the fire(AS) of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.
39 When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate(AT) and cried, “The Lord—he is God! The Lord—he is God!”(AU)
40 Then Elijah commanded them, “Seize the prophets of Baal. Don’t let anyone get away!” They seized them, and Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley(AV) and slaughtered(AW) there.
41 And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.” 42 So Ahab went off to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees.(AX)
43 “Go and look toward the sea,” he told his servant. And he went up and looked.
“There is nothing there,” he said.
Seven times Elijah said, “Go back.”
44 The seventh time(AY) the servant reported, “A cloud(AZ) as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea.”
So Elijah said, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.’”
45 Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain(BA) started falling and Ahab rode off to Jezreel.(BB) 46 The power(BC) of the Lord came on Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt,(BD) he ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.

18 Und es geschah nach vielen Tagen, im dritten Jahr, da erging das Wort des Herrn an Elia: Geh hin, zeige dich Ahab, und ich will es regnen lassen auf den Erdboden!
2 Und Elia ging hin, um sich Ahab zu zeigen. Es war aber eine große Hungersnot in Samaria.
3 Und Ahab rief Obadja, seinen Verwalter[a]. Obadja aber fürchtete den Herrn sehr.
4 Denn es geschah, als Isebel die Propheten des Herrn ausrottete, da nahm Obadja 100 Propheten und verbarg sie in Höhlen, hier 50 und dort 50, und versorgte sie mit Brot und Wasser.
5 So sprach nun Ahab zu Obadja: Zieh durch das Land, zu allen Wasserquellen und zu allen Bächen[b]; vielleicht finden wir Gras, um die Pferde und Maultiere am Leben zu erhalten, sodass wir nichts von dem Vieh umkommen lassen müssen!
6 Und sie teilten das Land unter sich auf, um es zu durchziehen. Ahab zog allein auf einem Weg, und Obadja auch allein auf einem anderen Weg.
7 Als nun Obadja auf dem Weg war, siehe, da begegnete ihm Elia. Und als er ihn erkannte, fiel er auf sein Angesicht und sprach: Bist du es, mein Herr Elia?
8 Er sprach zu ihm: Ich bin’s! Geh hin und sage deinem Herrn: Siehe, Elia ist hier!
9 Er aber sprach: Was habe ich gesündigt, dass du deinen Knecht in die Hand Ahabs geben willst, damit er mich tötet?
10 So wahr der Herr, dein Gott, lebt, es gibt kein Volk, noch Königreich, in das mein Herr nicht gesandt hätte, um dich zu suchen. Und wenn sie sagten: »Er ist nicht hier«, so nahm er einen Eid von jenem Königreich und von jenem Volk, dass man dich nicht gefunden habe.
11 Und du sprichst nun: Geh hin, sage deinem Herrn: Siehe, Elia ist hier!
12 Wenn ich von dir weggehe, dann könnte es geschehen, dass dich der Geist des Herrn hinwegnimmt, ich weiß nicht wohin; und wenn ich dann komme und es Ahab berichte, und er findet dich nicht, so wird er mich töten; und dein Knecht fürchtet doch den Herrn von Jugend auf!
13 Ist meinem Herrn nicht berichtet worden, was ich getan habe, als Isebel die Propheten des Herrn tötete, dass ich von den Propheten des Herrn 100 Männer verbarg, hier 50 und dort 50, in Höhlen, und sie mit Brot und Wasser versorgte?
14 Und du sprichst nun: Geh hin, sage deinem Herrn: Siehe, Elia ist hier! Er wird mich ja töten!
15 Elia aber sprach: So wahr der Herr der Heerscharen lebt, vor dem ich stehe, ich werde mich ihm heute zeigen!
Elia und die Baalspropheten auf dem Berg Karmel
16 Da ging Obadja hin, Ahab entgegen, und berichtete es ihm; Ahab aber kam Elia entgegen.
17 Und als Ahab den Elia sah, sprach Ahab zu ihm: Bist du da, der Israel ins Unglück bringt?
18 Er aber sprach: Nicht ich bringe Israel ins Unglück, sondern du und das Haus deines Vaters, weil ihr die Gebote des Herrn verlassen habt und du den Baalen nachgefolgt bist!
19 Wohlan, so sende nun hin und versammle zu mir ganz Israel auf den Berg Karmel, dazu die 450 Propheten des Baal und die 400 Propheten der Aschera, die am Tisch der Isebel essen!
20 So sandte Ahab Boten zu allen Kindern Israels und versammelte die Propheten auf dem Berg Karmel.
21 Da trat Elia vor das ganze Volk und sprach: Wie lange wollt ihr auf beiden Seiten hinken? Ist der Herr Gott[c], so folgt ihm nach, ist es aber Baal, so folgt ihm! Und das Volk erwiderte ihm kein Wort.
22 Da sprach Elia zum Volk: Ich bin allein übrig geblieben als Prophet des Herrn, die Propheten Baals aber sind 450 Mann.
23 So gebt uns nun zwei Jungstiere, und lasst sie den einen Jungstier erwählen und ihn in Stücke zerteilen und auf das Holz legen und kein Feuer daran legen; so will ich den anderen Jungstier zubereiten und auf das Holz legen und auch kein Feuer daran legen.
24 Dann sollt ihr den Namen eures Gottes anrufen, und ich will den Namen des Herrn anrufen. Und der Gott, der mit Feuer antworten wird, der sei der [wahre] Gott! Da antwortete das ganze Volk und sprach: Das Wort ist gut!
25 Und Elia sprach zu den Propheten Baals: Erwählt euch den einen Jungstier und bereitet ihn zuerst zu, denn ihr seid viele, und ruft den Namen eures Gottes an, aber legt kein Feuer daran!
26 Und sie nahmen den Jungstier, den man ihnen gab, und bereiteten ihn zu; und sie riefen den Namen Baals an vom Morgen bis zum Mittag und sprachen: Baal, erhöre uns! Aber da war keine Stimme noch Antwort. Und sie hüpften um den Altar, den man gemacht hatte.
27 Als es nun Mittag war, spottete Elia über sie und sprach: Ruft laut! denn er ist ja ein Gott; vielleicht denkt er nach oder er ist beiseitegegangen oder ist auf Reisen, oder er schläft vielleicht und wird aufwachen!
28 Und sie riefen laut und machten sich Einschnitte nach ihrer Weise mit Schwertern und Spießen, bis das Blut an ihnen herabfloss.
29 Als aber der Mittag vergangen war, weissagten sie, bis es Zeit war, das Speisopfer darzubringen;[d] aber da war keine Stimme noch Antwort noch Aufhorchen.
30 Da sprach Elia zu dem ganzen Volk: Tretet heran zu mir! Als nun das ganze Volk zu ihm trat, stellte er den Altar des Herrn, der niedergerissen war, wieder her.
31 Und Elia nahm zwölf Steine, nach der Zahl der Stämme der Söhne Jakobs, an den das Wort des Herrn ergangen war: »Du sollst Israel heißen!«
32 Und er baute aus den Steinen einen Altar im Namen des Herrn und machte um den Altar her einen Graben so breit wie für zwei Kornmaß Aussaat;[e]
33 und er richtete das Holz zu und zerteilte den Jungstier in Stücke und legte ihn auf das Holz,
34 und er sprach: Füllt vier Krüge mit Wasser und gießt es auf das Brandopfer und auf das Holz! Und er sprach: Tut es noch einmal! Und sie taten es noch einmal. Und er sprach: Tut es zum dritten Mal! Und sie taten es zum dritten Mal.
35 Und das Wasser lief rings um den Altar, und auch den Graben füllte er mit Wasser.
36 Und es geschah um die Zeit, da man das Speisopfer darbringt, da trat der Prophet Elia herzu und sprach: O Herr, du Gott Abrahams, Isaaks und Israels, lass [sie] heute erkennen, dass du Gott in Israel bist und ich dein Knecht, und dass ich dies alles nach deinem Wort getan habe!
37 Erhöre mich, o Herr, erhöre mich, damit dieses Volk erkennt, dass du, Herr, der [wahre] Gott bist, und damit du ihr Herz zur Umkehr bringst!
38 Da fiel das Feuer des Herrn herab und verzehrte das Brandopfer und das Holz und die Steine und die Erde; und es leckte das Wasser auf im Graben.
39 Als das ganze Volk dies sah, da fielen sie auf ihr Angesicht und sprachen: Der Herr ist Gott! Der Herr ist Gott[f]!
40 Elia aber sprach zu ihnen: Fangt die Propheten Baals, dass keiner von ihnen entkommt! Und sie fingen sie. Und Elia führte sie hinab an den Bach Kison und schlachtete sie dort.
41 Und Elia sprach zu Ahab: Zieh hinauf, iss und trink, denn es rauscht, als wolle es reichlich regnen!
42 Und als Ahab hinaufzog, um zu essen und zu trinken, ging Elia auf den Gipfel des Karmel und beugte sich zur Erde und legte sein Angesicht zwischen seine Knie;
43 und er sprach zu seinem Burschen[g]: Geh doch hinauf und schaue zum Meer hin! Da ging er hinauf und schaute hin und sprach: Es ist nichts da! Er sprach: Geh wieder hin! So geschah es siebenmal.
44 Und beim siebten Mal sprach er: Siehe, es steigt eine kleine Wolke aus dem Meer auf, wie die Hand eines Mannes! Da sprach er: Geh hinauf und sage zu Ahab: Spanne an und fahre hinab, damit dich der Regen nicht zurückhält!
45 Und es geschah unterdessen, da wurde der Himmel schwarz von Wolken und Wind, und es kam ein gewaltiger Regen. Ahab aber bestieg den Wagen und fuhr nach Jesreel.
46 Und die Hand des Herrn kam über Elia, und er gürtete seine Lenden und lief vor Ahab her bis nach Jesreel.

18 (A)After many days the word of the Lord came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, “Go, show yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain upon the earth.” 2 So Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. Now the famine was severe in Samaria. 3 And Ahab called Obadiah, who was (B)over the household. (Now Obadiah feared the Lord greatly, 4 and (C)when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the Lord, Obadiah took a hundred prophets and hid them by fifties in a cave and fed them with bread and water.) 5 And Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go through the land to all the springs of water and to all the valleys. Perhaps we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, and not lose some of the animals.” 6 So they divided the land between them to pass through it. Ahab went in one direction by himself, and Obadiah went in another direction by himself.
7 And as Obadiah was on the way, behold, Elijah met him. And Obadiah recognized him and fell on his face and said, “Is it you, my lord Elijah?” 8 And he answered him, “It is I. Go, tell your lord, ‘Behold, Elijah is here.’” 9 And he said, “How have I sinned, that you would give your servant into the hand of Ahab, to kill me? 10 (D)As the Lord your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my lord has not sent to seek you. And when they would say, ‘He is not here’, he would take an oath of the kingdom or nation, that they had not found you. 11 And now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, “Behold, Elijah is here.”’ 12 And as soon as I have gone from you, (E)the Spirit of the Lord will carry you I know not where. And so, when I come and tell Ahab and he cannot find you, he will kill me, although I your servant have feared the Lord from my youth. 13 Has it not been told my lord what I did (F)when Jezebel killed the prophets of the Lord, how I hid a hundred men of the Lord's prophets by fifties in a cave and fed them with bread and water? 14 And now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, “Behold, Elijah is here”’; and he will kill me.” 15 And Elijah said, (G)“As the Lord of hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him today.” 16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him. And Ahab went to meet Elijah.
17 When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, (H)“Is it you, you (I)troubler of Israel?” 18 And he answered, “I have not troubled Israel, but you have, and your father's house, because you have (J)abandoned the commandments of the Lord and (K)followed the Baals. 19 Now therefore send and gather all Israel to me at Mount (L)Carmel, and the (M)450 prophets of Baal and (N)the 400 prophets of Asherah, (O)who eat at Jezebel's table.”
The Priests of Baal Defeated
20 So Ahab sent to all the people of Israel and gathered the prophets together at Mount Carmel. 21 And Elijah came near to all the people and said, “How long (P)will you go limping between two different opinions? (Q)If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.” And the people did not answer him a word. 22 Then Elijah said to the people, (R)“I, even I only, am left a prophet of the Lord, but Baal's prophets are (S)450 men. 23 Let two bulls be given to us, and let them choose one bull for themselves and cut it in pieces and lay it on the wood, but put no fire to it. And I will prepare the other bull and lay it on the wood and put no fire to it. 24 And you call upon the name of your god, and I will call upon the name of the Lord, and the God who (T)answers by fire, he is God.” And all the people answered, “It is well spoken.” 25 Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose for yourselves one bull and prepare it first, for you are many, and call upon the name of your god, but put no fire to it.” 26 And they took the bull that was given them, and they prepared it and called upon the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying, “O Baal, answer us!” But there was no voice, and no one answered. And they limped round the altar that they had made. 27 And at noon Elijah mocked them, saying, “Cry aloud, for he is a god. Either he is musing, or he is relieving himself, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened.” 28 And they cried aloud and (U)cut themselves after their custom with swords and lances, until the blood gushed out upon them. 29 And as midday passed, they raved on until the time of (V)the offering of the oblation, but there was no voice. No one answered; no one paid attention.
30 Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.” And all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of the Lord that had been (W)thrown down. 31 Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord came, saying, (X)“Israel shall be your name”, 32 and with the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord. And he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two seahs[a] of seed. 33 (Y)And he put the wood in order and cut the bull in pieces and laid it on the wood. And he said, “Fill four jars with water and (Z)pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood.” 34 And he said, “Do it a second time.” And they did it a second time. And he said, “Do it a third time.” And they did it a third time. 35 And the water ran round the altar and filled the trench also with water.
36 And at the time of (AA)the offering of the oblation, Elijah the prophet came near and said, “O Lord, (AB)God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that (AC)you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that (AD)I have done all these things at your word. 37 Answer me, O Lord, answer me, that this people may know that you, O Lord, are God, and that you have turned their hearts back.” 38 (AE)Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. 39 And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces and said, (AF)“The Lord, he is God; the Lord, he is God.” 40 And Elijah said to them, “Seize the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape.” And they seized them. And Elijah brought them down to (AG)the brook Kishon and (AH)slaughtered them there.
The Lord Sends Rain
41 And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink, for there is a sound of the rushing of rain.” 42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Mount Carmel. (AI)And he bowed himself down on the earth and put his face between his knees. 43 And he said to his servant, “Go up now, look towards the sea.” And he went up and looked and said, “There is nothing.” And he said, “Go again,” seven times. 44 And at the seventh time he said, “Behold, (AJ)a little cloud like a man's hand is rising from the sea.” And he said, “Go up, say to Ahab, ‘Prepare your chariot and go down, lest the rain stop you.’” 45 And in a little while the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode and went to (AK)Jezreel. 46 (AL)And the hand of the Lord was on Elijah, (AM)and he gathered up his garment and ran before Ahab to the entrance of (AN)Jezreel.
