Rebelión de Israel
12 Roboam fue a Siquem, porque todo Israel había venido a Siquem para hacerle rey.
2 Y aconteció que cuando lo oyó Jeroboam hijo de Nebat, que aún estaba en Egipto, adonde había huido de delante del rey Salomón, y habitaba en Egipto,
3 enviaron a llamarle. Vino, pues, Jeroboam, y toda la congregación de Israel, y hablaron a Roboam, diciendo:
4 Tu padre hizo pesado nuestro yugo, mas ahora disminuye tú algo de la dura servidumbre de tu padre, y del yugo pesado que puso sobre nosotros, y te serviremos.
5 Y él les dijo: Id, y de aquí a tres días volved a mí. Y el pueblo se fue.
6 Entonces el rey Roboam pidió consejo de los ancianos que habían estado delante de Salomón su padre cuando vivía, y dijo: ¿Qué me aconsejáis vosotros que responda a este pueblo?
7 Y ellos le hablaron diciendo: Si tú te haces hoy servidor de este pueblo y les hablas buenas palabras, ellos te servirán para siempre.
8 Pero él dejó el consejo que los ancianos le habían dado, y pidió consejo de los jóvenes que se habían criado con él, y estaban a su servicio.
9 Y les dijo: ¿Qué me aconsejáis vosotros que responda a este pueblo, que me ha hablado diciendo: Disminuye algo del yugo que tu padre puso sobre nosotros?
10 Entonces los jóvenes que se habían criado con él le respondieron diciendo: Así hablarás a este pueblo que te ha dicho: Tu padre hizo pesado nuestro yugo, mas tú disminúyenos algo; esto debes responderles: El menor dedo de los míos es más grueso que los lomos de mi padre.
11 Ahora, pues, mi padre os cargó de pesado yugo, mas yo añadiré a vuestro yugo; mi padre os castigó con azotes, mas yo os castigaré con escorpiones.
12 Al tercer día vino Jeroboam con todo el pueblo a Roboam, según el rey lo había mandado, diciendo: Volved a mí al tercer día.
13 Y el rey respondió al pueblo duramente, dejando el consejo que los ancianos le habían dado;
14 y les habló conforme al consejo de los jóvenes, diciendo: Mi padre hizo pesado vuestro yugo, pero yo añadiré a vuestro yugo; mi padre os castigó con azotes, mas yo os castigaré con escorpiones.
15 Y no oyó el rey al pueblo; porque era designio de Jehová para confirmar la palabra que Jehová había hablado por medio de Ahías silonita a Jeroboam hijo de Nebat.
16 Cuando todo el pueblo vio que el rey no les había oído, le respondieron diciendo: ¿Qué parte tenemos nosotros con David? No tenemos heredad en el hijo de Isay. ¡Israel, a tus tiendas! ¡Provee ahora en tu casa, David! Entonces Israel se fue a sus tiendas.
17 Pero reinó Roboam sobre los hijos de Israel que moraban en las ciudades de Judá.
18 Y el rey Roboam envió a Adoram, que estaba sobre los tributos; pero lo apedreó todo Israel, y murió. Entonces el rey Roboam se apresuró a subirse en un carro y huir a Jerusalén.
19 Así se apartó Israel de la casa de David hasta hoy.
20 Y aconteció que oyendo todo Israel que Jeroboam había vuelto, enviaron a llamarle a la congregación, y le hicieron rey sobre todo Israel, sin quedar tribu alguna que siguiese a la casa de David, sino sólo la tribu de Judá.
21 Y cuando Roboam vino a Jerusalén, reunió a toda la casa de Judá y a la tribu de Benjamín, ciento ochenta mil hombres, guerreros escogidos, con el fin de combatir contra la casa de Israel, y devolver el reino a Roboam hijo de Salomón.
22 Pero vino palabra de Jehová a Semaías varón de Dios, diciendo:
23 Habla a Roboam hijo de Salomón, rey de Judá, y a toda la casa de Judá y de Benjamín, y a los demás del pueblo, diciendo:
24 Así ha dicho Jehová: No vayáis, ni peleéis contra vuestros hermanos los hijos de Israel; volveos cada uno a su casa, porque esto lo he hecho yo. Y ellos oyeron la palabra de Dios, y volvieron y se fueron, conforme a la palabra de Jehová.
El pecado de Jeroboam
25 Entonces Jeroboam reedificó Siquem en el monte de Efraín, y habitó en ella; y saliendo de allí, fortificó Penuel.
26 Y dijo Jeroboam en su corazón: Ahora se volverá el reino a la casa de David,
27 si este pueblo continúa subiendo a ofrecer sacrificios en la casa de Jehová en Jerusalén; porque el corazón de este pueblo se volverá a su señor Roboam rey de Judá, y me matarán a mí, y se volverán a Roboam rey de Judá.
28 Y habiendo tenido consejo, hizo el rey dos becerros de oro, y dijo al pueblo: Bastante habéis subido a Jerusalén; he aquí tus dioses, oh Israel, los cuales te hicieron subir de la tierra de Egipto.
29 Y puso uno en Betel, y el otro en Dan.
30 Y esto fue causa de pecado; porque el pueblo iba a adorar delante de uno u otro hasta Dan.
31 Hizo también casas sobre los lugares altos, e hizo sacerdotes de entre el pueblo, que no eran de los hijos de Leví.
32 Entonces instituyó Jeroboam fiesta solemne en el mes octavo, a los quince días del mes, conforme a la fiesta solemne que se celebraba en Judá; y sacrificó sobre un altar. Así hizo en Betel, ofreciendo sacrificios a los becerros que había hecho. Ordenó también en Betel sacerdotes para los lugares altos que él había construido.
33 Sacrificó, pues, sobre el altar que él había hecho en Betel, a los quince días del mes octavo, el mes que él había inventado de su propio corazón; e hizo fiesta a los hijos de Israel, y subió al altar para quemar incienso.

Rehoboam Forsakes the Elders’ Counsel
12 (A)Then Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had come to (B)Shechem to make him king. 2 And it happened, (C)when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it, [a]he was living in Egypt (for he was yet in Egypt, where he had fled from the presence of King Solomon). 3 Then they sent and called for him. And Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam, saying, 4 “(D)Your father made our yoke harsh; but you, now, lighten the harsh service of your father and his heavy yoke which he put on us, and we will serve you.” 5 Then he said to them, “(E)Go [b]for three days, then return to me.” So the people went away.
6 Then King Rehoboam (F)took counsel with the elders who had stood before his father Solomon while he was still alive, saying, “How do you counsel me to respond to this people?” 7 And they spoke to him, saying, “(G)If you will be a servant to this people today, and will serve them and [c]grant them their petition, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever.” 8 But he forsook the counsel of the elders which they had counseled him, and took counsel with the young men who grew up with him and stood before him. 9 So he said to them, “What counsel do you give that we may respond to this people who have spoken to me, saying, ‘Lighten the yoke which your father put on us’?” 10 Then the young men who grew up with him spoke to him, saying, “Thus you shall say to this people who spoke to you, saying, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, now you make it lighter for us!’ Thus you shall speak to them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s loins! 11 So now, my father loaded you with a heavy yoke, but I will add to your yoke; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.’”
12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day as the king had spoken, saying, “(H)Return to me on the third day.” 13 And the king answered the people harshly, and he forsook the counsel of the elders which they had [d]given him, 14 and he spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, “(I)My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.” 15 So the king did not listen to the people; (J)for it was a turn of events from Yahweh, (K)that He might establish His word, which Yahweh spoke through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
Israel Rebels Against Judah
16 Then all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them. So the people responded to the king with this word, saying,
“What portion do we have in David?
We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse;
(L)To your tents, O Israel!
Now see to your own house, David!”
So Israel went to their tents. 17 But (M)as for the sons of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them. 18 Then King Rehoboam sent (N)Adoram, who was over the forced labor, and all Israel [e]stoned him and he died. And King Rehoboam made haste to mount his chariot to flee to Jerusalem. 19 (O)So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.
20 Now it happened when all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, that they sent and called him to the congregation and made him king over all Israel. (P)None but the tribe of Judah followed the house of David.
21 (Q)Then Rehoboam came to Jerusalem and assembled all the house of Judah and the tribe of Benjamin, 180,000 chosen men who could wage war, to fight against the house of Israel to return the kingdom to Rehoboam the son of Solomon. 22 But the word of God came to (R)Shemaiah the man of God, saying, 23 “Speak to Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all the house of Judah and Benjamin and to the (S)rest of the people, saying, 24 ‘Thus says Yahweh, “You shall not go up and fight against your brothers, the sons of Israel; return every man to his house, (T)for this thing is from Me.”’” So they listened to the word of Yahweh, and returned to go their way according to the word of Yahweh.
Jeroboam Makes Golden Calves
25 Then (U)Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and lived [f]there. And he went out from there and built (V)Penuel. 26 And Jeroboam said in his heart, “Now the kingdom will return to the house of David. 27 (W)If this people go up to offer sacrifices in the house of Yahweh at Jerusalem, then the heart of this people will return to their lord, even to Rehoboam king of Judah; and they will kill me and return to Rehoboam king of Judah.” 28 So the king took counsel, and (X)made two golden (Y)calves, and he said to them, “It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem; (Z)behold your gods, O Israel, that brought you up from the land of Egypt.” 29 And he set (AA)one in (AB)Bethel, and one he put in (AC)Dan. 30 Now (AD)this thing became a sin, for the people went to worship before the one as far as Dan. 31 And (AE)he made houses on high places, and (AF)made priests from among [g]all the people who were not of the sons of Levi. 32 And Jeroboam made a feast in the eighth month on the fifteenth day of the month, (AG)like the feast which is in Judah, and he [h]went up to the altar; thus he did in Bethel, to sacrifice to the calves which he had made. And he had (AH)the priests of the high places, which he had made, stand in Bethel. 33 Then he [i]went up to the altar which he had made in Bethel on the fifteenth day in the eighth month, even in the month which he had [j](AI)devised [k]in his own heart; and he made a feast for the sons of Israel and [l]went up to the altar (AJ)to burn [m]incense.

12 Rechav‘am went to Sh’khem, where all Isra’el had come to proclaim him king. 2 When Yarov‘am the son of N’vat heard of it — for he was still in Egypt, where he had fled from Shlomo; so Yarov‘am was living in Egypt; 3 but they sent and summoned him — Yarov‘am and the whole community of Isra’el came and said to Rechav‘am, 4 “Your father laid a harsh yoke on us. But if you will lighten the harsh service we had to render your father and ease his heavy yoke that he put on us, we will serve you.” 5 He said to them, “Leave me alone for three days, then come back to me.” So the people left.
6 King Rechav‘am consulted the older men who had been in attendance on Shlomo his father during his lifetime and asked, “What advice would you give me as to how to answer these people?” 7 They said to him, “If you will start today being a servant to these people — if you will serve them, be responsive to them and give them favorable consideration, then they will be your servants forever.” 8 But he didn’t take the advice the older men gave him; instead he consulted the young men he had grown up with, who were now his attendants. 9 He asked them, “What advice would you give me, so that we can give an answer to these people who said to me, ‘Lighten the yoke that your father laid on us’?” 10 The young men he had grown up with said to him, “These people who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy; but you, make it lighter for us’ — here’s the answer you should give them: ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist! 11 Yes, my father burdened you with a heavy yoke, but I will make it heavier! My father controlled you with whips, but I will control you with scorpions!’”
12 So Yarov‘am and all the people came to Rechav‘am the third day, as the king had requested by saying, “Come to me again the third day”; 13 and the king answered the people harshly. Abandoning the advice the older men had given him, 14 he addressed them according to the advice of the young men and said, “My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke! My father controlled you with whips, but I will control you with scorpions!” 15 So the king didn’t listen to the people; and that was something Adonai brought about, so that he could fulfill his word, which Adonai had spoken through Achiyah from Shiloh to Yarov‘am the son of N’vat.
16 When all Isra’el saw that the king wasn’t listening to them, the people answered the king,
“Do we have any share in David?
We have no heritage in the son of Yishai!
Go to your tents, Isra’el!
Care for your own house, David!”
So Isra’el left for their tents.
17 But as for the people of Isra’el living in the cities of Y’hudah, Rechav‘am ruled over them. 18 King Rechav‘am then sent Adoram, who was in charge of forced labor; but all Isra’el stoned him to death. King Rechav‘am managed to mount his chariot and flee to Yerushalayim. 19 Isra’el has been in rebellion against the dynasty of David to this day.
20 On hearing that Yarov‘am had returned, all Isra’el summoned him to the assembly and proclaimed him king over all Isra’el. No one followed the dynasty of David except the tribe of Y’hudah.
21 When Rechav‘am arrived in Yerushalayim, he assembled all the house of Y’hudah and the tribe of Binyamin, 180,000 select soldiers, to fight the house of Isra’el and bring the rulership back to Rechav‘am the son of Shlomo. 22 But this word from God came to Sh’ma‘yah the man of God: 23 “Speak to Rechav‘am the son of Shlomo, king of Y’hudah, to all the house of Y’hudah and Binyamin and to the rest of the people; tell them 24 that this is what Adonai says: ‘You are not to go up and fight your brothers the people of Isra’el! Every man is to go back home, because this is my doing.’” They paid attention to the word of Adonai and turned back, as Adonai had told them to do.
25 Then Yarov‘am built up Sh’khem in the hills of Efrayim and lived there. After that, he left and built up P’nu’el. 26 Nevertheless Yarov‘am said to himself, “Now the rulership will return to the house of David. 27 For if these people continue going up to offer sacrifices in the house of Adonai in Yerushalayim, their hearts will turn back to their lord, Rechav‘am king of Y’hudah. Then they will kill me and return to Rechav‘am king of Y’hudah.” 28 After seeking advice, the king made two calves of gold and said to the people, “You have been going up to Yerushalayim long enough! Here are your gods, Isra’el, who brought you out of the land of Egypt!” 29 He placed one in Beit-El and the other in Dan, 30 and the affair became a sin, for the people went to worship before the one [in Beit-El and] all the way to Dan [to worship the other]. 31 He also set up temples on the high places and made cohanim from among all the people, even though they were not descended from Levi.
32 Yarov‘am instituted a festival in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, similar to the festival held in Y’hudah; he went up to the altar in Beit-El to sacrifice to the calves he had made; and he placed in Beit-El the cohanim he had appointed for the high places. 33 He went up to the altar which he had set up in Beit-El on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, in the month which he had chosen on his own, and instituted a festival for the people of Isra’el; he went up to the altar to burn incense.
