A arca da aliança é levada para o Templo(A)

8 Aí o rei Salomão convocou todos os chefes das tribos e dos grupos de famílias de Israel para irem encontrar-se com ele em Jerusalém a fim de levarem a arca da aliança de Deus, de Sião, a Cidade de Davi, para o Templo. 2 Todos os israelitas se reuniram durante a Festa das Barracas, no mês de etanim, que é o sétimo mês. 3 Quando todos os chefes chegaram, os sacerdotes pegaram a arca da aliança 4 e a levaram para o Templo. Os levitas e os sacerdotes levaram também a Tenda da Presença de Deus com todos os seus equipamentos para o Templo. 5 O rei Salomão e todo o povo de Israel se reuniram em frente da arca da aliança e ofereceram em sacrifício um grande número de ovelhas e touros, tantos que nem dava para contar. 6 Então os sacerdotes levaram a arca para dentro do Templo e a colocaram onde devia ficar, no Lugar Santíssimo, debaixo das asas dos querubins. 7 Pois as suas asas estendidas cobriam a arca e os seus cabos. 8 As pontas dos cabos podiam ser vistas por qualquer pessoa que ficasse diretamente em frente ao Lugar Santíssimo, mas não podiam ser vistas de nenhum outro lugar. (Os cabos ainda estão ali até hoje.) 9 Dentro da arca estavam somente as duas placas de pedra que Moisés havia colocado ali, quando, no monte Sinai, o Senhor Deus havia feito uma aliança com os israelitas depois que eles saíram do Egito.

10 Quando os sacerdotes estavam saindo do Lugar Santo, uma nuvem encheu o Templo do Senhor 11 com a glória do Senhor, e eles não puderam voltar para dentro a fim de realizar os seus atos de culto. 12 Aí Salomão disse:

— Tu, ó Senhor, puseste o sol no céu
embora tivesses resolvido viver entre as nuvens escuras.
13 Mas agora eu construí para ti uma casa,
um lugar onde viverás para sempre.

Salomão fala ao povo(B)

14 Aí Salomão virou-se, olhou para o povo, que estava todo de pé, e pediu a bênção de Deus para todos.

15 Depois disse:

— Bendito seja o Senhor, o Deus de Israel! Pois, pelo seu poder, ele cumpriu a promessa que tinha feito a Davi, o meu pai, quando lhe disse: 16 “Desde o dia em que tirei do Egito o meu povo de Israel, eu não escolhi nenhuma cidade de todas as tribos da terra de Israel para ali construir um templo a fim de ser adorado nele. Mas escolhi você, Davi, para governar o meu povo.”

17 E Salomão continuou:

— Davi, o meu pai, tinha planos de construir um templo para a adoração do Senhor, o Deus de Israel, 18 mas o Senhor lhe disse: “Você fez bem quando planejou construir um templo para mim, 19 mas você não o construirá. Será o seu filho quem construirá o meu Templo.” 20 E agora Deus cumpriu a sua promessa. Eu fiquei no lugar do meu pai como rei de Israel e construí o Templo para a adoração do Senhor, o Deus de Israel. 21 Também separei no Templo um lugar para colocar a arca da aliança, onde estão guardadas as placas de pedra da aliança que o Senhor Deus fez com os nossos antepassados quando os tirou do Egito.

Salomão ora a Deus(C)

22 Então, na presença de todo o povo reunido, Salomão foi e ficou em frente do altar. Levantou as mãos para o céu 23 e disse:

— Ó Senhor, Deus de Israel! Não há Deus igual a ti em cima no céu nem embaixo na terra. Tu cumpres a aliança que fizeste com o teu povo e lhes mostras o teu amor quando eles, com todo o coração, vivem uma vida de obediência a ti. 24 Pelo teu poder cumpriste a promessa que fizeste a Davi, o meu pai; no dia de hoje todas as palavras da tua promessa foram completamente cumpridas. 25 E agora, ó Senhor, Deus de Israel, eu te peço que cumpras a outra promessa que fizeste ao meu pai quando lhe disseste que sempre haveria um descendente dele governando como rei de Israel, contanto que eles te obedecessem com o mesmo cuidado com que ele obedeceu. 26 Portanto, ó Deus de Israel, faze com que se cumpra aquilo que prometeste a Davi, o meu pai, teu servo.

27 — Mas será que, de fato, ó Deus, tu podes morar no meio de nós, criaturas humanas, aqui na terra? Tu és tão grande, que não cabes nem mesmo no céu; como poderia este Templo que eu construí ser bastante grande para isso? 28 Ó Senhor, meu Deus, eu sou teu servo. Escuta a minha oração e atende os pedidos que te faço hoje. 29 Olha de dia e de noite para este Templo, o lugar que escolheste para nele seres adorado. Ouve-me quando eu orar com o rosto virado para este lugar. 30 Escuta as minhas orações e as orações do teu povo quando eles orarem com o rosto virado para cá. Sim, da tua casa no céu, ouve-nos e perdoa-nos.

31 — Quando alguém for acusado de prejudicar outra pessoa e for trazido até o teu altar neste Templo e jurar que é inocente, 32 ó Senhor, ouve do céu e julga os teus servos. Castiga o culpado como ele merecer e declara que não tem culpa aquele que for inocente, recompensando-o como ele merecer.

33 — Quando, por ter pecado contra ti, o teu povo de Israel for derrotado pelos seus inimigos e, quando ele se virar para ti e vier a este Templo para te louvar e pedir o teu perdão, 34 escuta-o do céu. Perdoa o pecado do teu povo e leva-o de volta para a terra que deste aos seus antepassados.

35 — Quando o céu se fechar, e não chover, porque o teu povo pecou contra ti, e eles se arrependerem e virarem o rosto na direção deste Templo e orarem e te louvarem, depois que os tiveres castigado, 36 escuta-os do céu. Perdoa os pecados do rei e do povo de Israel e ensina-os a fazer o que é direito. Então, ó Deus, faze cair chuva sobre esta tua terra que deste ao teu povo para ser deles para sempre.

37 — Quando nesta terra houver falta de alimentos, ou houver pragas, ou as colheitas forem destruídas por ventos muito quentes ou por bandos de gafanhotos, ou quando o teu povo for atacado pelos seus inimigos, ou quando houver peste ou doença entre o povo, 38 escuta as suas orações. Se alguém do teu povo de Israel, sentindo no seu coração o peso da desgraça, estender as mãos na direção deste Templo e orar, 39 escuta a sua oração. Lá do teu lar no céu, ouve o teu povo, perdoa-o e ajuda-o. Só tu conheces os pensamentos secretos do coração humano. Trata cada pessoa como merecer, 40 para que o teu povo te tema e te obedeça durante todo o tempo em que eles viverem na terra que deste aos nossos antepassados.

41-42 — Quando um estrangeiro que vive numa terra bem longe daqui ouvir falar da tua fama e das grandes coisas que tens feito pelo teu povo e vier te adorar e orar a ti com o rosto virado para este Templo, 43 ouve a sua oração. Lá do céu, onde vives, escuta-o e faze tudo o que ele te pedir, para que todos os povos da terra possam te conhecer e temer, como faz o teu povo de Israel. Então eles ficarão sabendo que este Templo que eu construí é o lugar onde deves ser adorado.

44 — Quando ordenares que o teu povo saia para a guerra contra os seus inimigos, e o teu povo orar a ti, virados para esta cidade que escolheste e para este Templo que construí em honra do teu nome, 45 escuta do céu as suas orações e os seus pedidos. Ouve-os e dá-lhes a vitória.

46 — Quando eles pecarem contra ti — e não há ninguém que não peque — e na tua ira deixares que os inimigos deles os derrotem e os levem prisioneiros para alguma terra inimiga, longe ou perto daqui, 47 ouve as orações do teu povo. Se ali, naquela terra, eles se arrependerem e orarem a ti, confessando que foram pecadores e maus, escuta as suas orações, ó Senhor. 48 Se naquela terra eles verdadeiramente e sinceramente se arrependerem e orarem a ti, virados na direção desta terra que deste aos nossos antepassados, desta cidade que escolheste e deste Templo que construí em honra do teu nome, 49 escuta as orações deles. Do teu lar no céu ouve-os e dá-lhes a vitória. 50 Perdoa os pecados que o teu povo tem cometido contra ti e a sua revolta contra ti e faze com que os seus inimigos os tratem com bondade. 51 Eles são o teu povo que tiraste daquela fornalha acesa, o Egito.

52 — Ó Senhor, nosso Deus, eu te peço que olhes com simpatia para o teu povo de Israel e para o seu rei e escutes as suas orações sempre que eles te chamarem pedindo ajuda. 53 Tu os escolheste entre todos os povos para serem o teu povo, conforme lhes disseste por meio do teu servo Moisés, quando tiraste do Egito os nossos antepassados.

Salomão abençoa o povo

54 Depois que Salomão acabou de orar ao Senhor Deus, ele se levantou e ficou em frente do altar, onde havia estado ajoelhado com as mãos levantadas para o céu. 55 Então, em voz alta, pediu as bênçãos de Deus para todo o povo que estava reunido ali. Ele disse:

56 — Bendito seja o Senhor Deus, que deu paz ao seu povo, como havia prometido! Ele tem cumprido todas as abençoadas promessas que fez por meio do seu servo Moisés. 57 Que o Senhor, nosso Deus, esteja conosco assim como esteve com os nossos antepassados! Que ele nunca nos deixe, nem nos abandone! 58 Que Deus nos faça obedientes a ele, para que sempre vivamos conforme ele quer, obedecendo a todos os mandamentos, leis e ensinos que ele deu aos nossos antepassados! 59 Que o Senhor, nosso Deus, lembre sempre desta oração e dos pedidos que eu lhe fiz! Que ele sempre tenha misericórdia do povo de Israel e do seu rei, de acordo com o que precisarem! 60 E assim todas as nações do mundo ficarão sabendo que somente o Senhor é Deus e que não há nenhum outro. 61 Que vocês sejam sempre fiéis ao Senhor, nosso Deus, obedecendo a todos os seus mandamentos e leis, como fazem hoje!

A inauguração do Templo(D)

62 Então o rei Salomão e todo o povo que estava ali ofereceram sacrifícios a Deus, o Senhor. 63 Ele ofereceu em sacrifício vinte e dois mil bois e cento e vinte mil ovelhas como ofertas de paz. E assim o rei e todo o povo dedicaram o Templo ao serviço do Senhor. 64 Naquele mesmo dia Salomão separou, a fim de ser sagrada para Deus, a parte central do pátio que ficava em frente ao Templo. Ali ele apresentou as ofertas que foram completamente queimadas, as ofertas de cereais e a gordura dos animais que haviam sido trazidos como ofertas de paz. Salomão fez isso porque o altar de bronze era muito pequeno para todas essas ofertas.

65 Naquela ocasião, ali no Templo, Salomão e todo o povo de Israel comemoraram durante sete dias a Festa das Barracas. O povo era uma enorme multidão de pessoas que tinham vindo do país inteiro, desde a subida de Hamate, no Norte, até a fronteira do Egito, no Sul. 66 No oitavo dia Salomão mandou o povo para casa. Todos pediram as bênçãos de Deus para ele e foram embora, felizes por causa de todas as coisas boas que o Senhor Deus tinha dado ao seu servo Davi e ao seu povo de Israel.

The Ark Brought into the Temple

8 (A)Then Solomon assembled the elders of Israel and all (B)the heads of the tribes, the leaders of the fathers’ households of the sons of Israel, to King Solomon in Jerusalem, (C)to bring up the ark of the covenant of the Lord from (D)the city of David, which is Zion. 2 All the men of Israel assembled themselves to King Solomon at (E)the feast, in the month Ethanim, which is the seventh month. 3 Then all the elders of Israel came, and (F)the priests took up the ark. 4 They brought up the ark of the Lord and (G)the tent of meeting and all the holy utensils, which were in the tent, and the priests and the Levites brought them up. 5 And King Solomon and all the congregation of Israel, who were assembled to him, (H)were with him before the ark, sacrificing [a]so many sheep and oxen they could not be counted or numbered. 6 Then (I)the priests brought the ark of the covenant of the Lord (J)to its place, into the inner sanctuary of the house, to the most holy place, (K)under the wings of the cherubim. 7 For the cherubim spread their wings over the place of the ark, and the cherubim made a covering over the ark and its poles from above. 8 But (L)the poles were so long that the ends of the poles could be seen from the holy place before the inner sanctuary, but they could not be seen outside; they are there to this day. 9 (M)There was nothing in the ark except the two tablets of stone which Moses put there at Horeb, where (N)the Lord made a covenant with the sons of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt. 10 It happened that when the priests came from the holy place, (O)the cloud filled the house of the Lord, 11 so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled the house of the Lord.

Solomon Addresses the People

12 (P)Then Solomon said,

“The Lord has said that (Q)He would dwell in the thick cloud.
13 “(R)I have surely built You a lofty house,
(S)A place for Your dwelling forever.”

14 Then the king [b]faced about and (T)blessed all the assembly of Israel, while all the assembly of Israel was standing. 15 He said, “(U)Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, (V)who spoke with His mouth to my father David and has fulfilled it with His hand, saying, 16 ‘(W)Since the day that I brought My people Israel from Egypt, I did not choose a city out of all the tribes of Israel in which to build a house that (X)My name might be there, but (Y)I chose David to be over My people Israel.’ 17 (Z)Now it was [c]in the heart of my father David to build a house for the name of the Lord, the God of Israel. 18 But the Lord said to my father David, ‘Because it was [d]in your heart to build a house for My name, you did well that it was [e]in your heart. 19 (AA)Nevertheless you shall not build the house, but your son who [f]will be born to you, he will build the house for My name.’ 20 Now the Lord has fulfilled His word which He spoke; for (AB)I have risen in place of my father David and sit on the throne of Israel, as the Lord [g]promised, and have built the house for the name of the Lord, the God of Israel. 21 There I have set a place for the ark, (AC)in which is the covenant of the Lord, which He made with our fathers when He brought them from the land of Egypt.”

The Prayer of Dedication

22 Then (AD)Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in the presence of all the assembly of Israel and (AE)spread out his hands toward heaven. 23 He said, “O Lord, the God of Israel, (AF)there is no God like You in heaven above or on earth beneath, (AG)keeping covenant and showing lovingkindness to Your servants who walk before You with all their heart, 24 who have kept with Your servant, my father David, that which You have [h]promised him; indeed, You have spoken with Your mouth and have fulfilled it with Your hand as it is this day. 25 Now therefore, O Lord, the God of Israel, keep with Your servant David my father that which You have [i]promised him, saying, ‘[j](AH)You shall not lack a man to sit on the throne of Israel, if only your sons take heed to their way to walk before Me as you have walked.’ 26 Now therefore, O God of Israel, let Your word, I pray, be confirmed (AI)which You have spoken to Your servant, my father David.

27 “But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, (AJ)heaven and the [k]highest heaven cannot contain You, how much less this house which I have built! 28 Yet have regard to the (AK)prayer of Your servant and to his supplication, O Lord my God, to listen to the cry and to the prayer which Your servant prays before You today; 29 (AL)that Your eyes may be open toward this house night and day, toward (AM)the place of which You have said, ‘My name shall be there,’ to listen to the prayer which Your servant shall pray toward this place. 30 (AN)Listen to the supplication of Your servant and of Your people Israel, (AO)when they pray toward this place; hear in heaven Your dwelling place; hear and (AP)forgive.

31 “(AQ)If a man sins against his neighbor and is made to take an oath, and he comes and takes an oath before Your altar in this house, 32 then hear in heaven and act and judge Your servants, (AR)condemning the wicked by bringing his way on his own head and justifying the righteous by giving him according to his righteousness.

33 “(AS)When Your people Israel are [l]defeated before an enemy, because they have sinned against You, (AT)if they turn to You again and confess Your name and pray and make supplication to You in this house, 34 then hear in heaven, and forgive the sin of Your people Israel, and bring them back to the land which You gave to their fathers.

35 “(AU)When the heavens are shut up and there is no rain, because they have sinned against You, and they pray toward this place and confess Your name and turn from their sin when You afflict them, 36 then hear in heaven and forgive the sin of Your servants and of Your people Israel, (AV)indeed, teach them the good way in which they should walk. And (AW)send rain on Your land, which You have given Your people for an inheritance.

37 “(AX)If there is famine in the land, if there is pestilence, if there is blight or mildew, locust or grasshopper, if their enemy besieges them in the land of their [m]cities, whatever plague, whatever sickness there is, 38 whatever prayer or supplication is made by any man or by all Your people Israel, [n]each knowing the [o]affliction of his own heart, and spreading his [p]hands toward this house; 39 then hear in heaven Your dwelling place, and forgive and act and render to each according to all his ways, (AY)whose heart You know, for (AZ)You alone know the hearts of all the sons of men, 40 that they may [q]fear You all the days that they live [r]in the land which You have given to our fathers.

41 “Also concerning the foreigner who is not of Your people Israel, when he comes from a far country for Your name’s sake 42 (for they will hear of Your great name (BA)and Your mighty hand, and of Your outstretched arm); when he comes and prays toward this house, 43 hear in heaven Your dwelling place, and do according to all for which the foreigner calls to You, in order (BB)that all the peoples of the earth may know Your name, to [s]fear You, as do Your people Israel, and that they may know that [t]this house which I have built is called by Your name.

44 “When Your people go out to battle against [u]their enemy, by whatever way You shall send them, and (BC)they pray to the Lord [v]toward the city which You have chosen and the house which I have built for Your name, 45 then hear in heaven their prayer and their supplication, and maintain their [w]cause.

46 “When they sin against You (for (BD)there is no man who does not sin) and You are angry with them and deliver them to an enemy, so that [x]they take them away captive (BE)to the land of the enemy, far off or near; 47 (BF)if they [y]take thought in the land where they have been taken captive, and repent and make supplication to You in the land of those who have taken them captive, saying, ‘(BG)We have sinned and have committed iniquity, we have acted wickedly’; 48 (BH)if they return to You with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of their enemies who have taken them captive, and (BI)pray to You toward their land which You have given to their fathers, the city which You have chosen, and the house which I have built for Your name; 49 then hear their prayer and their supplication in heaven Your dwelling place, and maintain their [z]cause, 50 and forgive Your people who have sinned against You and all their transgressions which they have transgressed against You, and (BJ)make them objects of compassion before those who have taken them captive, that they may have compassion on them 51 ((BK)for they are Your people and Your inheritance which You have brought forth from Egypt, (BL)from the midst of the iron furnace), 52 (BM)that Your eyes may be open to the supplication of Your servant and to the supplication of Your people Israel, to listen to them whenever they call to You. 53 For You have separated them from all the peoples of the earth as Your inheritance, (BN)as You spoke through Moses Your servant, when You brought our fathers forth from Egypt, O Lord [aa]God.”

Solomon’s Benediction

54 (BO)When Solomon had finished praying this entire prayer and supplication to the Lord, (BP)he arose from before the altar of the Lord, from kneeling on his knees with his [ab]hands spread toward heaven. 55 And he stood and (BQ)blessed all the assembly of Israel with a loud voice, saying:

56 “Blessed be the Lord, who has given rest to His people Israel, (BR)according to all that He [ac]promised; (BS)not one word has [ad]failed of all His good [ae]promise, which He [af]promised through Moses His servant. 57 May the Lord our God be with us, as He was with our fathers; (BT)may He not leave us or forsake us, 58 that (BU)He may incline our hearts to Himself, to walk in all His ways and to keep His commandments and His statutes and His ordinances, which He commanded our fathers. 59 And may these words of mine, with which I have made supplication before the Lord, be near to the Lord our God day and night, that He may maintain the [ag]cause of His servant and the [ah]cause of His people Israel, [ai]as each day requires, 60 so (BV)that all the peoples of the earth may know that (BW)the Lord is God; there is no one else. 61 (BX)Let your heart therefore be [aj]wholly devoted to the Lord our God, to walk in His statutes and to keep His commandments, as at this day.”

Dedicatory Sacrifices

62 (BY)Now the king and all Israel with him (BZ)offered sacrifice before the Lord. 63 Solomon offered for the sacrifice of peace offerings, which he offered to the Lord, 22,000 oxen and 120,000 sheep. (CA)So the king and all the sons of Israel dedicated the house of the Lord. 64 On the same day the king consecrated the middle of the court that was before the house of the Lord, because there he [ak]offered the burnt offering and the grain offering and the fat of the peace offerings; for (CB)the bronze altar that was before the Lord was too small to hold the burnt offering and the grain offering and the fat of the peace offerings.

65 So (CC)Solomon observed the feast at that time, and all Israel with him, a great assembly (CD)from the entrance of Hamath (CE)to the brook of Egypt, before the Lord our God, for seven days and seven more days, even fourteen days. 66 On the eighth day he sent the people away and they blessed the king. Then they went to their tents joyful and glad of heart for all the goodness that the Lord had [al]shown to David His servant and to Israel His people.

The Ark Brought to the Temple(A)

8 Then King Solomon summoned into his presence at Jerusalem the elders of Israel, all the heads of the tribes and the chiefs(B) of the Israelite families, to bring up the ark(C) of the Lord’s covenant from Zion, the City of David.(D) 2 All the Israelites came together to King Solomon at the time of the festival(E) in the month of Ethanim, the seventh month.(F)

3 When all the elders of Israel had arrived, the priests(G) took up the ark, 4 and they brought up the ark of the Lord and the tent of meeting(H) and all the sacred furnishings in it. The priests and Levites(I) carried them up, 5 and King Solomon and the entire assembly of Israel that had gathered about him were before the ark, sacrificing(J) so many sheep and cattle that they could not be recorded or counted.

6 The priests then brought the ark of the Lord’s covenant(K) to its place in the inner sanctuary of the temple, the Most Holy Place,(L) and put it beneath the wings of the cherubim.(M) 7 The cherubim spread their wings over the place of the ark and overshadowed(N) the ark and its carrying poles. 8 These poles were so long that their ends could be seen from the Holy Place in front of the inner sanctuary, but not from outside the Holy Place; and they are still there today.(O) 9 There was nothing in the ark except the two stone tablets(P) that Moses had placed in it at Horeb, where the Lord made a covenant with the Israelites after they came out of Egypt.

10 When the priests withdrew from the Holy Place, the cloud(Q) filled the temple of the Lord. 11 And the priests could not perform their service(R) because of the cloud, for the glory(S) of the Lord filled his temple.

12 Then Solomon said, “The Lord has said that he would dwell in a dark cloud;(T) 13 I have indeed built a magnificent temple for you, a place for you to dwell(U) forever.”

14 While the whole assembly of Israel was standing there, the king turned around and blessed(V) them. 15 Then he said:

“Praise be to the Lord,(W) the God of Israel, who with his own hand has fulfilled what he promised with his own mouth to my father David. For he said, 16 ‘Since the day I brought my people Israel out of Egypt,(X) I have not chosen a city in any tribe of Israel to have a temple built so that my Name(Y) might be there, but I have chosen(Z) David(AA) to rule my people Israel.’

17 “My father David had it in his heart(AB) to build a temple(AC) for the Name of the Lord, the God of Israel. 18 But the Lord said to my father David, ‘You did well to have it in your heart to build a temple for my Name. 19 Nevertheless, you(AD) are not the one to build the temple, but your son, your own flesh and blood—he is the one who will build the temple for my Name.’(AE)

20 “The Lord has kept the promise he made: I have succeeded(AF) David my father and now I sit on the throne of Israel, just as the Lord promised, and I have built(AG) the temple for the Name of the Lord, the God of Israel. 21 I have provided a place there for the ark, in which is the covenant of the Lord that he made with our ancestors when he brought them out of Egypt.”

Solomon’s Prayer of Dedication(AH)

22 Then Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in front of the whole assembly of Israel, spread out his hands(AI) toward heaven 23 and said:

“Lord, the God of Israel, there is no God like(AJ) you in heaven above or on earth below—you who keep your covenant of love(AK) with your servants who continue wholeheartedly in your way. 24 You have kept your promise to your servant David my father; with your mouth you have promised and with your hand you have fulfilled it—as it is today.

25 “Now Lord, the God of Israel, keep for your servant David my father the promises(AL) you made to him when you said, ‘You shall never fail to have a successor to sit before me on the throne of Israel, if only your descendants are careful in all they do to walk before me faithfully as you have done.’ 26 And now, God of Israel, let your word that you promised(AM) your servant David my father come true.

27 “But will God really dwell(AN) on earth? The heavens, even the highest heaven,(AO) cannot contain(AP) you. How much less this temple I have built! 28 Yet give attention to your servant’s prayer and his plea for mercy, Lord my God. Hear the cry and the prayer that your servant is praying in your presence this day. 29 May your eyes be open(AQ) toward(AR) this temple night and day, this place of which you said, ‘My Name(AS) shall be there,’ so that you will hear the prayer your servant prays toward this place. 30 Hear the supplication of your servant and of your people Israel when they pray(AT) toward this place. Hear(AU) from heaven, your dwelling place, and when you hear, forgive.(AV)

31 “When anyone wrongs their neighbor and is required to take an oath and they come and swear the oath(AW) before your altar in this temple, 32 then hear from heaven and act. Judge between your servants, condemning the guilty by bringing down on their heads what they have done, and vindicating the innocent by treating them in accordance with their innocence.(AX)

33 “When your people Israel have been defeated(AY) by an enemy because they have sinned(AZ) against you, and when they turn back to you and give praise to your name, praying and making supplication to you in this temple,(BA) 34 then hear from heaven and forgive the sin of your people Israel and bring them back to the land you gave to their ancestors.

35 “When the heavens are shut up and there is no rain(BB) because your people have sinned(BC) against you, and when they pray toward this place and give praise to your name and turn from their sin because you have afflicted them, 36 then hear from heaven and forgive the sin of your servants, your people Israel. Teach(BD) them the right way(BE) to live, and send rain(BF) on the land you gave your people for an inheritance.

37 “When famine(BG) or plague(BH) comes to the land, or blight(BI) or mildew, locusts or grasshoppers,(BJ) or when an enemy besieges them in any of their cities, whatever disaster or disease may come, 38 and when a prayer or plea is made by anyone among your people Israel—being aware of the afflictions of their own hearts, and spreading out their hands(BK) toward this temple— 39 then hear(BL) from heaven, your dwelling place. Forgive(BM) and act; deal with everyone according to all they do, since you know(BN) their hearts (for you alone know every human heart), 40 so that they will fear(BO) you all the time they live in the land(BP) you gave our ancestors.

41 “As for the foreigner(BQ) who does not belong to your people Israel but has come from a distant land because of your name— 42 for they will hear(BR) of your great name and your mighty hand(BS) and your outstretched arm—when they come and pray toward this temple, 43 then hear from heaven, your dwelling place. Do whatever the foreigner asks of you, so that all the peoples of the earth may know(BT) your name and fear(BU) you, as do your own people Israel, and may know that this house I have built bears your Name.(BV)

44 “When your people go to war against their enemies, wherever you send them, and when they pray(BW) to the Lord toward the city you have chosen and the temple I have built for your Name, 45 then hear from heaven their prayer and their plea, and uphold their cause.(BX)

46 “When they sin against you—for there is no one who does not sin(BY)—and you become angry with them and give them over to their enemies, who take them captive(BZ) to their own lands, far away or near; 47 and if they have a change of heart in the land where they are held captive, and repent and plead(CA) with you in the land of their captors and say, ‘We have sinned, we have done wrong, we have acted wickedly’;(CB) 48 and if they turn back(CC) to you with all their heart(CD) and soul in the land of their enemies who took them captive, and pray(CE) to you toward the land you gave their ancestors, toward the city you have chosen and the temple(CF) I have built for your Name;(CG) 49 then from heaven, your dwelling place, hear their prayer and their plea, and uphold their cause. 50 And forgive your people, who have sinned against you; forgive all the offenses they have committed against you, and cause their captors to show them mercy;(CH) 51 for they are your people and your inheritance,(CI) whom you brought out of Egypt, out of that iron-smelting furnace.(CJ)

52 “May your eyes be open(CK) to your servant’s plea and to the plea of your people Israel, and may you listen to them whenever they cry out to you.(CL) 53 For you singled them out from all the nations of the world to be your own inheritance,(CM) just as you declared through your servant Moses when you, Sovereign Lord, brought our ancestors out of Egypt.”

54 When Solomon had finished all these prayers and supplications to the Lord, he rose from before the altar of the Lord, where he had been kneeling with his hands spread out toward heaven. 55 He stood and blessed(CN) the whole assembly of Israel in a loud voice, saying:

56 “Praise be to the Lord, who has given rest(CO) to his people Israel just as he promised. Not one word has failed of all the good promises(CP) he gave through his servant Moses. 57 May the Lord our God be with us as he was with our ancestors; may he never leave us nor forsake(CQ) us. 58 May he turn our hearts(CR) to him, to walk in obedience to him and keep the commands, decrees and laws he gave our ancestors. 59 And may these words of mine, which I have prayed before the Lord, be near to the Lord our God day and night, that he may uphold the cause of his servant and the cause of his people Israel according to each day’s need, 60 so that all the peoples(CS) of the earth may know that the Lord is God and that there is no other.(CT) 61 And may your hearts(CU) be fully committed(CV) to the Lord our God, to live by his decrees and obey his commands, as at this time.”

The Dedication of the Temple(CW)

62 Then the king and all Israel with him offered sacrifices(CX) before the Lord. 63 Solomon offered a sacrifice of fellowship offerings to the Lord: twenty-two thousand cattle and a hundred and twenty thousand sheep and goats. So the king and all the Israelites dedicated(CY) the temple of the Lord.

64 On that same day the king consecrated the middle part of the courtyard in front of the temple of the Lord, and there he offered burnt offerings, grain offerings and the fat(CZ) of the fellowship offerings, because the bronze altar(DA) that stood before the Lord was too small to hold the burnt offerings, the grain offerings and the fat of the fellowship offerings.(DB)

65 So Solomon observed the festival(DC) at that time, and all Israel with him—a vast assembly, people from Lebo Hamath(DD) to the Wadi of Egypt.(DE) They celebrated it before the Lord our God for seven days and seven days more, fourteen days in all. 66 On the following day he sent the people away. They blessed the king and then went home, joyful and glad in heart for all the good(DF) things the Lord had done for his servant David and his people Israel.
