Um profeta condena Jeroboão
13 Por ordem do Senhor, um homem de Deus, vindo de Judá, foi até Betel e chegou ali quando Jeroboão se aproximava do altar para queimar incenso. 2 Então, por ordem do Senhor, ele gritou: “Altar, altar! Assim diz o Senhor: ‘Um menino chamado Josias nascerá na dinastia de Davi. Sobre você ele sacrificará os sacerdotes dos santuários idólatras que queimam incenso aqui, e sobre você serão queimados ossos humanos!’”. 3 Naquele mesmo dia, o homem de Deus deu um sinal. Disse ele: “O Senhor anunciou este sinal: O altar se rachará, e suas cinzas se derramarão pelo chão”.
4 Quando o rei Jeroboão ouviu o homem de Deus falar contra o altar em Betel, apontou para o homem e ordenou: “Prendam-no!”. No mesmo instante, porém, a mão do rei ficou paralisada nessa posição, e ele não conseguia fazê-la voltar à posição normal. 5 Ao mesmo tempo, uma grande rachadura apareceu no altar e as cinzas se derramaram, exatamente como o homem de Deus tinha dito na mensagem recebida do Senhor.
6 O rei disse ao homem de Deus: “Por favor, peça ao Senhor, seu Deus, que restaure a minha mão!”. O homem de Deus orou ao Senhor e a mão do rei foi restaurada, e ele pôde movimentá-la novamente.
7 Então o rei disse ao homem de Deus: “Venha ao palácio comigo e coma alguma coisa, e eu lhe darei um presente”.
8 Mas o homem de Deus respondeu a Jeroboão: “Mesmo que o rei me desse metade de tudo que possui, eu não o acompanharia. Não comeria nem beberia coisa alguma neste lugar, 9 pois o Senhor me ordenou: ‘Não coma nem beba coisa alguma enquanto estiver lá e não volte pelo mesmo caminho por onde foi’”. 10 Então ele partiu de Betel e voltou para casa por outro caminho.
11 Acontece que morava em Betel um profeta idoso. Seus filhos[a] foram até ele e lhe contaram o que o homem de Deus havia feito em Betel naquele dia. Também contaram ao pai o que o homem de Deus tinha dito ao rei. 12 O profeta idoso lhes perguntou: “Por onde ele foi?”. Eles mostraram ao pai[b] o caminho por onde o homem de Deus tinha ido. 13 “Selem o jumento”, disse o profeta idoso. Eles selaram o jumento para o pai, e ele montou.
14 Foi atrás do homem de Deus e o encontrou sentado debaixo de uma grande árvore. Perguntou-lhe: “Você é o homem de Deus que veio de Judá?”.
“Sim, sou eu”, respondeu ele.
15 Então o profeta disse ao homem de Deus: “Venha para casa comigo e coma alguma coisa”.
16 “Não posso ir com você”, respondeu ele. “Não tenho permissão para comer nem beber coisa alguma neste lugar, 17 pois o Senhor me ordenou: ‘Não coma nem beba coisa alguma enquanto estiver lá e não volte pelo mesmo caminho por onde foi’.”
18 O profeta idoso, porém, respondeu: “Também sou profeta como você. E um anjo me deu esta ordem da parte do Senhor: ‘Traga-o para casa com você, para que ele coma pão e beba água’”. No entanto, estava mentindo. 19 Eles voltaram juntos, e o homem de Deus comeu e bebeu na casa do profeta.
20 Então, enquanto estavam sentados à mesa, veio uma ordem do Senhor ao profeta idoso. 21 Ele falou ao homem de Deus que tinha vindo de Judá: “Assim diz o Senhor: ‘Você desafiou a palavra do Senhor e desobedeceu à ordem que o Senhor, seu Deus, lhe deu. 22 Voltou a este lugar e comeu e bebeu onde ele lhe disse que não comesse nem bebesse. Por isso seu corpo não será sepultado no túmulo de seus antepassados’”.
23 Quando o homem de Deus terminou de comer e beber, o profeta idoso selou seu próprio jumento para ele, 24 e o homem de Deus partiu. Enquanto estava a caminho, apareceu um leão e o matou. Seu corpo ficou na estrada, com o jumento e o leão parados ao lado dele. 25 Algumas pessoas que passaram viram o corpo estendido ali, com o leão parado ao lado dele, e deram a notícia em Betel, onde morava o profeta idoso.
26 Quando o profeta que o trouxe de volta soube do que havia acontecido, disse: “É o homem de Deus que desafiou a palavra do Senhor. O Senhor cumpriu sua palavra ao fazer que o leão o atacasse e matasse”.
27 Então o profeta disse a seus filhos: “Selem o jumento para mim”. Eles selaram o jumento, 28 e o profeta foi e encontrou o corpo estendido na estrada. O jumento e o leão ainda estavam parados ao lado dele; o leão não havia comido o corpo nem atacado o jumento. 29 O profeta colocou o corpo do homem de Deus sobre o jumento e o levou de volta à cidade para lamentar por ele e sepultá-lo. 30 Pôs o corpo em sua própria sepultura e lamentou por ele, exclamando: “Ah, meu irmão!”.
31 Depois de sepultá-lo, o profeta disse a seus filhos: “Quando eu morrer, enterrem-me no túmulo onde está sepultado o homem de Deus. Ponham meus ossos ao lado dos ossos dele, 32 pois a mensagem que o Senhor ordenou que ele proclamasse contra o altar em Betel e contra os santuários idólatras nas cidades de Samaria certamente se cumprirá”.
33 Mesmo depois disso, Jeroboão não se arrependeu de seus maus caminhos. Continuou a nomear sacerdotes dentre o povo comum; qualquer um que desejasse podia se tornar sacerdote dos santuários idólatras. 34 Com isso, por causa desse pecado, a dinastia de Jeroboão foi eliminada da face da terra.

O Homem de Deus que Veio de Judá
13 Por ordem do Senhor um homem de Deus foi de Judá a Betel, quando Jeroboão estava em pé junto ao altar para queimar incenso. 2 Ele clamou contra o altar, segundo a ordem do Senhor: “Ó altar, ó altar! Assim diz o Senhor: ‘Um filho nascerá na família de Davi e se chamará Josias. Sobre você ele sacrificará os sacerdotes dos altares idólatras que agora queimam incenso aqui, e ossos humanos serão queimados sobre você’”. 3 Naquele mesmo dia o homem de Deus deu um sinal: “Este é o sinal que o Senhor declarou: O altar se fenderá, e as cinzas que estão sobre ele se derramarão”.
4 Quando o rei Jeroboão ouviu o que o homem de Deus proclamava contra o altar de Betel, apontou para ele e ordenou: “Prendam-no!” Mas o braço que ele tinha estendido ficou paralisado, e não voltava ao normal. 5 Além disso, o altar se fendeu, e as suas cinzas se derramaram, conforme o sinal dado pelo homem de Deus por ordem do Senhor.
6 Então o rei disse ao homem de Deus: “Interceda junto ao Senhor, o seu Deus, e ore por mim para que meu braço se recupere”. O homem de Deus intercedeu junto ao Senhor, e o braço do rei recuperou-se e voltou ao normal.
7 O rei disse ao homem de Deus: “Venha à minha casa e coma algo, e eu o recompensarei”.
8 Mas o homem de Deus respondeu ao rei: “Mesmo que me desse a metade dos seus bens, eu não iria com você, nem comeria, nem beberia nada neste lugar. 9 Pois recebi estas ordens pela palavra do Senhor: ‘Não coma pão nem beba água nem volte pelo mesmo caminho por onde foi’”. 10 Por isso, quando ele voltou, não foi pelo caminho por onde tinha vindo a Betel.
11 Ora, havia um certo profeta, já idoso, que morava em Betel. Seus filhos lhe contaram tudo o que o homem de Deus havia feito naquele dia e também o que ele dissera ao rei. 12 O pai lhes perguntou: “Por qual caminho ele foi?” E os seus filhos lhe mostraram por onde tinha ido o homem de Deus que viera de Judá. 13 Então disse aos filhos: “Selem o jumento para mim”. E, depois de selarem o jumento, ele montou 14 e cavalgou à procura do homem de Deus, até que o encontrou sentado embaixo da Grande Árvore. E lhe perguntou: “Você é o homem de Deus que veio de Judá?”
“Sou”, respondeu.
15 Então o profeta lhe disse: “Venha à minha casa comer alguma coisa”.
16 O homem de Deus disse: “Não posso ir com você, nem posso comer pão ou beber água neste lugar. 17 A palavra do Senhor deu-me esta ordem: ‘Não coma pão nem beba água lá, nem volte pelo mesmo caminho por onde você foi’ ”.
18 O profeta idoso respondeu: “Eu também sou profeta como você. E um anjo me disse por ordem do Senhor: ‘Faça-o voltar com você para a sua casa para que coma pão e beba água’ ”. Mas ele estava mentindo. 19 E o homem de Deus voltou com ele e foi comer e beber em sua casa.
20 Enquanto ainda estavam sentados à mesa, a palavra do Senhor veio ao profeta idoso que o havia feito voltar 21 e ele bradou ao homem de Deus que tinha vindo de Judá: “Assim diz o Senhor: ‘Você desafiou a palavra do Senhor e não obedeceu à ordem que o Senhor, o seu Deus, lhe deu. 22 Você voltou e comeu pão e bebeu água no lugar onde ele lhe falou que não comesse nem bebesse. Por isso o seu corpo não será sepultado no túmulo dos seus antepassados’”.
23 Quando o homem de Deus acabou de comer e beber, o profeta idoso selou seu jumento para ele. 24 No caminho, um leão o atacou e o matou, e o seu corpo ficou estendido no chão, ao lado do leão e do jumento. 25 Algumas pessoas que passaram viram o cadáver estendido ali, com o leão ao lado, e foram dar a notícia na cidade onde o profeta idoso vivia. 26 Quando este soube disso, exclamou: “É o homem de Deus que desafiou a palavra do Senhor! O Senhor o entregou ao leão, que o feriu e o matou, conforme a palavra do Senhor o tinha advertido”.
27 O profeta disse aos seus filhos: “Selem o jumento para mim”, e eles o fizeram. 28 Ele foi e encontrou o cadáver caído no caminho, com o jumento e o leão ao seu lado. O leão não tinha comido o corpo nem ferido o jumento. 29 O profeta apanhou o corpo do homem de Deus, colocou-o sobre o jumento, e o levou de volta para Betel[a], a fim de chorar por ele e sepultá-lo. 30 Ele o pôs no seu próprio túmulo, e se lamentaram por ele, cada um exclamando: “Ah, meu irmão!”
31 Depois de sepultá-lo, disse aos seus filhos: “Quando eu morrer, enterrem-me no túmulo onde está sepultado o homem de Deus; ponham os meus ossos ao lado dos ossos dele. 32 Pois a mensagem que declarou por ordem do Senhor contra o altar de Betel e contra todos os altares idólatras das cidades de Samaria certamente se cumprirá”.
33 Mesmo depois disso Jeroboão não mudou o seu mau procedimento, mas continuou a nomear dentre o povo sacerdotes para os altares idólatras. Ele consagrava para esses altares todo aquele que quisesse tornar-se sacerdote. 34 Esse foi o pecado da família de Jeroboão, que levou à sua queda e à sua eliminação da face da terra.

13 And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of the Lord unto Bethel: and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense.
2 And he cried against the altar in the word of the Lord, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith the Lord; Behold, a child shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he offer the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men's bones shall be burnt upon thee.
3 And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is the sign which the Lord hath spoken; Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out.
4 And it came to pass, when king Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had cried against the altar in Bethel, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him.
5 The altar also was rent, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of the Lord.
6 And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Intreat now the face of the Lord thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God besought the Lord, and the king's hand was restored him again, and became as it was before.
7 And the king said unto the man of God, Come home with me, and refresh thyself, and I will give thee a reward.
8 And the man of God said unto the king, If thou wilt give me half thine house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place:
9 For so was it charged me by the word of the Lord, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest.
10 So he went another way, and returned not by the way that he came to Bethel.
11 Now there dwelt an old prophet in Bethel; and his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Bethel: the words which he had spoken unto the king, them they told also to their father.
12 And their father said unto them, What way went he? For his sons had seen what way the man of God went, which came from Judah.
13 And he said unto his sons, Saddle me the ass. So they saddled him the ass: and he rode thereon,
14 And went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak: and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am.
15 Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread.
16 And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee: neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place:
17 For it was said to me by the word of the Lord, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest.
18 He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the Lord, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him.
19 So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his house, and drank water.
20 And it came to pass, as they sat at the table, that the word of the Lord came unto the prophet that brought him back:

23 And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the ass, to wit, for the prophet whom he had brought back.
24 And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and slew him: and his carcase was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it, the lion also stood by the carcase.
25 And, behold, men passed by, and saw the carcase cast in the way, and the lion standing by the carcase: and they came and told it in the city where the old prophet dwelt.
26 And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient unto the word of the Lord: therefore the Lord hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake unto him.

28 And he went and found his carcase cast in the way, and the ass and the lion standing by the carcase: the lion had not eaten the carcase, nor torn the ass.
29 And the prophet took up the carcase of the man of God, and laid it upon the ass, and brought it back: and the old prophet came to the city, to mourn and to bury him.
30 And he laid his carcase in his own grave; and they mourned over him, saying, Alas, my brother!
31 And it came to pass, after he had buried him, that he spake to his sons, saying, When I am dead, then bury me in the sepulchre wherein the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones:
32 For the saying which he cried by the word of the Lord against the altar in Bethel, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely come to pass.
33 After this thing Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again of the lowest of the people priests of the high places: whosoever would, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places.
34 And this thing became sin unto the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face of the earth.

The Message of the Man of God
13 And behold, (A)a man of God went from Judah to Bethel [a]by the word of the Lord, (B)and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense. 2 Then he cried out against the altar [b]by the word of the Lord, and said, “O altar, altar! Thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, a child, (C)Josiah by name, shall be born to the house of David; and on you he shall sacrifice the priests of the high places who burn incense on you, and men’s bones shall be (D)burned on you.’ ” 3 And he gave (E)a sign the same day, saying, “This is the sign which the Lord has spoken: Surely the altar shall split apart, and the ashes on it shall be poured out.”
4 So it came to pass when King Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, who cried out against the altar in Bethel, that he stretched out his hand from the altar, saying, “Arrest him!” Then his hand, which he stretched out toward him, withered, so that he could not pull it back to himself. 5 The altar also was split apart, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of the Lord. 6 Then the king answered and said to the man of God, “Please (F)entreat the favor of the Lord your God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored to me.”
So the man of God entreated the Lord, and the king’s hand was restored to him, and became as before. 7 Then the king said to the man of God, “Come home with me and refresh yourself, and (G)I will give you a reward.”
8 But the man of God said to the king, (H)“If you were to give me half your house, I would not go in with you; nor would I eat bread nor drink water in this place. 9 For so it was commanded me by the word of the Lord, saying, (I)‘You shall not eat bread, nor drink water, nor return by the same way you came.’ ” 10 So he went another way and did not return by the way he came to Bethel.
Death of the Man of God
11 Now an (J)old prophet dwelt in Bethel, and his [c]sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Bethel; they also told their father the words which he had spoken to the king. 12 And their father said to them, “Which way did he go?” For his sons [d]had seen which way the man of God went who came from Judah. 13 Then he said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” So they saddled the donkey for him; and he rode on it, 14 and went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak. Then he said to him, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?”
And he said, “I am.”
15 Then he said to him, “Come home with me and eat bread.”
16 And he said, (K)“I cannot return with you nor go in with you; neither can I eat bread nor drink water with you in this place. 17 For [e]I have been told (L)by the word of the Lord, ‘You shall not eat bread nor drink water there, nor return by going the way you came.’ ”
18 He said to him, “I too am a prophet as you are, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the Lord, saying, ‘Bring him back with you to your house, that he may eat bread and drink water.’ ” (He was lying to him.)
19 So he went back with him, and ate bread in his house, and drank water.
20 Now it happened, as they sat at the table, that the word of the Lord came to the prophet who had brought him back; 21 and he cried out to the man of God who came from Judah, saying, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Because you have disobeyed the word of the Lord, and have not kept the commandment which the Lord your God commanded you, 22 but you came back, ate bread, and drank water in the (M)place of which the Lord said to you, “Eat no bread and drink no water,” your corpse shall not come to the tomb of your fathers.’ ”
23 So it was, after he had eaten bread and after he had drunk, that he saddled the donkey for him, the prophet whom he had brought back. 24 When he was gone, (N)a lion met him on the road and killed him. And his corpse was thrown on the road, and the donkey stood by it. The lion also stood by the corpse. 25 And there, men passed by and saw the corpse thrown on the road, and the lion standing by the corpse. Then they went and told it in the city where the old prophet dwelt.
26 Now when the prophet who had brought him back from the way heard it, he said, “It is the man of God who was disobedient to the word of the Lord. Therefore the Lord has delivered him to the lion, which has torn him and killed him, according to the word of the Lord which He spoke to him.” 27 And he spoke to his sons, saying, “Saddle the donkey for me.” So they saddled it. 28 Then he went and found his corpse thrown on the road, and the donkey and the lion standing by the corpse. The lion had not eaten the corpse nor torn the donkey. 29 And the prophet took up the corpse of the man of God, laid it on the donkey, and brought it back. So the old prophet came to the city to mourn, and to bury him. 30 Then he laid the corpse in his own tomb; and they mourned over him, saying, (O)“Alas, my brother!” 31 So it was, after he had buried him, that he spoke to his sons, saying, “When I am dead, then bury me in the tomb where the man of God is buried; (P)lay my bones beside his bones. 32 (Q)For the [f]saying which he cried out by the word of the Lord against the altar in Bethel, and against all the [g]shrines on the high places which are in the cities of (R)Samaria, will surely come to pass.”
33 (S)After this event Jeroboam did not turn from his evil way, but again he made priests from every class of people for the high places; whoever wished, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places. 34 (T)And this thing was the sin of the house of Jeroboam, so as (U)to exterminate and destroy it from the face of the earth.

The Man of God From Judah
13 By the word of the Lord a man of God(A) came from Judah to Bethel,(B) as Jeroboam was standing by the altar to make an offering. 2 By the word of the Lord he cried out against the altar: “Altar, altar! This is what the Lord says: ‘A son named Josiah(C) will be born to the house of David. On you he will sacrifice the priests of the high places(D) who make offerings here, and human bones will be burned on you.’” 3 That same day the man of God gave a sign:(E) “This is the sign the Lord has declared: The altar will be split apart and the ashes on it will be poured out.”
4 When King Jeroboam heard what the man of God cried out against the altar at Bethel, he stretched out his hand from the altar and said, “Seize him!” But the hand he stretched out toward the man shriveled up, so that he could not pull it back. 5 Also, the altar was split apart and its ashes poured out according to the sign given by the man of God by the word of the Lord.
6 Then the king said to the man of God, “Intercede(F) with the Lord your God and pray for me that my hand may be restored.” So the man of God interceded with the Lord, and the king’s hand was restored and became as it was before.
7 The king said to the man of God, “Come home with me for a meal, and I will give you a gift.”(G)
8 But the man of God answered the king, “Even if you were to give me half your possessions,(H) I would not go with you, nor would I eat bread(I) or drink water here. 9 For I was commanded by the word of the Lord: ‘You must not eat bread or drink water or return by the way you came.’” 10 So he took another road and did not return by the way he had come to Bethel.
11 Now there was a certain old prophet living in Bethel, whose sons came and told him all that the man of God had done there that day. They also told their father what he had said to the king. 12 Their father asked them, “Which way did he go?” And his sons showed him which road the man of God from Judah had taken. 13 So he said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” And when they had saddled the donkey for him, he mounted it 14 and rode after the man of God. He found him sitting under an oak tree and asked, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?”
“I am,” he replied.
15 So the prophet said to him, “Come home with me and eat.”
16 The man of God said, “I cannot turn back and go with you, nor can I eat bread(J) or drink water with you in this place. 17 I have been told by the word of the Lord: ‘You must not eat bread or drink water there or return by the way you came.’”
18 The old prophet answered, “I too am a prophet, as you are. And an angel said to me by the word of the Lord:(K) ‘Bring him back with you to your house so that he may eat bread and drink water.’” (But he was lying(L) to him.) 19 So the man of God returned with him and ate and drank in his house.
20 While they were sitting at the table, the word of the Lord came to the old prophet who had brought him back. 21 He cried out to the man of God who had come from Judah, “This is what the Lord says: ‘You have defied(M) the word of the Lord and have not kept the command the Lord your God gave you. 22 You came back and ate bread and drank water in the place where he told you not to eat or drink. Therefore your body will not be buried in the tomb of your ancestors.’”
23 When the man of God had finished eating and drinking, the prophet who had brought him back saddled his donkey for him. 24 As he went on his way, a lion(N) met him on the road and killed him, and his body was left lying on the road, with both the donkey and the lion standing beside it. 25 Some people who passed by saw the body lying there, with the lion standing beside the body, and they went and reported it in the city where the old prophet lived.
26 When the prophet who had brought him back from his journey heard of it, he said, “It is the man of God who defied(O) the word of the Lord. The Lord has given him over to the lion, which has mauled him and killed him, as the word of the Lord had warned him.”
27 The prophet said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me,” and they did so. 28 Then he went out and found the body lying on the road, with the donkey and the lion standing beside it. The lion had neither eaten the body nor mauled the donkey. 29 So the prophet picked up the body of the man of God, laid it on the donkey, and brought it back to his own city to mourn for him and bury him. 30 Then he laid the body in his own tomb,(P) and they mourned over him and said, “Alas, my brother!”(Q)
31 After burying him, he said to his sons, “When I die, bury me in the grave where the man of God is buried; lay my bones(R) beside his bones. 32 For the message he declared by the word of the Lord against the altar in Bethel and against all the shrines on the high places(S) in the towns of Samaria(T) will certainly come true.”(U)
33 Even after this, Jeroboam did not change his evil ways,(V) but once more appointed priests for the high places from all sorts(W) of people. Anyone who wanted to become a priest he consecrated for the high places. 34 This was the sin(X) of the house of Jeroboam that led to its downfall and to its destruction(Y) from the face of the earth.
