Chapter 5
Advice to Presbyters.[a] 1 So I exhort the presbyters[b] among you, as a fellow presbyter and witness to the sufferings of Christ and one who has a share in the glory to be revealed. 2 Tend the flock of God in your midst, [overseeing] not by constraint but willingly, as God would have it, not for shameful profit but eagerly.(A) 3 Do not lord it over those assigned to you, but be examples to the flock. 4 (B)And when the chief Shepherd is revealed, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.[c]
Advice to the Community.[d] 5 Likewise, you younger members,[e] be subject to the presbyters. And all of you, clothe yourselves with humility in your dealings with one another, for:
“God opposes the proud
but bestows favor on the humble.”(C)
6 So humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time.(D) 7 Cast all your worries upon him because he cares for you.(E)
8 Be sober and vigilant. Your opponent the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion looking for [someone] to devour.(F) 9 Resist him, steadfast in faith, knowing that your fellow believers throughout the world undergo the same sufferings. 10 The God of all grace who called you to his eternal glory through Christ [Jesus] will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you after you have suffered a little.(G) 11 To him be dominion forever. Amen.
V. Conclusion
12 I write you this briefly through Silvanus,[f] whom I consider a faithful brother, exhorting you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Remain firm in it. 13 The chosen one[g] at Babylon sends you greeting, as does Mark, my son. 14 Greet one another with a loving kiss. Peace to all of you who are in Christ.(H)

- 5:1–4 In imitation of Christ, the chief shepherd, those entrusted with a pastoral office are to tend the flock by their care and example.
- 5:1 Presbyters: the officially appointed leaders and teachers of the Christian community (cf. 1 Tm 5:17–18; Ti 1:5–8; Jas 5:14).
- 5:4 See note on 1 Pt 2:25.
- 5:5–11 The community is to be subject to the presbyters and to show humility toward one another and trust in God’s love and care (1 Pt 5:5–7). With sobriety, alertness, and steadfast faith they must resist the evil one; their sufferings are shared with Christians everywhere (1 Pt 5:8–9). They will be strengthened and called to eternal glory (1 Pt 5:10–11).
- 5:5 Younger members: this may be a designation for office-holders of lesser rank.
- 5:12 Silvanus: the companion of Paul (see 2 Cor 1:19; 1 Thes 1:1; 2 Thes 1:1). Jews and Jewish Christians, like Paul, often had a Hebrew name (Saoul, Silas) and a Greek or Latin name (Paul, Silvanus). On Silvanus’s possible role as amanuensis, see Introduction.
- 5:13 The chosen one: feminine, referring to the Christian community (ekklēsia) at Babylon, the code name for Rome in Rev 14:8; 17:5; 18:2. Mark, my son: traditionally a prominent disciple of Peter and co-worker at the church in Rome, perhaps the John Mark referred to in Acts 12:12, 25; 13:5, 13; and in Acts 15:37–39, a companion of Barnabas. Perhaps this is the same Mark mentioned as Barnabas’s cousin in Col 4:10, a co-worker with Paul in Phlm 24 (see also 2 Tm 4:11).

5 Kamong mga tigdumala sa mga tumutuo, may isulti ako kaninyo. Isip usa usab ka tigdumala sa mga tumutuo, nga nakakita gayod sa mga pag-antos ni Cristo ug makaambit usab unya sa iyang gahom ug dungog kon moabot na siya, nagapakilooy ako kaninyo nga 2 atimanon ninyo ug maayo ang mga katawhan sa Dios nga gisalig kaninyo. Sama sila sa mga karnero ug kamo mao ang mga magbalantay. Kinahanglan nga sa kaugalingon ninyong kabubut-on ang pag-atiman kanila kay mao kini ang kabubut-on sa Dios, dili kay napugos lang kamo o may gipaabot kamo nga suhol, kondili gusto gayod ninyo nga makatabang kanila. 3 Dili kamo maghari-hari sa mga tumutuo nga gisalig kaninyo, kondili mahimo hinuon kamong ilang panig-ingnan. 4 Ug sa pag-abot ni Cristo nga mao ang Pangulo nga Magbalantay, madawat ninyo ang ganti nga maanindot gayod ug dili mawala hangtod sa hangtod.
5 Kamo usab nga mga batan-on, pagpasakop kamo sa mga tigulang. Ug kamong tanan nga tumutuo, magpaubos kamo ug mag-alagad sa usag usa, kay nagaingon ang Kasulatan, “Sumpoon sa Dios ang garboso, apan kaloy-an niya ang mapainubsanon.” 6 Busa pagpasakop kamo sa gahom sa Dios, kay moabot ang adlaw nga pasidunggan niya kamo. 7 Itugyan ninyo kaniya ang inyong mga gikabalak-an kay may kabalaka siya kaninyo.
8 Pagbantay ug pagtukaw kamo! Kay ang inyong kaaway nga si Satanas nagalibot-libot sama sa liyon nga nagngulob ug nangitag tukbonon. 9 Lig-ona ninyo ang inyong pagtuo sa Dios ug sukli ninyo si Satanas. Hinumdomi ninyo nga dili lang kamo ang nagaantos kondili hasta usab ang tanang mga igsoon ninyo kang Cristo dinhi sa kalibotan. Kining mga pag-antos nga angay makompleto nasinati usab nila. 10 Hamubo lang ang panahon sa inyong pag-antos. Pagkahuman niana ang Dios motabang kaninyo aron wala nay makulang sa inyong kinabuhi, ug siya ang mopalig-on kaninyo. Kay siya ang tinubdan sa tanang panalangin, ug gipili kamo niya aron makaambit usab kamo sa iyang walay kataposang gahom ug dungog pinaagi sa inyong pagkahiusa kang Cristo. 11 Gamhanan siya hangtod sa kahangtoran. Amen.
Pangumusta
12 Gihimo ko kining hamubo nga sulat alang kaninyo pinaagi sa tabang ni Silvano. Igsoon ta siya kang Cristo ug masaligan gayod. Hinaut unta nga pinaagi niini nadasig ko kamo ug napamatud-an ko ang kaayo sa Dios kanato. Pabilin kamo sa iyang kaayo.
13 Ang mga tumutuo sa Babilonia nangumusta kaninyo. Sila sama usab kaninyo nga pinili sa Dios. Si Marcos nga giisip ko nga akong anak nangumusta usab kaninyo.
14 Pagkumustahay kamo isip managsoon kang Cristo.[a]
Ang kalinaw maanaa kaninyong tanan nga anaa kang Cristo.

5 The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:
2 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;
3 Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being examples to the flock.
4 And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.
5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.
6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:
7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
10 But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.
11 To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
12 By Silvanus, a faithful brother unto you, as I suppose, I have written briefly, exhorting, and testifying that this is the true grace of God wherein ye stand.
13 The church that is at Babylon, elected together with you, saluteth you; and so doth Marcus my son.
