El hombre de Dios que llegó de Judá
13 Sucedió que un hombre de Dios fue desde Judá hasta Betel en obediencia a la palabra del Señor. Cuando Jeroboán, de pie junto al altar, se disponía a quemar un sacrificio,[a] 2 el hombre de Dios, en obediencia a la palabra del Señor, gritó: «¡Altar, altar! Así dice el Señor: “En la familia de David nacerá un hijo llamado Josías, el cual sacrificará sobre ti a estos sacerdotes de altares paganos que aquí queman sacrificios. ¡Sobre ti se quemarán huesos humanos!”».
3 Aquel mismo día el hombre de Dios ofreció una señal: «Esta es la señal que el Señor da: ¡El altar será derribado y las cenizas se esparcirán!».
4 Al oír la sentencia que el hombre de Dios pronunciaba contra el altar de Betel, el rey extendió el brazo desde el altar y dijo: «¡Agárrenlo!». Pero el brazo que había extendido contra el hombre se le paralizó, de modo que no podía contraerlo. 5 En ese momento, el altar se vino abajo y las cenizas se esparcieron, según la señal que, en obediencia a la palabra del Señor, había dado el hombre de Dios. 6 Entonces el rey dijo al hombre de Dios:
—¡Apacigua al Señor tu Dios! ¡Ora por mí, para que se me cure el brazo!
El hombre de Dios suplicó al Señor y al rey se le curó el brazo, quedándole como antes. 7 Luego el rey dijo al hombre de Dios:
—Ven a casa conmigo y come algo; además, quiero hacerte un regalo.
8 Pero el hombre de Dios respondió al rey:
—Aunque usted me diera la mitad de sus posesiones, no iría a su casa. Aquí no comeré pan ni beberé agua, 9 porque así me lo ordenó el Señor. Me dijo: “No comas pan, ni bebas agua, ni regreses por el mismo camino”.
10 De modo que tomó un camino diferente al que había tomado para ir a Betel.
11 En ese tiempo vivía en Betel cierto profeta anciano. Sus hijos fueron a contarle[b] todo lo que el hombre de Dios había hecho allí aquel día y lo que le había dicho al rey. 12 Su padre preguntó:
—¿Por dónde se fue?
Sus hijos le indicaron el camino que había tomado el hombre de Dios quien había llegado de Judá 13 y el padre ordenó:
—Aparéjenme un asno para que lo monte.
Cuando el asno estuvo listo, el profeta anciano lo montó 14 y se fue tras el hombre de Dios. Lo encontró sentado debajo de una encina y le preguntó:
—¿Eres tú el hombre de Dios que vino de Judá?
—Sí, lo soy —respondió.
15 Entonces el profeta dijo:
—Ven a comer a mi casa.
16 —No puedo volver contigo ni acompañarte —respondió el hombre de Dios—; tampoco puedo comer pan ni beber agua contigo en este lugar, 17 pues el Señor me ha dado esta orden: “No comas pan ni bebas agua allí, ni regreses por el mismo camino”.
18 El anciano respondió:
—También yo soy profeta, como tú. Y un ángel, obedeciendo la palabra del Señor, me dijo: “Llévalo a tu casa para que coma pan y beba agua”.
Así lo engañó 19 y el hombre de Dios volvió con él, y comió y bebió en su casa.
20 Mientras estaban sentados a la mesa, la palabra del Señor vino al profeta que lo había hecho volver. 21 Entonces el profeta anunció al hombre de Dios que había llegado de Judá:
—Así dice el Señor: “Has desafiado la palabra del Señor y no has cumplido la orden que el Señor tu Dios te dio. 22 Has vuelto para comer pan y beber agua en el lugar donde él te dijo que no lo hicieras. Por lo tanto, no será sepultado tu cuerpo en la tumba de tus antepasados”.
23 Cuando el hombre de Dios terminó de comer y beber, el profeta que lo había hecho volver le aparejó un asno 24 y el hombre de Dios se puso en camino. Pero un león le salió al paso y lo mató, dejándolo tendido en el camino. Sin embargo, el león y el asno se quedaron junto al cuerpo. 25 Al ver el cuerpo tendido y al león cuidando el cuerpo, los que pasaban por el camino llevaron la noticia a la ciudad donde vivía el profeta anciano.
26 Cuando el profeta que lo había hecho volver de su viaje se enteró de eso, dijo: «Ahí tienen al hombre de Dios que desafió la palabra del Señor. Por eso el Señor lo entregó al león, que lo ha matado y despedazado, como la palabra del Señor se lo había advertido».
27 Luego el profeta dijo a sus hijos: «Aparéjenme el asno». En cuanto lo hicieron, 28 el profeta salió y encontró el cuerpo tendido en el camino, con el asno y el león junto a él. El león no se había comido el cadáver ni había despedazado al asno. 29 Entonces el profeta levantó el cadáver del hombre de Dios, lo puso sobre el asno y se lo llevó de vuelta a la ciudad para hacer duelo por él y enterrarlo. 30 Luego lo puso en la tumba de su propiedad e hicieron duelo por él, clamando: «¡Ay, hermano mío!».
31 Después de enterrarlo, el profeta dijo a sus hijos: «Cuando yo muera, entiérrenme en la misma tumba donde está enterrado el hombre de Dios y pongan mis huesos junto a los suyos. 32 Porque ciertamente se cumplirá la sentencia que, en obediencia a la palabra del Señor, él pronunció contra el altar de Betel y contra todos los altares paganos de las ciudades de Samaria».
33 Con todo, Jeroboán no cambió su mala conducta, sino que una vez más puso como sacerdotes para los altares paganos a toda clase de gente. A cualquiera que deseaba ser sacerdote de esos altares, él lo consagraba como tal. 34 Esa conducta llevó a la dinastía de Jeroboán a pecar, y causó su caída y su desaparición de la faz de la tierra.

The Man of God Speaks Against Bethel
13 The Lord commanded a man of God from Judah to go to Bethel. When he arrived, Jeroboam was standing by the altar to offer a sacrifice. 2 The Lord had commanded the man of God to speak against the altar. The man said, “Altar, the Lord says to you: ‘David’s family will have a son named Josiah. He will kill the priests of the places of worship. They now make their sacrifices on you. But Josiah will sacrifice those priests on you. Human bones will be burned on you.’” 3 The man of God gave proof that these things would happen. He said, “This is God’s sign that this will happen. This altar will break apart. And the ashes on it will fall onto the ground.”
4 King Jeroboam heard what the man of God said about the altar in Bethel. So Jeroboam raised his hand from the altar and pointed at the man. “Capture him!” he said. But when the king said this, his arm became paralyzed. He could not move it. 5 Also, the altar broke into pieces. All its ashes fell onto the ground. This was the sign the Lord had told the man of God to give.
6 Then the king said to the man of God, “Please pray to the Lord your God for me. Ask him to heal my arm.”
So the man of God prayed to the Lord. And the king’s arm was healed. It became as it was before.
7 Then the king said to the man of God, “Please come home and eat with me. I will give you a gift.”
8 But the man of God answered the king, “I will not go home with you! Even if you gave me half of your kingdom, I would not go! I will not eat or drink anything in this place. 9 The Lord commanded me not to eat or drink anything. He also commanded me not to return on the same road by which I came.” 10 So he traveled on a different road. He did not return on the same road by which he had come to Bethel.
11 Now there was an old prophet living in Bethel. His sons came and told him what the man of God had done there that day. They told their father what he had said to King Jeroboam. 12 The father asked, “Which road did he use when he left?” So his sons showed him which road the man of God from Judah had taken. 13 The prophet told his sons to put a saddle on his donkey. So they saddled the donkey, and he left.
14 He went after the man of God. He found the man sitting under an oak tree. The prophet asked, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?”
The man answered, “Yes, I am.”
15 So the prophet said, “Please come home and eat with me.”
16 But the man of God answered, “I can’t go home with you. I can’t eat or drink with you in this place. 17 The Lord said to me, ‘You must not eat or drink anything there. And you must not return on the same road by which you came.’”
18 Then the old prophet said, “But I also am a prophet like you.” Then he told a lie. He said, “An angel from the Lord came to me. He told me to bring you to my home. He said you should eat and drink with me.” 19 So the man of God went to the old prophet’s house. And he ate and drank with him there.
20 While they were sitting at the table, the Lord spoke his word to the old prophet. 21 The old prophet cried out to the man of God from Judah. He said, “The Lord said you did not obey him! He said you did not do what the Lord your God commanded you. 22 The Lord commanded you not to eat or drink anything in this place. But you came back and ate and drank. So your body will not be buried in your family grave.”
23 The man of God finished eating. Then the prophet put a saddle on his donkey for him. And the man left. 24 As he was traveling on the road home, a lion attacked and killed him. His body lay on the road. The donkey and the lion stood near it. 25 Some men were traveling on that road. They saw the body and the lion standing near it. So they went to the city where the old prophet lived. And they told what they had seen.
26 The old prophet who had brought the man of God back heard about what had happened. He said, “It is the man of God who did not obey the Lord’s command. So the Lord sent a lion to kill him. The Lord said he would do this.”
27 Then the prophet said to his sons, “Put a saddle on my donkey.” So they did. 28 The old prophet went out and found the body lying on the road. The donkey and the lion were still standing near it. The lion had not eaten the body. And it had not hurt the donkey. 29 So the prophet put the body on his donkey. And he carried it back to the city. There he would have a time of sadness for him and bury him. 30 The prophet buried the body in his own family grave. And he was sad for the man of God. He said, “Oh, my brother.”
31 So the prophet buried the body. Then he said to his sons, “When I die, bury me in this same grave. Put my bones next to his. 32 Through him the Lord spoke against the altar at Bethel. And he spoke against the places of worship in the towns of Samaria. And what the Lord spoke through him will certainly come true.”
33 But King Jeroboam did not stop doing evil things. He continued to choose priests for the places of worship from all the people. Anyone who wanted to be a priest for the places of worship was allowed. 34 In this way the kingdom of Jeroboam sinned. And that sin caused its ruin and destruction from the earth.

The Message of the Man of God
13 And behold, (A)a man of God went from Judah to Bethel [a]by the word of the Lord, (B)and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense. 2 Then he cried out against the altar [b]by the word of the Lord, and said, “O altar, altar! Thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, a child, (C)Josiah by name, shall be born to the house of David; and on you he shall sacrifice the priests of the high places who burn incense on you, and men’s bones shall be (D)burned on you.’ ” 3 And he gave (E)a sign the same day, saying, “This is the sign which the Lord has spoken: Surely the altar shall split apart, and the ashes on it shall be poured out.”
4 So it came to pass when King Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, who cried out against the altar in Bethel, that he stretched out his hand from the altar, saying, “Arrest him!” Then his hand, which he stretched out toward him, withered, so that he could not pull it back to himself. 5 The altar also was split apart, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of the Lord. 6 Then the king answered and said to the man of God, “Please (F)entreat the favor of the Lord your God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored to me.”
So the man of God entreated the Lord, and the king’s hand was restored to him, and became as before. 7 Then the king said to the man of God, “Come home with me and refresh yourself, and (G)I will give you a reward.”
8 But the man of God said to the king, (H)“If you were to give me half your house, I would not go in with you; nor would I eat bread nor drink water in this place. 9 For so it was commanded me by the word of the Lord, saying, (I)‘You shall not eat bread, nor drink water, nor return by the same way you came.’ ” 10 So he went another way and did not return by the way he came to Bethel.
Death of the Man of God
11 Now an (J)old prophet dwelt in Bethel, and his [c]sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Bethel; they also told their father the words which he had spoken to the king. 12 And their father said to them, “Which way did he go?” For his sons [d]had seen which way the man of God went who came from Judah. 13 Then he said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” So they saddled the donkey for him; and he rode on it, 14 and went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak. Then he said to him, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?”
And he said, “I am.”
15 Then he said to him, “Come home with me and eat bread.”
16 And he said, (K)“I cannot return with you nor go in with you; neither can I eat bread nor drink water with you in this place. 17 For [e]I have been told (L)by the word of the Lord, ‘You shall not eat bread nor drink water there, nor return by going the way you came.’ ”
18 He said to him, “I too am a prophet as you are, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the Lord, saying, ‘Bring him back with you to your house, that he may eat bread and drink water.’ ” (He was lying to him.)
19 So he went back with him, and ate bread in his house, and drank water.
20 Now it happened, as they sat at the table, that the word of the Lord came to the prophet who had brought him back; 21 and he cried out to the man of God who came from Judah, saying, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Because you have disobeyed the word of the Lord, and have not kept the commandment which the Lord your God commanded you, 22 but you came back, ate bread, and drank water in the (M)place of which the Lord said to you, “Eat no bread and drink no water,” your corpse shall not come to the tomb of your fathers.’ ”
23 So it was, after he had eaten bread and after he had drunk, that he saddled the donkey for him, the prophet whom he had brought back. 24 When he was gone, (N)a lion met him on the road and killed him. And his corpse was thrown on the road, and the donkey stood by it. The lion also stood by the corpse. 25 And there, men passed by and saw the corpse thrown on the road, and the lion standing by the corpse. Then they went and told it in the city where the old prophet dwelt.
26 Now when the prophet who had brought him back from the way heard it, he said, “It is the man of God who was disobedient to the word of the Lord. Therefore the Lord has delivered him to the lion, which has torn him and killed him, according to the word of the Lord which He spoke to him.” 27 And he spoke to his sons, saying, “Saddle the donkey for me.” So they saddled it. 28 Then he went and found his corpse thrown on the road, and the donkey and the lion standing by the corpse. The lion had not eaten the corpse nor torn the donkey. 29 And the prophet took up the corpse of the man of God, laid it on the donkey, and brought it back. So the old prophet came to the city to mourn, and to bury him. 30 Then he laid the corpse in his own tomb; and they mourned over him, saying, (O)“Alas, my brother!” 31 So it was, after he had buried him, that he spoke to his sons, saying, “When I am dead, then bury me in the tomb where the man of God is buried; (P)lay my bones beside his bones. 32 (Q)For the [f]saying which he cried out by the word of the Lord against the altar in Bethel, and against all the [g]shrines on the high places which are in the cities of (R)Samaria, will surely come to pass.”
33 (S)After this event Jeroboam did not turn from his evil way, but again he made priests from every class of people for the high places; whoever wished, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places. 34 (T)And this thing was the sin of the house of Jeroboam, so as (U)to exterminate and destroy it from the face of the earth.

The Man of God From Judah
13 By the word of the Lord a man of God(A) came from Judah to Bethel,(B) as Jeroboam was standing by the altar to make an offering. 2 By the word of the Lord he cried out against the altar: “Altar, altar! This is what the Lord says: ‘A son named Josiah(C) will be born to the house of David. On you he will sacrifice the priests of the high places(D) who make offerings here, and human bones will be burned on you.’” 3 That same day the man of God gave a sign:(E) “This is the sign the Lord has declared: The altar will be split apart and the ashes on it will be poured out.”
4 When King Jeroboam heard what the man of God cried out against the altar at Bethel, he stretched out his hand from the altar and said, “Seize him!” But the hand he stretched out toward the man shriveled up, so that he could not pull it back. 5 Also, the altar was split apart and its ashes poured out according to the sign given by the man of God by the word of the Lord.
6 Then the king said to the man of God, “Intercede(F) with the Lord your God and pray for me that my hand may be restored.” So the man of God interceded with the Lord, and the king’s hand was restored and became as it was before.
7 The king said to the man of God, “Come home with me for a meal, and I will give you a gift.”(G)
8 But the man of God answered the king, “Even if you were to give me half your possessions,(H) I would not go with you, nor would I eat bread(I) or drink water here. 9 For I was commanded by the word of the Lord: ‘You must not eat bread or drink water or return by the way you came.’” 10 So he took another road and did not return by the way he had come to Bethel.
11 Now there was a certain old prophet living in Bethel, whose sons came and told him all that the man of God had done there that day. They also told their father what he had said to the king. 12 Their father asked them, “Which way did he go?” And his sons showed him which road the man of God from Judah had taken. 13 So he said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” And when they had saddled the donkey for him, he mounted it 14 and rode after the man of God. He found him sitting under an oak tree and asked, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?”
“I am,” he replied.
15 So the prophet said to him, “Come home with me and eat.”
16 The man of God said, “I cannot turn back and go with you, nor can I eat bread(J) or drink water with you in this place. 17 I have been told by the word of the Lord: ‘You must not eat bread or drink water there or return by the way you came.’”
18 The old prophet answered, “I too am a prophet, as you are. And an angel said to me by the word of the Lord:(K) ‘Bring him back with you to your house so that he may eat bread and drink water.’” (But he was lying(L) to him.) 19 So the man of God returned with him and ate and drank in his house.
20 While they were sitting at the table, the word of the Lord came to the old prophet who had brought him back. 21 He cried out to the man of God who had come from Judah, “This is what the Lord says: ‘You have defied(M) the word of the Lord and have not kept the command the Lord your God gave you. 22 You came back and ate bread and drank water in the place where he told you not to eat or drink. Therefore your body will not be buried in the tomb of your ancestors.’”
23 When the man of God had finished eating and drinking, the prophet who had brought him back saddled his donkey for him. 24 As he went on his way, a lion(N) met him on the road and killed him, and his body was left lying on the road, with both the donkey and the lion standing beside it. 25 Some people who passed by saw the body lying there, with the lion standing beside the body, and they went and reported it in the city where the old prophet lived.
26 When the prophet who had brought him back from his journey heard of it, he said, “It is the man of God who defied(O) the word of the Lord. The Lord has given him over to the lion, which has mauled him and killed him, as the word of the Lord had warned him.”
27 The prophet said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me,” and they did so. 28 Then he went out and found the body lying on the road, with the donkey and the lion standing beside it. The lion had neither eaten the body nor mauled the donkey. 29 So the prophet picked up the body of the man of God, laid it on the donkey, and brought it back to his own city to mourn for him and bury him. 30 Then he laid the body in his own tomb,(P) and they mourned over him and said, “Alas, my brother!”(Q)
31 After burying him, he said to his sons, “When I die, bury me in the grave where the man of God is buried; lay my bones(R) beside his bones. 32 For the message he declared by the word of the Lord against the altar in Bethel and against all the shrines on the high places(S) in the towns of Samaria(T) will certainly come true.”(U)
33 Even after this, Jeroboam did not change his evil ways,(V) but once more appointed priests for the high places from all sorts(W) of people. Anyone who wanted to become a priest he consecrated for the high places. 34 This was the sin(X) of the house of Jeroboam that led to its downfall and to its destruction(Y) from the face of the earth.
