4 Poiché dunque Cristo ha sofferto per noi nella carne, armatevi anche voi del medesimo pensiero, perché chi ha sofferto nella carne ha smesso di peccare,
2 per vivere il tempo che resta nella carne non piú nelle passioni degli uomini, ma secondo la volontà di Dio.
3 Basta a noi infatti il tempo della vita che abbiamo trascorso a soddisfare le cose desiderate dai gentili, quando camminavamo nelle dissolutezze, nelle passioni, nelle ubriachezze, nelle gozzoviglie, nelle baldorie e nelle abominevoli idolatrie.
4 Per questo trovano strano che voi non corriate con loro agli stessi eccessi di dissolutezza e parlano male di voi.
5 Essi renderanno conto a colui che è pronto a giudicare i vivi e i morti.
6 Per questo infatti è stato predicato l'evangelo anche ai morti, affinché fossero giudicati nella carne secondo gli uomini, ma vivessero nello spirito secondo Dio.
7 Or la fine di tutte le cose è vicina; siate dunque sobri e vigilanti per dedicarvi alle preghiere,
8 avendo prima di tutto un intenso amore gli uni per gli altri, perché «l'amore coprirà una moltitudine di peccati».
9 Siate ospitali gli uni verso gli altri senza mormorare.
10 Ciascuno metta al servizio degli altri il dono che ha ricevuto, come buoni amministratori della multiforme grazia di Dio.
11 Chi parla, lo faccia come se annunciasse gli oracoli di Dio; chi fa un servizio, lo faccia nella forza che gli è fornita da Dio, affinché in ogni cosa sia glorificato Dio per mezzo di Gesú Cristo, a cui appartiene la gloria e il dominio per i secoli dei secoli. Amen.
12 Carissimi, non lasciatevi disorientare per la prova di fuoco che è in atto in mezzo a voi per provarvi, come se vi accadesse qualcosa di strano.
13 Ma, nella misura in cui partecipate alle sofferenze di Cristo, rallegratevi perché anche nella manifestazione della sua gloria possiate rallegrarvi ed esultare.
14 Se siete vituperati per il nome di Cristo, beati voi, poiché lo Spirito di gloria e lo Spirito di Dio riposa su di voi; da parte loro egli è bestemmiato, ma da parte vostra egli è glorificato.
15 Nessuno di voi abbia a soffrire come omicida o ladro o malfattore, o perché si impiccia negli affari degli altri;
16 ma, se uno soffre come cristiano, non si vergogni, anzi glorifichi Dio a questo riguardo.
17 Poiché è giunto il tempo che il giudizio cominci dalla casa di Dio, e se comincia prima da noi, quale sarà la fine di coloro che non ubbidiscono all'evangelo di Dio?
18 E «se il giusto è appena salvato, cosa avverrà dell'empio e del peccatore?».
19 Perciò anche quelli che soffrono secondo la volontà di Dio, raccomandino a lui le proprie anime, come al fedele Creatore, facendo il bene.

4 1 He bringeth in Christ’s example, and applieth it, 6 to the mortifying of the flesh, especially commending Charity: 12 And so entreateth of patience. 19 That it is necessary that correction begin at the Church.
1 Forasmuch [a]then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind, which is, that he which hath suffered in the flesh, hath ceased from sin,
2 That he hence forward should live (as much time as [b]remaineth in the flesh) not after the lusts of men, but after the will of God.
3 (A)[c]For it is sufficient for us that we have spent the time past of the life, after the lust [d]of the Gentiles walking in wantonness, lusts, drunkenness, in gluttony, drinkings, and in abominable idolatries.
4 [e]Wherein it seemeth to them [f]strange, that ye run not with them unto the same excess of riot: therefore speak they evil of you.
5 Which shall give account to him, that is ready to judge quick and dead.
6 [g]For unto this purpose was the Gospel preached also unto the dead, that they might be condemned according to men in the flesh, but might live according to God in the spirit.
7 [h]Now the end of all things is at hand. Be ye therefore sober, and watching in prayer.
8 [i]But above all things have fervent love among you: (B)for love shall cover the multitude of sins.
9 [j]Be ye (C)harberous one to another, without grudging.
10 [k](D)Let every man as he hath received the gift, minister the same one to another, [l]as good disposers of the manifold grace of God.
11 [m]If any man speak, let him speak as the words of God. If any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God ministereth, that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom is praise and dominion forever, and ever, Amen.
12 [n]Dearly beloved, think it not [o]strange [p]concerning the fiery trial, which is among you to prove you as though some strange thing were come unto you.
13 [q]But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings, that when his glory shall appear, ye may be glad and rejoice.
14 (E)[r]If ye be railed upon for the Name of Christ, blessed are ye: for the [s]spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: which on their part is evil spoken of, but on your part is glorified.
15 [t]But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or an evil doer, or as a busybody in other men’s matters.
16 But if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed: but let him glorify God in this behalf.
17 [u]For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God. [v]If it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them which obey not the Gospel of God?
18 (F)And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?
19 [w]Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God, commit their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

- 1 Peter 4:17 Lest the godly should be offended and stumble at that vain shadow of felicity of the wicked, as though God were not the governor of the world, for that the wicked are in good case, and the godly in evil, the Apostle teacheth by an argument of a comparison of them together, that God who spareth not his own, but nurtureth them under the cross, will at length in his time handle the rebellious and wicked far otherwise, whom he hath appointed to utter destruction.
- 1 Peter 4:19 The conclusion: Seeing the godly are not afflicted by chance, but by the will of God, they ought not to despair, but go forward, notwithstanding in the way of holiness and well doing, commending themselves to God their faithful Creator, that is to say, their Father.
