La reina de Sabá visita a Salomón(A)

10 La reina de Sabá se enteró de la fama de Salomón, con la cual él honraba el nombre del Señor, así que fue a verlo para ponerlo a prueba con preguntas difíciles. 2 Llegó a Jerusalén con un séquito muy grande. Sus camellos llevaban perfumes y grandes cantidades de oro y piedras preciosas. Al presentarse ante Salomón, le preguntó todo lo que tenía pensado, 3 y él respondió a todas sus preguntas. No hubo ningún asunto, por difícil que fuera, que el rey no pudiera resolver.

4 Cuando la reina de Sabá vio toda la sabiduría de Salomón, el palacio que él había construido, 5 los manjares de su mesa, los asientos que ocupaban sus funcionarios, la ropa de los camareros y los coperos, y los holocaustos que ofrecía en el Templo[a] del Señor, quedó muy impresionada.

6 Entonces dijo al rey: «¡Todo lo que escuché en mi país acerca de tus triunfos y de tu sabiduría es cierto! 7 No podía creer nada de eso hasta que vine y lo vi con mis propios ojos. En realidad, ¡no me habían contado ni siquiera la mitad! Tanto en sabiduría como en riqueza, superas todo lo que había oído decir. 8 ¡Dichosos tus súbditos! ¡Dichosos estos servidores tuyos, que constantemente están en tu presencia bebiendo de tu sabiduría! 9 ¡Y alabado sea el Señor tu Dios, que se ha deleitado en ti y te ha puesto en el trono de Israel! En su eterno amor por Israel, el Señor te ha hecho rey para que gobiernes con justicia y rectitud».

10 Luego la reina le regaló a Salomón ciento veinte talentos[b] de oro, piedras preciosas y gran cantidad de perfumes. Nunca más llegaron a Israel tantos perfumes como los que la reina de Sabá obsequió al rey Salomón.

11 La flota de Hiram trajo desde Ofir, además del oro, grandes cargamentos de madera de sándalo y de piedras preciosas. 12 Con la madera, el rey construyó barandas para el Templo del Señor y para el palacio real. También hizo arpas y liras para los músicos. Desde entonces, nunca más se ha importado ni ha vuelto a verse tanto sándalo como aquel día.

13 El rey Salomón, por su parte, dio a la reina de Sabá todo lo que a ella se le antojó pedirle, además de lo que él, en su magnanimidad, ya le había regalado. Después de eso, la reina regresó a su país con todos los que la atendían.

El esplendor de Salomón(B)

14 La cantidad de oro que Salomón recibía anualmente llegaba a seiscientos sesenta y seis talentos,[c] 15 sin contar los impuestos aportados por los mercaderes, el tráfico comercial, y por todos los reyes árabes y los gobernadores del país.

16 El rey Salomón hizo doscientos escudos grandes de oro batido, en cada uno de los cuales se emplearon seiscientos siclos[d] de oro. 17 Hizo además trescientos escudos más pequeños, también de oro batido, empleando en cada uno de ellos tres minas[e] de oro. Estos escudos los puso el rey en el palacio llamado «Bosque del Líbano».

18 El rey hizo también un gran trono de marfil, recubierto de oro puro. 19 El trono tenía seis peldaños, un espaldar redondo, brazos a cada lado del asiento, dos leones de pie junto a los brazos 20 y doce leones de pie sobre los seis peldaños, uno en cada extremo. En ningún otro reino se había hecho algo semejante. 21 Todas las copas del rey Salomón y toda la vajilla del palacio «Bosque del Líbano» eran de oro puro. Nada estaba hecho de plata, pues en tiempos de Salomón la plata era poco apreciada. 22 Cada tres años, la flota comercial que el rey tenía en el mar, junto con la flota de Hiram, regresaba de Tarsis trayendo oro, plata y marfil, monos y mandriles.[f]

23 Tanto en riquezas como en sabiduría, el rey Salomón sobrepasó a los demás reyes de la tierra. 24 Todo el mundo procuraba visitarlo para oír la sabiduría que Dios le había dado. 25 Además, año tras año le llevaban regalos: artículos de plata y de oro, vestidos, armas, perfumes, caballos y mulas.

26 Salomón acumuló carros y caballos; llegó a tener mil cuatrocientos carros y doce mil caballos,[g] los cuales mantenía en las caballerizas y también en su palacio en Jerusalén. 27 El rey hizo que la plata fuera en Jerusalén tan común y corriente como las piedras, y el cedro tan abundante como las higueras de la llanura. 28 Los caballos de Salomón eran importados de Egipto y de Coa, que era donde los mercaderes de la corte los compraban. 29 Un carro importado de Egipto costaba seiscientos siclos[h] de plata; un caballo, ciento cincuenta.[i] Además, estos carros y caballos se los vendían a todos los reyes hititas y arameos.

10 Oyendo la reina de Sabá(A) la fama que Salomón había alcanzado por el nombre de Jehová, vino a probarle con preguntas difíciles. 2 Y vino a Jerusalén con un séquito muy grande, con camellos cargados de especias, y oro en gran abundancia, y piedras preciosas; y cuando vino a Salomón, le expuso todo lo que en su corazón tenía. 3 Y Salomón le contestó todas sus preguntas, y nada hubo que el rey no le contestase. 4 Y cuando la reina de Sabá vio toda la sabiduría de Salomón, y la casa que había edificado, 5 asimismo la comida de su mesa, las habitaciones de sus oficiales, el estado y los vestidos de los que le servían, sus maestresalas, y sus holocaustos que ofrecía en la casa de Jehová, se quedó asombrada.

6 Y dijo al rey: Verdad es lo que oí en mi tierra de tus cosas y de tu sabiduría; 7 pero yo no lo creía, hasta que he venido, y mis ojos han visto que ni aun se me dijo la mitad; es mayor tu sabiduría y bien, que la fama que yo había oído. 8 Bienaventurados tus hombres, dichosos estos tus siervos, que están continuamente delante de ti, y oyen tu sabiduría. 9 Jehová tu Dios sea bendito, que se agradó de ti para ponerte en el trono de Israel; porque Jehová ha amado siempre a Israel, te ha puesto por rey, para que hagas derecho y justicia. 10 Y dio ella al rey ciento veinte talentos de oro, y mucha especiería, y piedras preciosas; nunca vino tan gran cantidad de especias, como la reina de Sabá dio al rey Salomón.

11 La flota de Hiram que había traído el oro de Ofir, traía también de Ofir mucha madera de sándalo, y piedras preciosas. 12 Y de la madera de sándalo hizo el rey balaustres para la casa de Jehová y para las casas reales, arpas también y salterios para los cantores; nunca vino semejante madera de sándalo, ni se ha visto hasta hoy.

13 Y el rey Salomón dio a la reina de Sabá todo lo que ella quiso, y todo lo que pidió, además de lo que Salomón le dio. Y ella se volvió, y se fue a su tierra con sus criados.

Riquezas y fama de Salomón

(2 Cr. 9.13-24)

14 El peso del oro que Salomón tenía de renta cada año, era seiscientos sesenta y seis talentos de oro; 15 sin lo de los mercaderes, y lo de la contratación de especias, y lo de todos los reyes de Arabia, y de los principales de la tierra. 16 Hizo también el rey Salomón doscientos escudos grandes de oro batido; seiscientos siclos de oro gastó en cada escudo. 17 Asimismo hizo trescientos escudos de oro batido, en cada uno de los cuales gastó tres libras de oro; y el rey los puso en la casa del bosque del Líbano. 18 Hizo también el rey un gran trono de marfil, el cual cubrió de oro purísimo. 19 Seis gradas tenía el trono, y la parte alta era redonda por el respaldo; y a uno y otro lado tenía brazos cerca del asiento, junto a los cuales estaban colocados dos leones. 20 Estaban también doce leones puestos allí sobre las seis gradas, de un lado y de otro; en ningún otro reino se había hecho trono semejante. 21 Y todos los vasos de beber del rey Salomón eran de oro, y asimismo toda la vajilla de la casa del bosque del Líbano era de oro fino; nada de plata, porque en tiempo de Salomón no era apreciada. 22 Porque el rey tenía en el mar una flota de naves de Tarsis, con la flota de Hiram. Una vez cada tres años venía la flota de Tarsis, y traía oro, plata, marfil, monos y pavos reales.

23 Así excedía el rey Salomón a todos los reyes de la tierra en riquezas y en sabiduría. 24 Toda la tierra procuraba ver la cara de Salomón, para oír la sabiduría que Dios había puesto en su corazón. 25 Y todos le llevaban cada año sus presentes: alhajas de oro y de plata, vestidos, armas, especias aromáticas, caballos y mulos.

Salomón comercia en caballos y en carros

26 Y juntó Salomón carros y gente de a caballo; y tenía mil cuatrocientos carros, y doce mil jinetes,(B) los cuales puso en las ciudades de los carros, y con el rey en Jerusalén. 27 E hizo el rey que en Jerusalén la plata llegara a ser como piedras,(C) y los cedros como cabrahígos de la Sefela en abundancia. 28 Y traían de Egipto caballos y lienzos a Salomón;(D) porque la compañía de los mercaderes del rey compraba caballos y lienzos. 29 Y venía y salía de Egipto, el carro por seiscientas piezas de plata, y el caballo por ciento cincuenta; y así los adquirían por mano de ellos todos los reyes de los heteos, y de Siria.

The Queen of Sheba

10 The Queen of Sheba heard news that Solomon was a great king who served the Lord.[a] So she came to ask Solomon some difficult questions to see how wise he was. 2 She arrived at Jerusalem with a big group of servants. She had many camels that carried spices. They also carried a lot of gold and valuable jewels. When she came to Solomon, she talked to him about everything that was in her mind. 3 Solomon answered all her questions. There was nothing that was too difficult for the king to explain to her. 4 The Queen of Sheba saw that Solomon was very wise.[b] She saw the palace that he had built. 5 She saw all the food that he ate in his palace. She saw all his servants and officers and their beautiful clothes. She saw the servants who prepared his food and wine. She saw the burnt offerings that he offered in the Lord's temple. All these things caused her to hold her breath in surprise. 6 She said to the king, ‘In my own country I heard news about your wisdom and about all the things that you had done. Everything that I heard was true! 7 But I did not believe those things until I came here. Now I have seen everything with my own eyes, and it is true! Really, they told me less than half of what was true! You are even wiser and richer than the report that people told me. 8 God has blessed your people and your officers! They are always with you, and they can listen to your wise words. 9 So we praise the Lord your God! He is happy with you and he has chosen you to rule Israel. The Lord's love for Israel will continue for ever. So he has made you king to rule in a fair and honest way.’

10 The Queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon more than 4,000 kilograms of gold, a lot of spices and many valuable jewels. Nobody has ever brought such a big number of spices as she gave to the king.

11 Hiram's ships had brought gold from Ophir. They also brought from there large loads of good wood, and valuable jewels. 12 The king used the wood to make steps for the Lord's temple and for the king's palace. He also used it to make harps and lyres for the musicians. Nobody has ever seen such valuable wood, even until today.

13 So King Solomon gave the Queen of Sheba all the gifts that he chose for her. He gave her everything that she wanted. Then she left Solomon and she returned to her own country with her servants.

Solomon's riches

14 Solomon received 25 tons of gold each year.

15 He also received money from traders, from the kings of Arabia and from the rulers of each region in Israel.

16 King Solomon's workers used gold to make 200 large shields. They hit the gold with hammers to make it flat. They used about four kilograms of gold to cover each shield. 17 They also made 300 small shields in the same way. They used about 2 kilograms of gold to cover each shield. He put these shields in the Palace of the Forest of Lebanon.[c]

18 The king used ivory to make a large throne. He covered it with gold. 19 There were six steps up to the throne. The back of the throne was a round shape at the top. On both sides of the seat there were places for the king to put his arms. An image of a lion stood on each side of the throne. 20 There were 12 more images of lions on the six steps. There was one lion at each end of every step. There was no throne like it in any other kingdom. 21 They used gold to make all King Solomon's cups that he drank from. In the Palace of the Forest of Lebanon, all the dishes and other things were made with gold. They used pure gold. They did not make anything with silver. In Solomon's time, people did not think that silver was very valuable.

22 The king had many large ships that could sail across the seas.[d] They sailed with King Hiram's ships. Every three years they returned to Solomon with their loads. They brought to him gold, silver and ivory. They also brought apes and monkeys.[e]

23 King Solomon was richer and wiser than any other king in the world. 24 People from every nation in the world wanted to talk to Solomon. They wanted to listen to the wisdom that God had given to him. 25 Every year, people who came to visit Solomon brought him gifts. They brought things that were made from silver and gold, as well as clothes, weapons, spices, horses and mules.

26 Solomon brought together many chariots and horses for his soldiers to ride. He had 1,400 chariots and 12,000 horses. He kept some of them in Jerusalem where he lived as king. He put the others in cities that he had chosen for this.

27 While Solomon ruled as king, there was as much silver in Jerusalem as stones! There was as much wood from cedar trees as there were fig trees that grew in the low hills in the west. 28 Solomon brought his horses from Egypt and from Kue. He sent traders to Kue to buy them for him. 29 Each chariot that they bought in Egypt cost 600 pieces of silver. Each horse cost 150 pieces of silver. They also sold chariots and horses to all the kings of the Hittites and to the kings of Syria.

The Queen of Sheba Visits Solomon(A)

10 When the queen of Sheba(B) heard about the fame(C) of Solomon and his relationship to the Lord, she came to test Solomon with hard questions.(D) 2 Arriving at Jerusalem with a very great caravan(E)—with camels carrying spices, large quantities of gold, and precious stones—she came to Solomon and talked with him about all that she had on her mind. 3 Solomon answered all her questions; nothing was too hard for the king to explain to her. 4 When the queen of Sheba saw all the wisdom of Solomon and the palace he had built, 5 the food on his table,(F) the seating of his officials, the attending servants in their robes, his cupbearers, and the burnt offerings he made at[a] the temple of the Lord, she was overwhelmed.

6 She said to the king, “The report I heard in my own country about your achievements and your wisdom is true. 7 But I did not believe(G) these things until I came and saw with my own eyes. Indeed, not even half was told me; in wisdom and wealth(H) you have far exceeded the report I heard. 8 How happy your people must be! How happy your officials, who continually stand before you and hear(I) your wisdom! 9 Praise(J) be to the Lord your God, who has delighted in you and placed you on the throne of Israel. Because of the Lord’s eternal love(K) for Israel, he has made you king to maintain justice(L) and righteousness.”

10 And she gave the king 120 talents[b] of gold,(M) large quantities of spices, and precious stones. Never again were so many spices brought in as those the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon.

11 (Hiram’s ships brought gold from Ophir;(N) and from there they brought great cargoes of almugwood[c] and precious stones. 12 The king used the almugwood to make supports[d] for the temple of the Lord and for the royal palace, and to make harps and lyres for the musicians. So much almugwood has never been imported or seen since that day.)

13 King Solomon gave the queen of Sheba all she desired and asked for, besides what he had given her out of his royal bounty. Then she left and returned with her retinue to her own country.

Solomon’s Splendor(O)

14 The weight of the gold(P) that Solomon received yearly was 666 talents,[e] 15 not including the revenues from merchants and traders and from all the Arabian kings and the governors of the territories.

16 King Solomon made two hundred large shields(Q) of hammered gold; six hundred shekels[f] of gold went into each shield. 17 He also made three hundred small shields of hammered gold, with three minas[g] of gold in each shield. The king put them in the Palace of the Forest of Lebanon.(R)

18 Then the king made a great throne covered with ivory and overlaid with fine gold. 19 The throne had six steps, and its back had a rounded top. On both sides of the seat were armrests, with a lion standing beside each of them. 20 Twelve lions stood on the six steps, one at either end of each step. Nothing like it had ever been made for any other kingdom. 21 All King Solomon’s goblets were gold, and all the household articles in the Palace of the Forest of Lebanon were pure gold.(S) Nothing was made of silver, because silver was considered of little value in Solomon’s days. 22 The king had a fleet of trading ships[h](T) at sea along with the ships(U) of Hiram. Once every three years it returned, carrying gold, silver and ivory, and apes and baboons.

23 King Solomon was greater in riches(V) and wisdom(W) than all the other kings of the earth. 24 The whole world sought audience with Solomon to hear the wisdom(X) God had put in his heart. 25 Year after year, everyone who came brought a gift(Y)—articles of silver and gold, robes, weapons and spices, and horses and mules.

26 Solomon accumulated chariots and horses;(Z) he had fourteen hundred chariots and twelve thousand horses,[i] which he kept in the chariot cities and also with him in Jerusalem. 27 The king made silver as common(AA) in Jerusalem as stones,(AB) and cedar as plentiful as sycamore-fig(AC) trees in the foothills. 28 Solomon’s horses were imported from Egypt and from Kue[j]—the royal merchants purchased them from Kue at the current price. 29 They imported a chariot from Egypt for six hundred shekels of silver, and a horse for a hundred and fifty.[k] They also exported them to all the kings of the Hittites(AD) and of the Arameans.
