Salomón, sucesor de David (1—2)
Vejez de David y complot de Adonías
1 El rey David era ya un anciano entrado en años y, aunque lo cubrían con mantas, no entraba en calor. 2 Entonces sus servidores le dijeron:
— Hay que buscar a nuestro señor, el rey, una muchacha virgen que lo atienda, lo cuide y duerma a su lado para que nuestro señor el rey entre en calor.
3 Buscaron una muchacha hermosa por todo el territorio de Israel, encontraron a Abisag la sunamita y se la llevaron al rey. 4 La muchacha, que era muy hermosa, cuidaba al rey y lo servía; pero el rey no tuvo relaciones con ella.
5 Adonías, hijo de Jaguit, presumiendo de que él sería el rey, se procuró un carro, caballos y una escolta de cincuenta hombres. 6 Su padre David nunca le había regañado ni le pedía cuentas de lo que hacía, pues había nacido después de Absalón y era también muy atractivo. 7 Adonías se había confabulado con Joab, el hijo de Seruyá, y con el sacerdote Abiatar, que secundaban sus propósitos. 8 En cambio, el sacerdote Sadoc, Benaías, el hijo de Joyadá, el profeta Natán, Simeí, Reí y los valientes de David no estaban a favor de Adonías.
9 Un día Adonías fue a sacrificar corderos, toros y terneros cebados a la piedra de Zojélet, cerca de la fuente de Roguel. Invitó al sacrificio a todos sus hermanos, los hijos del rey, y a todos los hombres de Judá que estaban al servicio del rey; 10 pero no invitó al profeta Natán, ni a Benaías, ni a los paladines, ni a su hermano Salomón.
11 Entonces Natán dijo a Betsabé, la madre de Salomón:
— ¿No has oído que Adonías, el hijo de Jaguit, se ha proclamado rey sin que lo sepa David, nuestro señor? 12 Ahora voy a darte un consejo, para que puedas salvar tu vida y la de tu hijo Salomón. 13 Preséntate ante el rey David y dile: “Majestad, tú juraste a una servidora que mi hijo Salomón te sucedería como rey y se sentaría en tu trono. ¿Por qué, entonces, se ha proclamado rey Adonías?”. 14 Y mientras estés tú allí hablando con el rey, yo entraré detrás y confirmaré tus palabras.
15 Inmediatamente Betsabé se presentó en la alcoba real. El rey estaba muy viejo, atendido por Abisag, la sunamita. 16 Betsabé se inclinó ante el rey y le hizo una reverencia. El rey le preguntó:
— ¿Qué quieres?
17 Ella le respondió:
— Señor, tú le juraste a tu servidora por el Señor, tu Dios, que mi hijo Salomón te sucedería como rey y se sentaría en tu trono; 18 y ahora resulta que Adonías ha sido proclamado rey sin que mi señor, el rey, lo sepa. 19 Ha sacrificado toros, terneros cebados y corderos en cantidad y ha invitado a todos los hijos del rey, al sacerdote Abiatar y al jefe del ejército Joab, pero no ha invitado a tu siervo Salomón. 20 Ahora, majestad, todo Israel está pendiente de ti y de que les anuncies quién va a suceder en el trono al rey, mi señor. 21 Pues, cuando el rey, mi señor, vaya a reunirse con sus padres, yo y mi hijo Salomón quedaremos como culpables.
22 Todavía estaba ella hablando con el rey, cuando llegó Natán 23 y lo anunciaron al rey:
— Está aquí el profeta Natán.
Natán se presentó ante el rey, le hizo una reverencia inclinando su rostro 24 y le dijo:
— Majestad, ¿has decretado tú que Adonías te suceda como rey y se siente en tu trono? 25 Porque hoy ha ido a sacrificar toros, terneros cebados y corderos en cantidad, ha invitado a todos los hijos del rey, a los capitanes del ejército y al sacerdote Abiatar; ahora están comiendo y bebiendo con él mientras lo aclaman: “¡Viva el rey Adonías!”. 26 Pero no me ha invitado a mí, ni al sacerdote Sadoc, ni a Benaías, el hijo de Joyadá, ni a tu siervo Salomón. 27 ¿Acaso mi señor, el rey, ha tomado tal decisión sin haber comunicado a sus servidores quién le sucedería en el trono?
28 El rey David ordenó:
— Llamen a Betsabé.
Betsabé se presentó al rey y se quedó de pie ante él. 29 Entonces David hizo este juramento:
— ¡Vive Dios que me ha salvado de todos los peligros! 30 Hoy mismo voy a cumplir lo que te juré ante el Señor, Dios de Israel, cuando te prometí que tu hijo Salomón me sucedería como rey y se sentaría en el trono en mi lugar.
31 Betsabé se inclinó rostro en tierra, hizo una reverencia al rey y dijo:
— ¡Viva siempre mi señor, el rey David!
32 Luego David ordenó:
— Llámenme al sacerdote Sadoc, al profeta Natán y a Benaías, el hijo de Joyadá.
Ellos se presentaron ante el rey 33 y él les dijo:
— Tomen con ustedes a los servidores reales, suban a Salomón en mi propia mula y llévenlo a Guijón. 34 Una vez allí, el sacerdote Sadoc y el profeta Natán lo consagrarán como rey de Israel. Entonces tocarán la trompeta y gritarán: “¡Viva el rey Salomón!”. 35 Luego subirán tras él, y cuando llegue aquí se sentará en mi trono y empezará a reinar en mi lugar, pues lo he designado jefe de Israel y de Judá. 36 Benaías, el hijo de Joyadá, respondió al rey:
— ¡Amén! Que así lo decrete el Señor, Dios de mi señor, el rey. 37 Que el Señor esté con Salomón como lo ha estado con mi señor, el rey, y que haga su reino más poderoso que el reino de mi señor, el rey David.
38 Entonces el sacerdote Sadoc, el profeta Natán, Benaías, el hijo de Joyadá, los quereteos y los peleteos fueron a montar a Salomón en la mula del rey David y lo llevaron a Guijón. 39 El sacerdote Sadoc tomó el cuerno de aceite del santuario y consagró a Salomón. Después hicieron sonar la trompeta y toda la gente se puso a gritar:
— ¡Viva el rey Salomón!
40 Luego todos subieron tras él al son de trompetas y con tanto alboroto que la tierra parecía temblar con sus gritos.
41 Adonías y todos sus invitados lo oyeron cuando acababan de comer. Joab escuchó el sonido de la trompeta y dijo:
— ¿Por qué hay tanto alboroto en la ciudad?
42 Mientras hablaba llegó Jonatán, el hijo del sacerdote Abiatar, y Adonías le dijo:
— Entra, que tú eres persona influyente y traerás buenas noticias.
43 Pero Jonatán le respondió:
— ¡Todo lo contrario! Nuestro señor, el rey David, ha proclamado rey a Salomón. 44 El rey ha mandado al sacerdote Sadoc, al profeta Natán, a Benaías, el hijo de Joyadá, a los quereteos y a los peleteos y lo han montado en la mula del rey. 45 Luego el sacerdote Sadoc y el profeta Natán lo han consagrado en Guijón y han subido desde allí muy alegres. La ciudad anda alborotada: esa es la razón del griterío que han oído. 46 Además, Salomón ha tomado posesión del reino 47 y los servidores reales han ido a felicitar al rey David, diciendo: “¡Que tu Dios haga a Salomón más famoso que a ti, y que haga su reino más poderoso que el tuyo!”. Incluso el rey ha hecho una reverencia en su lecho 48 y ha dicho: “¡Bendito sea el Señor, Dios de Israel, que ha permitido hoy que alguien se siente en mi trono y que yo lo pueda ver!”.
49 Todos los invitados de Adonías se echaron a temblar, se levantaron y se dispersaron. 50 Adonías, temiendo a Salomón, se levantó y fue a refugiarse al amparo del altar. 51 Alguien informó a Salomón:
— Adonías, por miedo al rey Salomón, se ha refugiado al amparo del altar, pidiendo al rey que le jure hoy mismo que no va a matar a su siervo.
52 Salomón respondió:
— Si actúa como un hombre de bien, no se le tocará ni un pelo; pero, si se le descubre en falta, morirá.
53 Entonces el rey Salomón mandó que lo sacaran del altar. Luego él llegó a rendirle homenaje. Pero Salomón le dijo:
— ¡Vete a tu casa!

Ancianidad de David
1 El rey David era ya anciano, de edad muy avanzada. Aunque lo cubrían y arropaban bien, no podía entrar en calor. 2 Por esto, sus servidores le dijeron: «Debe buscarse para Su Majestad una muchacha soltera que le sirva y lo cuide, y que duerma con Su Majestad para que le dé calor.»
3 Buscaron una muchacha hermosa por todo el territorio de Israel, y hallaron una que se llamaba Abisag, del pueblo de Sunem, la cual llevaron al rey. 4 Abisag era muy hermosa, y cuidaba al rey y le servía, pero el rey nunca tuvo relaciones sexuales con ella.
Adonías se proclama rey
5 Entre tanto, Adonías, hijo de David y de Haguit, se levantó en armas y dijo que él sería rey. Se hizo de carros de combate, y de caballería, y de una guardia personal de cincuenta hombres. 6 Su padre no lo había contrariado en toda su vida, ni le había preguntado por qué hacía lo que hacía. Adonías, que había nacido después de Absalón, era muy bien parecido. 7 Había hecho un trato con Joab, el hijo de Seruiá, y con el sacerdote Abiatar, los cuales le apoyaban. 8 Pero ni el sacerdote Sadoc, ni Benaías, hijo de Joiadá, ni el profeta Natán, ni Simí, hombre de confianza del rey, ni los mejores soldados de David estaban a favor de Adonías.
9 Por aquel tiempo, Adonías preparó un banquete junto a la peña de Zohélet, que está cerca del manantial de Roguel. Mató ovejas y toros y los becerros más gordos, e invitó a todos sus hermanos, hijos del rey, y a todos los hombres de Judá que estaban al servicio del rey; 10 pero no invitó al profeta Natán, ni a Benaías, ni a los soldados de David, ni a su hermano Salomón. 11 Entonces habló Natán con Betsabé, la madre de Salomón, y le dijo:
—¿No te has enterado de que Adonías, el hijo de Haguit, se ha proclamado rey sin que lo sepa David, nuestro señor? 12 Pues ven, que voy a darte un consejo para que puedas salvar tu vida y la de tu hijo Salomón. 13 Ve y preséntate al rey David, y dile: “Su Majestad me había jurado que mi hijo Salomón reinaría después de Su Majestad, y que subiría al trono. ¿Por qué, entonces, está reinando Adonías?” 14 Y mientras tú hablas con el rey, yo entraré y confirmaré tus palabras.
15 Betsabé fue entonces a ver al rey a su habitación. El rey ya estaba muy anciano, y Abisag la sunamita lo atendía. 16 Betsabé se inclinó ante el rey hasta tocar el suelo con la frente, y el rey le preguntó:
—¿Qué te pasa?
17 Ella le respondió:
—Su Majestad me juró por el Señor su Dios, que mi hijo Salomón reinaría después de Su Majestad, y que subiría al trono. 18 Pero sucede que Adonías se ha proclamado rey, y Su Majestad no lo sabe. 19 Ha matado toros y becerros y muchas ovejas, y ha invitado a los hijos de Su Majestad; también ha invitado al sacerdote Abiatar y a Joab, general del ejército, pero no ha invitado a Salomón, servidor de Su Majestad. 20 Ahora bien, señor, todo Israel está pendiente de que Su Majestad diga quién habrá de reinar después de Su Majestad. 21 De lo contrario, cuando Su Majestad muera, mi hijo Salomón y yo seremos condenados a muerte.
22 Mientras ella hablaba con el rey, llegó el profeta Natán, 23 y se lo hicieron saber al rey. Cuando el profeta se presentó ante el rey, se inclinó delante de él hasta tocar el suelo con la frente, 24 y le preguntó:
—¿Ha ordenado Su Majestad que Adonías reine después de Su Majestad? 25 Porque resulta que hoy ha bajado, ha matado toros y becerros y muchas ovejas, y ha convidado a los hijos de Su Majestad, a los capitanes del ejército y al sacerdote Abiatar. Y ahí están comiendo y bebiendo con él, y gritando: “¡Viva el rey Adonías!” 26 Sin embargo, no me han invitado a mí, ni al sacerdote Sadoc, ni a Benaías, hijo de Joiadá, ni a Salomón, hijo de Su Majestad. 27 ¿Acaso ha ordenado esto Su Majestad sin haber informado a este siervo suyo acerca de quién ocuparía el trono después de Su Majestad?
David declara a Salomón sucesor suyo
28 El rey David ordenó entonces que llamaran a Betsabé. Al llegar Betsabé ante el rey, se quedó de pie delante de él. 29 El rey hizo entonces el siguiente juramento:
—Juro por el Señor, que me ha librado de toda angustia, 30 que lo que te juré por el Señor, el Dios de Israel, te lo cumpliré hoy mismo: tu hijo Salomón subirá al trono en mi lugar y reinará después de mí.
31 Betsabé se inclinó ante el rey hasta tocar el suelo con la frente, y exclamó:
—¡Viva para siempre mi señor, el rey David!
32 Luego el rey David ordenó que llamaran al sacerdote Sadoc, al profeta Natán y a Benaías, hijo de Joiadá. Cuando éstos se presentaron ante el rey, 33 él les dijo:
—Háganse acompañar de los funcionarios del reino, monten a mi hijo Salomón en mi mula y llévenlo a Guihón; 34 y en cuanto el sacerdote Sadoc y el profeta Natán lo consagren como rey de Israel, toquen el cuerno de carnero y griten: “¡Viva el rey Salomón!” 35 Luego sírvanle de escolta, para que venga y se siente en mi trono y reine en mi lugar, pues he dispuesto que él sea el jefe de Israel y de Judá.
36 Benaías, el hijo de Joiadá, respondió al rey:
—¡Amén, y que así lo ordene el Señor, el Dios de Su Majestad! 37 Y del mismo modo que el Señor ha estado con Su Majestad, así esté con Salomón, y haga que su reino sea mayor aún que el de Su Majestad, mi señor David.
38 Luego el sacerdote Sadoc, el profeta Natán, Benaías, hijo de Joiadá, y los quereteos y los peleteos, fueron y montaron a Salomón en la mula del rey David, y lo llevaron a Guihón. 39 Allí el sacerdote Sadoc tomó del santuario el cuerno con el aceite y consagró como rey a Salomón. A continuación tocaron el cuerno de carnero, y todo el pueblo gritó: «¡Viva el rey Salomón!» 40 Luego todos lo siguieron, tocando flautas. Era tal su alegría que parecía que la tierra se partía en dos por causa de sus voces.
41 Adonías y todos sus invitados acababan de comer cuando oyeron el ruido. Al oír Joab el sonido del cuerno, comentó:
—¿Por qué habrá tanto alboroto en la ciudad?
42 Mientras él hablaba, llegó Jonatán, el hijo del sacerdote Abiatar. Adonías le dijo:
—Entra, pues tú eres un hombre importante y debes traer buenas noticias.
43 Jonatán respondió a Adonías:
—Al contrario. David, nuestro señor y rey, ha hecho rey a Salomón, 44 y ha ordenado que el sacerdote Sadoc y el profeta Natán, así como Benaías, hijo de Joiadá, y los quereteos y los peleteos, acompañen a Salomón; y ellos lo han montado en la mula del rey. 45 Además, el sacerdote Sadoc y el profeta Natán lo han consagrado como rey en Guihón, y han regresado de allí muy contentos. Por eso está alborotada la ciudad, y ése es el ruido que ustedes han escuchado. 46 Además, Salomón ya ha tomado posesión del trono, 47 y los funcionarios del rey David han ido a felicitarlo y a desearle que Dios haga prosperar a Salomón y extienda su dominio más que el suyo. Incluso el propio rey David se inclinó en su cama para adorar a Dios, 48 y dijo: “Bendito sea el Señor, el Dios de Israel, que ha permitido hoy que un descendiente mío suba al trono, y que yo lo vea.”
49 Los invitados de Adonías se pusieron a temblar; luego se levantaron todos, y cada uno se fue por su lado. 50 Adonías, por su parte, por miedo a Salomón se levantó y se fue al santuario, y allí buscó refugio agarrándose a los cuernos del altar. 51 Alguien fue a decirle a Salomón:
—Adonías tiene miedo de Su Majestad, y se ha refugiado en el altar. Pide que Su Majestad le jure ahora mismo que no lo va a matar.
52 Salomón respondió:
—Si se porta como un hombre de bien, no caerá al suelo ni un pelo de su cabeza; pero si se descubre alguna maldad en él, morirá.
53 En seguida Salomón mandó que lo retiraran del altar. Luego Adonías fue y se inclinó ante el rey Salomón, y éste le ordenó que se fuera a su casa.

El rey David
1 El rey David era muy anciano y, aunque lo cubrían con muchas cobijas, no se le quitaba el frío. 2 Entonces sus ayudantes le dijeron: «Debemos traer a una muchacha soltera para que sirva y cuide al rey. Que duerma en la misma cama, para que le dé calor».
3 Buscaron entonces en todo Israel una muchacha joven y hermosa, y en el pueblo de Sunem encontraron una que se llamaba Abisag. 4 Esta muchacha cuidaba al rey y lo servía, pero aunque era muy bonita, nunca tuvo relaciones sexuales con él.
Adonías quiere ser rey
5-7 Adonías, el hijo que David había tenido con Haguit, era un joven bien parecido. Había nacido poco después que su hermano Absalón. David nunca había corregido a Adonías ni le había preguntado por qué hacía esto o aquello. Y así, Adonías comenzó a presumir de que él sería el próximo rey de Israel. Preparó carros de combate, soldados de caballería y cincuenta guardaespaldas que lo protegieran. Además, buscó el apoyo del sacerdote Abiatar y de Joab, que era el jefe del ejército, e hizo un trato con ellos. La madre de Joab se llamaba Seruiá.
8 Pero ni el sacerdote Sadoc ni Benaías hijo de Joiadá, ni el profeta Natán ni Simí, hombre en quien el rey confiaba, ni los mejores soldados de David, apoyaban a Adonías.
9 Un día, Adonías preparó una fiesta e invitó a todos sus hermanos, los hijos del rey David, y a todos los hombres de Judá que eran asistentes del rey. La fiesta se celebró junto a la piedra de Zohélet, que está cerca del manantial de Roguel. Para el banquete mandó a matar ovejas y toros, y también los terneros más gordos. 10 Adonías no invitó a su hermano Salomón ni al profeta Natán, ni a Benaías ni a los soldados de David.
Betsabé habla en favor de Salomón
11 Entonces Natán le dijo a Betsabé, la madre de Salomón:
«¿Ya te enteraste? Adonías se ha nombrado rey, y nuestro señor David ni siquiera lo sabe. 12 Voy a darte un consejo que puede salvar tu vida y la de tu hijo Salomón. 13 Tienes que ir a ver al rey David y decirle: “Su Majestad había jurado que mi hijo Salomón reinaría después de usted. ¿Por qué, entonces, está reinando Adonías?” 14 Y mientras tú estés hablando con el rey, yo entraré y te apoyaré».
15 Betsabé fue a ver al rey a su habitación. El rey ya era muy anciano, y Abisag, la muchacha de Sunem, lo atendía. 16 Betsabé se inclinó delante del rey en señal de respeto. El rey le preguntó:
—¿Qué deseas?
17 Ella le contestó:
—Su Majestad, usted me juró por su Dios, que mi hijo Salomón reinaría después de usted. 18 Pero ahora Adonías se ha nombrado rey, y usted ni se ha enterado. 19 Él ha matado toros, terneros y muchas ovejas, para hacer una fiesta, y ha invitado a los hijos del rey, al sacerdote Abiatar y a Joab, el general del ejército. Pero no ha invitado a Salomón, su fiel servidor. 20 Todo el pueblo está esperando que Su Majestad diga quién va a reinar después de usted. 21 Si Su Majestad muere sin anunciar quién reinará, Adonías nos matará a mí y a mi hijo Salomón.
22 Mientras Betsabé estaba hablando con el rey, llegó el profeta Natán. 23 Cuando le avisaron al rey que Natán había llegado, éste se presentó ante el rey, se inclinó hasta tocar el suelo con la frente 24 y le preguntó:
«Majestad, ¿mandó usted que Adonías reine después de su muerte? 25 Porque él está celebrando una fiesta, y ha matado toros, terneros y muchas ovejas. Ha invitado a los hijos del rey, al general Joab y al sacerdote Abiatar, y mientras comen y beben, gritan: “¡Viva el rey Adonías!” 26 Lo raro es que no me invitó a mí ni al sacerdote Sadoc, ni a Benaías ni a nuestro hijo Salomón. 27 Majestad, ¿ha nombrado usted rey a Adonías sin avisarnos nada de esto?»
David nombra rey a Salomón
28 El rey David pidió que llamaran a Betsabé. Ella entró y se quedó de pie ante el rey. 29 Entonces David le dijo:
—Juro por Dios, que me ha librado de todos los problemas, 30 que lo que te juré por el Dios de Israel, lo voy a cumplir hoy mismo: Tu hijo Salomón reinará después de mí.
31 Entonces Betsabé se inclinó delante del rey hasta tocar el suelo con la frente, y dijo:
—¡Que viva para siempre mi señor, el rey David!
32 Después el rey David ordenó que llamaran al sacerdote Sadoc, al profeta Natán y a Benaías y, cuando éstos llegaron, 33 el rey les dijo:
—Quiero que mi hijo Salomón se suba a mi mula, y que lo lleven a Guihón. Vayan con mis asistentes. 34 El sacerdote Sadoc y el profeta Natán deben derramar aceite sobre la cabeza de Salomón para nombrarlo rey de Israel. Después, tocarán la trompeta y gritarán: “¡Viva el rey Salomón!” 35 Luego acompañarán a Salomón hasta mi trono, porque él va a reinar en mi lugar. He elegido a Salomón para que gobierne sobre Israel y Judá.
36 Benaías respondió:
—¡Así se hará! Y espero que el Dios de mi rey así lo apruebe. 37 Que Dios ayude a Salomón así como ha ayudado a mi rey, y haga que su reino sea aún mayor que el de Su Majestad.
38 Entonces el sacerdote Sadoc, el profeta Natán, Benaías y la guardia personal del rey, fueron y subieron a Salomón en la mula del rey David y lo llevaron a Guihón. 39 Allí, el sacerdote Sadoc tomó el aceite que estaba en el santuario, y derramó aceite sobre la cabeza de Salomón para nombrarlo rey. Luego sonaron las trompetas y toda la gente gritó: «¡Viva el rey Salomón!»
40 Después de esto, todos marcharon detrás de Salomón, tocando flautas. Estaban tan contentos que parecía que la tierra iba a partirse por el ruido que hacían.
41 Adonías y todos sus invitados ya habían acabado de comer cuando escucharon el ruido. Joab escuchó el sonido de la trompeta, y dijo: «¿Por qué habrá tanto alboroto en la ciudad?»
42 Mientras él hablaba, llegó Jonatán, el hijo del sacerdote Abiatar. Adonías le dijo:
—Entra, pues tú eres un hombre respetable y seguramente traes buenas noticias.
43 Jonatán le contestó:
—No, no traigo buenas noticias, porque el rey David ha nombrado rey a Salomón. 44 David le ordenó al sacerdote Sadoc, al profeta Natán, a Benaías y a sus asistentes que acompañaran a Salomón. Ellos subieron a Salomón sobre la mula del rey, 45 y el sacerdote Sadoc y el profeta Natán han derramado aceite sobre la cabeza de Salomón para nombrarlo rey. Esto sucedió en Guihón, de donde han regresado muy contentos. Así que toda la ciudad está muy alborotada, y por eso se escucha tanto ruido. 46 Salomón ya ocupa el trono del rey, 47 y todos los funcionarios del reino han ido a felicitarlo. Todos le decían: “¡Que Dios haga el reino de Salomón más grande que el de David!”
»El rey David se arrodilló junto a su cama y adoró a Dios, 48 diciendo: “¡Bendito sea el Dios de Israel, que me permitió ver a uno de mis hijos sentado en mi trono!”
49 Entonces todos los invitados de Adonías se asustaron, y cada uno se fue huyendo. 50 Adonías, por su parte, tuvo miedo de Salomón, y fue a refugiarse al santuario, y allí se agarró de los cuernos del altar.
51 Alguien le informó a Salomón:

1 Now king David was old and stricken in years; and they covered him with clothes, but he gat no heat.
2 Wherefore his servants said unto him, Let there be sought for my lord the king a young virgin: and let her stand before the king, and let her cherish him, and let her lie in thy bosom, that my lord the king may get heat.
3 So they sought for a fair damsel throughout all the coasts of Israel, and found Abishag a Shunammite, and brought her to the king.
4 And the damsel was very fair, and cherished the king, and ministered to him: but the king knew her not.
5 Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, I will be king: and he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.
6 And his father had not displeased him at any time in saying, Why hast thou done so? and he also was a very goodly man; and his mother bare him after Absalom.
7 And he conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah, and with Abiathar the priest: and they following Adonijah helped him.
8 But Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and Nathan the prophet, and Shimei, and Rei, and the mighty men which belonged to David, were not with Adonijah.
9 And Adonijah slew sheep and oxen and fat cattle by the stone of Zoheleth, which is by Enrogel, and called all his brethren the king's sons, and all the men of Judah the king's servants:
10 But Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah, and the mighty men, and Solomon his brother, he called not.
11 Wherefore Nathan spake unto Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying, Hast thou not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith doth reign, and David our lord knoweth it not?
12 Now therefore come, let me, I pray thee, give thee counsel, that thou mayest save thine own life, and the life of thy son Solomon.
13 Go and get thee in unto king David, and say unto him, Didst not thou, my lord, O king, swear unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? why then doth Adonijah reign?
14 Behold, while thou yet talkest there with the king, I also will come in after thee, and confirm thy words.
15 And Bathsheba went in unto the king into the chamber: and the king was very old; and Abishag the Shunammite ministered unto the king.
16 And Bathsheba bowed, and did obeisance unto the king. And the king said, What wouldest thou?
17 And she said unto him, My lord, thou swarest by the Lord thy God unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne.
18 And now, behold, Adonijah reigneth; and now, my lord the king, thou knowest it not:
19 And he hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the sons of the king, and Abiathar the priest, and Joab the captain of the host: but Solomon thy servant hath he not called.
20 And thou, my lord, O king, the eyes of all Israel are upon thee, that thou shouldest tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.
21 Otherwise it shall come to pass, when my lord the king shall sleep with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon shall be counted offenders.
22 And, lo, while she yet talked with the king, Nathan the prophet also came in.
23 And they told the king, saying, Behold Nathan the prophet. And when he was come in before the king, he bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.
24 And Nathan said, My lord, O king, hast thou said, Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne?
25 For he is gone down this day, and hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the king's sons, and the captains of the host, and Abiathar the priest; and, behold, they eat and drink before him, and say, God save king Adonijah.
26 But me, even me thy servant, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and thy servant Solomon, hath he not called.
27 Is this thing done by my lord the king, and thou hast not shewed it unto thy servant, who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?
28 Then king David answered and said, Call me Bathsheba. And she came into the king's presence, and stood before the king.
29 And the king sware, and said, As the Lord liveth, that hath redeemed my soul out of all distress,
30 Even as I sware unto thee by the Lord God of Israel, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne in my stead; even so will I certainly do this day.
31 Then Bathsheba bowed with her face to the earth, and did reverence to the king, and said, Let my lord king David live for ever.
32 And king David said, Call me Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada. And they came before the king.
33 The king also said unto them, Take with you the servants of your lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride upon mine own mule, and bring him down to Gihon:
34 And let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel: and blow ye with the trumpet, and say, God save king Solomon.
35 Then ye shall come up after him, that he may come and sit upon my throne; for he shall be king in my stead: and I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and over Judah.
36 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, and said, Amen: the Lord God of my lord the king say so too.
37 As the Lord hath been with my lord the king, even so be he with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord king David.
38 So Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, went down, and caused Solomon to ride upon king David's mule, and brought him to Gihon.
39 And Zadok the priest took an horn of oil out of the tabernacle, and anointed Solomon. And they blew the trumpet; and all the people said, God save king Solomon.
40 And all the people came up after him, and the people piped with pipes, and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth rent with the sound of them.
41 And Adonijah and all the guests that were with him heard it as they had made an end of eating. And when Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, Wherefore is this noise of the city being in an uproar?
42 And while he yet spake, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came; and Adonijah said unto him, Come in; for thou art a valiant man, and bringest good tidings.
43 And Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah, Verily our lord king David hath made Solomon king.
44 And the king hath sent with him Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, and they have caused him to ride upon the king's mule:
45 And Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon: and they are come up from thence rejoicing, so that the city rang again. This is the noise that ye have heard.
46 And also Solomon sitteth on the throne of the kingdom.
47 And moreover the king's servants came to bless our lord king David, saying, God make the name of Solomon better than thy name, and make his throne greater than thy throne. And the king bowed himself upon the bed.
48 And also thus said the king, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, which hath given one to sit on my throne this day, mine eyes even seeing it.
49 And all the guests that were with Adonijah were afraid, and rose up, and went every man his way.
50 And Adonijah feared because of Solomon, and arose, and went, and caught hold on the horns of the altar.
51 And it was told Solomon, saying, Behold, Adonijah feareth king Solomon: for, lo, he hath caught hold on the horns of the altar, saying, Let king Solomon swear unto me today that he will not slay his servant with the sword.
52 And Solomon said, If he will shew himself a worthy man, there shall not an hair of him fall to the earth: but if wickedness shall be found in him, he shall die.
53 So king Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. And he came and bowed himself to king Solomon: and Solomon said unto him, Go to thine house.

Adonijah Sets Himself Up as King
1 When King David was very old, he could not keep warm even when they put covers over him. 2 So his attendants said to him, “Let us look for a young virgin to serve the king and take care of him. She can lie beside him so that our lord the king may keep warm.”
3 Then they searched throughout Israel for a beautiful young woman and found Abishag,(A) a Shunammite,(B) and brought her to the king. 4 The woman was very beautiful; she took care of the king and waited on him, but the king had no sexual relations with her.
5 Now Adonijah,(C) whose mother was Haggith, put himself forward and said, “I will be king.” So he got chariots(D) and horses[a] ready, with fifty men to run ahead of him. 6 (His father had never rebuked(E) him by asking, “Why do you behave as you do?” He was also very handsome and was born next after Absalom.)
7 Adonijah conferred with Joab(F) son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar(G) the priest, and they gave him their support. 8 But Zadok(H) the priest, Benaiah(I) son of Jehoiada, Nathan(J) the prophet, Shimei(K) and Rei and David’s special guard(L) did not join Adonijah.
9 Adonijah then sacrificed sheep, cattle and fattened calves at the Stone of Zoheleth near En Rogel.(M) He invited all his brothers, the king’s sons,(N) and all the royal officials of Judah, 10 but he did not invite(O) Nathan the prophet or Benaiah or the special guard or his brother Solomon.(P)
11 Then Nathan asked Bathsheba,(Q) Solomon’s mother, “Have you not heard that Adonijah,(R) the son of Haggith, has become king, and our lord David knows nothing about it? 12 Now then, let me advise(S) you how you can save your own life and the life of your son Solomon. 13 Go in to King David and say to him, ‘My lord the king, did you not swear(T) to me your servant: “Surely Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he will sit on my throne”? Why then has Adonijah become king?’ 14 While you are still there talking to the king, I will come in and add my word to what you have said.”
15 So Bathsheba went to see the aged king in his room, where Abishag(U) the Shunammite was attending him. 16 Bathsheba bowed down, prostrating herself before the king.
“What is it you want?” the king asked.
17 She said to him, “My lord, you yourself swore(V) to me your servant by the Lord your God: ‘Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he will sit on my throne.’ 18 But now Adonijah has become king, and you, my lord the king, do not know about it. 19 He has sacrificed(W) great numbers of cattle, fattened calves, and sheep, and has invited all the king’s sons, Abiathar the priest and Joab the commander of the army, but he has not invited Solomon your servant. 20 My lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are on you, to learn from you who will sit on the throne of my lord the king after him. 21 Otherwise, as soon as my lord the king is laid to rest(X) with his ancestors, I and my son Solomon will be treated as criminals.”
22 While she was still speaking with the king, Nathan the prophet arrived. 23 And the king was told, “Nathan the prophet is here.” So he went before the king and bowed with his face to the ground.
24 Nathan said, “Have you, my lord the king, declared that Adonijah shall be king after you, and that he will sit on your throne? 25 Today he has gone down and sacrificed great numbers of cattle, fattened calves, and sheep. He has invited all the king’s sons, the commanders of the army and Abiathar the priest. Right now they are eating and drinking with him and saying, ‘Long live King Adonijah!’ 26 But me your servant, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and your servant Solomon he did not invite.(Y) 27 Is this something my lord the king has done without letting his servants know who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?”
David Makes Solomon King(Z)
28 Then King David said, “Call in Bathsheba.” So she came into the king’s presence and stood before him.
29 The king then took an oath: “As surely as the Lord lives, who has delivered me out of every trouble,(AA) 30 I will surely carry out this very day what I swore(AB) to you by the Lord, the God of Israel: Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he will sit on my throne in my place.”
31 Then Bathsheba bowed down with her face to the ground, prostrating herself before the king, and said, “May my lord King David live forever!”
32 King David said, “Call in Zadok(AC) the priest, Nathan the prophet and Benaiah son of Jehoiada.” When they came before the king, 33 he said to them: “Take your lord’s servants with you and have Solomon my son mount my own mule(AD) and take him down to Gihon.(AE) 34 There have Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint(AF) him king over Israel. Blow the trumpet(AG) and shout, ‘Long live King Solomon!’ 35 Then you are to go up with him, and he is to come and sit on my throne and reign in my place. I have appointed him ruler over Israel and Judah.”
36 Benaiah son of Jehoiada answered the king, “Amen! May the Lord, the God of my lord the king, so declare it. 37 As the Lord was with my lord the king, so may he be with(AH) Solomon to make his throne even greater(AI) than the throne of my lord King David!”
38 So Zadok(AJ) the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the Kerethites(AK) and the Pelethites went down and had Solomon mount King David’s mule, and they escorted him to Gihon.(AL) 39 Zadok the priest took the horn of oil(AM) from the sacred tent(AN) and anointed Solomon. Then they sounded the trumpet(AO) and all the people shouted,(AP) “Long live King Solomon!” 40 And all the people went up after him, playing pipes(AQ) and rejoicing greatly, so that the ground shook with the sound.
41 Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard it as they were finishing their feast. On hearing the sound of the trumpet, Joab asked, “What’s the meaning of all the noise in the city?”(AR)
42 Even as he was speaking, Jonathan(AS) son of Abiathar the priest arrived. Adonijah said, “Come in. A worthy man like you must be bringing good news.”(AT)
43 “Not at all!” Jonathan answered. “Our lord King David has made Solomon king. 44 The king has sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the Kerethites and the Pelethites, and they have put him on the king’s mule, 45 and Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king at Gihon. From there they have gone up cheering, and the city resounds(AU) with it. That’s the noise you hear. 46 Moreover, Solomon has taken his seat(AV) on the royal throne. 47 Also, the royal officials have come to congratulate our lord King David, saying, ‘May your God make Solomon’s name more famous than yours and his throne greater(AW) than yours!’ And the king bowed in worship on his bed 48 and said, ‘Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, who has allowed my eyes to see a successor(AX) on my throne today.’”
49 At this, all Adonijah’s guests rose in alarm and dispersed. 50 But Adonijah, in fear of Solomon, went and took hold of the horns(AY) of the altar. 51 Then Solomon was told, “Adonijah is afraid of King Solomon and is clinging to the horns of the altar. He says, ‘Let King Solomon swear to me today that he will not put his servant to death with the sword.’”
52 Solomon replied, “If he shows himself to be worthy, not a hair(AZ) of his head will fall to the ground; but if evil is found in him, he will die.” 53 Then King Solomon sent men, and they brought him down from the altar. And Adonijah came and bowed down to King Solomon, and Solomon said, “Go to your home.”
