Jeroboam y el hombre de Dios
13 Sucedió que un hombre de Dios fue desde Judá a Betel[a] por palabra del Señor(A), cuando Jeroboam estaba junto al altar para quemar incienso(B). 2 Y el hombre de Dios clamó contra el altar por palabra del Señor(C), y dijo: «Oh altar, altar, así dice el Señor: “A la casa de David le nacerá un hijo, que se llamará Josías; y él sacrificará sobre ti a los sacerdotes de los lugares altos que queman incienso sobre ti, y sobre ti serán quemados huesos humanos(D)”».
3 Aquel mismo día dio una señal[b], y dijo: «Esta es la señal de que el Señor ha hablado(E): “El altar se romperá y las cenizas[c] que están sobre él se derramarán”». 4 Cuando el rey oyó la palabra que el hombre de Dios había clamado contra el altar de Betel, extendió[d] su mano desde el altar y dijo: «¡Préndanlo!». Pero la mano que extendió contra él se le quedó rígida, de modo que no podía volverla hacia sí. 5 El altar se rompió y las cenizas se derramaron del altar, conforme a la señal que el hombre de Dios había dado por palabra del Señor. 6 El rey respondió al hombre de Dios: «Te ruego que supliques al[e] Señor tu Dios, y ores por mí, para que mi mano me sea restaurada(F)». El hombre de Dios suplicó al[f] Señor(G) y la mano del rey le fue restaurada, y quedó como antes. 7 Entonces el rey dijo al hombre de Dios: «Ven conmigo a casa y refréscate, y te daré una recompensa(H)». 8 Pero el hombre de Dios dijo al rey: «Aunque usted me diera la mitad de su casa no iría con usted, tampoco comería pan ni bebería agua en este lugar(I). 9 Porque así se me ordenó por palabra del Señor, que me dijo: “No comerás pan, ni beberás agua, ni volverás por el camino que fuiste”». 10 Y se fue por otro camino, no regresó por el camino por donde había ido a Betel.
El profeta y el hombre de Dios
11 Moraba entonces en Betel un anciano profeta; y sus hijos fueron y le contaron(J) todo lo que el hombre de Dios había hecho aquel día en Betel. Las palabras que él había hablado al rey, también las contaron a su padre. 12 Y su padre les dijo: «¿Por dónde se fue?». Y sus hijos le mostraron[g] el camino por donde se había ido el hombre de Dios que había venido de Judá. 13 Entonces dijo a sus hijos: «Aparéjenme el asno». Le aparejaron el asno, se montó sobre él, 14 y fue tras el hombre de Dios; lo halló sentado debajo de una encina, y le dijo: «¿Eres tú el hombre de Dios que vino de Judá?». Y él respondió: «Yo soy». 15 Entonces le dijo: «Ven conmigo a casa y come pan». 16 Y él respondió: «No puedo volver contigo ni ir contigo; tampoco comeré pan ni beberé agua contigo en este lugar(K). 17 Porque me vino un mandato por palabra del Señor(L): “No comerás pan ni beberás agua allí, ni volverás por el camino que fuiste”». 18 Y el otro le respondió: «Yo también soy profeta(M) como tú, y un ángel(N) me habló por palabra del Señor, diciendo: “Tráelo contigo a tu casa, para que coma pan y beba agua”». Pero le estaba mintiendo(O). 19 Entonces se volvió con él, comió pan en su casa y bebió agua.
20 Y cuando ellos estaban a la mesa, la palabra del Señor vino al profeta que le había hecho volver; 21 y él le gritó al hombre de Dios que vino de Judá: «Así dice el Señor: “Porque has desobedecido el mandato del Señor, y no has guardado el mandamiento que el Señor tu Dios te ha ordenado, 22 sino que has vuelto y has comido pan y bebido agua en el lugar del cual Él te dijo: ‘No comerás pan ni beberás agua’, tu cadáver no entrará en el sepulcro de tus padres”». 23 Y después de haber comido pan y de haber bebido agua, aparejó el asno para él, para el profeta que había hecho volver. 24 Y cuando este se fue, un león lo encontró en el camino y lo mató(P), y su cadáver quedó tirado en el camino y el asno estaba junto a él; también el león estaba junto al cadáver. 25 Entonces pasaron unos hombres y vieron el cadáver tirado en el camino y el león que estaba junto al cadáver; y fueron y lo dijeron en la ciudad donde vivía el anciano profeta(Q).
26 Cuando el profeta que le había hecho volver del camino lo oyó, dijo: «Es el hombre de Dios, que desobedeció el mandato del Señor; por tanto el Señor lo ha entregado al león que lo ha desgarrado y matado, conforme a la palabra que el Señor le había hablado». 27 Entonces habló a sus hijos, diciendo: «Aparéjenme el asno». Y se lo aparejaron. 28 Fue y halló el cadáver tirado en el camino, y el asno y el león estaban junto al cadáver; el león no había comido el cadáver ni desgarrado el asno. 29 El profeta levantó el cadáver del hombre de Dios, lo puso sobre el asno y lo trajo. Vino a la ciudad del anciano profeta para hacer duelo por él y enterrarlo. 30 Puso el cadáver en su propio sepulcro, e hicieron duelo por él, diciendo: «¡Ay, hermano mío(R)!».
31 Y después de haberlo enterrado, dijo a sus hijos: «Cuando yo muera, entiérrenme en el sepulcro donde está enterrado el hombre de Dios; pongan mis huesos junto a sus huesos(S). 32 Porque ciertamente sucederá lo que él clamó por palabra del Señor contra el altar(T) en Betel y contra todas las casas de los lugares altos(U) que están en las ciudades de Samaria(V)».
33 Después de este hecho, Jeroboam no se volvió de su mal camino, sino que volvió a nombrar sacerdotes para los lugares altos de entre el pueblo; al que lo deseaba lo investía[h] para que fuera sacerdote(W) de los lugares altos(X). 34 Y esto fue motivo de pecado para la casa de Jeroboam(Y), lo que hizo que fuera borrada y destruida de sobre la superficie de la tierra(Z).

13 As Jeroboam approached the altar to burn incense to the golden calf idol, a prophet of the Lord from Judah walked up to him. 2 Then, at the Lord’s command, the prophet shouted, “O altar, the Lord says that a child named Josiah shall be born into the family line of David, and he shall sacrifice upon you the priests from the shrines on the hills who come here to burn incense; and men’s bones shall be burned upon you.”
3 Then he gave this proof that his message was from the Lord: “This altar will split apart, and the ashes on it will spill to the ground.”
4 The king was very angry with the prophet for saying this. He shouted to his guards, “Arrest that man!” and shook his fist at him. Instantly the king’s arm became paralyzed in that position; he couldn’t pull it back again! 5 At the same moment a wide crack appeared in the altar and the ashes poured out, just as the prophet had said would happen. For this was the prophet’s proof that God had been speaking through him.
6 “Oh, please, please,” the king cried out to the prophet, “beg the Lord your God to restore my arm again.”
So he prayed to the Lord, and the king’s arm became normal again.
7 Then the king said to the prophet, “Come to the palace with me and rest awhile and have some food; and I’ll give you a reward because you healed my arm.”
8 But the prophet said to the king, “Even if you gave me half your palace, I wouldn’t go into it; nor would I eat or drink even water in this place! 9 For the Lord has given me strict orders not to eat anything or drink any water while I’m here, and not to return to Judah by the road I came on.”
10 So he went back another way.
11 As it happened, there was an old prophet living in Bethel, and his sons went home and told him what the prophet from Judah had done and what he had said to the king.
12 “Which way did he go?” the old prophet asked. So they told him.
13 “Quick, saddle the donkey,” the old man said. And when they had saddled the donkey for him, 14 he rode after the prophet and found him sitting under an oak tree.
“Are you the prophet who came from Judah?” he asked him.
“Yes,” he replied, “I am.”
15 Then the old man said to the prophet, “Come home with me and eat.”
16-17 “No,” he replied, “I can’t; for I am not allowed to eat anything or to drink any water at Bethel. The Lord strictly warned me against it; and he also told me not to return home by the same road I came on.”
18 But the old man said, “I am a prophet too, just as you are; and an angel gave me a message from the Lord. I am to take you home with me and give you food and water.”
But the old man was lying to him. 19 So they went back together, and the prophet ate some food and drank some water at the old man’s home.
20 Then, suddenly, while they were sitting at the table, a message from the Lord came to the old man, 21-22 and he shouted at the prophet from Judah, “The Lord says that because you have been disobedient to his clear command and have come here, and have eaten and drunk water in the place he told you not to, therefore your body shall not be buried in the grave of your fathers.”
23 After finishing the meal, the old man saddled the prophet’s donkey, 24-25 and the prophet started off again. But as he was traveling along, a lion came out and killed him. His body lay there on the road, with the donkey and the lion standing beside it. Those who came by and saw the body lying in the road and the lion standing quietly beside it, reported it in Bethel where the old prophet lived.
26 When he heard what had happened he exclaimed, “It is the prophet who disobeyed the Lord’s command; the Lord fulfilled his warning by causing the lion to kill him.”
27 Then he said to his sons, “Saddle my donkey!” And they did.
28 He found the prophet’s body lying in the road; and the donkey and lion were still standing there beside it, for the lion had not eaten the body nor attacked the donkey. 29 So the prophet laid the body upon the donkey and took it back to the city to mourn over it and bury it.
30 He laid the body in his own grave, exclaiming, “Alas, my brother!”
31 Afterwards he said to his sons, “When I die, bury me in the grave where the prophet is buried. Lay my bones beside his bones. 32 For the Lord told him to shout against the altar in Bethel, and his curse against the shrines in the cities of Samaria shall surely be fulfilled.”
33 Despite the prophet’s warning, Jeroboam did not turn away from his evil ways; instead, he made more priests than ever from the common people, to offer sacrifices to idols in the shrines on the hills. Anyone who wanted to could be a priest. 34 This was a great sin and resulted in the destruction of Jeroboam’s kingdom and the death of all of his family.

The Message of the Man of God
13 And behold, (A)a man of God went from Judah to Bethel [a]by the word of the Lord, (B)and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense. 2 Then he cried out against the altar [b]by the word of the Lord, and said, “O altar, altar! Thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, a child, (C)Josiah by name, shall be born to the house of David; and on you he shall sacrifice the priests of the high places who burn incense on you, and men’s bones shall be (D)burned on you.’ ” 3 And he gave (E)a sign the same day, saying, “This is the sign which the Lord has spoken: Surely the altar shall split apart, and the ashes on it shall be poured out.”
4 So it came to pass when King Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, who cried out against the altar in Bethel, that he stretched out his hand from the altar, saying, “Arrest him!” Then his hand, which he stretched out toward him, withered, so that he could not pull it back to himself. 5 The altar also was split apart, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of the Lord. 6 Then the king answered and said to the man of God, “Please (F)entreat the favor of the Lord your God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored to me.”
So the man of God entreated the Lord, and the king’s hand was restored to him, and became as before. 7 Then the king said to the man of God, “Come home with me and refresh yourself, and (G)I will give you a reward.”
8 But the man of God said to the king, (H)“If you were to give me half your house, I would not go in with you; nor would I eat bread nor drink water in this place. 9 For so it was commanded me by the word of the Lord, saying, (I)‘You shall not eat bread, nor drink water, nor return by the same way you came.’ ” 10 So he went another way and did not return by the way he came to Bethel.
Death of the Man of God
11 Now an (J)old prophet dwelt in Bethel, and his [c]sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Bethel; they also told their father the words which he had spoken to the king. 12 And their father said to them, “Which way did he go?” For his sons [d]had seen which way the man of God went who came from Judah. 13 Then he said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” So they saddled the donkey for him; and he rode on it, 14 and went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak. Then he said to him, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?”
And he said, “I am.”
15 Then he said to him, “Come home with me and eat bread.”
16 And he said, (K)“I cannot return with you nor go in with you; neither can I eat bread nor drink water with you in this place. 17 For [e]I have been told (L)by the word of the Lord, ‘You shall not eat bread nor drink water there, nor return by going the way you came.’ ”
18 He said to him, “I too am a prophet as you are, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the Lord, saying, ‘Bring him back with you to your house, that he may eat bread and drink water.’ ” (He was lying to him.)
19 So he went back with him, and ate bread in his house, and drank water.
20 Now it happened, as they sat at the table, that the word of the Lord came to the prophet who had brought him back; 21 and he cried out to the man of God who came from Judah, saying, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Because you have disobeyed the word of the Lord, and have not kept the commandment which the Lord your God commanded you, 22 but you came back, ate bread, and drank water in the (M)place of which the Lord said to you, “Eat no bread and drink no water,” your corpse shall not come to the tomb of your fathers.’ ”
23 So it was, after he had eaten bread and after he had drunk, that he saddled the donkey for him, the prophet whom he had brought back. 24 When he was gone, (N)a lion met him on the road and killed him. And his corpse was thrown on the road, and the donkey stood by it. The lion also stood by the corpse. 25 And there, men passed by and saw the corpse thrown on the road, and the lion standing by the corpse. Then they went and told it in the city where the old prophet dwelt.
26 Now when the prophet who had brought him back from the way heard it, he said, “It is the man of God who was disobedient to the word of the Lord. Therefore the Lord has delivered him to the lion, which has torn him and killed him, according to the word of the Lord which He spoke to him.” 27 And he spoke to his sons, saying, “Saddle the donkey for me.” So they saddled it. 28 Then he went and found his corpse thrown on the road, and the donkey and the lion standing by the corpse. The lion had not eaten the corpse nor torn the donkey. 29 And the prophet took up the corpse of the man of God, laid it on the donkey, and brought it back. So the old prophet came to the city to mourn, and to bury him. 30 Then he laid the corpse in his own tomb; and they mourned over him, saying, (O)“Alas, my brother!” 31 So it was, after he had buried him, that he spoke to his sons, saying, “When I am dead, then bury me in the tomb where the man of God is buried; (P)lay my bones beside his bones. 32 (Q)For the [f]saying which he cried out by the word of the Lord against the altar in Bethel, and against all the [g]shrines on the high places which are in the cities of (R)Samaria, will surely come to pass.”
33 (S)After this event Jeroboam did not turn from his evil way, but again he made priests from every class of people for the high places; whoever wished, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places. 34 (T)And this thing was the sin of the house of Jeroboam, so as (U)to exterminate and destroy it from the face of the earth.
