38 Entonces el sacerdote Sadoc, el profeta Natán, Benaía, hijo de Joiada(A), los cereteos y los peleteos(B), descendieron e hicieron que Salomón montara en la mula del rey David, y lo llevaron a Gihón(C). 39 El sacerdote Sadoc tomó el cuerno de aceite de la tienda(D) y ungió a Salomón(E). Entonces tocaron trompeta, y todo el pueblo gritó[a]: «¡Viva el rey(F) Salomón(G)!». 40 Luego todo el pueblo subió tras él. El pueblo tocaba flautas y se regocijaba con gran alegría, de modo que la tierra se estremecía[b] con su sonido.
41 Y lo oyó Adonías y todos los invitados que estaban con él cuando habían terminado de comer. Al oír Joab el sonido de la trompeta, dijo: «¿Por qué hace la ciudad tal alboroto?». 42 Estaba aún hablando, cuando llegó Jonatán, hijo del sacerdote Abiatar(H). Y Adonías le dijo: «Entra, pues tú eres hombre valiente y traerás buenas noticias(I)». 43 Pero Jonatán respondió a Adonías: «Al contrario. Nuestro señor el rey David ha hecho rey a Salomón. 44 El rey también ha enviado con él al sacerdote Sadoc, al profeta Natán, a Benaía, hijo de Joiada, a los cereteos y a los peleteos, y ellos lo han montado en la mula del rey. 45 Y el sacerdote Sadoc y el profeta Natán lo han ungido rey en Gihón, y de allí han subido gozosos y se ha alborotado la ciudad(J). Este es el ruido que han oído. 46 Además, Salomón ya se ha sentado en el trono del reino(K), 47 y aun los siervos del rey han ido a bendecir a nuestro señor el rey David, diciéndole: “Que su Dios haga el nombre de Salomón más célebre[c] que su nombre y su trono más grande que el trono de usted(L)”. Y el rey ha adorado en el lecho(M). 48 El rey también ha dicho así: “Bendito sea el Señor, Dios de Israel, que ha concedido que se siente hoy en mi trono(N) un descendiente mío[d] mientras mis ojos lo ven”».
49 Entonces todos los invitados de Adonías se aterrorizaron, y se levantaron y cada uno se fue por su camino. 50 Adonías tuvo miedo de Salomón, y se levantó, se fue y se agarró de los cuernos del altar(O).

38 El sacerdote Sadoc, el profeta Natán y Benaías, hijo de Joyadá, y los quereteos y los peleteos, montaron a Salomón en la mula del rey David y lo escoltaron mientras bajaban hasta Guijón. 39 Allí el sacerdote Sadoc tomó el cuerno de aceite que estaba en la Tienda y ungió a Salomón. Tocaron entonces la trompeta y todo el pueblo gritó: «¡Viva el rey Salomón!». 40 Luego, todos subieron detrás de él, tocando flautas y lanzando gritos de alegría. Era tal el estruendo que la tierra temblaba.
41 Adonías y todos sus invitados estaban por terminar de comer cuando sintieron el estruendo. Al oír el sonido de la trompeta, Joab preguntó:
—¿Por qué habrá tanta bulla en la ciudad?
42 Aún estaba hablando cuando llegó Jonatán, hijo del sacerdote Abiatar.
—¡Entra! —dijo Adonías—. Un hombre respetable como tú debe traer buenas noticias.
43 —¡No es así! —exclamó Jonatán—. Nuestro señor el rey David ha nombrado rey a Salomón. 44 También ha ordenado que el sacerdote Sadoc, el profeta Natán y Benaías, hijo de Joyadá, con los quereteos y los peleteos, monten a Salomón en la mula del rey. 45 Sadoc y Natán lo han ungido como rey en Guijón. Desde allí han subido lanzando gritos de alegría y la ciudad está alborotada. A eso se debe el griterío que se escucha. 46 Además, Salomón se ha sentado en el trono real 47 y los funcionarios de la corte han ido a felicitar a nuestro señor, el rey David. Hasta le desearon que su Dios hiciera el nombre de Salomón más famoso todavía que el de David y que engrandeciera el trono de Salomón más que el suyo. Ante eso, el rey se postró en su cama 48 y dijo: “¡Alabado sea el Señor, Dios de Israel, que hoy me ha concedido ver a mi sucesor sentarse en mi trono!”.
49 Al oír eso, todos los invitados de Adonías se levantaron llenos de miedo y se dispersaron. 50 Adonías, por temor a Salomón, se refugió en el santuario, en donde se agarró de los cuernos del altar.

38 So Zadok(A) the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the Kerethites(B) and the Pelethites went down and had Solomon mount King David’s mule, and they escorted him to Gihon.(C) 39 Zadok the priest took the horn of oil(D) from the sacred tent(E) and anointed Solomon. Then they sounded the trumpet(F) and all the people shouted,(G) “Long live King Solomon!” 40 And all the people went up after him, playing pipes(H) and rejoicing greatly, so that the ground shook with the sound.
41 Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard it as they were finishing their feast. On hearing the sound of the trumpet, Joab asked, “What’s the meaning of all the noise in the city?”(I)
42 Even as he was speaking, Jonathan(J) son of Abiathar the priest arrived. Adonijah said, “Come in. A worthy man like you must be bringing good news.”(K)
43 “Not at all!” Jonathan answered. “Our lord King David has made Solomon king. 44 The king has sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the Kerethites and the Pelethites, and they have put him on the king’s mule, 45 and Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king at Gihon. From there they have gone up cheering, and the city resounds(L) with it. That’s the noise you hear. 46 Moreover, Solomon has taken his seat(M) on the royal throne. 47 Also, the royal officials have come to congratulate our lord King David, saying, ‘May your God make Solomon’s name more famous than yours and his throne greater(N) than yours!’ And the king bowed in worship on his bed 48 and said, ‘Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, who has allowed my eyes to see a successor(O) on my throne today.’”
49 At this, all Adonijah’s guests rose in alarm and dispersed. 50 But Adonijah, in fear of Solomon, went and took hold of the horns(P) of the altar.

38 So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the Cherethites, and the Pelethites [the king’s bodyguards] went down [from Jerusalem] and had Solomon ride on King David’s mule, and brought him to [the spring at] Gihon. 39 Zadok the priest took a horn of [olive] oil from the [sacred] tent and anointed Solomon. They blew the trumpet, and all the people said, “Long live King Solomon!” 40 All the people went up after him, and they were playing on flutes and rejoicing with great joy, so that the earth shook and seemed to burst open with their [joyful] sound.
41 Now Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard it as they finished eating. When Joab heard the trumpet sound, he said, “[a]Why is the city in such an uproar?” 42 While he was still speaking, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest arrived. And Adonijah said, “Come in, for you are a valiant and trustworthy man and you bring good news.”(A) 43 But Jonathan replied to Adonijah, “No, on the contrary, our lord King David has made Solomon king! 44 The king has sent him with Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the Cherethites, and the Pelethites; and they have had him ride on the king’s [own royal] mule. 45 Also, Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon, and they have come up from there celebrating, so the city is in an uproar. This is the noise which you have heard. 46 Besides, Solomon has taken his seat on the throne of the kingdom. 47 Moreover, the king’s servants came to bless (congratulate) our lord King David, saying, ‘May [b]your God make the name of Solomon better (more famous) than your name and make his throne greater than your throne.’ And the king bowed himself [before God] upon the bed. 48 The king has also said this: ‘Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who has granted one [of my descendants] to sit on my throne today and allowed my eyes to see it.’”
49 Then all Adonijah’s guests were terrified [of being branded as traitors] and stood up and left the feast, and each one went on his way. 50 And Adonijah feared Solomon, and he got up and went [to the tabernacle on Mt. Zion] and took hold of the horns of the altar [seeking asylum].
